I am so very sorry that you lost Sadie. Some years ago I lost the first dog that I had purchased "as an adult", that wasn't my family's dog...it was devastating. My heart aches with you - such an empty place, I know. Nothing will ever replace her, but I hope that as the days pass, the pain will grow smaller.
Praying for you today -
Susie

Pattie –

I am so sorry for your loss of Sadie. You should not beat yourself up over the things you did and did not do. Sadie knows that you loved her and her love for you is unconditional. She would not want you blaming yourself.

I'm so sorry for your lost. You have to forgive yourself. You didn't intentionally hurt Sadie. You did everything you could for her. I'm sure she was happy because she felt loved and well taken care off. She couldn't ask for more than that and you couldn't give more than that. If you had known you never would have left her BUT you didn't know. You can't beat yourself up for what you didn't know. Take time and grieve and cherish the wonderful times and moments you had. Remember Sadie and find comfort in the bridge. You know how much she loved you and your husband too. She wouldn't want you sad. emoticon

Our life is a a sum total of the choices we have made. I choose to make changes in my life and allow God to be in control to keep me from being out of control.

Pattie, Once again, I am so sorry about Sadie's passing but by playing the tape over in your head you are punishing yourself for something you had no control over. Let go of the misplaced guilt, start the grieving process and know that your pup had the best family and most love anyone could have given her. I very much believe in The Rainbow Bridge and hope you do too! We are here for you.

my prayers are with you, I lost my lady friend last month, we went on vacation and she passed while I was away, a beautiful st. bernard. I know how much you miss your dog, they are family memebers and it takes time to find a place to deal with your emotions. But we dog lovers are so lucky for the unconditional love we get.

Unfortunately, I don't think I can ever forgive myself for doing so many things wrong. The fact that my baby died without me there with her will haunt me for the rest of my life.

I want to add my prayers to you for finding your way through the pain of losing your beloved Sadie. We have lost some wonderful dogs over the years, mostly to old age. But there were a few who died before their time due to undiagnosed illnesses, so don't beat yourself up about this. Dogs and cats can be really sick, but don't show it as much because of some primitive protective thing. They can't show they are weak or the predators will get them. I've had pets that were seriously ill, but didn't show symptoms until it was too late to save them.

Part of having pets ends up being a tutorial about how to grieve and deal with loss. They just don't live as long as people, so it's inevitable we will have to say good by to them. It's hard, and painful, and still, I will always have a dog in my life no matter what. I love them, their goofy ways, their unconditional love, and that special bond you get with them.

I've been there many times. My family raises Yellow Labs and have done so since 1975. While that has given us a constant stream of awesome dogs, it has also given us an equal number of very sad times when our babies pass from this life.

Just know that you are not alone and while the pain will subside in time, it never goes away. I find myself still, to this day, remembering our first Yellow Lab, Scout, and he passed away back in 1987 (those memories still bring tears to my eyes - I miss them all, but he was the first).

In fact, we just lost our last lab, Bear, a few months ago. He was 13+, which is a good run for a Lab. The best breed ever (yes I know I am biased).

All the best in this time of grief.

My heart goes out to you. I lost my 'first born' as I always called her three years ago to a long cancer battle. I will always miss her. She was like my child. Now she lives every day in my memories and my heart. It sounds as if you had the same type of bond with Sadie. It is a bond many people don't understand as you said but I know how deep those bonds go and I empathize. Thank you for sharing the information with all of us about Addison's. I never heard of it before your post. You will be in my thoughts.

Thank you so much for your kind comments and condolences. It helps me to know that so many of you understand the terrible pain and grief my husband and I are feeling. We are truly heartbroken to have lost our angel.

I'm having a difficult day today reliving the surgery she has last week, and I know the weekend and Monday will be very difficult reliving the drive to Cornell and her passing. I hate that this happened to my beautiful, happy dog. I know I was touched by an angel, and I hope to find my happiness again by sharing the joy she always spread.

Thank you all again.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know this is so hard as in the past few years I lost 5 animals that I was very close to. One of them was like my shadow and I miss him so dearly. He was my best friend too. I know this is so hard on you and just remember, she is always with you and so are her memories.

I am so sorry for your loss. Having lost a dog suddenly a couple of years ago (never did find out why) and another one to cancer a month ago, I feel your pain. You're right, non-dog people have no idea how this feels.

This is the time for you to do whatever you must to take care of yourself. Know that you're thought of and supported here. I'm glad you reached out, even if you didn't know what you were looking for. I hope the fibro flare settles down and you feel better soon.

I am so sorry about Sadie--I cried reading your post because it brought back memories of when I lost my beloved Tori. I couldn't function for over a week and I was unconsolable for months. I thought something was wrong with me (wish I had been a sparks member back then, and on the dog lovers team--I think the understanding from co-members would have helped). I also went through the "if onlys" and "what ifs"....but it didn't change the fact that my girl was gone. Things will improve--it might take weeks, months, maybe a few years..we all grieve in our own special way. Remember that if you need to talk it out, your fellow dog lovers are here for you.

I am so very sorry for your loss! It is so heart-wrenching, as we all know well. And I understand the "what if I had done something different...". You can't dwell on that or feel badly or you will second guess yourself sick. I have done that many times. You loved your "child" deeply and with pure devotion. That is what is important. And I do agree and pray it is so, we will see them again on Rainbow Bridge.

I am only one person, but I am still one. I cannot do everything, but I can still do something. And just because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something I can do.

Patti, I'm so sorry to hear about Sadie's passing but you certainly can not blame yourself. Replaying the "what if" over and over in your head may make it hard for you to start the grieving process. The wonderful pictures of you and Sadie show the many great memories of the love you showered her with. She couldn't have asked for a better family! Most of the people on the team know exactly what your going through...it's heart wrenching and we're there for you.

My heart is aching for you. We've sent two of our beloved greyhounds to the bridge, one suddenly and one from osteosarcoma, so I know the pain you are feeling. Only time can make it better. Our thoughts and prayers are with you today.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. here are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together... .-Author Unknown

Thank you all so much for your thoughs and kind comments.

The most difficult part is that things may have turned out differently if her vet had diagnosed the Addison's Disease that we found out she was positive for, after her passing. We had taken her to our family vet four times in the past year for symptoms they couldn't explain, and didn't do the test for Addison's. Last Thursday, they sent us to a veterinary surgeon who did exploratory surgery. After the surgery, the surgeon did a test for Addison's and began treatment on Friday. Unfortunately, she developed pneumonia following the surgery, and that is what caused her death.

I need all dog owners to recognize the symptoms of Addison's Disease, and other hormonal conditions, and insist that your vet do a test!

I am heartbroken, and I just keep wondering if I had done something differently would things have been different. She was only 9 years old, and such a sweet, vibrant girl.

My beautiful dog Sadie died on Monday. Most don't understand the incredible bond we had; she was my baby and she did everything with us. I feel like my heart has been torn from my body.

I haven't been able to eat since Saturday. We took her to Cornell Veterinary Hospital, but we had to leave on Sunday night to return home for work on Monday. On Monday morning, we received a call that her breathing was difficult, and we should come see her right away. It's a 3 hour drive to get there, and she died before we made it.

I have so many questions, and I feel so alone. I want her back.

I have been in a major fibro flare since the events of Monday, and it just hasn't let up.

I don't know what I'm reaching out for here; maybe I just needed to write about it.

I am so heartbroken.
