I am so happy we are going to start to wein Hailey off the Prozac, starting Sunday. She was on 40 mg and now going to 20 mg and in a month will be off them. I told the doc she is still aggitated when going to visit the vet, but when dh holds her they seem to get the blood test done. She is going for her yearly physical, end of March, and with all that has to be done, worries me how long dh can hold her.
She stil has 6 month checks up for her kidney which has not come back full force after that disease she caught from smelling a wild animal's urine. We have them here and even though you try to stop them from smelling they manage to do so. We have coyote, fox, racoon, etc.

Good Morning All,

The weather here in Maine today is still nice. The temperature is 45 all ready today. It might even hit 50. That would be awesome. I really hope and think that the snow days are over. I will continue to pray that they are gone.

I hope that everyone is having a good morning and will have a great afternoon.

I only have the one Siberian Husky, but he is a great animal and he will give me kisses all the time. I love him so very much. We wanted to mate him and get one of the puppies, but we haven't had any success with it. He is starting to get old so if we want to still do it we need to do it soon.

I wish you all the BEST!

Hey there! I was just looking through these posts and saw your pic of your beautiful husky. I have 2 myself. An all white male, Talyn and a red and white female, Tayla. I love those dogs sooo much. They are great and a huge part of my life. I don't know what I would do without them. I just enjoyed your pic and thought I would share! Have a great night.

Hi, I'm new, and am hoping that this may help me 'stay the course'. I also get discouraged at my difficulty sticking to my eating plan. I find it helps me to keep from dwelling on what went wrong and focussing on what I did right, yesterday, today, last week - whenever. The 'you're kidding yourself if you think you can do this' voice feeds on obsessing about mistakes. Your dog doesn't dwell on her mistakes, she just enjoys the life she has.

Hailey is not starting to like being rubbed. I think she is starting to get out of her puppy ways as she doesn't try to bite playing anymore, with me. She loves her walks and playing ball outside. She takes one in her mouth and rolls the other. She will run after the ball if you throw it and then roll it back.
Then she will come in and usually take a nap. LOL

Hello All,

I hope everyone is having a good day. So far the weather has remained nice and sunny.

Mushka likes to be inside spending the day with us. He will let us know when he wants to go out. We will tie him out on his runner and he will do his business and then bark, just once, to come in. I love kissing and hugging him all the time. When I sit on the couch he will sit right in the middle of my legs where I will hug him and rub him all over. He likes to get his back rubbed. After that he will then lay down and roll on his back some so he can get his belly rubbed too. He makes me feel so good and happy when I am done doing that.

I wish you all the BEST!

Hello All,

Mushka, was trained as a puppy not to mess in the house. We did the crate thing and it worked great. To this day he has not wet or mess in the house. If we are home he will ask to go out by standing by the door. If we have to go out he will hold himself for the entire time. We try not to be gone so long but sometimes we have to, and he still won't do anything. He is a great dog.

I hope all is well with everyone.

At night you can put ice cubes in dish instead of water when you go to bed. My son's dog, a lab, is l6 and even she goes out quite a bit, she will wet in the house if you are not home, if she has to go. My dog, on the picture, Spike, gone 3 years this August, never did, only the last day before we had to put him down. The reason he could not get up on his legs to go out, all 4 went.

The dog we have now, Hailey, on Jan531 page and could even be on Camey 13 page with pictures, is a female and a mind of her own. We have been taking her in the car to get her accustom to rides and somedays she is fine, others she is all over the place and I have to keep telling her to sit. Sometimes, she will bark at people in other cars, or someone at a gas station or waiting for a bus, other days she is an angel.

Hello All,

I hope everyone is having a good day. The temperature here in Maine is 52 degrees outside. Spring will be here before you know it. I can hardly wait.

Mushka can do some tricks. He will keep food on his nose for a short time, he will jump up and turn around in a circle and then get his treat, he can lay on command, sit, roll on his back to get his belly rubbed. We have been training him some, but not on a continuing basis. He seems to remember them though. He is going on 8 years old, but acts like a puppy still. He is a great dog.

I wish everyone the BEST!

Very good ideas. My dog will sit, beg, dance, speak, roll over and allow food on nose until told okay. Love the pray command. May try that one.
In past, trained to go outside but since surgery has accidents all the time even when let out appox ever 1-2 hrs. Should I remove the water dish"? Had to confine to kitchen. Vet really has no solution. Getting older, may be age issue or due to surgery. Prob have to have surgery again due to growth around mamory glands.

Some great training tips! Once a command is estabished, it is important to reinforce it every so often...I am still training my rottie-shepard after 7 years!

How To Establish Eye Contact With Your Dog On Command

Before you attempt to teach your dog that "to look at you" is actually a command that must be followed at all times -- when indoors... when outdoors... when playing... when eating... and even when walking -- you'll want to first teach your dog to give you his full undivided attention when you're in the house and stationary. That is, without any distractions or movement involved.

First, Try It Indoors

1. With your dog in front of you, have treats in your left hand. Wait patiently. Then, the instant your dog looks up at your face, TREAT.

2. Then, let a few seconds elapse and wait for him to look at something else...

3. Say your dog's name again, and the second he looks up at your face, TREAT.

4. Repeat this until your dog is instantly looking up at you every single time you say his name.

At first, it may help to hold up the treat between your eyes to get him to focus on your face. However, you don't want to be rewarding him for following your hand from the treat container up to your eyes each time, so only reward for those times that he has looked away (at something other than you or the treats) and then back at you.

Then, Try It Outdoors

Finally, take it outside -- where there will besome minor distractions -- and go through steps 1 through 4 again.

Be consistent... each and every time he makes eye contact with you, he must receive a TREAT. Don't expect much in these first few days of training. And don't move around the yard a lot. It's the simply the task of getting your dog to recognize his name and to stare at you adoringly that we're after here. (Training in situations with movement and many distractions comes later.)

Of course, due to the minor distractions that you are likely to encounter outdoors, you will probably have to reward your dog for just milliseconds of eye contact at first when you are outside. Then, gradually to test how much your dog "gets it", you will want to start delaying the point at which you deliver the TREAT. This means, you will call his name, then when he stares at you, simply stare back a few seconds longer before you actually deliver the TREAT.

How To Do The 'Balance On The Nose' Trick:
#1 Have your dog in the "sit" or "lie down" position, and make sure that his attention is fully on you.

#2 Place a very small piece of your dog's favorite dog treat on the middle (flat part) of his nose.

#3 IMMEDIATELY say, "OK!" and let him get the treat. Then, IMMEDIATELY give lots of praise... a crazy amount of praise is required here!

Why? Because to your dog, it will feel weird to have something sitting on top of his nose, so he'll ignore whatever you say and get the treat anyway. Saying "OK!" shows that's exactly what you wanted to happen, and he was following your orders! And the overly enthusiastic praise shows your dog he did the right thing.

#4 Afterwards, give your dog a separate treat -- as a reward for getting the treat from his nose, on command.

#5 Do steps 1 thru 4 over and over again, several times in a row. The most important thing: Each time you do it, increase the amount of time between when you put the treat on your dog's nose and when you say "OK!".

The tricky part is being able to tell the millisecond before your dog will just get it on his own -- out of irritation if nothing else. The longer you can increase the time before saying "OK!", the more your dog is "getting it".

Your dog's own attention span will determine how many times in a row you try this in one sitting.

For some dogs, it will only take a couple of times before they realize what you're asking and what they're doing. Other dogs may tire of this "game" -- in which case, you should stop the training and come back to it several hours later.

The most important thing is to keep practicing steps 1 thru 4 two or three times a day, and for several days in a row.

Never reprimand, or act discouraged when/if your dog does it "wrong". Every little itty bitty ounce of improvement is worth a billion times more praise and enthusiasm each time.

...it worked for us.

Training your dog to bark on command has another hidden feature - you can also train her to stop barking on command.

Step 1Hold a particular toy, such as a ball or squeak toy that causes your dog to bark. Give the command BARK or SPEAK.

Step 2When your dog barks say, GOOD.

Step 3Give him the toy or food as a reward and praise him.

Step 4Repeat steps 1 through 3 until your dog understands the command to bark.

Step 5When your dog understands the command, command him to bark.

Step 6After three barks say, QUIET or SILENCE or any other word(s) to command him not to bark. Praise and reward him with the toy.

Step 7Repeat steps 5 and 6 until he understands the command.

Step 8Instead of using a toy, have someone knock on the door and repeat steps 2 through 7, rewarding him with praise and affection when he succeeds.

How To Teach Your Dog To Pray
Basically, it's a 4-step process in teaching a dog to pray:
1. Dog must sit.

2. Dog must lie down.

3. Dog must place chin on ground.

4. Dog must remain in that position until you say "Amen."

When I had the dog I use when I write here, my neighbor used to watch him. I had no problem because we went to the same vet and he had all the information. Now, we go to different ones because Hailey is upset with going and struggles. The vet is 75 and too old to handle her. Dh has to hold her and an assistant holds the back. Then it is over in seconds.

My pet sitter has actually become a good friend but the few times I've gone away I've left pages and pages of information. I feel better to be safe than sorry. Then I leave information for my sister as a backup.

Taken from my daily pet tip

It's logical that you would give a pet sitter a written list with your cell phone number and the vet's number, but you also need to leave your pet's name, age, and breed because in an emergency the pet sitter might panic. A medical history with any notable issues should also be on the emergency sheet.

I take both of my dogs for walks almost every day, but not together as one is 140lbs. and one is 11 lbs. The big guy loves any kind of weather, especially the snow and cold of Wisconsin but the little one has a tough time with the ice...loves to play in the snow, though! They both need the exercise as much as I do!!!

Hi Glitterbug85 - I was really excited to see your post. I thought I was the only person who takes my small dog (Shih-Tzu) jogging. She loves it! Most people with small dogs tell me I'm going to hurt her or tell me that small dogs "can't handle" long walks or even a short jog. Thank you for letting me know I'm not alone.

Hi fellow dog lovers, I was happy to see this page. We just have 2 dogs, but one of them is the equivalent of 3, I think. We have a 6 yo Jack Russell Terrier who is great, and recently rescued a Newfie/St. Bernard mix. She just turned a year old and is very lovable, but also very needy and VERY much still a puppy. It's like raising my kids all over again! It's been too cold (for me, not her!) and snowy here to walk them right now, but we'll get back to it when it melts and warms up a bit. She has to work on her walking manners - a lot!

Hello All,

I have to leave Mushka at home when I go for physical therapy. But in the summer when we take walks he comes with us. He loves to walk. I try to do a lot of walking in the summer, but I don't do as much as I should. My health plays a big role in when and how I exercise.

I know that animals are so loverable that sometimes we have to take them home with us. We cannot resist.

I wish you all the BEST!

Our animal shelter had 4 of their dogs at a local knitting shop for a day to gather some donations and maybe get adoptive families for these dogs. I could have walked home with any one of them. Certainly offered a donation. If we didn't already have an elderly dog at home needing lots of attention and being a bit frail, I would have brought Ralph home in a heartbeat. He looked like a German wirehair with a little Lab mixed in. What a cute dog with lots of energy. Luckily our Lab, Buck, lives up to his name with energy and keeps me walking at least a mile a day.

Hello...I can certainly understand how you could accumulate 8 dogs. I want every dog I see that needs rescuing! They have so much love in them, and they just want to share it with someone. I'm anxious to hear what kinds of dogs you have. I just have one, a westie-schnoo, and I cannot imagine life without her.

Welcome! I am a pretty new member and I don't post a lot, but I am a huge animal lover also. Do you let your dogs workout with you or do you have to leave them at home? My 3 run with me all of the time and they are all small so it can be pretty funny to see us running up and down our dead end street!

Hi All,

8 dogs is a lot, but you must have a great variety. What kinds of dogs do you have? I can see why you would say that they are a lot of work. But you would probably be lost without them. I am sure that you have seen a lot of different attitudes. They are unique from each other.

As far as getting the hang of SparkPeople just let it take it course. You don't need to rush anything. Take your time and just pick out some team topics that you might like to be a member of. You can monitor your food intake and watch your calories at the same time. You can make your own homepage with information you would like to share with other members. There is a place where you can weigh yourself and monitor your progress. Just take your time and look around, there is a lot of stuff that is offered. If you are looking for something pacific just ask for help. We all help each other.

I wish you all the BEST!

Hello Everyone,
I was excited to see a dog lover's group. I have more dogs than I'd like to admit, from pug to great dane. They are wonderful and so much work but they are my constant companions and I seem to take those that others cant keep. Anyway back to weight loss!! I am brand new, afraid to weigh myself and sick of gaining and losing the same 25 pounds. I hope this is different!!! emoticon

Dot, since it is you and me writing back and forth, why not send me your email on the spark mail. Then I can email you and we can talk about it. I don't think anyone wants to hear about our problems on the board as they are not responding to it. I don't usually talk about them on boards, only in my emails, where it is me and someone that has the same problem. I can't get on the floor either, but I do my sit down bike, like you have, and knee and back exercise. I use Ben Gay at times too. When it is cold I feel it more. I get spasms in the inner thigh from the knee, that shot down my leg.

Hello All,

Camey, I am sorry to hear that you have the same problems that I have. I wouldn't wish them on any one. Today is a better day then yesterday. At least I didn't wake up with that pain in my legs. Yesterday I had a ultrasound done of my left knee, so they could give me a cortisone shot. They needed to do that so they could find a spot to inject. That is how bad that knee is. They also said that I have fluid that is building up under the knee cap. They wanted to do surgery on them but my health is not up to doing that right now.

I am glad that you have some exercises that help ease your pain. I cannot get down on the floor to do any exercises. My back is to bad for me to do that. I do use my recumbent bike, and some other exercises that physical therapy has instructed me to do. I go there twice a week in the pool. It helps some but doesn't take it all away. I know there is no exercise that will do that.

Thank you for being so understanding. It is good to have a friend that is willing to help and be so great as you are to me.

I wish you all the BEST!

I have the same problem as you. Both knees have arthritis bad and down the road might need knee replacement. Hips have bad arthritis and down the road hip replacement. I am loaded with arthritis from back to feet. The other night got a spasm in my inner thigh and it went to my whole right leg, over to my back and shoulder before it let up. I think it is caused by the knee. I had x rays and therapy and I was told to use the sit down bike and it does help.
I have to use weights for my back and sit in the chair and do exercises for my knees. I also had to lie on the floor and put my ankle through a loop in a rope and swing back and forth. I do these evryday and it helps the pain.

Hello All,

I hope that everyone is having a good day.

Camey, It is hard to describe it, I have Fibromyalgia, Arthritis in my back and knees. I also have sciatic pain that runs from my back down through my legs all the way to my toes. It is in both. I am really suppose to have surgery on them, but I am not healthy enough to have them done. Today I went to have an ultrasound of my left knee, so they could give me a cortisone injection in it. That was the only way they could do it, because the bones where to close together. The doctor told me that I have some fluid built up in it, also the arthritis has done some damage to it.

Well enough of that. I hope that your pain can get better. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

I wish you all the BEST!

I MADE A BIG BATCH OF DOG FOOD. MY NEW LITTLE CHIHUAHUA IS EATING A LITTLE HOME MADE NOW WITH HIS DRY. WHEN WE WENT OUT THIS MORNING HE WENT THRU THE FENCE (4"X4" WIRE) SO QUICK AND I DIDN'T EVEN SEE HIM. HE'S HAD THE SHIH TZU AND THE ROTTI GOING FOR 2 DAYS BARKING AT HIS REFLECTION IN THE MIRROR! WE ALL LOVE HIM NOW AND EVEN HIS "BIG BROTHER" THE SHIH TZU TRUSTS HIM NOW TO PLAY WITH HIM. THEY ARE SO CUTE ZIPPING AND RUNNING ALL OVER THE PLACE.

Hello All,

Hope everyone had a good Super Bowl day. I don't get involved with sports. I had to many health issues when I was a child and I couldn't participate in them.

Today the weather here is cold but nice. I hope that we don't get that storm that they are thinking we might get on Wednesday or Thursday. We have had our share.

Today I am in a lot of pain, more than usual. I have to go to physical therapy today in the pool. It does help some while I'm in it, but when I get out it still hurts. I know that I will keep this pain for the rest of my life, but it doesn't hurt to try to ease it up a bit. I wouldn't wish this pain on no one else.

Well, I hope you all have a great day and stay warm and safe. I will keep you in my heart and prayers.

I wish you all the BEST!

I agree, it is very sad loosing a pet. I didn't want another and I fought for two years but when I couldn't travel anymore with knees and hips with arthritis and pain, like now, he decided to get a dog. I find being in the 70 is a bit old to care for an animal, especially if you are hurting and they need care. Hailey is 2 years and now 2 months. I am waiting for the summer when she is 2 and half and calms down more. She is still on the Prozac but I can see no change so once she has heartworm done we will wein her off and doc will lessen medication for a month and then we can stop the one at the hospital said. I can't see blood test for liver every six months paying 200 each time and the med is not doing anything different.

Good Afternoon All,

I hope that everyone is staying warm and healthy and safe. The wind is blowing here like crazy. I am glad that we didn't get any of that snow.

I am sorry to hear about your neighbors dog. It is really to bad that these animals have to be getting all these diseases. All they ever ask for is our love and attention. We get so attached to them, it makes that much more sad when they get sick and die. They love unconditionally and all we can do is take the best care that we can to make their lives better.

I wish everyone the BEST!

My neighbor has a GD 6 years and it has cancer. The cncer has travel to the spine now. The dog is still taking walks and seems ok but they gave it 2 months.
She is heartbroken. I saw where a man lost his dog to bone cancer and he is walking all over the states for awareness to conquer it.

I understood you should use some dry dog food as it has all the stuff they need in there for bones and to grow strong. You can mix it in with the other food.

I heard corn is not good for dogs. Hailey eats bananas, apples, pears and peaches. She does not like stringbeans. Someone told me not to give her yams or broccoli.
