Boling5, I see a lot of similarities between our families! Welcome to the team, I only got started yesterday but my kids were very receptive to the actions we are planning on taking. I look forward to meeting other families like mine to share ideas and stories with! emoticon

Hello to all! We are a family of 5 in sw michigan.. I have 3 wonderful boys 8,9(almost 10) and 15. I have been trying to get my family to be healthier for about 5 years! it seems as though they hop on and hop off. i know i am very much an enabler to them since i am the one that does the grocery shopping and cooking so i need to get that under control. my oldest son is healthy. he likes to eat the same things as i do. loves veggies/fruit. doesn't like fatty meats or fast food.. my middle son could not be any more opposite! he would eat bacon cheeseburgers with french fries every meal every day. he does not like veggies and limited fruit. he LOVES bread and candy.. need i say more? then my youngest, he is right in the middle. going through a picky stage right now but not much of a candy/junk eater. they are involved in seasonal sports but love the tele and their video games. my dh... he works A LOT and i pack his breakfast/lunch. i do give him healthy stuff but i don't know if he gets things at work thru the vending machines or others always bringing in goodies to share. he is not much of an exerciser. he goes in spurts.. will be really into it for a while and then burns out and returns to the recliner with his video games, late night snacks.

oh dear, i have just gone on and on.. i am hoping to find some help here!

Hey we are the KY Family, I am a member of sparkpeople and my personal program is to lose weight. My husband also wants to lose weight but does not feel he can find success with an online program. My boys ages 7 and 10 are healthy active kids with a Screen addiction I am hoping to break. I really want my kids to become more family involved before they hit middle and high school and feel the need to assert independence. I want that strong tie to us for them to lean on when making difficult decisions regarding sex, drugs and peer pressure. What better way than to develop healthy habits while increasing our bond.

This is a great idea and I look forward to the next 4 weeks!

My name is Danika and I am a single mother of one. I work in the nursing field and I'm also caregiver to my mother. We all were recently in a bad car accident and it's made all of us re-evaluate where we are and where we want to be. My son is almost 10, but looks like he's 12 or 13. He's about 20lbs over-weight. He takes after me in that he LOVES sweets and unhealthy snacks. I am about 75lbs over-weight. Anyway, we are both ready to make the change and eat better and get exercise regularly...and as a family. We've already made a change to Splenda from sugar since my mom is diabetic. Now, we just need to eat fruit as dessert and get more active. We're gonna do this!

Live for today, dance like no one's watching, sing like no one can hear, and love like you've never been hurt. You only have one life...so get up and enjoy it!!!

Hello all - joining this challenge today. We're empty nesters now so it's just DH and me here at home now. I know a lot of this challenge may be geared towards families with children; but, I'm hoping I can apply it still. I'm hoping this will help me focus on more healthy choices for us and help move my hubby a little further along on his fitness improvement journey, which he does not yet know he is taking. LOL

Stacy- If you put it on your kids plate, eventually they will get hungry enough to eat what you gave them. Took my kids like a month to get used to all the veggies, but now they love some of the ones they hated before. Nothing is impossible!! As for my husband, one of the biggest picky eater, I serve it and if he don't like it, then he is hungry. He has finally started to come around. Someone has to be the one to get them going and who better than mom.

Hi I'm Stacy. I am a married mother of 4. 2 of my children take after me- gain weight easily. The other 2 are like their dad, can eat anything! I need healthy meal ideas, so if anyone out there has some, I would love to hear them. I read the other posts about cooking meals that everyone will eat. I know that is simply impossible in our house. I try to cook at least one veggie or side that the picky eater of the evening will eat. I'm glad to be here.

Hi! My name is Jennifer. We have started to turn our families health around over the last 6 months and now we are in full family transition. The first few months was a lot of learning on mine and my husbands part. My daughter is like her mother, if she doesn't take care of herself than she will struggle with her weight. My sons on the other hand are just like my husband and eat whatever they like and you still can't pinch an inch. We have started walking every night and giving the kids the option every other night if they would like to go. As we move further they will be incorporating more and more exercise into their lives. They love tennis, volleyball, baseball, rollerblading and bike riding! They just have no idea that those "FUN" things we do are building blocks for their "hopefully" healthy lifestyles in adulthood!!!

Hi! I'm JT. My family and I have already been making lots of healthy changes and I'm hoping this challenge will help bring structure and accountability to our healthy goals. I go to school full time. My son is 4 and he goes to school a few hours a day. My husband works over an hour away, and when he gets home, it's nearly bedtime for our son, plus, DH is exhausted. So, I'm also looking for ways to bring the family together without wearing out DH anymore than he already is. DS and I have no trouble fitting in lots of exercise, but it's difficult to get DH involved with his schedule.

We always make an effort to eat a sit down dinner together every evening. But now I am going to school 3 nights per week and that has shaken that routine up a bit.

Anyway, happy to be here. Looking forward to learning and changing and growing (and shrinking lol)!

-JT

When I go biking, I repeat a mantra of the day's sensations: bright sun, blue sky, warm breeze, blue jay's call, ice melting and so on. This helps me transcend the traffic, ignore the clamorings of work, leave all the mind theaters behind and focus on nature instead. I still must abide by the rules of the road, of biking, of gravity. But I am mentally far away from civilization. The world is breaking someone else's heart. ~Diane Ackerman

Hey everyone. I am so excited about going this challenge. Just what I need to keep the first month going strong. I am a mother of 3 kids, 2 girls and 1 boy. My oldest is girl is 9yrs old and my two youngest are 4yr old twins. I work full time at a hotel at the front desk, go to school for photography full-time (online, thank god) and a wife. We have a busy life but we manage to eat at home meals 99% of the time. I do have those times where I don't want to cook (midterm and final times usually). Anyways I can not wait to get things going.

Hi Mandy...I just joined the group today. I teach 4th grade and have 4 children. It IS difficult to find things everyone will eat!

Overall Goal...150 lbs by New Year's 2016

Current Goal...179 lbs to get out of the 'obese' category!

Exercise is the key. I always forget that. If I'm exercising, I don't want to overeat. I know that is true. I will continue to exercise!!!

Hi...

I'm Nan, a mom to 4 sweet kids and wife to Ran for 24 years. Our kids are a set of triplets and a sweet (but rascally) surprised who arrived 21 months after the trips. Having 4 kids in less than 2 years was quite a challenge, but I took 6 years off work (teaching) to stay home with them.

We did fairly well during that time, staying active and eating well. People would comment constantly about how well and healthy the kdis ate. I had the time and desire to keep things going and could think and focus on what we were eating. During this time, after both pregnancies, I did weight watchers and lost all the weight from both pregnancies.

When the trips turned 5 and went to Kindergarten, I decided it was time to go back to work. At that time, my dh returned to sea duty as his Navy assignment. Suddenly, our orderly world just fell apart. Meals became a challenge, we resorted to quick, easy options, and then started to throw in dessert wtih each meal to get them to eat quickly. Crazy, I know. But at that time, we needed them to sit down, eat quickly, and get on with the evening so we could get them in bed for school the next day.

Of course, the downside was that they started expecting dessert each day. And so did I! Through the years, we'd try to reign it in and then find that wed slip back to bad habits. We still always ate meals together, but often it was take out we'd bring home or order. If it was homecooked, it was something quick and often out of a box or bag. We chow down to get to dessert. Everyday.

It hit me this summer as I topped the scales at more than 200 for the first time in a long time, and the kids started asking for dessert after lunch and even breakfast. What???? How did we get to this point?

So...time for a change. We added in exercise first by going for nightly walks on the beach. It was a fun way to get it in and we all enjoyed it. We were still eating dessert, but I was gearing up for more healthy meals, and cooking more...and not out of box or bag.

This week, we returened from a month long trip to see family to an empty refrigerator. I decided this was the perfect time to kick it all off right again. I shopped for only healthy stuff with a meal plan in mind. We've eaten healthy, homecooked meals all week. We also started the C25K together and are loving it. We're still doing our nightly walks at least 3 times a week on the beach too.

Hopefully we will stay on the right track and I'm hoping this family challenge will keep me focused. I have 2 weeks before I have to go back to school. I need to get organized, get a monthly meal calendar going and get these new habits built back in before the rush of work pours over us again.

Glad to be here!!!! Nan

My name is Roxanne. I have an 8 yr old and a 6 yr old. Due to our crazy schedule I find it hard to sit to dinner as a family. I really am working on this. I also find it difficult to prepare healthy meals we can all eat.

Beans were voted down. I gave them 5 white beans and I thought the end of the world was here.

Hi, my name is Tami. I lost about 60 lbs. using Weight Watchers about 5 years ago. I've been plateaued for over two years with some severe health problems. My family (husband and 3 at-home children) all were overweight. This year they decided they wanted to join me in our weight loss journey. Our 19 year old son has lost over 50 lbs., our 14 year old daughter has lost about 20 lbs., and my husband has lost over 40 lbs. Our 11 year old son didn't need to lose weight but has improved his eating habits.
After about 6 months they've kind of lost their enthusiasm (although they're all sticking to the diet) so I decided to join this and tell them what's going on to give them a new motivation. I'll keep everyone informed on how we're doing!

My name is Andrea - I am married and have three kids. While in general we are fairly good at making healthy choices, I know there is vast room for improvement! The past several months we have actually gone downhill, so my husband and I have committed to changing our habits and being better examples for our kids.

Hi, I'm Jessica and my family looks forward to the challenge. I am an LPN and my husband and I have a what was once a very energetic 10 year old who has recently discovered he would rather sit around with tv and video games. By making this a challenge his sense of compition should get us all more motivated toward a healthier lifestyle.

Hi! Just joined your team today. What a great idea to include the kids and everyone in the house! Hope this is the team I am looking for to find inspiration and motivation. I'm a stay at home mom of 3 (14, 12 and 7). The kids are pretty active but our eating habits could defiantly use a makeover! Any kids friendly/nutritional recipes out there? Looking forward to this challenge. ;)

Hi All!

My name is tia and i'm a 27yo mom that works 2 jobs, attends college full time, leads cubscouts, and helps special needs kids during the shcool year. My househould got a bit of a wake up call when we got a WII board and the new WII fit plus program. It was a bit of a shock to see how fat our MII's were and that caused us to really look at ourselves. The only one who did not have any weight issues was my son.

I want to get the house into better shape and to teach my son how to be healthy now so he will not have the problems the rest of us are having as adults. I've also talked with my son about child obesity and how to avoid it. The reason we have duscussed obesity is that his friend (one of the special needs children I help) is seven and weighs well over 100 lbs (he has to wear mens clothes to fit him). When the school year starts he will be spending eache vening with me and I want to teach him as well how to be healthy and fit.

Anyways thats it, just wanting to get healthy and involve those around me. My hardest challange is my "fiance" who does not enjoy the idea of eating healthy. THe boys love eating carrots, and apples, and other healthfood....it's the adults taht are the issue so any tips would be great!!

emoticon and emoticon new members! I understand completely about wanting your whole family on the same page when it comes to eating and fitness. I think everyone would agree that is what they want, but it is easier said then done. I am fortunate that I have a fiancee who loves to cook and he doesn't mind eating healthy along with me. However, my 10 year old son is a different matter. He loves to sneak snacks so we have had to lock up the pantry and log his tv time and his snacks. He is only allowed 3 a day. It was a bad day on Sunday, because we found out that he had snuck like 15 extra snacks at some point when our back was turned. He just eats them like they are water. I don't get it, but this is what his counselor says to do. So we are trying all we can.

Hi there,

I am a mother of two girls and have recently married my husband who also has 3 children. Our family needs to get on the same page with our health and fitness goals. Sometimes the snacking and electronics time gets out of control and it drives me nuts!

As parents we are trying to set a good example, but could definitely use some help in this area.

I am looking forward to learning some tips and tricks with this team and the challenges involved!

JUST BELIEVE and anything can happen!

Hi all, My name is Harry and I live in Florida. I'm married and have four children. Three are on their own, daughter in Calif., son in Ark., and son in Florida. I have one son at home who is 8 years old. I've joined this challenge for a few reason, mostly because my son and I are slightly overweight, and I've recently been diagnosed as a pre-diabetic. My wife, Mary, just found out she may be anemic. So, I figure I could get a lot good info from this challenge, that would benefit us all.

Hi all I am Sharon from Toledo, Ohio. I just rejoined and am trying to start again. I think my turning point happened when I moved. See in my old place mirrors we high up but in my current bathroom it shows all. I didn't like what I saw. I also have seen the same thing happening to my oldest daughter. She is almost 10 and almost as tall as me at 5'5" and already in jr sizes that are increasing. I need to change this now.

Hi there. My name is Joalyne (Jolene) and I am married to a wonderful husband with whom I have a his, hers, and ours family. We have already started the challenge and the kids have been great about it - including getting rid of all their icky high fructose corn syrup snacks! We are hoping this challenge will keep us motivated to be the healthy family we want to be.

Hi, I am 40 and live with my husband (no children). My husband has always been a healthy guy, whereas I am have always been overweight with few healthy habits. Since we have been married, a few of his habits have rubbed off on me, but some of mind have rubbed off on him. We both exercise regularly, but need to step it up since we are getting middle aged and our metabolism (especially his!) is changing. As I have always struggled with my weight, I am open to suggestions and plans. He may not be so open as he has never had to keep track of things or really question what he eats. I really look forward to doing this together as I suspect that once we get started, we will do really well together!

Hi Everyone,

I am Becky. I live in Michigan with my hubby of 15 years and our 2 daughters ages 10 and 7. My older daughter, hubby and I need to eat healthier and I know my younger daughter needs to learn what a healthy livestyle looks like so she can continue living it as she gets older.

My name is Lora and I have three kids ages 9, 8 and 6 (my 6 year old is my only son:O). My middle daughter is overweight but my other two are on the other end of that. I struggle with my weight as well and have decided that this needs to be a family change. No more feeding them hotdogs while I eat fish and veggies.

Mostly I joined for support and ideas on how to handle the issue of weight with daughters who are so close to being tweens and having their self esteem becoming so delicate. Plus ideas on exercise and meals will be great too.

Lora

Hi! My name is Diane. I am a single mother with 2 kids (8 and 5). I am a teacher, looking forward to really buckling down and getting some great habits going this summer. I really want to set a good example for my kids - so I've found that I usually hit the drive-thrus after they fall asleep in the car, and do the most serious binging after they go to bed at night.

Hi. My name is Beth. I live in Michigan. I've been married for almost 5 years and our son just turned 3. I have been unsuccessfully dieting for about 15 years. My husband and I have been very diligent about our diet in front of our son and eating dinner together virtually every night. Three months ago I joined SP. I need to lose the extra weight and gain control of my stress related snacking during work and late at night.

I joined this challenge because I wanted to learn and make sure the steps we've taken as a family are moving in the right direction. Similar to many people on SP, I have some healthy family habits I learned from my childhood but I also have some I don't want to use (ie, the eat everything on your plate rule).

"Everything in moderation exception Awesome. There can never be too much Awesome."

Hi, my name is Irma or Mima. I am married for 24 years now to Ariel. We have 2 children: Janet 22 and Eddie 18. I joined this team because I want my family to eat healthy meals and eat together as a family. I am overweight, I need to lose about 48 pounds and even though my son is slim, he needs to eat healthier. He loves pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and lots of soda. He needs to add vegetables and fruits to his diet and limit sodas. My daughter is more aware of eating healthy but she still needs to lose some weight, about 10-15. I know my husband will eat whatever I make, he is not picky.

Hello - my name is Marcia and I am married with a 5 year old son. I went back to working full-time last year and just haven't been able to figure out how to get everything done that needs to be done. My husband and son do a lot of playing and it seems that I am always playing catch-up with all the chores. I joined this challenge to help me focus on working as a family team and be able to enjoy more play time together.
