Spent too much time online today, but it did keep me from overeating. I also went to a 3-hour workshop on acting for Shakespeare. It is a dream of mine to get a part in a Shakespeare play, one where I actually audition and get the part! I have taken several classes where we had showcases that were challenging but rewarding. It's a bit of a long shot to get cast since I'm so much older than most of the actual characters and it's a lot more common for actors to play people older than they are, but not younger. In the mean time, I will still keep participating in Shakespeare stuff where I pay for my part!

The workshop was at the Coronado Community Center, so I went afterwards and got in around 8,000 steps near or on the beach. I was wearing ankle boots so I got a blister on one lower shin, but it was worth it. Low tide, nice sky, good walking temp with my jacket on.

I have the bad habit of not posting when I am floundering. I don't like having to keep reporting that I'm not keeping to my guidelines. Yes, there is some shame, which I try to dispel, but it's also because I don't want to just be rehashing it.

I completed an audition today and was able to wear a pair of pants that still fit pretty nice. But I don't want to keep testing the envelope.

I got through so much paper with my organizer, Nancy. It just helps so much to have someone there who knows so much about paperwork. She never tells me to do this or that, just guides me with questions or information. I have hope that I am going to keep refining until I learn to set up workable routines for dealing with it faster and sooner. I've also been running minimalist/decluttering videos while I do housework and am working on the kitchen. I will work on cabinets- mostly herbs and spices- for awhile today.

I have only space heaters in my small house. The one near me in my open living room (open to kitchen, too) has been running on the next to the lowest setting for two hours! That hardly ever happens. Rates have sure gone up. I thought my last bill was a mistake; it turns out I used about the same as I did in winter months in '19 and '18, but the bill is about 50% higher this year. Oh, well. It's not as if that is going to break me. It's worth an extra average of $2.50 a day to be warm for these months. I have plenty of winter days when the sun heats up my space really well!

And a great heater is just going outside!

Made an appointment with an organizer to help me with paperwork tomorrow. Got a class in Point Loma tonight. Will I get myself in gear to have time to walk over there before the class? Did not do my yoga yet today. Dang.

Got a little bit done, but enough to clear space for my maid to clean, so I am enjoying the house afterwards. I loved hearing the rain last night and this morning, but also walking to and from a lunch date after it cleared.

Auditioned for a senior talent show in March yesterday: will find out if I got in on Friday.

Going to an improv class today. Will practice sitting with my impatience! It's in Balboa Park, so I will get in a walk, too. I think I will walk down to the trolley station on Park and Broadway and renew my transit pass. However, I will likely be driving to dinner afterwards so won't take transit today.

I did not get out as much as I thought I would. Oh, well. I had coffee with a new man this morning. We went for a walk around the water from downtown through Seaport Village and back to Broadway and 3rd, where I took the bus. He is originally from Texas, but has lived all over the world, and likes our transit! He is living in Little Italy and takes the trolley all the time. It was a lot nippier and windier out that normal, but it was pleasant. and I got over 8,500 steps in, so it will be easy to get up to 10,000 later.

Had a bit of a wild and wooly 24 hours with food starting Friday night, but no binge foods. Things are normal again. I think I am getting a sense of what my meals need to be like to meet my new standard. It is a bit complicated because I am so low on starches in my kitchen now and I vowed not to buy any until I use up some other stocked items. However, I think it will be pretty easy to work in some rice, potatoes, barley, oats, or rye when the time comes. In the meantime, though I have long included avocado and nuts in my plan, they play a bigger role now because I am not getting my calories from some other foods. It's fun!

Not that we have had bad weather, but I am looking forward to the bit higher temps and sun coming up. GOT to get myself over to the water! The sunset from the edge of the Pershing Drive golf course was stupendous last night. Red light was getting reflected on one building long after the rest of the sky had gone blue. My iPhone takes disappointing pictures. I took one, but it didn't really get the effect. I guess I just have to have it in my memory, like the old days. emoticon

I was hoping my organizer would be available this week, but she is down with the flu. I will hire a local high school student this weekend to help with the yard this weekend. Not sure what I am doing today. I have felt stuck the last few days, overwhelmed. But I know the thing that has helped in the past is to set a timer for a certain time- 7, 11, 14, 15, 21 minutes- and work on a task for that long. If I get really drawn to a task, I set the timer for that for longer next time.

Skin still healing. Such an overcast day. Lazy morning. Will have a brunch later, as it's almost 10 and I am not hungry at all. I've decided to take one day a week off from tracking, as it was starting to feel to obsessive. That was yesterday. I had given myself permission already to eat more than usual. Had late lunch with friend and snacky dinner. I"m actually looking forward to more "order" today. It's also actually a great temperature- cool and cloudy- to go exercise a bit harder than usual. Not much sweat! Got no good reason not to.

Oops, been out of the loop. Had some problem spots (as in areas) frozen by doc this week. They look bad now but I hope to see improvement next week.And got prescription to treat rosacea. Some days it's more noticeable than otehrs, but since I know it usually gets worse and can damage skin, especially on the nose, to the point where it cannot be repaired, I wanted someone to look at my spots before they got "enraged."

Salvation Army is selling all their clothing for $2 each item today and tomorrow.. I made a special trip to the one in La Mesa and did find some tops and a table fan. Then on the way back from my dance class in Liberty Station, I went to the one on Sports Arena. And found more. I really did try to be choosy, though I haven't bought anything kind of silly for a long, long time. Today I got a straightline skirt that has some flower patterns made with fake jewels. Very campy. Now I have to go to more of the senior dances so I have a place to wear a skirt, especially one like that. I also got a polyester-ish top with wild 60's arty patterns, bell-sleeved. It's a hoot. Maybe for Halloween? We'll see. I got some regular stuff, too, and promise I will get rid of some things, too. Too pooped to go through my closet now.

I'm experimenting with eating a dinner of less starch and more fat in prep for a longer overnight fast. I keep reading about the wonder of ketones for the brain, at least for a period of time, and concerns with brain function and aging are driving my eating these days. Some say after 12 hours, the body exhausts its stored sugar and will convert to using ketones. So it's recommended to sometimes (more often for some, but it's controversial) go another four hours without food and let the body burn a different fuel. I am hoping that I might deplete my sugar even sooner and can wake up burning ketones, since they are an appetite suppressant. I have been waking up pretty hungry most mornings. I'm not trying to avoid hunger completely. I like my meals so much better when I'm hungry! But I'd like to have some time some mornings without those pangs while I do my yoga and whatever before I eat.

Did not get organizing done, but used two Indian Instantpot kits I agreed to try out for my cooking teacher, and they were delicious! My friend did not want to walk; I ended up not getting much activity in, even though I did have time between then and a singles dinner I went to near UTC. The dinner was meant to be very casual, and it was. I felt sorry for some of the men. There were only four women to six men, and three of the men were about 20 years younger than the women. Plus, people came from pretty far away. It must be even harder to meet new people in the outlying communities. I might get in touch with a couple of the women. I go to these as much to meet possible new gal pals.

I'm keeping to my plan. It is feeling a bit obsessive, but when I think about abandoning it and taking chances with my health, I decide it's still worth it to try to get familiar enough with it that I can do it with less attention. The body is giving me some fears about missing out on some delicious foods. "Do you really need to? Won't you be sorry if you don't eat things you like and still get sick?" Maybe I will decide later that it isn't worth the sacrifice, but it's too soon for that, especially when I really like my meals! And most hours of the day, I feel darn good.

Another gorgeous day outside. I did not get to the mess. I will have some time this morning before my lunch visitor, but I guess if worse comes to worse, I can haul the stuff out again. It's not an emergency!

Am hoping my lunch friend (from Mira Mesa) will be willing to go over to Coronado or some beach to walk. But anywhere is else is a good second choice, too. Just want to get some steps in with someone else!

Thanks for coming on to catch up, especially in such a busy season.

I am feeling kind of stuck this morning I had left some things out on my deck the other night not realizing that we were going to get some rain. When I woke up in the morning, I flew out there to pull the things inside, and I still haven’t dealt with them. It was all stuff I didn’t want to deal with in the first place! It has helped me a few times just to go ahead and tell people something like this online because then the sense of urgency seems to go up son and I finally push past the resistance. Let’s hope that happens after I finish this post.

Four times a year, I weigh myself for seven days in a row, and then average those weights. I think that is more accurate picture of my weight, even though I know it actually continues to fluctuate. I just did that this week. It was actually lower at the same time last year but I had been eating in a rather unusual way for a while. Around last June, it seemed like I tripped some kind of over eating wire and I did gain weight. I think I did not record that higher weight. I had been wanting to get it back into better control anyway, but having the year change to 2020 and a new decade inspired me. I am making some changes which are a little more complicated than normal, but so far it’s been pretty easy to cooperate with the plan. I live alone and rarely have to try to please anybody else, so I have nobody but myself to contend with. If my life becomes more social, it might be A little more complicated, but I’ll do my best to figure that out when the time comes. I keep saying I’m going to get more vigorous exercise in more consistently, but honestly, that hasn’t happened yet. However, I’m not condemning myself for it. I know that my weight is down from its height last summer, but even more important is that I am eating in a way more supportive of my cognitive abilities. Thankfully, it also supports the rest of my systems, too! How about that. 😉

Sorry I haven't been on much at all in any of the teams. Just too busy with work and other stuff, and getting even busier with the new tax season starting. Congrats for getting out and doing stuff and trying to continue to eating healthy.

I have been staying around 162 -163 for years now. But now with working full time in the office and pulling a lot of late nights working from home too, I am down in the 161's and staying down there so far. But if I go back up that would be okay with me too. Not so worried about a number on the scale, more just about trying to eat healthier foods and not binging on junk food. I still will eat chips or crackers and such on and off. But they are not the first thing I grab to fill hunger or bordom with.

Well take care, I will try to check in when I can. But I have a ton of bookkeeping to do with a tight deadline to get it done. I usually get about a month to finish it, but this time with the new tax season starting the boss wants me to try to get it done in about a week, so that is a lot of pressure on me right now. Have been to two doctor's appointments with an older friend. Things seemed bad but are looking up for her, but it makes me glad I am getting the oomph to stick more closely to an eating plan I feel is better for aging. Her problems were not caused by eating, but it just shows we never know when things can change for us and we don't have the freedom to pursue life as we did before. Got to get moving more. Less writing Spark, more moving Spark!

Got an acting class tonight: the first one that is really devoted to the basics of acting. I'm a little nervous because I was supposed to learn about five lines of script. Not long, but it's almost a tongue twister, rather like e.e. cummings poetry, if anyone knows what that is. I sometimes have it, but then I'll go to say it again and I get tripped up. I THINK I want to be a serious student but then I procrastinate on something so basic. Well, we'll see. I know someone who is in a master class by the same teacher. It started last night. She thought it was great. She already has a scene with a partner and they are supposed to have at least half of a 15-minute scene memorized by next week. A new acquaintance in a walking group I'm in took the class I'm in before. They had to write a little scripts that they then acted out. She loved the writing but not the acting. I'm the opposite: give me a script! If learn it, I'm happy to go on stage. I swear I'll start sooner next time.

I've instituted a new eating plan. Actually it's not that far off from where I've been but I am experimenting with 10 or fewer added sugar grams a day. That is about the amount in a few squares of high cacao dark chocolate, almost as if having no sweets. I still use stevia in my coffee, usually one big cup a day, rarely two. I avoided ever cutting any food out of my life previously but as I age, there are such good reasons (brain health, anti-aging) to cut way back on sugar . In fact, I may have already done a fair amount of damage because I was such an intense sweet eater in middle age and a lot of the foundation of aging is started in middle age. But I can't change the past, so I can do what I can do now. I don't live a life where I have people pushing desserts on me a lot, so I have no one but myself to contend with. I don't feel anymore that I am giving up anything that I somehow "deserve." The brain and cells know nothing about deserving anything. They are just machines that will do whatever they do with the fuel I give. Of course, it's all an odds game. Some people will overeat everything and live long, relatively healthy lives. Some will follow the best rules and still develop problems. But for now, I'm willing to give myself the best odds I think I can. Then if something happens, I'll at least know I did my part.

I did go to the class; it was a little strange. Most of the people have been going for a long time: I wonder how much they've progressed. It seemed more like a way to keep the brain "jumping" than really learning improv. When I walked in, nearly everybody reacted like, "Who is this? Fresh blood?" One of the men complimented me for a skit I was in; then I saw him at a senior dance yesterday, and I had to beg him to dance with me. Geesh. The class is free, so I will try it for a few weeks at least.

The senior dance was probably the eighth or ninth time for me. There was another man from the class there. I asked him to dance as well. We did, he said nice things, but never asked me again. I felt like I was working hard to get conversation out of him, though he was smelling and saying complimentary things. He didn't ask me anything. We had actually danced at two other dances, but in the improv class, he didn't remember me at all, just as he hadn't remembered the second time. Is it that I don't stand out, or no one does at these things? I danced with a sweet man who had a very strong accent. After sitting with him and his wife for a bit, and he kept talking in a way I couldn't understand, his wife told him to stop speaking Hebrew. As they walked away, she confided in me that he is in stage IV Alzheimer's. Holy moly. But he could dance decently.

Trying to motivate myself to go check out a senior's improv class early this afternoon in Balboa Park. Finally getting to clean out fridge. MUST finish dishes and clean sink. Thought my maid was coming today but it's next week. Getting ahead of the game! Kicking myself a bit because it's been sunny and gorgeous for days; now it's overcast and chilly but I didn't get out before. I still can. Not really that cold. I will take bus to improv class; that involves some walking for sure.

Took the bus (I got a 30-day senior pass for $23) to a science lecture in Balboa Park- how nice it is to have a team that knows where I'm talking about!- then stopped on the way home to climb the parking tower at City College twice. I still got in fewer than 5000 steps. Drat.

On plan with food today. It's such a good feeling. It helped that I took some lunch with me to the park. I found the boots I wore, which have felt comfortable in other environments, were not right for an extended walk in the park. I lost momentum at home. Will likely walk with a Boomer group tomorrow by Mission Bay, my first time back with them in about a month. That hour with them makes a real dent in getting to 10,000 steps. My phone tells me I averaged around 5,000 a day last year. I had so many low count days that I'm optimistic about improving the average. I have to keep remembering how much it contributes to brain health. I want a brain that can handle old age like a younger person!

Wow, I have been gone a long time!

The trip was not so fun, not worth many details about it. I am feeling inspired to make the 2020's a new chapter in several ways. I feel I am ready to get to the next level in healthy eating and movement, and to be more vigilant with strategies to deal with anxiety and brain health. I vow, even as I sit here, to get outside in the sunshine more, as several cities I have on my weather app, because I know people in those places, have rain, snow, or overcast. Yet I know some of those people get outside for a walk nearly every day! My eating mentor walks to work in Cambridge every day, too. When asked why he walks to work, he says his boss would fire him if he didn't, sidestepping the weather issue. I don't know if he wears Nikes, but he sure just does it.

Going to tap dance, after a four week hiatus, at 1.

Doing my winter season autophagy plan, on day 3. It's more precise than I like to be but it's for a good purpose and not forever. I will probably be going away for the weekend for a yoga retreat, right up the alley of disciplined eating. Going to have to pack some food, but that's fine, too.

Wish I were a better leader or whatever it takes to have an active team. But I'm pretty sure there are very few active members, though the roster looks big. Most have come and gone.


Going on a trip to Mexico- won't get into the details of why I am not superexcited- on Tuesday for eight days. Am a wimp enough in "winter" that I am looking forward to the warmer weather. Geesh, how many cool days have we had, 10?

Pleased with my eating on Thanksgiving. Was going overboard a bit this morning with so many easy leftovers around, though no real junk, so put my foot down. Will enjoy a dinner I've waited for.

Will be aiming to eat just about all the food n the fridge besides condiments i before I leave. May have to freeze some. Went to an Indian friend's for txgiving and have several servings of great peanut dal! He avoids leftover food - ayurvedic tent-and cooks way too much, so I benefit. Or maybe eating leftovers is taking a toll I don't know? But it's not a habit I am willing to change right now.

Maybe I should call this the monthly chat? I've been so out of it!

Too much to go into detail but have had the organizer come four times and I am so pleased! I've been involved in some of my acting stuff and am developing a sweet friendship with a fun man. I may have met a new friend at a meetup Wednesday. We shall see. Have to keep preparing for an audition MOnday night and will go to a dance class in Encinitas soon.

Pro organizer came for second time yesterday. So worth it! We have gone through every item in my storage/garage- except some paper and photos, the sentimental stuff she said I can go through later since it amounts only to a little more than a regular sized cardboard box. Oh, also Xmas stuff, but most of that is in some kind of container anyway. I determined which items live in the garage and which in the storage area for now. I still have steps to take to clean, donate, or try to sell, but the rest of it went out with the trash or recycling today. But in essence the worst is done. What a feeling! I have her coming next week to start on my yard, which I warned her will not be as easy because I am not as ready to let some of that stuff go. However, she said she does not feel she is supposed to convince me to get rid of stuff but just to make sure I have considered the full situation.

Two victories in the decluttering: found a shoe I had been looking for for a year and a half (accidentally got put in bag with leg brace I had for broken metatarsal). I LOVED that pair of shoes and could never bring myself to throw out the one I still had. I also realized a strange knob that I was about to throw out went to the stand for the dulcimer I bought nearly five years ago but rarely took out of its case. I had just happened to have a musician friend set it up for me a couple of days before, or I wouldn't have known the knob was missing. Serendipity!

I am in a play this weekend. There are six 10-minute plays being staged at North Park Vaudeville and Candy shop on Friday, Sat, and Sun. and I have a major part in one. I think it might be the only serious one in the bunch. It has suspense. My director is very pleased with our performances; I hope he's right about us! Not that I really care but I would like to do a job that is a little better than some of the community theater stuff I've seen on youtube. I have a dress rehearsal this

I'm doing my special eating plan (three or four times a year) because I knew I'd be keyed up for the performance and might have been prone to nervous eating. I couldn't live with this kind of rigor all the time, although I do aspire to less random eating than I sometimes get into, but the rewards are worth it, even though they are mostly mental as I don't have any blood tests done to check the results. It's not for weight loss; the doctor (Ph.D) who formulated the plan has found that many of the good effects last between repeated bouts even if the person doesn't greatly improve their eating, but I also aspire to use his ideas for longevity as well. As I said in a previous post, it can be challenging, especially in social situations. But I don't want to give up, either. I feel lucky that I don't have a LOT Of pressure from other people to eat any certain way.

Still have not eaten the cake and was only slightly even tempted once. This is progress! It can sure take a long time-years. I have been rereading The Hungry Brain, being reminded how powerful the forces are against moderate eating. He even says at one point on his website that not all cases of obesity can be reversed but that does not mean that people are not better off eating less industrial food. He eats an incredibly restrictive diet by the American standard and he has never had a weight problem! His brain research has just shown him how seductive and damaging sweet, seed oils, and added salt can be. It has continued to dampen my pleasure in eating out and that does feel like a bit of a difficult loss. I have lost all my weight still eating a percentage of outside prepared food that I am not comfortable with any more. But honestly the trade off is not as easy as the other ones I made to get here. I might be repeating myself but I believe as I get older that rather than giving up I want to increase my odds of healthy aging and there are only a few ways an individual can influence that. Eating is a MAJOR one, but one that our culture is in huge ignorance or denial about. Even slim cultures eat foods that shorten their healthy years. But maybe the fun is worth it? Traditional long lived cultures eat incredibly plain food by our standards because they lack access to easy strong flavoring and refined foods.

Not bad with food most of the last few days. I planned for tuxedo mousse cake from Costco for my birthday. A few slices are wrapped in the freezer, but they have not been calling to me. I went to a little discount store today because I had a coupon for 25% one regular item; I did get a microdermabrasion device. Not cheap but certainly cheaper than professional sessions. I have run into a woman I know over the years and her skin looked terrific. She said she has been using one for years. This one had very good reviews online. But the reason I brought up the store is because I often buy some kind of snack food there and today I passed it up. I am hoping I have broken that habit. Lord knows I have eaten plenty of that food in my life so it's not as if I'm missing out. I don't even say I'll never eat crackers or chips again, but really not often. (In fact, I ate some chips and hummus sample at Costco>) I just feel I get more pleasure and sustenance from what someone calls "wet carbs": whole grains that are cooked in water, not ground into flour with the liquid basically baked out.

My Aging Creatively dance class has resumed. It never had a lot of attendees but I was the only one today. I don't actually prefer that, but it's in a community where I'm guessing it isn't likely to get as many takers, even though it's free to seniors and I know there are plenty of them in a 1-mile radius. But it's only the first week back after a 4-month break. Then again I think we rarely had four people at a class last spring. It's not really a very efficient use of the donated funds, as it came from a grant. I know if I donated money for such a purpose, I would not be happy that so few people show up, since the dance teacher gets paid the same amount. I don't know much about marketing, so I don't know how they could attract more people, and I doubt they want to spend a lot on it since they don't make any more money just because more students show up. Oh, well.

Had three events in a row yesterday and then fell apart in my eating. I don't think it was because of the packed schedule. I developed a habit of eating after a weekly meeting and it proved too strong to kick. I wonder if I had had my dinner more firmly in my mind, so that I could look forward to it? That's a behavior strategy that used to work for me. So maybe I should do that today, though there is not the same obstacle.

Got to get out! I"m considering walking to the bus to go to Costco to get another jar of a delicious pesto they make, but it is one of the foods I went overboard on yesterday. Maybe I should just try to cobble my own version of it for now. They don't use the best oil anyway.

Rehearsal went fine. Sunday I went to my philosophy meet out of town, then a short stop at why was supposed to be a small music festival where I didn’t hear any music until the last few minutes I could stay because I needed to get dinner for a friend I had invited over before we went to a fundraiser for the Shakespeare society.

Got in my yoga today, plus a gentle dance class and a couple of hours of prepping and freezing some food for easy meal assembly.

Nervous today about play rehearsal, but I keep procrastinating on continuing to try to memorize lines! Do I actually like being nervous? I left the day open for it, but keep not doing it. Maybe I should have been busier?

I really missed my tap class when I was gone. We got a new teacher and only four of us showed up yesterday. I have a feeling the others might have been too attached to how the previous teacher taught. She was very sweet and pretty good but I see value in this teacher as well. I just hope the class keeps going. I guess it will because there is an intermediate class right after ours and it never has very many people, but they keep offering it. I think they get some kind of subsidy because it is for people over 55.

Been to Washington, Idaho and back. Very cool and overcast up there. I liked it! Missed the weekend heat here. Whew. It seems cooler than normal this year but we might still get some Santa Ana's.

I usually pride myself on trying to fit in eating-wise but I have gotten more selective about my eating in the last several months. It was not a problem at my friend's and my sister didn't get too upset, but I ended up pretty much making my own dinner a couple of nights. I just didn't want to have meat. I am just so used to eating so many more vegetables than other people, esp. my sister and husband. They have all kinds of health problems but they seem mystified by my choices. Of course, I have no guarantee that I won't develop something serious later, which they would probably point to and say, See? It doesn't help to eat better. But I want to increase my odds of a healthier old age. That's all you ever get anyway: odds.

The weight I gained a couple of months ago is holding on. It's possible the lower weight wasn't really right for me. We'll see after a couple of months of better eating. I feel more accepting of my new routine, but only time will tell.

Well, as before, I have dropped the ball on this chat is not so daily. I apologize. I am in Washington state visiting a friend who used to live in San Diego and leaving Thursday to visit my sister in Idaho. I’ve continued my yoga routine and eating is going well without a tremendous amount of effort, so I am grateful for that. It has been overcast and even rainy, and I am finding that very restful. My friend lives in a heavily forested area, and I am loving all the green.

Not sure if I'm repeating myself, but cooling my living room only is about a dollar a day because I just have a window a/c, so it doesn't cool the whole house. I got the a/c-er about 16 years ago at Costco for $200 and it is still working great. It sure is worth it. I keep a small fan on me in bed on the hottest nights. I have been making an effort to be out of the house with it off during the high-cost hours just to see if it will make a difference but we haven't had as hot an August as last year, I don't think.

I did a yoga workshop this last weekend and boy, was it challenging. The hardest part was that they had us sitting on the floor in between teaching and trying postures. I found out later I could have insisted that I sit in a chair. I was careful to protect my knees, but then it puts strain on the hips, esp. my right one. I did commit in my mind to do the series I was taught for 90 days (they recommend 180, but that sounded like an eternity to me!). I've done the series every day so far and I am still very sore. Maybe that's part of being older; we just don't recover as we did when younger.

I met a new woman on Tuesday who retired relatively recently as well and is trying to fill up her time; she gave me her phone number, so I invited her to the weekly outdoor movie in Balboa Park sponsored by the art museum. I don't listen to the news and didn't know there had been a big gas leak. The zoo and art museum were closed and the movie cancelled. But, there was another half hour of music (big band swing) at the Organ Pavilion, so we went there and then walked a bit more. I couldn't tell if she would really be interested in getting together more, but I would. I'll suggest a few things as they come up.

I got a couple of small parts in two 10-minute plays to be performed in October. First rehearsal is Sunday. I think there is only one other role in the play, so it will be the director and the two of us. I met him even before the auditions because he has worked with my Shakespeare classmate Shelly. He is from Holland. What's it like to get involved in theater in another county?Seems you'd have to be very determined. .

I haven't been on a lot either. I am still working a lot and the warmer weather has made it so I don't want to spend a lot of time in our room with the computers. Just too warm in there. Our house gets too warm and the back rooms just don't cool off either. The living room cools off better because we can open the two doors by it, the front door and a sliding glass door that goes out to our fenced in part of our yard. So I either spend more time at work or in the living room right now trying to beat the warm weather.

I really miss the a/c unit that I had when I was renting yrs ago, it cooled the place down really fast and kept it cool in the summer. And in the winter there was a heater that worked with the same switch that really helped too. That is how ours at work is too, you can turn it to cool air or warm air.

So sorry I have been MIA.

Have had several good eating days. Have been retreading a book by a favorite longevity author. It’s pretty idealistic but I think it does mostly reflect real research. He is not a medical doctor but has worked in tandem with doctors on people with serious problems. It’s not about dieting though he does recommend making the effort to limit amounts until a target waist size and “normal “ BMI is achieved. He talks a fair amount about some of the changes he recommends for people over 65, the category I now fit into. It has helped me not impulse buy some bingey fooods when I got some urges. He’s not about trying to have a perfect physique as that doesn’t seem to have much to do with longevity. And trying to get or stay very thin in old age is not a goal at all. It’s all about being disease free for decades beyond when Americans typically start experiencing degenerative problems. I had not been eating as many veggies as I used to, and it’s got me back into that a bit. It’s pretty frightening how far our food supply is from what is really needed. We bring a lot of problems on ourselves, though some people are legitimately unlucky.

Got to get my one minute of exercise in before bed. I belong to a site that offers three basic exercises and an easy record keeping feature. It offers much more comprehensive advice for a price. I’ll stick to free at least until I’ve had three consecutive months of relatively steady participation. I intend to supplement it with continued walking and some added short bouts of intense exercise. But that I can do on my own.

I honestly can't imagine living without AC after I found out that it got up to 106 deg. inside my place one day while I was at work during a Santa Ana. Problem is that the walls heat up so much that they exude heat all night long so the bedroom hardly cools off at night. I'm lucky that I live in a small place and can cool the living area, which is all I do. I got a free tightly-woven mat at a neighborhood potluck/castoff-swap awhile ago and will use that on my deck plus my sofa cushions to sleep on when the really hot days come. I'm behind a wooden fence so it will be pretty private. I do have an overhead fan in the dining area that helps, too, and a small table fan for spot "breezes." Well, in less than 60 days, the worst heat will be over. I may go out of town sometime in September to Washington and Idaho. Hope that coincides with missing a Santa Ana! OF course, that will cost a lot more than just cooling my place, but I'll be visiting people and just having a change of scene.

Of course, I live with limitations at my place that other people couldn't see tolerating, so it all evens out.

Got some gardening done, sticking mostly to the shifting sites with shade, including hunched over under my deck pulling weeds. In spring, I got some of that fabric that is supposed to prevent them, but need to do a lot more prep work before I put it down. I had thought my tangerine tree looked like it might skip a year producing fruit because I saw so many blossoms on the ground, but I see the teeny fruits coming out now. I wish I knew why my lemon tree is producing so much less fruit, though I can't claim that I would do a lot to reverse that. I don't do that much to take care of them.

That sounds like good plans!

No A/C at home, just some fans, and it has been really hot and muggy in the house for weeks now and looks like it will be this way for at least another few weeks. At least there is A/C at work, so been spending more time there working on my lap top then stuck in our hot house in our computer room that is the hottest area in the house. Been really busy with bookkeeping, running to clients and other stuff for work. All my best to you always. Take care

We went to Plumeria, a vegetarian restaurant in University Heights. My gosh, it was good. We had leftovers that I took home since she was not going to keep food in her hotel room. They flavored two more meals.

But overall, my eating has still not been good. Random choices are the problem, as well as convincing myself that I will have only one portion of snack foods that I buy. I may be able to pull that off at some point, but for now, meaning today through Sunday, I commit to not buying any packaged snacks.I've got plenty of other food and will be attending a memorial service and potluck tomorrow where I will have lots of good food to eat.

My tap class has been on hiatus and is starting up again today, so I'm looking forward to that, as well as to a later picnic/outdoor concert at Pioneer Park with an old friend today. Though my utilities bill is actually not that high- I consider the extra $1.25 a day, if needed, to keep the place reasonably cool acceptable-, I am getting a kick out of being out of the house during the high-rate hours of 4-9. I'm also planning to take the bus. I"m not sure I used it for enough rides last month to pay for itself. It commits me to more walking, too, without having to allot a dedicated hour or so to it. The other night going to Balboa Park and dancing got me over 10,000 steps even though I hadn't done much beforehand that day.

Welll, eating a package of cookie dough or a Costco-sized bag of popcorn in a few hours is a little more slack than I think I should give myself! But I get what you mean. I have chosen pizza a couple of times when I could have come home pretty easily and heated something better. Onwards!

I'm also erratic with exercise but don't feel so annoyed by that/ Maybe because I've rarely gone more than a month being consistent with exercise but my eating was pretty good for several years! Ha ha, I guess it's like longing for youth.

Today I am very likely getting together with a Sparker from the L.A. area who's here for ComiCon. This is the kind of time I wish I felt I could afford a bigger place, as I would like to offer hospitality to people. I have a few friends who feel close enough that they can stay in my 1-bdrm apartment. She has a lovely house, and I stayed with her once. We've known each other online for nine years. That's pretty cool.

With our weather going back and forth from cooler days to warmer or hotter days, I am not eating the same right now either. Some of the hotter days, I just don't feel hungry. Or just don't want to eat the stuff I would usually eat. So I am just listening more to what my body is wanting. But it is all pretty much just evening out. I had already gone up some with the winter. And now I am pretty much just maintaining that. If I lose some great, but I am not concentrating on that, even though I know my primary doctor would like that. I am just trying to eat mostly healthy, but allow myself some treats on and off.

I would say do whatever you feel is best for you at the moment and cut yourself some slack. With our weather going back and forth. With you going through a big change in your life with being retired now, and getting to do some traveling and such. Just do what you feel is best for you in the moment. All my best to you always.

I listened to some books on tape and forgot about worrying about the car. It did fine and the has usage was good, if I did the calculations right.

My eating has been so erratic but I finally got exasperated/scared enough that I've been able to rein it back in the last couple of days. I'm trying not to be too discourage by having gained about 8 lbs. It doesn't sound like much but it has finally affected the fit of my clothes, so I have a lot fewer pants that are comfortable. I can't see myself consistently eating very little food and I think I"m at the point at which that's what I'd have to do to lose. Well, we'll see how it goes after I've been back eating reasonably for a few weeks. I'm allowing myself some leeway in what I eat, but controlling amounts and frequency more than I had been. That is what has usually worked in the past. It will take some repeated mental gymnastics as well, I'm sure.

It made me really wonder about truckers. It really slows down the trip if you have to get off the freeway and stand every hour. I'm going to take a trip this weekend; I have to admit I won/'t be stopping every hour. But then again, I don't drive for a living.

Once again, have dawdled and now am reluctant to go do much yard work not that the sun is coming out. Or maybe that should be my penance.

I go to a meeting for clutterers and had told them about the smoke smell in my car. I've since paid $200 for an interior cleaning and new cabin air filters. It's better, but I noticed it a little odor still yesterday. A smoker at the meeting told me afterwards that I should have used a "bomb" that you can buy at Pep Boys for under $10. (People are not allowed to give advice during the meeting and by the end he had forgotten to tell me.) But I kept thinking about the smoke in the carpet and cushions, so I was itching to get that shampooing done. I might still use one.

I'll get to see this weekend how the car does using gas. I'm hoping my first calculations were wrong, because it was 27 mpg. My old car gets about 33 and this new one is a hybrid, so I expected much better. I'm worried because someone told me that older hybrid batteries lose power and need more gas. I thought I mentioned something about that to my mechanic, who brokered the deal, but he said he didn't think it would be an issue. If it's a problem, I'll be calling him, though I'm not sure what he can do now. It was a private purchase. I took my chances!

Yes, I was told that long ago by doctors, and so I have always got up and moved around every hour or so. The woman helping me at PT told me that too. I have always with this job got up a lot on and off during those long hours of work in the office and at home. But still was uncomfortable. My PT lady told me about the knee and hip thing too. Turns out that was a lot of my problem with driving around in my truck for work. And with some of the chairs too. The truck bench is higher where your knees would be, and the back part of the bench is tipped back too, and there is no adjustment to it. Now my bottom is sitting on folded up towels to raise my bottom up out of the hole, and I have one folded up for the small of my back too. My new chair for home is more even than my last one, and the back is straight up, and doesn't dip my back wards if I lean back into the back of the chair. So it supports my back a lot better than the old one. I was going to donate my old chair but the bf's son took it it sit on for playing on his Xbox instead of sitting on a wooden stool. There is a nice comfortable couch to sit on when he plays also. But sometimes he was using the stool to sit closer to the screen. Sometime he is sitting on the couch and using the chair as a foot stool, as it sits lower so it is more comfortable than putting his feet up on the wooden stool.

Okay, you didn't ask, and I don't mean to preach, but I went to a lecture the first week of June where a researcher said that sitting is the new smoking in terms of risk for heart disease and diabetes. She said the research shows that even TWO HOURS a day of exercise does not make up for long stretches of sitting. The good news is the effect can be countered simply by standing up at least every hour, though she recommended more variations. So, love that chair, but stand up often! She said it's the angle of the knee and hip that is the problem.

I've had a week of feeliing lost, but won't go into it. I will link the blog I wrote about seeing Paul McCartney at Petco on Saturday. Talk about luck!

I hope you are all doing well.

I am still dealing with issues on my right side, especially the right leg. But it is slowly getting better. I bought myself a nice gaming chair for home computer work, I got it on sale half off. It has arms that are movable so I can have them down or flip them up against the side of the chair out of the way. I was looking at the tasks chairs without arms like I use to have. But seeing that they were only rated for 4-6 hours. The gaming chair was rated for 6-8 hours and would end up costing me the same as a task chair since I got an online offer for half off. So I went with the gaming chair, as sometimes I can be sitting doing bookkeeping for 8 or more hours a day at home, for several days in a row. So I thought this would be the more comfortable one. I like that I could lock the back in place so it didn't rock back on me either. So it would give my back more support, and it is higher backed than the task chairs too. My side is doing much better since Physical Therapy and the new chair. I finished my allowed visits for PT on the 14th, so now I just have to keep up with the exercises at home. They said it could take several more months before all the stiffness in my leg went away. So I really have to keep up those exercises to hope to accomplish that.

I go back to the heart doctor next Wednesday to find out the test results they did on my heart and neck veins.

Over all I am doing good, just still busy with work.

I have to strengthen my core and watch my posture. Try to sit in chairs that give me good support for my posture. As the issues with the spine and back are causing issues with my side and leg.

I have been pumping weights with my legs, pulling weights with my arms, doing balancing stuff and other stuff. Today they put me on an exercise bike for a bit too.

Well I better get ready to go into work.

I sure am not keeping up here, am I! Sorry you have so many physical issues to juggle. I have not such excuses.

My eating continues to be off track. I'll think I"m ready to be back in the groove but then the urges come and off I go. However, all pants still fit. Maybe that's not a good thing...

Going tomorrow for my late brother's belated memorial service in the afternoon and then my youngest niece's high school graduation party in the evening. She is the last of that generation in my family to graduate. She completed a grueling advanced curriculum and is receiving a ton of awards and some scholarship money. The actual graduation is today but there are so many graduates that only a few spectators from each family can attend it. I'm not one. Not grieving over it! I feel a little bad for her that her party day will always be associated with the memorial service. It's possible she and her mom (my niece-in-law) won't even come because of getting ready for the party, but I hope so. We'll do this only once. Her half sister will be there. She just completed her first year of a Ph.D program in media. All of her impetus has come from herself. No one in her immediate family pushed for that for sure. None of her parents (mom, biological dad, my nephew the stepdad) went to college. She never even talked about it with my sister or me, and we've both got degrees. There was a time it sounded enviable to me, and does a little, but now it just seems like a lot of blah blah. Especially if she wants to make films, but maybe she just wants to turn around and teach. I resisted becoming a teacher just because that sounds so much like a snake swallowing its tail to me these days. I'm glad I did some other stuff, too.

Well my appts didn't go as I had them first set up, everyone wanted to reschedule to later in the month instead of the beginning of the month, but my primary care doctor rescheduled into the start of June, so it all is working out. I have seen all the specialist now.

I have been in PT sessions for a few weeks now, supposedly my scoliosis is causing issues with my spine again, and that is causing issues with my nerves and muscles. My right side of my back and right side oblique muscles are all stiff, and my upper right thigh and groin area is the same. So lots off new stretching exercises and exercises with weights, and balance ball. Trying to strengthen my core and such.

My right hand and arm was all better by the time I got to see the OT specialist, so I don't have to do any more with her. She just gave me a hand out document with exercises to do at home to keep it that way.

The heart specialist had my have an ultra sound of my heart today, and next week they will do one on my neck to check out the veins in it. And then I will go back to him before the end of June to get the results of the test and find out if he is going to have me do anything else.

Because of my doctor appointment today, I will go into the office later today instead of in the early morning.

I am cross posting.

Was gone for the weekend out of state which involved 930 miles round trip. Some beautiful scenery but traffic I should have guessed at on the way back, plus some upsetting news on the way, led to my forgetting to top off the tank before returning the rental car-to the tune of 10 bucks a gallon to refill the tank. Curses!

I had been considering some rather strict food limitations to my plan (to see if they would cut down on my desires, as some claim they do) but decided I should start with going back to sticking most of the time to meal contents/sizes that have worked for me in the past, even if I don't find them as satisfying in terms of pleasure as I once did. It can be tricky to figure out how much flexibility to include. People with compulsive eating history can have a hard time having every meal open to decision-making (and it's not the way it's done in slim cultures, which has been one of my general guides for success since 2010). I may keep track for awhile of the certain foods I feel lend themselves to my overeating them, though I have been notoriously unwilling to do that in the past. I am not willing to track all my food all the time and have mostly maintained without it. Some of them I don't actually like enough to have anymore; the others, I am willing to see how well it works out trying to manage them.

Had a meeting with a guy doing some work on my garage (that had been the source of the upsetting news) that went better than I thought it would. Let's see now if things unfold as implied.

Got a new friend coming for dinner tonight. I warned her that she will be a guinea pig for my trying some new recipes. I actually like my food fine, but I don't think all of it would please other palates, and I want to do more entertaining, so I'm trying to experiment more. She claims she'll eat anything!

Did a long hike at Mr. Fortuna with two others. Friend's counter said about 6 miles, mine said closer to 7. We walked for nearly three hours, with just a few stops. It didn't seem that long. Overcast and light rain for about 10 minutes. Temperature was great, no overheating!

Found a Vietnamese vegan restaurant where each entree is only $5. And the serving was an amount that I didn't feel bad eating all of. They've been in business only 4 months. It wasn't full at lunch time. Hmm. Hope they stay open...

I did some helping for a friend moving and some volunteering f(2 days) or the Zydeco festival at Spanish Landing, plus my out of town meeting, so I have not been posting. I walked/danced over 8 miles on Friday and just under 8 miles on Sunday.

Yestrerday, I bought a senior pass f($18) or the transit system and took the trolley out to Lemon Grove for the next-to-the-last dance class of a series I've been taking since February- free. Very comfortable trip. However, the 99cent store there was having a going-out-of-business sale that I didn't feel I could take advantage of because I would have had to carry everything, not to mention that there were already a lot of people in line with baskets full of merchandise that would have taken quite awhile to add up. Just as well. It wouldn't be worth the gas to drive back, I don't think. If I really need something, there's one about1.4 miles from my house. I can take the bus partway! Now that I have the pass, I have to be sure to use it often enough to justify the pass amount. A one-way bus ride for a senior is $1.10 and $1.25 for the trolley; there are no transfers anymore. So I have to ride enough times to add up to another $15.50. I used my car yesterday and parked on Market Street, but will use the bus totally next week for that class, so that's another $4.70. But I don't think it's viable for tonight's class getting out at 10 at Liberty Station.

Got a friend from Scripps Ranch coming to meet me for a walk-and-talk along the river in Mission Valley. I hope we can get there from the Ross parking lot. I know I've been on it before but I can't remember where I entered. She's younger and a lot more fit than I am, but since I'm still feeling some light cold symptoms, I'm opting for flat and relatively easy.


My new ratio plan means I have to be more careful in choosing whether I want much fruit or starch at my meal, since they are what the higher fat is replacing. So far, I'm feeling okay about the amounts.

I'm experimenting with a specific ratio of macronutrients for the month of May. I don't want to get too involved in the whys and wherefores because I it already seems a bit more like my old obsessive self about it all, but it's mostly about satiety (and health.) . Today, I ended up having a quick coffee before I headed out for a haircut, then lunch out. When I logged my food- which I am doing for awhile, just to get a sense of what meals need to be like to get the ratio, and then I'll quit-, before I remembered that I had started off with a banana and some full fat plain yogurt before my meal (I wasn't sure where I was going to get a meal), it came out within a couple of percent of what I was aiming for. Too bad I hadn't known I'd stumble on this Greek place. (I also stumbled on a branch of my bank. It's a local one that doesn't have a lot of branches like the big banks do, and I needed to deposit a check so it was lucky.) I like thinking that I can wing it at times when I'm out.

Took a migraine pain killer today and it really helped with sinus pain. I feel on the mend, but still taking it easy. Less appetite and going with that for the most part.

Drove over 1,000 miles between midday Friday and Monday evening. Got in a ton of walking (and lots of small hills) while in Santa Cruz. My eating was pretty dysfunctional. I intend to make May a much better month. Today was a great start, even though I ate two meals out. Enjoyed a walk with friends midday and went to a ukulele meetup though I go just to sing for now. But I forgot I had signed up for a webinar that I'm a bit sorry I missed.

Went to a senior dance again today. They happen twice a month. I wonder if I look as old as many others. I think many are actually quite a bit older, say in their 70’s. The numbers are dwindling. I know there must be several hundred if not thousand senior citizens living within five miles. There was only one man there for the lesson and he quit partway through. I left an hour early to do laundry before my trip.

I’m leaving tomorrow midday or later for my college reunion in Santa Cruz, stopping in Coalinga for the night. I was thinking it would be cheaper to stay at a town farther away and then drive-in in the morning, but I realize now the Airbnb I booked in Santa Cruz wouldn’t have been that much more to stay at Friday night. Oh, well, live and learn. It’s going to be a whirlwind trip. I’ll be spending barely any time in either room. I’m sleeping at friends’ in Berkeley Sunday night and coming straight back Monday. Rental car. Wish I had a better car of my own so I could have stayed longer. Next time.

Jan, continued healing.


Went to a Boomer monthly noon time bowling event. Then lunch at Chinese buffet. Got it to go. Under $6! I did not sleep until 3 a.m. last night and only until about 8, even though I took a sleeping pill. Went to Costco and was so tired afterwards that I put the seat back in my car and dozed. That was pretty much my day.

I finished my spring program and have unfortunately rebounded in my eating. Oh, well. The research shows that most of the health benefits remain in between cycles, even if my eating isn’t ideal. So I will keep doing this process, but I’m not due for it again until near the summer solstice. I’ve been getting in some decent walking recently and was busy with some social events all coming together in a way that doesn’t usually happen for me. But I’m still not getting my house and garage straightened away. I just heard that there’s going to be rain this afternoon. Will I get paper decluttering and organizing done?

Sorry, I have been so busy, I have a hard time keeping up in here. I got all three appts set before I have to go back to my doctor. I have a heart specialist and OT the first week of May, and the following week I have PT. Then the next week I see my doctor.

I hope all is going well for you. I need to get ready for work now. I have to drive around Escondido and then up the coast picking up bookkeeping today, and then back to the office to run a payroll. Not sure what else I will have to do today or how long I will have to work today.

My car was in the shop and I decided not to skip going to a senior dance, so I took the bus and walked. Same for picking up my car. Got some good exercise in but feel like I really needed to wind down and missed out on getting together with a friend I hadn't seen in ages and who rarely has nights off. Plus,, I had to spend another $150 on a car I said I wouldn't spend another penny on. Too many details on that for tonight.

I was so hungry for my last meal today on this plan but felt great after I finished it and have stayed content the whole evening, even though my total calories for the day are less than half of what I might normally eat. A nice ending!

I'm doing a special 5-day eating program (for cell regeneration and a few other things, but not weight loss) that I do 4x a year. It involves eating quite a bit less food than normal, and very precise nutrient ratios. WAY more planning and weighing and tracking than I normally do. However, it normally isn't hard for the first few days, except for all the trouble. but this time, I got hungry on day 1. Before my meals today, I felt so driven to eat, but then very good afterwards, with no desire to keep eating. The fat content (from nuts and avocado) is higher than I usually eat. Today I ate less than half the calories I normally would (no, this does NOT slow metabolism at this point), and yet I feel very content right now four hours after the last meal. I don't always feel this good when I've eaten more. Yet, I wouldn't choose to live like this indefinitely, unless it was to reverse a serious health problem. Eating out would be very complicated. I don't find it much fun to eat out and end up choosing really plain foods I could eat at home. Then again, I don't like eating out as much as I used to because I don't enjoy so many of the over-the-top foods that most of the menus these days are made up of. I guess I'm just a crotchety old lady!

I got together with a walking group this morning and then forgot I did that, and pushed myself to go watch the sunset about 15 minutes from my house. Boy, was I surprised when I looked at my pedometer and saw 13,000+ steps!

No way it's been so long since I posted! Well, the time and date stamp here doesn't lie, though I could have sworn I wrote comments. Maybe I wrote posts and then somehow didn't post them before accidentally closing the page.

Most days have been decent eating days. I know there was at least one where I semi-binged on a whole bag of popcorn, or permasnacked most of the day, but have been reasonable and maintaining my weight. It has meant holding out at times I just really wanted to eat for the sake of eating, sometimes some really difficult hours, but it's always worth it later. I have a monthly event this afternoon where foods I tend to overdo then, or follow later with mindless eating, will be served. I skipped them last time and can't remember what the upshot was. I like the idea of being able to take or leave just about any food. I'm considering flipping a coin before I go in to decide to have any or not, and stick to the limit I set.

Finished the film class. Had a higher-than-average social week. On a friend's birthday, we went to see a broadcast of a Met opera. I won't be buying a subscription to our local opera, but it was quite engaging. It included a look at how the set was designed and operated and interviews with the singers right after they left the stage. Now that I've taken singing lessons with several teachers, I really get it when it's said that opera singers' voices are like an instrument. Actually, everyone's is. There is some luck involved, but they are also extremely accomplished "musicians." They have to memorize so much music that is rarely repetitive or rhymed, unlike pop music. It's old hat info, but still impressive. I also joined two people who were from Iran, where I lived for two+ years when I was in my early 20's, for an Iranian comedy. It was only passable as a comedy but was still fun to watch because of the picture of the silly side of the culture and for the city scenes and language. (subtitled, so I could hear the real deal.) The director was there for Q & A afterwards.

I'm feeling a bit funny that a friend I had recently reconnected with sold her house in about two days. Funny because she lived relatively near to me and we had started being able to extend easy invitations for quick meals and events. She just knew she wanted to sell and wasn't sure where she'd move, but it won't likely be close because of cost. She needed some of the money out of the house and will have to move to a different neighborhood, unless she finds a real deal. I was looking forward to having a friend pretty close by since my best friend moved to NoCal nearly three years ago. Oh, the modern life.

Drove up to TEmecula and stopping at library on the way home to print a script for my Tuesday class. Wish I didn't feel such a draw to eat when I"m not really hungry. Just have 2.5 hours before I meet a friend for Mediterrranean food. I can wait!

Been doing a ton of emailing trying to coordinate getting some friends together for a college reunion in Santa Cruz in April. And visit another friend about 45 minutes from there and get some theater tickets. Hershey Felder's next show just happens to be at a theater .8 miles from the friend I am visiting after the reunion. Another two friends who live in Berkeley were interested in the show. I got us all tickets because there were so few left. When I got done, I went back and checked and there was only one ticket left in the entire theater! Our seats are all spread out and not ideal, but heck, we'll all still get to hear him, even if we can't see him play. I had a fantastic seat the other night with a direct view of the keyboard. And free! .

Also got some batch cooking done. Used my 6 qt. Instantpot to cook two pounds of soaked pinto beans, a huge sweet potato, a whole kabocha squash, and a butternut squash, all at the same time. I set the timer for 12 minutes and it was still too long for soaked beans and the starches. It cooks so fast! All the rice I had ever tried to make in it came out mushy. Someone on another site said to cook white rice only 3 minutes. I have a pact with myself not to buy any starches or proteins (but can eat out) until I eat everything I have now. I'll experiment using the 3-minute time limit after that. I don't eat as much rice as I used to, but it would be nice to have a reliable recipe.

Got an Indian cooking class and a mammogram tomorrow.

I spent about 16 hours on the road and two days out of state over since last Friday. I got a little sick on the weekend on the trip. It didn't affected me only at night and was pretty miserable cut I was fine during the day. It did keep me eating even below moderate. Have had no rebound effect.

J, I was feeling pretty darn sorry for myself while I was nauseous, but I realize I am spoiled rotten by easy good physical health. (Mental health is more my problem.) It humbles me to remember that so many people (e.g., you) have such greater issues and are uncomfortable so much of the time. It came up in the retreat that I can sure make things seem more dramatic. (But I did feel pretty sick at times. It was a bit more than just nausea. But over now.)

Because of getting ready for the retreat, I had suspended my moratorium on staple grocery buying, but I'm back to it now. (I can still eat at restaurants.) I roasted buckwheat today and have steel cut oats soaking. Those and some sweet potatoes are the end of my cereal starches. I still have a ton of dried beans. I'd better cook more of them soon so I don't end up having only them for awhile. I am allowing myself winter squashes as veggies. I can always get freggies and stuff for coffee. It's fun to see space open up in my cabinets and freezer.

I hope you had a great time.

I have no idea still what happened to me or why, but I think little by little I am getting back to myself. Work is getting busier and busier too. I put in long days all work week and then even worked Saturday going to clients. And Sunday I did some paper work from home for about an hour. I think I am going to be really busy until after the tax deadline.

NO ONE followed the directions to have the scene memorized so I did a lot of worrying for nothing. I was still glad I’d tried hard because I did have an easier time when it was my turn even though it needed my script for backup.

I’m leaving early tomorrow morning for the retreat in Utah. I’ll be back Monday. For at least some of the time, we are asked not to use electronic devices. I doubt I’ll be checking in with Spark. Looks like it’s going to be back to our gorgeous San Diego weather. Hope everybody is in a state to enjoy it.

Good points about my trip.

A bit of a nervous wreck because I'm in a a film acting class in which the teacher said film actors have to be ready to memorize scripts quickly and often just before the shoot. He warned us he might send a script only a day or two early. I was hoping he'd give us more time for our first shoot, tonight. We got the script yesterday around noontime. It's 4 pages and he said to learn all the parts before class. One character is Einstein as a waiter and it's hard! All kinds of talk about divisors and dividends (one incorrect line) and space-time continuum, etc. He's got about 5x more lines than the other two characters. I like having a good number of lines, but I don't think I'll have it down by the, I keep learning sections and then forget them when I try them again later. Only one character is a woman., with about 4 short lines. Lopsided! I think that's interesting because I think there are only two men and about ten women in the class. I guess it's too much for me to expect that a professional writer and director could not be expected to find a short script with more parts for women, and more evenly distributed. How about a beauty parlor scene from Steel Magnolias?

Well, all I can do is what I can do.. If I'm the only one flubbing lines tonight, I might consider dropping the class, though there are other things to learn about besides the acting. but acting is my focus.

I'm determined not to let this take up all of the rest of the afternoon. The class is in Point Loma. I plan to go early and walk around the harbor area some. I did already get my Official One Minute in (from a free website that automatically logs the workout. I'm trying to get a streak going again. The exercise each day is intense and the author claims it's enough to greatly increase ability (though he doesn't promise weight loss- not my intent, either.) I'm using a target of going to a college reunion towards the end of April, though I don't want to drop the habit after that. Hoping it will just be a routine I do forever. It's only a minute! I can always do more.

Enjoy your trip while you have the money and your health. You could put off doing stuff and then not have you health to enjoy it. My parents said they were glad they did a lot of camping and traveling with us kids while we and they were young. As when they got closer to retirement age they had a lot of health issues and didn't like going on long and far trips and they just couldn't get around as easily and they had a lot of aches and pains. I am glad for the same reason. I got to see a lot of the USA that I would never have been able to afford to do as an adult. Utah is a great place with lots of stuff to see. We went through there every other year as I was growing up as we made our way back to the mid-west to visit relatives.

Enjoy your time with your friend too, no matter where you end up going to eat.

My right side is my dominate side and the one hurting me, and that is the same one they took all the blood out of. They took lots more bottles of it this time then I ever remember them taking before too.

I do think I am feeling a little better each day. But I still have sensitive skin in some areas, and muscle and joint like aches too.

My rotor cup was tight so I did pt stretches that I learned for it years ago and some new ones I found online and it is all better now. But my bicep still feels tight and feels like there is a band around it sometime when I move it. My thigh and hand are still a little stiff too.

But no more pin and needles feelings.

Had lunch at my Indian cooking class around 1:30 p.m. then just nibbles of an apple and some samples at Costco. Felt bloated and full for most of the day and into the night. Finally feel good, but can't eat little enough consistently to feel like this. Not sure why I'm whining because I'm not really willing to change much else. I'm trying no wheat or sugar (I don't eat much sugar anyway, but I love pasta and bread and on principle- not wanting to be someone who drives people crazy with what she can't/won't eat- I had never been willing to cut out such large food categories) for the month of March because wanting to eat when I'm not hungry continues to be a problem and people say these two drive that. They also claim if you give them up, after awhile you don't miss them, but it sure hasn't kicked in yet.

I found out the moderator of the retreat I'm going to is living in Vista now, so I had asked if I could carpool with her. Then I realized that she will be staying longer so she can't bring me back. She said she'd ask around to see if anyone else going will be coming back to this area at the same time I need to. The center sounds like it's in the booneys. I'd hate to get stranded there, but I"m trying to be open to not having to have it decided right now.

Because I'm taking the rental out of state, I have to pay an extra fee. This is certainly adding to the budget for this trip. I need a hotel room for one night only. This is happening a week from today. Will pick up the car next Thursday night and leave early Friday morning, back Monday night. March is usually a relatively warmish month in southern Utah but I have a feelikng it's going to be cooler this year. If I were driving my own car, I'd make it a longer trip and go visit some more of red rock country. Maybe it will be just as well if it's going to be cold, though it's easier not to get too sweaty when the weather isn't warm.

Still being a bit of a vegetable with activity. Oh, well. Am going in about an hour to help a friend who is putting her house on the market. I've recommended not to sell but she finally gently told me she wasn't looking for advice! I promised not to push it and have been supportive of the alternatives ever since. She's been divorced for years and her kids live out of state, so I offered to help with decluttering and such. I'll follow orders and then we'll get a light dinner. I'd like to try one of a few vegan/vegetarian places not far from her, but I don't know if she would find anything she likes. Let you know another day what we decided on. What I'd like most is to get the food there and take it back to her house. Most restaurants are too loud for me! but a vegan place might be quieter anyway.

That sounds rough! Sorry you're going through that. And makes me want to be more grateful for how I'm not having any problems right now and I should be getting more exercise, but I’m not doing it. And I'm not making my chats daily, either, am I? I days of been pretty laid-back and I have no excuse not to accomplish more. Well, the rain is a little bit of an excuse, but I could be doing stuff inside my house rather than worrying about not accomplishing things in the garage. I know people are tired of the rain, and I am for the reason that it's holding me back from some things, but I still enjoy hearing it. I certainly see more vegetation around the uncultivated areas of my neighborhood than I've ever seen before. I think it's too early for a trip to the desert wildflowers, though.

I eating pretty simply and mostly starches and vegetables and fruits and preparation for a retreat I'm going on next weekend. It's recommended for some of the exercises that I'm going to be doing to have prepared for it with a simple diet. I have no proof that that will help, but it's not a bad idea. Unfortunately, my car is in such a shape that my mechanic said not to drive in on such a long trip and I don't already paid for the retreat, so I'm renting a car. That's adding quite an expense, but I want to do this, so I'm spending it while I have it and while I'm still young. Ha ha.

Thanks, I had some strange issue with the nerves and or muscles on my right side this weekend. Started with pins and needle feeling in my right hand and arm that didn't want to go away. They later I noticed that my right oblique muscles that I had issues with before felt strange and the skin was super sensitive. Then the right but cheek and right thigh started feeling weird too and then got sensitive skin too. The pins and needle feeling is gone but my hand arm, side and thigh felt sore like over used muscles, hurt, maybe feel a little swollen, but are not swollen at all, no rash nothing on them. The feel heavier when using and get tired faster when using them. But anyone looking at me wouldn't see anything wrong with me. You can't see a difference, but I can feel it. But I can still do everything, feel everything, just hurts more.
Sometimes it hurts more than other times. And sometimes the sensitive thing is moving or coming and going. Had a bunch of blood work done Monday. No idea what happened or why. But I think it is slowly getting better. Sounds like I might in up in PT for it. They don't know what is wrong or what caused it and the blood test didn't give them any real cues either. The first doctor thought it was some type of neuropathy, but didnt know what cause it or why. I am wondering if it is more problems from my scoliosis, which is what put me into PT before for the oblique muscles. And again that time looking at me you wouldn't know there was an issue. But ex-rays and that showed the PT place there was an issue and a need for the PT.
So maybe that is what is going to happen again, I just don't know. I am going down a little in weight again though since I started watching more closely what I am eating since it happened. Take care

Sorry I am just seeing your msgs now! I have been really busy with work and such, even worked Saturday. But Saturday night I started having nerve issues on the right side of my body. So I probably won't be posting a lot right now, to let the nerves rest. They took a lot of blood yesterday to do several tests on me. I go my regular doctor tomorrow. Maybe I will have more answers then. All my best to you always. I will still be on the site, just not trying to type a lot right now as my right hand and arm, and right side and leg are messed up right now.
