The trick is to eat more fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, seeds, ect and use animal produces as a condiment (Dr. Fuhrman says this in the book called eat to live)

Hello! My name is FITNESSGRAD. I have mostly followed the Mediterranean diet my whole life. I am, however, interested in becoming a flexitarian.

Any advice on this new lifestyle would be appreciated. I cannot go completely without meat, but will significantly decrease.

Thank you! Have a wonderful day!

Hey everyone, I'm Jen, from Akron, Ohio. I'm not actually a vegetarian, I used to be for a couple years a long time ago. However, I have a 12 year old son that recently decided he wants to be a vegetarian. So we're transitioning. I don't mind making meatless dinners and eating less meat myself.

Self-control is knowing you can - but deciding you won't.

I'm Jane and I recently decided to forego meat products. That actually means meat, fish and poultry. I'm still eating dairy but would like to have the strength to remove dairy from my life as well. I'm giving myself a pass for right now as I get a few miles on without meats. I had been leaning this way for quite some time and had been eating more and more vegetarian meals, but after seeing Forks Over Knives, I decided to go for it!

My dream would be to go to a whole foods plant based diet, but I'm really struggling with dairy and sugar. My struggle is two-fold. The obvious is learning to live without these foods. The other is learning to cook good satisfying meals without cheese, eggs, sugar and flour. I am fine with whole wheat pastas etc. but there is no real substitute for white sugar.

I'm hoping to learn from this group.

On a personal note, I am 69 years old, married to Bob for 43 years this month, with grown children: two sons, one daughter, a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law, and two grands (one of each!). We live in Central Florida. I'm semi-retired and Bob still works.

Hope to get to know some of you. Jane

Hi!. I am Belinda.
I live near San Francisco, I am 57 years old.
I have 3 adult daughters (my oldest is deceased) 2 adult grandsons and one silly pug.
I lost my husband very unexpectedly 19 months ago after knee replacement surgery. he had literally just retired and I was getting ready to so we could travel. The dream of the retired. Wasn't to be.
I work part time as a preschool teacher (39 years now with little ones).
I have a strong passion for animal advocacy which is what led to my becoming a vegetarian. I try very hard to eat vegan, but I am not perfect. Cheese, sour cream and eggs still pop up in my plan occasionally.
Looking forward to getting to know folks here.
Belinda

Hi, I'm Trina. I'm a flexitarian trying to get more vegan again. Dairy gives me such nasal problems and i think more body pain. I do use Fat free half and half for my coffee. Trying to become more Ornish and Esselstyn in diet. I'm extremely broke, so the majority of my foods are starches. No fruits and some veggies, but lots of pulses and legumes. I'd love to eat more veggies right now, but just can't afford it. I make the best I can with what i got.

Looks like a great team!

Hello all..my name is Amy...
I am vegetarian working towards becoming more vegan. I just really like cheese lol ..I started with Spark people at the beginning of this month...it has been an amazing 27 days with such inspiration and support. I have dieted most of my life and have started my journey this time focusing more on how I feel and acceptance of myself rather than weight lost. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you! I hope that I can contribute and offer inspiration and assistance to the group! Have a great night!

This looks like a GREAT group--found it just now for the first time. There IS such a thing as an "economic vegetarian"; a person who does not eat meat 1) b/c it is so damned expensive and 2) knows that they can get much more nutritional bang-for-the-buck from dairy products, eggs, and beans/lentils.
Fatty cheaper meat cuts may taste good to the grease-inclined (part of why my husband weighs 400 lbs--plus he eats a lot of fatty snack foods; all of the effort I have put into making good meals w/ leaner meat gets negated) but they contribute nothing to health. I am using mostly Ornish Reversal foods due to having developed metabolic syndrome despite a 50-lb weight loss; I get plenty to eat while choosing dairy products that all have 5 mg cholesterol or less per serving (plenty of them out there) plus smaller amounts of grains, some nuts for healthy fats, and LOTS of vegetables to keep my overall carb intake under control.
Hoping to contribute some helpful ideas here.

Peace out,
Mary S.

My advice to wanting to transition to veganism is try eating more ethnic recipes. Bean burritos, enchiladas, spaghetti, curries or American type foods. My family enjoys a good burger even if it happens to be bean or veggie.

Some people will say that it is more expensive to eat vegan or vegetarian but in fact it can be cheaper and of course healthier. You will find a great many recipes and tips on this team.

Good idea using the blender. Green smoothies are an especially good way of getting in extra greens and fruits along with providing you body with antioxidants and micro nutrients that your body uses for healing.

If you are new to SparkPeople remember to make your Spark Page public so that we can interact with you. It is a little complicated but follow the directions. If you run into trouble just type a question into the search box and you will find some options.

Hello!
I am interested in becoming vegan but really don't know where to start. Don't eat a lot of meat but dairy is a big part of my diet. I use a nutribullet 3-4 times per week which I love. Look forward to getting motivated and learning from you.

Woo Hoo Jackie welcome to the team. I like to cook hot and fast for most veggies to be tender crisp. Trial and error like in most things is what it takes. Even if mine don't come out perfect I know they will get eaten at my house. If you are cooking in a skillet, let the pan get so hot you can lay your hand in it but for just a second. Then a light spray of oil or a few tablespoons of water or broth. Let that heat before adding the veggies. Cover with a lid and check on condition after a couple of minutes to see if they are to you liking.

Welcome Robin to the team. I think you will find a lot of great ideas for healthy eating. Thanks DEBEDEE for the ideas on using beans. You can also make great pasta sauces, dips, enchiladas, burritos, etc. with beans as a base.

One cup of beans a day...add them to cooked veggies, add them to whole grain pasta. I took a few large hands full of greens into a food container and dumped a rinsed can of black beans on it for lunch. Also chick peas/garbanzo beans actually smashes up and made into a nice sandwich spread mixed with vegan mayo, pickles and dill seasoning. Yummy! Serve on whoe grain bread. And there you go! Nice to see you here on this team! Welcome! emoticon

Hi! I'm Robin. I've been trying to eat a more plant-oriented diet lately just because of the health benefits. I do keep quite a bit of low fat and fat free dairy in my diet. A lot of my meals end up being somewhat vegetarian by default; meat is just a waste of time and effort for one person. I joined this group to get some good tips and recipes. My trouble has been finding those alternate protein options that aren't high in fat. Yeah, nuts and seeds are "good" fat, but they're still fat.

Hi, I'm Lynne and I would classify myself as more of a flexitarian even though I try to avoid animal products and eat mostly vegetarian and vegan meals. The reason being I have a husband who is an omnivore and pretty much a family of carnivores . Basically if there is no avoiding it like if I will either not be able to eat enough or there are no vegan/vegetarian options I will eat animal products. But I do hope to at least be able to maintain a vegetarian lifestyle and keep meat and dairy to a minimum. Like once a week at most. So glad to have found a team that will support me through this lifestyle change.

Brenda, thanks so much for joining us. I know what it's like to be depressed but just stepping out of the house for a short walk will help your mood so much. I have included a link for some short fitness videos. They are fun and not to hard but you feel great when they are done. You can stream them on your computer or TV.

As far as affordable food, read my affordable food blogs on my Spark page for some ideas. If you have any questions just give us a holler because someone will know the answer or be able to find one for you.

Hey everyone I'm Brenda. I'm working on getting fit, and not really eating better but remembering to eat at all after I do that then I'll work how good the food is. I'm 160 but I'm sure most of that is fat as i do nothing all day but hide in my room on my comp 24/7 ( but fixing that starting today. I did walk down to store today, first time in forever) I used to be a gymnastics, but ended up breaking my back in a car crash and ever since then i kind of just gave up on everything. Jan 26th was my 34 birthday and I looked at myself for the first time in a long time, its time to get the fit happy healthy me back. I joined this group because I'm vegan and have been since i was 15 science class did teach me one thing, we just moved to a new state from Texas and the only store we have cost a arm and a leg for everything but none vegan cheap tv dinners witch is not coming in this house, so i need all the tips and tricks i can get.

Hi! My name is Alice and I am trying to get healthier. I saw a response from Linda to a post and she mentioned this team. I went to her Spark page and read her "affordable" blog and I was so impressed, I knew this team was for me!
I am now a flexitarian. I am married to a carnivore but he is willing to make changes with me. I do try to do one or two vegan days a week as well as one or two vegetarian, but I don't have the tools to make a complete change.
I am really looking forward to hearing from other members and learning from everyone. There is strength in numbers.

Robin, thanks so much for introducing yourself to our team. You are right that almost any if not all diets work but "dieting" is a hard thing to do forever. Eating sensibly is the best advice. Reducing red meats not only reduces calories, fat and cholesterol in your food but also saves you money.

Good Morning.....may your week be of minimal stress and maximal enjoyment.

Sparkpeople has been a good source of support and an excellent resource for me for several years of episodic dieting. I have found that all (reasonable) diets work if one stays with them. However, I've also found that I become seriously bored with them, even after considerable success. Ultimately I wind up in the same place. This time it's different because when I resumed SP with only the prospect of limiting calories, I had just been discussing with a post-vegetarian friend that I have tried vegetarianism several times and each time become anemic. While figuring out a healthy approach to calorie counting, I decided that perhaps vegetarian was not a rigid concept....that it wasn't all or nothing....and that perhaps I could take an effective and satisfying semi-vegetarian approach and thus found myself in "Flexitarian" country.
Semi-vegetarian appears to be a different concept for all of us. Mine is simply to eliminate all beef, pork, and lamb and limit the amount of chicken, turkey, and fish that I consume--this averages out to about 12 ounces of meat weekly. Milk, cheese, and eggs are included but not in large quantities and most meals are primarily vegetables. Love eating this way, have increased energy, and am enjoying the cooking. Weight loss is slow (even limiting calories) but that's fine. At 73 I'm not in any hurry!
I would enjoy participating in this group....comradery, mutual support, and sharing information always make the journey easier and more interesting.
You are welcome to check out my spark page if you would like more information.
Have a warm and joyous Thanksgiving.
Robin

Hi Rob, welcome to the team. There are ways to save money and eat healthy eating meat. I tend to lean on tips on vegetables because I recently went vegan but my family still loves their meat and cheese on occasion. Soon I will post something for all you meat-lovers. Many of my ideas can easily be adapted to adding meat. Chili, fried-rice, spaghetti, etc.

Hello, everyone! I'm LaineyBug and I just joined Spark People on Monday. I joined this group today. I was so pleased to be invited by the group leader and a fellow member.
I'm 33 years old and I have 2 daughters ages 7 and 8 and 3 kitty cats. I've been an animal lover all of my life and I started out eating vegetarian because of my love for animals.
Then, I discovered how much healthier it is for me to be able to cut out as many animal products as I can and eat a variety of plants instead. I have found that when I eat this way that my diabetes can be more easily managed and with fewer medications.
Sometimes, I fall off the wagon, but I've found that I should not beat myself up over it and simply make a different choice next time. I used to think if I messed up once, I should throw in the towel. But, I do take a dialectical behavior therapy class at my mental health facility and one of our skills is to be mindfully non-judgmental and be able to fully participate in daily life. So, I'm trying to apply that even to my healthier lifestyle.
I have completely filled out my profile and I hope that it helps all of ya'll to get to know me. But, if ya'll do have any questions or comments, then feel free to message me or ask.
So, again, thank you for inviting me. I hope to meet and make new friends here and have fun while getting healthy.

Hi I am Tami from Maine. I have been a vegetarian for 20 years and have only been Vegan for 2 years. I became vegan because I read "Eat to Live" and I lost 100 pounds because of the change. I was a vegan who struggled with a carnivore family. I just adjusted the meals I was making for the family so they would be Vegan for me ( Shepard's Pie - Hamburger for them and veggie crumbles for me) . I also incorporated a Meatless Monday so everyone was Vegan one day of the week. Now we all eat vegan. : ) I have gained 30 pounds back because a lot of Vegan desserts and snacks are full of Sugar and I did not exercise except for shoving snow this winter. So now I am a Vegan who is watching my Sugar intake and goes to the gym. I have lost 7 pounds in 1 1/2 Months. Working on getting back into my Skinny jeans. I want to be a Sexy Grandmother. :)

Hello, my name is Dana and I have been with Spark off and on since 2006. More off than on some of those years. I recently went MIA for a couple of months. But now I am back and ready to refocus and get on track. It's been a rough 3 or 4 months for me. My goal is to lose 70lbs by my 36th bday which is January 26th. I use to be a Flexitarian a few years back and it really helped me a lot. I am transitioning back into that lifestyle. Thank you for the invite to this group. I look forward to getting to know everyone and being a part of your journey. :-)

Hello, and thank you for inviting me to the team!
I'm vegetarian, struggling to be vegan. I have issues with cheese and ice cream. emoticon
The biggest thing I struggle with is planning healthy meals and finding time to cook them. And my hubby and daughter are both carnivores, so I feel like I'm always cooking two meals at a time.
Looking forward to learning and growing with you all!

Hello thank you for the invite. I have been on Sparkpeople since 2009 and for various life situations I have lost and gained many pounds.

I started doing Eat to Live (part time when it was convenient to do so) about 4-5 years ago
I got serious again this year and have been losing steadily, in April I had my mammogram and didn't get good news, so I dove in to eating only whole natural foods and making sure I had my "gbombs" (as Dr Fuhrman calls them) everyday and using the elliptical everyday trying to get as healthy as possible before my surgery. I had bilateral mastectomies on 5/13/15. As soon as I am able I will be back on that elliptical to get as fit as possible and lose as much weight as possible before reconstructive surgery. It sounds like a horrible situation but seems like the "kick in the pants" that I needed to get serious about my health and my life.

My husband is vegan about 2 years now, he is also type 2 diabetic after his heart surgery (he was born with whole in the heart).

For years I tried to lose weight alone and I can tell you from experience it is so much easier and more sustainable when your spouse is on board with you.

We both like to experiment with new recipes and new vegetables that we have never had. We have found some wonderful new flavors and some super easy go to recipes.

I will tell you that I am not on the internet often but I welcome all questions and I will answer as soon as I can.

I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Pam

Hello everyone! Thank you for the invite.I live in New Brunswick, Canada. We grow our own non GMO veggies. I freeze them or can them so that we don't have to buy from the stores. I guess we would be flexitarians. We don't eat red meat(except for DH and he does love bacon). We do eat chicken and turkey on special occasions. We love our fish. DH was a commercial fisherman so that has always been a mainstay for us. We both have lactose problems so dairy is a no-no except for hard cheese. Just trying to learn more healthy vegetable dishes that I can add protein into them. DH will not eat beans so those are out of the menu! emoticon

Hello everyone! I am Amy, from New Jersey. I am a flexitarian - DH and I were trying to eat vegetarian during the week and only consume meat on the weekends, but we found it hard to find enough vegetarian dinners to keep life interesting. Now we mostly try to limit eating red meat, but I try to stick with vegetarian breakfasts and lunches. I am also trying to limit my soy consumption, but man that stuff is in EVERYTHING!!!! I am also mildly lactose intolerant, but that doesn't stop me from loving ice cream. emoticon

Hi! Thanks for this new board! Maybe I'll finally figure out what I'm supposed to be doing. :)

I'm BaybNJoe, otherwise known as KT. I live in Ontario, California with my husband, two kids and two cats. I am an elementary school teacher on the edge of summer vacation. It'll be nice to sleep in for a while.

I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome with Insulin Resistance. My A1C, the 3-month average blood sugar percentage is 6.1, down from 6.4 (scary high for a non-diabetic). I'm at a healthy weight, but I have about 10 pounds of visceral fat to lose--all in the tummy and thighs. I MUST not allow my condition to progress into Diabetes. Now that I have lowered my percentage by this much, I must lower it to below 5.7. I see my endocrinologist again in November. I hope to meet my goal by then.

I've been cutting out meat little by little, but milk is my love. I've even cut out cheese, now that I know what it does to my lipids. My biggest vice is sugar. I LOVE candy and ice cream! I'm trying to cut it back, but I must admit that I'm addicted to sugar. I've been wanting to check out a plant based, whole foods diet, but I'm afraid that by cutting out animal based foods, I'll not be able to replace the protein with the correct plant based alternatives. I tried it once a few years ago and by week 3, I was pretty sick and malnourished. I did it wrong that time.

Let's see how I do here. :) Thank you for the invite! :)

Thanks for the invite, Ive been trying out a whole food plant-based diet since January 2015 when a doctor recommended it as a way to improve my total health (lose weight, lower blood pressure, lessen inflammation from arthritis, gain energy, etc.), and I do feel better. I was sceptical at first as I didn't think I could give up dairy products, but it really hasn't been too hard. This lifestyle change fed right into my love for cooking new, different, delicious meals. It's challenging at times, but I like this type of challenge, and my family is surprised at how good I can make vegetables taste!

thank you for the invite - we've been plant-based vegans for 7 years now, though DH takes advantage of restaurant meals to eat meat (while i like to see how vegans are fed away from home), and we do have fish a couple of times a month. also live in deer hunting country, but restaurants are finally offering the occasional vegetarian or even vegan meal.

we've been traveling for a few weeks now, so it's been harder to stick to the plan, but will return to our own kitchen in a few days and i'm looking forward to getting back on track.

CJM, my husband was vegetarian for years and I was a meat-eater.....I made vegetarian measl, but added meat whenever I wanted it...usually I wound up eating vegetarian at home, but when we went out I often ate meat.....fix a vegan meal for both of you at home and let him throw some cheese on his baked potato if he wants.....as long as you don't make it a big deal, he is less likely to fuss about vegan meals....remember, you are dealing with a MAN emoticon
