Welcome to the team, Saranne!

You'll find a lot of support and ideas on the team and the site in general. I found the more I participated the more support and positive vibes I got. I wish you the best in your endeavors and achieving your goals.

Paul

1. Suffering is a part of life
2. Suffering is caused by our attachments and avoidances.
3. Suffering can be ended.
4. Freedom from suffering is possible by following the Eightfold path.

Bigotry disguised as morality is still bigotry just as an outhouse with
marble columns is still an outhouse.

Hi Saranne, welcome to SP and welcome to our team. You seem to be on top of sorting out your depression:-) Well done!

At the top of this page are some really good articles on Nutrition, Fitness and Motivation. They are well worth the read. My favourite tool is the Nutrition Tracker. I weigh all of my food and record it there and by doing so have been able to stay focused and keep an eye on the calories I consume. That has resulted in a just over 23kg (approx. 50lb) loss after having been overweight for about 30 years.

Just start off with baby-steps, and then when your mind/body has got used to that, then add something else to the mix.

I also have arthritis - both hips and my lower spine, plus scoliosis of the spine. As a result it makes the exercise a little more challenging. To accomodate the often sudden need to sit re pain or extra fatigue, I do the bulk of my exercising at home. I walk - not treadmill, but by putting my laundry away one at a time. I have it folded one end of the house and then walk it to (mainly) the other to put them all away. I put my groceries away using the same method. The beauty is that when the pain creeps in/up I can stop without having to walk home. I also do a 1hr Pilates class per week, and that is taken by a qualified Pilates Instructor/Physiotherpist. That way I get the exerces supervised properly, and if one is ill-advised for my condition, she gives me an alternative exercise, or a different way to do the exercise.

Given your Rheumatoid Arthritis and Stroke, make sure that you have a medical clearance before you undertake any exercises.

If you have any queries just ask - there is usually someone around so it shouldn't be too long before you get a response.

I look forward to hearing more from you. Take care,
Kris

Hi Saranne,
It is hard to see those we have loved our whole life pass away. I am hoping that the depression is lifted and that you can get on with the business of becoming the healthier you that you long for. Welcome to the team.
Hugs, Susan

Hi, My name is Saranne, and I'm glad to find this group. I've been on SP for one week, and I'm beginning to figure the site out pretty well. I'm a retired 66 year old Grandmother from Georgia, needing to lose over 50 pounds and to improve my nutrition, fitness, and general help. I have rheumatoid arthritis, have had a stroke, and have been dealing with depression since I was a teen-ager. In recent years, the depression has been well-controlled with medication (Effexor), but following my Mother's death in August, I have been in deeper depression -- not just the expected grief, but a major bout with clinical depression. My doctor is working with me to adjust my meds, and I am starting counseling next week. I think everything about SparkPeople will help me in dealing with all this. I have much to be thankful for - a great husband and family, faith, interesting people and activities in my life, and getting healthier will help me to enjoy these blessings even more. I hope I will be able to encourage others on this team, even as I get better through your help.
