Hello!

I started "running" three years ago, but suffered from compartment syndrome in my right calf due to a previous skiing injury, so didn't get very far very quickly! I had an operation on my leg two years ago, tried running again, but my leg is still bad. I plodded along at 13 minute miles - a pace at which my leg didn't complain much. But you can't plod all your life! I want to be a runner. Hence - I'm here. My goal is to complete the programme running properly - i.e. 10 minute miles or below. It will be challenging, and it will hurt, but I will give it 100%.

I've been jogging and walking on the treadmill for some months now but I've been taking it easy on myself this last month because I tended to quit before when things got too rough. I've decided to step things up again now that I've got a more solid pattern of exercise down. Some of my cousins have been running races and marathons for years now and we're a pretty competitive family so when another of them jumped on the bandwagon last year I started thinking about doing it myself. Well, she just finished another 5k and my husband acted like I couldn't do it because I'm overweight and have always been overweight. That ticked me off that my overweight cousin could do it but he thought I wouldn't be able to go through with it so I signed up for my first 5k race. Even if I end up crawling to the finish line I WILL finish! However, I don't plan on crawling unless injure myself. My plan is to run as much as possible. Running the whole way seems a bit out there for me right now but perhaps by the end of this training it won't seem so absurd to me.

Good luck to everyone! Let's do it!

Hello Racers! I started walking in early March, jogging in late March, and can now in August run 22-25 minutes at a time. As a newbie at age 48, my first goal is to run for 30 minutes so I'm slowly getting there. My second goal is to run a 5K in the Fall. So I signed up for my very first race in early October. My race goal is to finish the course, whether win, place, show, or last. Ideally, running the entire 3.1 miles would be an awesome accomplishment my first time out, but I'm probably a bit far away from that lofty sub-goal at this point in time. No worries, just finishing is more than enough.

I've hit a plateau at this 22-25 minute mark, and after some reading I think interval training is the key I need to get over the wall. The SparkPeople 5K training schedule offers a great interval program for my needs. Thanks SP!

To anyone out there reading this, good luck and great racing!

Hey Everyone! I am new to the team and excited to get my run on! :) I will be competing in my first triathalon in October and it ends with a 5k run. I'm already jogging about 1.5 miles 3 to 4 days a week and am mixing in swimming and biking. Hopefully this new training plan will get me all set for my run portion!

Hi everyone!! I'm pretty new to Spark People and so far I love it!!! I'm all about fitness and healthy eating and I know this will help me keep on track :)
I ran a half marathon in May 2009 and hit my goal time!! However, it took a toll on my body as I wasn't a runner and I know that I didn't allow myself the proper training time. So I gave up running for awhile and now I know I need to get back into it...but slowly and the right way. I'm hoping this will help me to reach a small goal and then bigger goals!!! I would love to be able to run a 5K in under 30 mins. There is one in my area in October and I did it last year and had a hard time...this year I want to ROCK IT!!!
I will start the program today :)

Just Push PLAY!!!

Krissie

Tim- keep it up, you will see changes. I keep getting frustrated about not seeing immediate results. I have to keep reminding myself of how long it took to get out of shape and also reminding myself that sometimes building muscle will affect the scale.
I am just starting the 5k your way program too. I need to change up my workouts to hope to jump past a plateau. Most of my family enjoys running, so I am hoping this will be something we can all do together.

Hi I'm Tim, started the 5K this week, looking for an alternate workout program, that will burn more calories, Which I'm doing, however I looking for results too quickly and trying to encourage myself to keep it up. I did my walk/jog program today, as well as lifted some weights. Got on the scale and was disappointed even though I burned more calories and ate less food today. Need some guidance.

Hi my name is Dawn

I might take a bit longer than 5 weeks because I've been recovering from an ankle injury (I broke it 8 months ago, now I'm FINALLY able to run). I want to make sure I don't re-injure it so I'm trying to be careful. I used to run in the past so I'm not a complete beginner.

But... I'm going for it! :)

Hi everyone!

My name is Lauren and I'm from Ontario, Canada. I just started the 5k Your Way Running Program today! I have been casually running/jogging for a little while but I'd really like to ramp things up and actually run a 5k! Today I started the walking for 1 minute / running for 3 minutes and it was an intense workout but I completed it. I ran at the gym on a treadmill with the incline on 1.0. I'd like to try to run outside as well, but I find it to be so much easier doing the intervals on a treadmill. Plus, it is incredibly hot outside and nicer to run indoors while watching TV.

I'd love to keep going with this and hope to reach my goal of running a 5k!

Greetings!

In March I started walking again, and this past month, I've felt like running. You know? When your feet want to go faster than what you're currently doing. So I decided to go with it!

This week I signed up for a 5k in my town on September 10, and I started looking for a 5k training program. I love that there is one right here on SparkPeople! I needed a running goal so that I could actually track my progress and work towards something. Honestly, I need goals to get anywhere.

Being able to do this means a lot to me. I was inspired by my brother and his friend who ran their first 5k's this spring after being 1st and 2nd place in the Biggest Loser challenge they had at work last summer/fall. I am so proud of them for their weightloss and their commitment to fitness. If they could do it, I could too! I've had much less weight to lose compared to them, but being so sedentary with an office job, I needed to get exercise back into my lifestyle before the weight kept creeping up.

I'm not sure I've ever run anything more than 2 miles, and that was in high school (btw, my 20 year reunion is in a few weeks). But I am so looking forward to a new accomplishment and being able to say I've reached a new level of fitness!

Peace,
'Dippy

Hello Team!

I have been a member of Spark for several years, but I have been inactive for the last two years or so. I'm trying to get back into the groove of a healthy lifestyle, and I'm hoping this team can help give me the motivation I need to keep trying and keep focus on my goals.

Let me introduce myself:

I'm 33, and I am not overweight. My weight is "healthy." But *I* am not as healthy as I want to be. I would like to lose about 5 pounds (10 would be better), and replace the jiggly parts with muscle. I want to be healthy, not just the right size. I want to have more energy, be strong, and live well.

Last month I married my soulmate. I do not have children of my own - but I have a 7 year old stepson and 6 fabulous furbabies (4 cats, 2 dogs).

I want to get into hiking with the dogs. This would be so good for the all of us (including the hubby).
emoticon emoticon
I want to start cooking healthy meals at home.
emoticon emoticon
I want to utilize the awesome gym like we should.
emoticon emoticon
And I want to have more energy so I can really feel and enjoy this life that I've built!
emoticon emoticon

I have been toying with the idea of turning my morning walks into morning jogs - I know my dogs would LOVE this. I can't tell you how thrilled I am to find this team. Just what I needed for the additional guidence and motivation!

I look forward to being an active member of this team!

Just joining the team. I did my first 5K early in the month after following a combination of the 5K Your Way and Couch to 5K plans. I'm new to running. My daughter talked me into doing the 5K. Now I want to keep it up. I swim 4-5 days a week and run/elliptical 2-3 days a week.

Hello team! My name is Sandy and I joined today and plan to do the first training day tomorrow. I've walk some here in there and I was never a consistent walker. This will be my first 5K as I never done one before.
I haven't seen a weight loss for quite sometime now and I'm hoping that walking can help and I have been exercising and eat healthy. Right now I am a plateau and need to try something new.
I look forward to doing the program and working doing a 5K then working my way up high.

Hi - middle age has been creeping up on me for too long. It's time to fight back and get in shape. I had always promised myself that I would compete in the Senior Olympics one day - well, like any journey, there's a first step. This is the beginning of my journey.

101walker - you will not get the cardio benefits of running by walking (but walking is still very good for you) If you have problems with knees, etc., walking may actually be better for you. check with your doctor if you have real concerns

Hi everyone! I've been running off and on for the last few years, but there's been a lot of change going on in my life lately (good change!) so running has been on the back burner for a while. I joined this team to get back on track and stick to a goal! I want to be able to run a 5k again, and build up from there. About a year ago I ran my first half-marathon, and I would love to be able to do that again.

Good luck to everyone!

Hello! I am gearing up for my summer exercise program and am happy to find this team. I am confused by the terminology. I used to think that that there was walking, jogging (sort of an intermediary pace) and running. Nowadays, jogging and running appear to mean the same thing-even here at SP (see the cardio menu). Are jogging and running the same thing? Anyway, I don't move at a pace that comes anywhere near the teens, but my heart rate is good. So, I wonder, is it worth the extra impact to get the HR going, or should I just stick to walking. I can do my "jog" for well over a mile, and then interval walk/jog for another 2 miles. Anyway, glad to read all of your introductions. Let's get going!

Hi I am Sandra and I just finished the 5K Your Way Walk/Jog program. After I finished that program I wanted to take it to the next level and train to run the whole way for a 5K so I can run a 5K with my husband. I am really psyched about the program and can't wait to sign up for a race.

My name is Kristine and I am trying to get back into a more active lifestyle. I started using Podrunner intervals and just finished week 2. I need to lose 60 lbs so hopefully this will help.
I have been reading that intervals are the way to go to help lose weight. My ultimate goal is to run some marathons. I have run a couple of 1/2 marathons. Keep your fingers crossed. emoticon

Hi everyone!

I'm a 20 year old college student who is just starting to get into running (due to some very motivating friends haha).

My first 5K is July 17th, the GE 5K Petit Family Foundation Race. The Petit's, especially Hayley and Michaela, were friends of mine that were taken away far too soon, and so I figured that this first run should mean something extra special.

Today was my second 1.5 mile run, wahoo! I'm hoping that the mid-90s heat and sun in Michigan will lay off so I don't get too sunburned!

Hi,
My name is Amy. My husband just ran his first marathon and I've decided I want to try running too (but I'm going to start a little smaller with a 5k on July 10.) I found this program at just the right time. Today will be my first run.

Hello,

My name is Derek and I joined this team because I am hoping to run my first 5K later this summer. I feel that this plan will keep me motivated and will push me to reach my goal. I look forward to the 5 week journey and coming out on top with a good 5K time at the end. If I am unable to find a real 5K I plan on joining the Virtual Races that SparkPeople has to offer.

I just quit smoking 2 months ago, and decided last week that I should put my lungs to good use again. I used to run, long ago as a smoker, but never really tried to push myself further than my usual slow 3 mile run around the lake. I would like to get back into the groove of running a few times per week, and first short term goal for the summer is to run my first 5K on July 9th! I have 5 weeks to get my body back into running mode. I added the spark app to my phone, so I am trying to be accountable for not only what enters my mouth, but how much I actually try to use my body :).

If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal. Not to people or things.

Hi! I'm Susie. I was doing the C25K program but finding it too slow for me. I just felt that since I can already run 1-1.5 miles without stopping that I needed to try a different plan. I am hoping this is the right plan for me. I am currently training for an Adventure race in July, hoping to find a 5k or two to do in between.

I've been running for a few years but over the past few months life, graduate school, parenting, and my job pushed my running goals to the background. I was so proud of my ability to run a 5K! Decided to join this program to work myself back into it. I did an 8K in Vancouver BC a few weeks ago (hubby was running the marathon) and didn't train enough- ended up pullling a hamstring muscle on one leg and a quad muscle on the other. I really do love to run and feel like I need to just backup and return to a structured program that will help me rebuild my endurance, increase my speed, and get into a structured training routine. Hoping this program will be the ticket, Will start day 1 tomorrow!

Hi
My name is Melissa and I am excited to start this training program and get on with my first 5K run. I already walk/jog about 7K per day so now I am looking to jog the 5K within the 40 minute mark (for starters). Here we go!

Just finished the 5k walk/run program so I am just back from my 5k and I feel great! Never thought I would like running. I started this because I don,t go to the gym and the land is flat around here. I wanted to be able to do some cardio on foot. Now I am starting to look forward to the trainings...

I have never run in my life so this has been a challenging path for me. But my distance and time keep improving little by little and I am looking for my first 5K to sign up for.

Hi~
I've been walking for several weeks now & am going to send in the paperwork for my first 5K tomorrow.
Hoping this program will help me get into the right rhythm for running & improve my times. I can walk/jog 4 miles on the treadmill in 55 minutes currently, but really want to be faster to be competitive.
Good luck to everyone :)

I just decided to sign up for this challenge and I couldn't be more excited.
I'm not a runner at all, and I've always been intimidated to try it, but I feel like this is something I can handle. I'm excited for my first run tomorrow! Any advice?

Just joined this Running Program!

My best friend and I are "running" (stumbling/crawling/walking/jogging) a 5K on Monday (16th) to see where our times are and we're going to train all summer and see how we improved on August 6th (A 5K Race in our Community)! I'm pretty pumped!

I was a 3 sport varsity athlete in HS, now a Jr. in College (and 30 lbs heavier), and I really want to get back into killer shape; so I'm using the 5K running plan in combination with some home fitness videos to really beat my butt into shape this summer. My best friend and I started a round of P90X in February and I lost 15lbs and crazy inches, so now it's time for even better cardiovascular health!

Looking foward :)
