Hi! I am new here! I just got into an argument about carb intake with someone on the Diabetic Team, and thought perhaps I would feel welcomed here with my diet approach. Yes, I do have the book, and I could even have Dr. Davis as a Dr. if I wanted to. I just might, but I am taking his recommendations to avoid that.

I also follow Precision Nutrition program by Dr John Berardi.

Welcome Alaskabred,
feel free to check out the team and ask all your questions if you can't find answers in the various threads.
I also highly recommend listening to this videopodcast which has most of the info from the book for free. It will explain, among other things, why wheat in moderation does not work and what to do instead. Just scroll down to get to the first video:

The rest of this website is full of amazing info and great interviews, too. My favorite resource for low-carb living. emoticon

Cheers,
Birgit

emoticon Take the time to explore the team, and I suggest that you go to the web site and also get the book from your local library. Like you I eat very little bread but like my sweets, however, wheat is in everything - from gravies, snack bars, candies, you name it, lip balm. I hope you find what you are looking for. I have the cook book and did the almond chicken , it was ok, but I will add spices to it next time.

I am new to this team and I joined because I wanted to learn more about it. I am on the South Beach Diet because I wanted a heart healthy plan first and to lose weight second, I am intrigued by what I have read here because the South Beach Phase 1 is like this plan but is slowly I corporates "good" wheat back in. However, once I start adding in the whole wheat products my weight loss has stalled. I watched The Dr. Oz segment about the Wheat Belly Diet after reading a couple of comments on here and am now considering limiting wheat in my diet even more. It makes sense to me. I am not a big bread person but like my sweets and that has been hard recently but I make do with real dark chocolate. So, on this life quest to a healthier me, I want to find an eating plan that I can carry on with me as a way of life, something that is doable, yet can be satisfying in its own way. I will be looking into the Wheat Belly Plan as I go along. Thanks for letting me ride along while testing the waters.

emoticon to the team, my suggestion is that you pick a start date and then prepare for this event. While you are preparing you can do more research at the site that Brigit suggested and that will give you a better idea of what to expect.

Coming here and reading other peoples experiences will help too. I know I could not start right away and had to use up a few things too but I dont' think I ate that much wheat to begin with at least until I started reading that wheat is in EVERYTHING non food as well !

Wishing you lots of sucess with this, you are worth the effort !! emoticon emoticon

Welcome, there is a significant chance that all your problems are wheat-related, or maybe grain or gluten related.
Make sure you do some reading on the wheatbelly blog and you can find a lot of the info from the book for free. Many people eliminate their worst symptoms after only a week.
Best wishes,
Birgit

Hello - new to the team and have not read the book yet. But after years of struggling with weight (despite how much I enjoy running) because of binge eating problems... and related anxiety that causes lack of focus at work... not to mention continuing problems with acne as an adult and rosacea - I wonder. Could it be this simple? So I'm willing to try it out.

The problem at the moment is a house full of whole wheat products. I will probably continue to eat wheat for now but will avoid purchasing additional wheat while I read up on some of the forum threads and pick up a copy of the book.

Hello, I am Lindie, I am just entering into a wheat/gluten free world and am having fun trying to figure out foods and what not. I am looking forward to a life long time of good living results because of this. One thing I do not expect is to see results right away as it does take time for the body to adjust to change, any change and can sometimes be rebellious about that change, anyway that is how I view it.

I'll make myself at home on the threads and see if there is a recipe thread as well to share, not all of us can afford the cookbook right now. I am actually reading the book on my Iphone!

Welcome to the team. I hope you'll get answers to most of your questions as you look around on this team. If not just ask. It is very common for people to feel uncomfortable with eating a lot of fat but I can guarantee that it works. You might also benefit from joining the low-carb team on Spark as well. Most people should not restrict calories at all, only carbs, and even those you don't need to count. I just leave all sugar, grains and beans out of my diet and eat lots of veggies, meats and eggs and, until recently, dairy. emoticon

Cheers,
Birgit

Hi Fellow Wheat Belly-ers! My name is Cimmi and I just discovered Wheat Belly 2 weeks ago. I read the book and cookbook and it blew my mind so I decided to give it a try. Been following the plan for a week now. I had lost 9 lbs before I started and only lost 1 since starting WB, but I think I may not be eating enough. I am exercising 6-9 hours a week and I am still having trouble with what I like to call my "Full Fat Phobia." After so many years of trying to lose weight using the old "whole grains, low/no fat" way (which I could lose weight on if I white-knuckled it and just ignored the constant hunger pangs and of course I always gained it all back) it is difficult to convince myself that it is okay to eat FAT! I found SparkPeople because I wanted a place to log my calories to make sure I was eating enough. Well guess I've rambled on enough for my first post. I hope to find even more support here (I "like" Wheat Belly on Facebook and that is a great page to get questions answered and find support) as I need all the help I can get!!

Hi Lissajean,
you might want to look around and join some of the other very active low-carb/paleo teams on spark as well. There is now a wheatbelly cookbook out also. After you've done some reading on this team let us know if you have any questions. I understand that it's harder if you have family members eating pizza. Sometimes it helps to ask them to keep their unhealthy stuff out of the kitchen. Also, stock up on really good foods for your kitchen cabinets and fridge. emoticon

Hi! It's been a long long time (like 2 years or more) since I even visited sparkpeople. But through a link in an email, I came across some of your comments regarding PALEO bread, by Jullian bakery. Then I saw that Sparkpeople had a Wheatbelly group so I decided to rejoin. I have been trying to go wheat-free since I read Dr. Davis's book last summer. not much luck as I have 2 sons that live with me who keep bringing home pizza's ect... It's really hard to go without the fast food in a real urban setting. Lots of 'get it fast and cheap' types of lunches. I bought some almond flour and made some almond pancakes. I'm going to try for a good almond bread recipe, does anyone have one? The paleo bread by Julian Bakery is tooo expensive! I like Elana Amsterdams recipes, and website has many recipes.
I hope I stick with it this time. Your newbie friend Lissajean

Hi Kim,
glad you are joining us and hope you will get quick results with low-carb. I've found that wheat and sugar (other than small amounts from berries) as well as sugar substitutes need to go for carb cravings to stay away completely. Those things are just as addictive as cigarettes or cocaine.
I assume you are type 2? Make sure you check your sugar levels more than normal because everyone is different in how long it takes for things to improve, it could be days or weeks or even longer if you have other food sensitivities. I just found out that I need to avoid dairy as well. Best wishes for your journey to health and keep us posted on how you are doing. emoticon

Thanks for the info about the wheat belly blog. I am new to this team and just went over there, I did a search under the diabetes category and found an entry from last fall. It was about someone who got off wheat and at day 2 already they are off their diabetes meds and blood sugars are normal. I'm on alot of that medication. The generic isn't so bad, but the byetta injections are not cheap. This year my insurance has a 400 dollar deductible, the first month this year I had to pay full price for my byetta pen, which was about 340 dollars. So this month I will have to pay the rest of the deductible, 60 dollars PLUS the copay which will be 100 bucks. Going off wheat and grains might be hard at first but so worth it if I'm not going to have to pay an arm and a leg for medications. I've had good luck in the past doing low carb diets, I just need to stick with it this time and not go back to old habits. I'm actually not a big fan of whole grains anyway, it's these low carb tortillas that I have used for sandwiches that are going to be the hardest to give up.

Hi BUMPS!! It is a good book. Changed my life. For the better. I now have a normal digestive system. I have never known what normal felt like.

The book is so good, that I ordered it for my son, he will get it today. I told him to at least read it three times. That'll get him going.

Has anyone found that eating fruit like 1/2 of a bananna with sour cream or 1/2 bananna with cottage cheese to hurt their carb free diet? Thanks

Hi! I am Sharon and new to this team. I have not actually bought the book yet but I know the bad effects Wheat can have. I was actually told back in the 90's that I have a Wheat Allergy. I plan to get the book and also am anxious to learn as much as possible. I have been trying to be very careful with alternatives, especially with the news of GMO's which can also be found in Gluten Free Products.

Thank You!

Dear Lasergal50,
I read your blog regarding the purchase of coconut, almond & flaxseed flour. Are these gluten free also? Are they more calories than whole wheat flour or regular? I know I just started this year giving up wheat and sugar. I cannot say it is easy but I have to say I feel better but find myself weakening sometimes and need to have something all the time so I don't go for the wheat and sugar products in the house that my husband eats.

I know there is a great site Lighter Side that has low carb recipes that you might enjoy.
Do you have any recipes for coconut, almond or flaxseed flour?

Thanks for sharing.

Hi everyone. Birgit, reading your daughter's blog got me interested in joining your team. Right now, I'm just reading everything. I hate to cook and would rather be outside or in my barn than in my kitchen. I just want to feel better and have more energy. Dropping about 10 lbs would be a plus but my main goal is to feel better. I have osteoporosis in my lower back and hips and have a great deal of pain everyday just trying to get around. I'm convinced that I would be able to handle the pain if I just had a bit more energy and felt better. Ok, enough with the complaining. Back to my reading. Thanks everyone!

When I started my healthy lifestyle, I had cut out a lot of wheat from my diet. I rarely ate bread or pasta and had stopped eating popcorn. I was doing very well.

I just recently started to eat breakfast which consisted of bran cereal and fruit. I also started eating popcorn as a snack. I've noticed that I seem to be packing on the pounds for no apparent reason..

I decide to go back to my old ways of avoiding grains. I have not read the book yet.

Great to have you, Lasergal! We all have different takes on the cooking part.
For me I replace all flour in recipes with nut flours or coconut flour, I eat a very high-fat and low-carb diet and love it because I don't have to count calories nor do I ever get very hungry.
Please share with us what you learn as you go.

Hi, I'm new. I just bought the book and have been trying to follow it. So far I have lost 2 lbs. following there meal suggestions. I thought I'd join to see what you cook day to day. Hope to succeed with your help. I'm retired so I now have time to really work at this. I also love to cook so I'm up to trying unusual dishes.

Welcome to the group! We are on the cutting edge of good health, if I might say so. emoticon

I just dumped dairy. We'll see how THAT goes. For breakfast I had bullet-proof coffee w/ coconut oil, a greens drink (celery, cucumber, apple, kale and parsley) and a soft-boiled pastured egg from a local hen. I am making homemade almond milk today, and 'activated almonds' (I'm using mixed nuts) from the Food Matters 3 Day Detox Plan.

Happy new year everyone!

So glad to have found this group, as I think it fits my perspective very well.

I have gluten sensitivity, which causes me headaches and fatigue. I have been trying to eat a gluten free diet for the past 9 months or so, but I keep felling off the wagon due to social pressure from family (especially during the holidays). I live alone, which allows me to manage my diet quite well at home, and I can prepare acceptable lunches to take to work, but whenever I visit my family, I feel obliged to eat what they are having, often to my detriment.

I do not eat any grains on a regular basis, though I will occasionally have rice if I am badly craving starch (every few months). I occasionally eat potatoes and sweet potatoes, about once/month. I do not use refined sugar, but will sometimes add a bit of honey or maple syrup to things for flavor and sweetness.

I eat a relatively low carb diet, generally between 65-100g/day, coming mostly from vegetables and fruit. I aim for a nutrient ratio of 50% fat, 25% protein and 25% carbs. My usual diet includes eggs, butter, olive oil, full fat Greek yogurt, cheese, most vegetables (especially crucifers!), blueberries, bananas, citrus, nuts, chicken, pork, beef and fish. I am sensitive to most berries, and allergic to shellfish.

I haven't had a chance to read the Wheat Belly book yet, but I have heard of it and now am motivated to read it myself.

Everything about you resonates happiness, now I won't settle for less.
Give me all the peace and joy in your mind.
Muse- Bliss

Welcome! I do think your life just got a lot easier, at least in the long run. The first couple of days without wheat and on fewer carbs can be a little tough sometimes but I hope you will see the benefits very soon. emoticon
Cheers,
Birgit

Hi Vicki B,
I'm an old spark who "fell off the wagon" and I've now returned with the promise of Wheat Belly. I am new to this forum.

Thank you for posting your nutritional info Vicki B. I wasn't sure where to start with carbs. I know that Dr. Davis doesn't "count" carbs but I am still trying to track my food intake. I've got a whole lot of weight to lose. It helps to know what others are doing.
Blessings...

Hi,
I'm Vicki and I have 65 lbs to lose. Back in the 80's I lost 105 lbs and kept it off for over 18 years. It wasn't until I took on my husbands eating habits that I gained back all I'd lost plus more. So starting Jan. 1-2013 I'll be going back on a very low carb way of eating, to get back a more healthy body, and have a lot more energy.
