Loved seeing him lose to the Packers, and cheered (silently) every time he got hurt.
My grandson was rooting for him so I bit my tongue, but what a horrible hero!

He may have great talent, but really needs to make amends to the helpless animals he has harmed. As said earlier animals and children can't speak for themselves, we as a society need to defend them.

Did we all enjoy hearing that he lost to the Packers?
Despite being a Bears fan and knowing that the Packers will probably destroy us?

Wonderful athlete or not, I can't forgive him. Animals, like children, can't speak for themselves. If we don't stand up for their rights they have no voice. To me (my personal opinion) a pet is a family member, not a possession. Vick is a fabulous athlete with tremendous skill and perhaps I dare say a MVP but he is not a 'human being' I can support. I will never understand how any human being can get pleasure from torturing a living creature, no matter if that is a human or an animal. Torture, to me, is a sociopath behavior... it isn't something that can be "fixed" or "rehabilitated" in my opinion. Mr Vick should have to go through the humiliating and painful experience of explaining to his children why daddy isn't allowed to own animals anymore.

I can't do much from Australia, but I would have thought an effort from some sports fans wherever he plays with posters etc to bring attention back to him and hopefully to embarrass him (if that's possible)take a leaf out of the old "passive resistance) theory and all stand with signs etc.

Tweetykc- You have a good point, but I would rather fine the everloving goodness out of him and use the money as you suggested. I personally can't stand the fact that he is in a position to continually be idolized by anyone, for any reason. I'm sure he had a pretty stack of money when he went to jail... and if he spent it on cars and bling, auction it!
But I like where your head is at. emoticon

i say that he should keep on playing football. and before you start to lose your minds, hear me out. all of the money he makes should go to taking care of abused animals and setting up shelters and clinics for abandoned and abused animals all over the country. what this man has done is sickening and he should rot in hell for ever last sin he has committed, but that is just my opinion.

I completely and whole heartedly agree that Vick should never be able to own ANY animal ever again. I am also sooo unbelievably upset that he gets to continue to play in the NFL and be famous, idolized, and make tons of money. Personally I think animal abusers such as Vick should never be let out of jail. If he had murdered people the way he murdered those animals, he'd never see the light of day.

We had visitors this weekend, and they brought their pure bred pit bull female pup that's a year old. This pup was so intelligent and obedient, and she's being trained to settle down using standard training techniques. The thought of anyone ever mistreating any dog with this kind of spirit is horrifying. Michael Vick is no dog lover, and should never be allowed to own a dog. He is a brutal man, an opportunist, sadistic, and I am concerned about how he would treat children if he could be so heartless with the dogs.

Ugh. You have no idea how much I cringe everytime Michael Vick is on the news here in Philly. I cannot stand the Eagles at all. As an organization, they are pathetic for allowing this criminal to be a part of a Philadelphia team. If he treats animals that way, can you imagine how he would treat a woman?
I just cannot bring myself to be a fan of his--that would just validate and condone his horrific behavior towards those poor animals.

I'm a football fan (Lions!) but I cannot watch the Eagles play. One look at the inhuman sociopath leading that team and I nearly become physically ill. Had he not been caught he would still be torturing and killing dogs. He is the embodiment of evil, and as someone said, IT IS WHO HE IS. As a Christian I know it's wrong to wish harm on another human being. Michael Vick is a "being" but he is not "human". I trust God to make the judgement and determine the punishments. If any of that occurs during MVs lifetime and he can feel the pain, so much the better. I do believe there is a special place in h*ll for him.

Not bloody likely!!! As they say here in Australia they're about as useful as tits on a chook (chicken)

But there again they beat their chests about how much they want the "ethical treatment of animals" but they cherry pick the causes they trumpet. It's always the easy pick for them

This is very near & dear to my heart, but all I'm going to say is that he may be a great football player, but as a human being...he sucks, big time & I wish he & any other animal abuser, would have to endure 10 minutes of what these poor animals had to go through! After some jail time, where he probably was treated like royalty, he got out & resumed his life like nothing happened...the dogs he & his "friends" killed can't do that, the dogs that by some miracle survived the torture can't do that, their lives will never be the same...& his shouldn't be either!

Contact the PETA? Would that get us anywhere?

I feel animal abusers should be made to suffer the same way they made the innocent animals suffer. They get off way too lightly in my opinion. The animals that survived and weren't killed are living the rest of there lives with there scars, Michael Vick got off easy

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. My dad once told me that's why they make chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream.

That being said I agree with you 100% Hickok.

What really saddens me is that if Michael Vick wasn't who he was this wouldn't get so much attention and most likely someone unknown wouldn't be able to adopt a dog after doing something this criminal.

I feel he's using his popularity to get what he needs. He may be a great football player but I am no longer an Eagles fan. Football or not, when the Eagles signed them on in my eyes they signed everything bad about him on. Because of his being so well known.

Especially also this time of the year just give me five minutes alone with people who don't bring their dogs inside - not even five-give me two. Two minutes.

You have a good heart TubLady, but Michael Vick, and his crew didn't just have a fighting ring. They murdered those poor dogs. They shot them, drowned them, electrocuted them, and starved them. I would cringe if he ever owned a dog again. People that go to that lengths have something wrong with them. They have no heart. I saw his interview. Not once did he say he felt so hurt by what happened to the dogs. All he talked about was the hurt he had for being in prison. Doesn't sound to me like he learned a thing.

I do realize the topic was what Vick did to those poor dogs he had fighting. I do not condone any of his actions., or anyone else who does such heinous crimes against any animals.
I would like the punishment to fit the crime, the same to them who mistreated the dogs.
But I also believe having a family pet, and in no way a fighting dog, is something that could be monitored and possibility for the children to experience the joy that one gets from owning a dog.
With all the attention Vick is getting he would be the last person to repeat his crimes.
There is the possibility of a second chance .
And to answer the question of my involvement in having dogs and rescue, very involved with dog and cat rescue in Miami Beach for over 15 years,
Have had dogs all my life,
Give to all the humane society, served on the board of directors.
I detest dog fighting. But I detest the every day abuse that pets get from people who should never be allowed to have a pet.
So many times they are not found out till it is to late.
So we might disagree on what happens in Vicks life now, but not on the heinous crime of dog fighting.

I can't believe that pig could possibly be allowed to own a dog again.

Where are PETA when you need them. They always seem to beat their drum over piddly things, they never touch the hard things. Maybe a bucket of red paint thrown over him a couple of times may let him know the blood that is on his hands.

Let's check with the Humane Society or other animal rescue places to see if they're doing something.

When someone does something as heinous as Vick and his cronies did, it goes to their core. They are all sociopaths and nothing they do can erase it or make it go away. I do believe that if he wasn't caught, he would still be doing it, he is just sorry that he got caught. Using his upbringing to excuse it is just sick. So many people are brought up under hard conditions, but they don't do unspeakable things to the innocent beings that can't protect themselves. The article about Mel just brought me to tears, I can't bear the horror they went through.

You're right, I never even thought of that. That he was treated differently in jail because of who he is.

I re-read your post again Debbie and I can't find anything that would make me feel like he deserves an inch of sympathy.

Those poor dogs, the whole idea of fighting is repugnant to the extreme. People who breed them and fight them should be strung up and the losers that watch this probably deserve the same.

I'd probably bet that he was treated pretty well in jail because of who he is not what he did. A person who does this is a sociopath plain and simple, no amount of jailing will make a difference as he has no feeling, empathy as well as having no soul.

I get pissed off when I see anybody mistreat any animal, not just dogs. There is just no excuse for it. That applies for people who peg their animals out for days, to those who starve or beat them, to the ignorant halfwits that get a pet one minute then discard them the next because it is all too hard.

Our penalties (here in Australia as well) are way too lenient. I mean most serial killers started out abusing animals, geezus why on earth can't we grab the bastards that do this before it escalates?

I sickens me and makes me so very sad that my fellow humans can do such rotten things.

Tublady,

If you read the topic and the article that I posted, the topic is about Michael Vick and the dogs he abused.

By no means does this mean that because he's the subject in this forum we're ignoring all other abused dogs. It's just that this is the subject here.

It sounds as though you're saying this is an either or - it's not. We're not making a choice here.

It would be great if you began a forum about abused dogs and while I'm involved in several rescue dog groups I would welcome more information from you on other ways to help.

I would like to address your comment though that he's trying to do something about his terrible crime. This goes beyond terrible crime, what happened was an abomination. If he hadn't got caught I have no doubt he would still be doing the same thing. Wasn't there a question about him conveniently leaving a party a few seconds before someone was shot? This is the man he is, just because he's suddenly doing so well doesn't excuse ever what he did. He's an evil, cruel person to me. He's not doing anything about his terrible crime. Talking to school children? What about if he gave the millions he's making towards rescuing dogs bred for fighting, maybe start a forever home for them where they can finally know love and run. What about if he stopped thinking about himself and how popular he can be. Because after all if he does well everyone should forget what he did. Right?

I won't forget it. And hand him up? You bet I do.

Not sure how long you have been with our group. We have had stories in here of other people who abuse animals. It makes us just as mad. However, Mr. Veck and his crew, electrocuted, hung, beat, and drowned dogs who didn't live up to "their expectations". So I guess that just makes people a little more angry. Anyone who is caught abusing animals, or children, should be punished. And if it were up to me, I would throw away the key so they would never get out.

OK I get it you all want to hand Micheal Vick up by his @#$%. Maybe so., but at least he was caught and is trying to do something about his terrible crime.
What about all the regular people that chain a dog up in the backyard and just leave it there??
Or the ones that don't provide adequate housing and only the smallest amount of feed. Sometimes just table scraps.?
The attention is usually on the puppy mills, which should be put out of business.
But the everyday person who buy or picks up a dog and mistreats them is just as grievous. They are the ones I would like to see treated the same as they are treating their pet.

Thanks so much for posting this. I saw the show about the rescued pit bulls from Michael Vick's "kennel," which was more like a torture chamber for dogs. The show was on National Geographic channel sometime last year. The rescue group in Utah is wonderful, and they were trying to rehabilitate these dogs with lots of love and dog psychology. I think Michael Vick should be fined for every penny he makes for the rest of his football career, and the money should go to the rescue group that is taking care of the dogs he abused. At least this would be meaningful restitution to the dogs. Anyway, if I was the judge, that's what I'd do!

Whip nothing... for crimes against animals and children they need to bring back the gallows and public hangings. Morbid maybe, but I think I'd actually attend that one!

I'm with all of you, he may have done his time if it was staked out in a pit on his hands and knees for the time he was in jail, but once a scumbag always a scumbag.

Professional sports harbours some of the most low lifes in the world today, if they can make money somebody will always be there to clean up after them. Penalties are at best woeful at worse just as criminal as the crime committed.

Bring back the whip!!!

a person like this deserves about as much dignity and respect as any wife beater or child abuser in my opinion. these things make me ill, and just because he got a slap on the wrist for it is not justice in any way shape or form.

I agree, he probably isn't sorry for what he did to those innocent animals, he's just sorry he got caught. I can't stand the man and I know that in the end he will have to answer for what he did and will pay for it.

I agree 100% he's sorry that he got caught. I heard people in the hall just yesterday saying how great it was the Eagles got Vicks. Guess what, I can't help it but my respect for them has gone away.

I too never watched football, oh maybe a little with someone I was dating but never understood it either.

What really hit a nerve was that the article said this isn't about what Vick did, it's about who he is. And I'm going to use that the next time someone says something about Vick. Okay don't quite have the nerve to tell my boss.

But...I bought a Michael Vick chew toy for my Koda. Koda bit off his legs and arms and had half the head gone. I brought it to the office and said to my boss, look what my dog thought about Michael Vick.

I, too, have benn disgusted and sick to my stomach at the very idea of what Vick did to these dogs. And then he said he didn't know it was wrong because that's how he was brought up. Well, I am from Virginia too, and I KNOW this is wrong. It repulses me and I can't forgive him either. I will never watch him on TV, I will never believe he is sorry for what he did. I believe he is sorry his enterprise got busted. My friend read the book "The Lost Dogs" and told me that I would never make it through it. It was too horrifying. It was a good book, but very sad. I am also disgusted that is he allowed to play football and that they picked him back up. Why DO the professionals get away with these horrific acts and then go on with their lives? It sickens me. I sometimes have felt guilty about not forgiving because that's not how I was brought up...but I think of those defenseless animals and the torture they were put through...and I'm sorry...my heart is with them.

Great post!

I know that he has "done his time"
but yet I know that no time will ever be enough either in the back of my mind.

I suppose he'll get his day when he gets to TRY to enter the "pearly gates".
Until then, I don't have to root for him either. I'll always continue to root for his animals that he violated, rooting that they have the opportunity to have THEIR say about his past poor choices about how he treated them and that they (the animals) get a chance to treat him like he treated them. An eye for an eye philosophy, I suppose.

Thanks again

I agree wholeheartedly.........I got the book "The Lost Dogs" to read about some of the success stories they have had rehabilitating some of those dogs, and I CAN'T READ IT.....it is SO detailed of the horrible things they did to those babies, I simply cannot read it. Shame on you Michael Vick and any supporters he has, shame on them too! emoticon

I can't forgive Vick, I really hate him. I think he should be locked up somewhere with no access to any animals ever.
What is it with football hero worship anyway? Doesn't matter if they kill their wife, or rape someone, drive drunk or take drugs and beat someone up...they are beyond the laws of decency.

Wow that you so much for sharing. I have forwarded this to my rescue group. Since Denver has banned pitbulls, we have an over abundance of them here in the Colorado Springs. When you go to the Humane Society's web page they are the dominant breed there. We are only allowed to have 2 in our rescues system at any given time because we do a background check before they are adopted and it can be quiet costly. It is such a shame what a bad name bad people have given a good breed.

This makes me sick. What it shows is how little regard the football industry has for the rest of the world. All they care about is guts and glory and the almighty buck. I never liked football much, never got the point. Now... a football game, no matter what team, will never cross my TV screen, and I will never set foot inside a live game. You can show me 100, 1000 players who do good for children, the homeless, the downtrodden. You can show me their charitable contributions till the cows come home. I don't care. I want to know what the football industry and its players are doing to make the Michael Vicks in their ranks pay for these crimes. They certainly aren't punishing him fame or fortune-wise. He was punished for the criminal act of racketeering. He was never punished for the mental or physical anguish he caused those dogs. As far as I'm concerned, the only way to punish him for that is to give him a good long taste of his own medicine. But, see, we can't do that, because we are "civilized." What I want to know is, why do we allow an uncivilized man like Michael Vick to treat animals that way and them let him go back to his former glory like nothing happened?

Paid his price? I'm with Mel. I don't think so.

Good article. Thanks for sharing.

I live in south Jersey/Philadelphia. Am I an Eagles Fan. Never. I can't sort my feelings between a football player and an animal abuser. And I work with 98% of Eagle fans here who I have made aware of my feelings.
What scares me is the depth of my anger at times. Dog owner can't forgive Michael Vick.

Please read this with tissues.

Quarterback shows greatness on the field, but evidence of
former cruelty remains.

By Bill Plaschke
November 16, 2010|8:27 p.m.

While Michael Vick was screaming toward the sky, a black
pit bull named Mel was standing quietly by a door.

On this night, like many other nights, Mel was waiting for his
owners to take him outside, but he couldn't alert them with
a bark. He doesn't bark. He won't bark. The bark has been
beaten out of him.

While Michael Vick was running for glory, Mel was cowering
toward a wall.

Every time the 4-year-old dog meets a stranger, he goes into
convulsions. He staggers back into a wall for protection. He
lowers his face and tries to hide. New faces are not new friends,
but old terrors.

While Michael Vick was officially outracing his past Monday night,
one of the dogs he abused cannot.

"Some people wonder, are we ever going to let Michael Vick get
beyond all this?" said Richard Hunter, who owns Mel. "I tell them,
let's let Mel decide that. When he stops shaking, maybe then we
can talk."

I know, I know, this is a cheap and easy column, right? One day
after the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback officially becomes an
American hero again, just call the owner of one of the dogs who
endured Vick's unspeakable abuse and let the shaming begin.

Compare Vick's 413 total yards, four touchdown passes and two
rushing touchdowns against the Washington Redskins to the 47
pit bulls who were seized from Bad Newz Kennels, his interstate
dogfighting ring. Contrast one of the best three hours by a
quarterback ever to the 21 months he spent in prison.

Cheap and easy, right? Not so fast. Vick's success is raising one of
the most potentially costly and difficult perceptual questions in
the history of American sports.

If he continues playing this well, he could end up as the league's
most valuable player. In six games, he has thrown for 11
touchdowns, run for four more touchdowns, committed zero
turnovers and produced nearly 300 total yards per game. Heck,
at this rate, with his Eagles inspired by his touch, he could even
win a Super Bowl, one of the greatest achievements by an
American sportsman.

And yet a large percentage of the population will still think
Michael Vick is a sociopath. Many people will never get over
Vick's own admissions of unthinkable cruelty to his pit bulls
the strangling, the drowning, the electrocutions, the removal
of all the teeth of female dogs who would fight back during
mating.

Some believe that because Vick served his time in prison, he
should be beyond reproach for his former actions. Many others
believe that cruelty to animals isn't something somebody does,
it's something somebody is.

Essentially, an ex-convict is dominating America's most popular
sport while victims of his previous crime continue to live with the
brutality of that crime, and has that ever happened before?

Do you cheer the player and boo the man? Can you cheer the
comeback while loathing the actions that necessitated the
comeback? And how can you do any of this while not knowing
if Vick has truly discovered morality or simply rediscovered the
pocket?

If you are Richard Hunter, you just don't watch football.

"When you look at Mel," said Hunter, a radio personality from
Dallas, "you just don't think about how Michael Vick is a great
football player."

A couple of years ago, Hunter and his wife Sunny were watching
a documentary on Best Friends Animal Society, the Utah sanctuary
where the court sent 22 of Vick's 44 seized dogs. It was after
1 a.m. when the show featured a Vick victim that had been so
badly abused, it refused to move, behaving as if paralyzed.

"My wife said, 'Get out of bed, get on the computer and e-mail
those people, I want one of those dogs,' " Hunter recalled.

Nearly 18 months later, they became one of six people to
adopt one of the dogs. The process included a home visit by
caseworkers, an extended visit to the southwest Utah sanctuary,
home monitoring by a dog trainer and a six-month probation
period.

"These dogs were scarred in many ways both emotional and
physical," said John Polis, Best Friends spokesman. "It was
something we had never really seen before."

Hunter and his wife quickly saw Mel's scars. The dog wouldn't
bark, wouldn't show affection, and would spend nearly an hour
shaking with each new person who tried to touch him.

It turns out that Mel had been a bait dog, thrown into the ring
as a sort of sparring partner for the tougher dogs, sometimes
even muzzled so he wouldn't fight back, beaten daily to sap his
will. Mel was under constant attack, and couldn't fight back,
and the deep cuts were visible on more than just his fur.

"You could see that Michael Vick went to a lot of trouble to
make Mel this way," Hunter said. "When people pet him, I tell
them, pet him from under his chin, not over his head. He lives
in fear of someone putting their hand over his head."

On Monday night, no, Mel was not hanging out by the televised
football game. He was hanging on his owner's bed as they watched
something on HBO.

"How can you support football when you know one of their stars
did this to a dog?" Hunter said. "If more people saw Mel at the
same time as they saw Michael Vick, he wouldn't be so lauded."

Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, the lessons learned from Vick's
crimes were on display in a postgame quote from Eagles star
receiver DeSean Jackson.

"We were like pit bulls ready to get out of the cage," he told
reporters.

Cheap and easy, huh?
