Hello,

I'm on day 4 of my better eating and whole-person wellness resolution, and one of my goals is to get up when the alarm goes off each day--no snoozing!

I thought the sleep challenge would be a good one for me to make sure that in addition to eating and exercising optimally, I'm also getting the sleep I need.

Tracker shows my short-term goal. Long-term plan below:

Started 1/3/11 at 161
151 - new casual sneakers (MET 2/14/11)
146 - mani and pedi
141 - new bras
136 - mani and pedi
131 - massage and facial
126 - bottle of veuve clicquot
121 - iPad!

Hello,

My name is Becky. I am just starting back on my Spark health plan after a very long break (oops!), and I thought the Sleep Challenge sounded like a great idea! Im a night owl and an occasional insomniac, who prioritizes personal time over sleep at all times, but I am tired of being tired.

I want to attempt to develop some better, healthier habits. I have also been sick a lot in the past year with random stupid stuff, which is very annoying, and is probably due to the fact that I dont sleep enough to have a healthy immune system. My veterinarian friend nags me to death about my sleep issues/choices, so I am finally going to try to actively do something about it.

Wish me luck, and good luck to all of you too!

Becky

Hi,
My name is Patty! I am happy to join such a wonderful website. I really need to get back on track and get to bed on time. I teach first grade and returned back to school on Monday after Christmas break. I work late into the night and it is not healthy. I am trying to get into bed by 10 each night.

I am looking for new friends if anyone is interested in joining up to obtain great results in 2011 please let me know.

A little info about me. I currently weigh about 250 and want to lose around 100 pounds. I have heavy most of my adult life and am ready for a change.

Thanks for being a supportive group.

Patty

Hi Everyone!
Im a 1 year Sparker! I decided to try the sleep challenge because I think it is one of the biggest obstacles towards my health. I think I have some bad habits that sabotage my gym and healthy eating habits, not to mention my patients with my girls (age 4 and 1 1/2). Im doing pretty good, and so far getting more sleep than I thought! Good Luck with the Challenge everyone!

Hi, my name is Liz, I do have a hard time sleeping and getting the proper amount of sleep. Part of it is stress. I also have bi-polar which is well controlled for the most part with medication. For some odd reason I am afraid to go to sleep lol. I have been going to sleep at 2 or 3 am get up around 9 but feel unmotivated and tired all day. Hopefully this will help me get a bit of control over not sleeping normally. emoticon

Hi everyone. My name is Judy and I joined this challenge as the motivation to actually stop talking about doing what I need to do, and actually do what I need to do. A big problem I have is doing things like bill paying before bed on top of being a night owl. Once I'm asleep I'm usually out till morning. I also need to try getting up at roughly the same time, even on weekends, so my body knows what to expect.

Hi My name is Paula I suffer from insomnia and excessive daytime sleepiness= E.D.S., I have bi-polar illness as well which does not help with my sleep patterns. Currently I'm sleeping about 3 and half hours a night. And fall asleep if I sit for about 30-45 minutes a day. I'm on prescription medication for both the insomnia and the E.D.S. which does help if not for it I would almost never fall asleep or stay awake. I'm looking for the participating in this challenge and accomplishing some of my goals. I'm also currently tracking my sleep patterns and it has improved the last month or so. I'm also have sleep apnea and wear a c-pap mask at night to improve my quality of sleep.

Hi, I have had trouble sleeping for as long as I can remember. I have prescription sleep aids, but I do not taking them. I have the hardest time falling asleep, and when I do, I'm such a light sleeper so I wake up numerous times a night. I am hoping that trying to get into some sort of routine will help me. I am also hoping that by joining this challenge that I can trick my body into a normal sleep pattern. Wish me luck!

Hello right back, Jennifer. I think most of us just need to get a rubber stamp made up and stamp it at the top of our introduction.

The lack of sleep can sure make a mess of our lives, huh? We sometimes have to laugh to keep from crying. I really believe in this program and I want us all to be winners.

Hugs,

Hi, my name is Suzy. My family has a history of sleep challenges and it is my hope to nip any challenges I may have in the bud.

Now that I have, ahem, reached a certain age, I find my sleep quality has suffered.

Hello All! My name is Jennifer. I'm new to the Team. I was drawn to this team because I have always had sleep problems. I can fall asleep (but not without reading a book first, it's my routine), but I can't always stay asleep. And, as others have said, I am a very light sleeper. On top of that, it doesn't seem to matter how much sleep I get - I still feel tired the next day. I'm hoping my new exercise program will help!

I can do this.

I'm Kathleen.

I get enough sleep. What I don't get is quality rest. I sometimes wake up exhausted, even after 10 hours of sleep. I go to bed at the same time & get up at the same time during the week. I get about 7-8 hours during the week & 10 on the weekends.

I'm hoping this challenge will help me wake up feeling rested.

Hi, I'm Sue.
I needed to start things up again with my healthy choices and decided that getting enough sleep was where I would start. I have trouble getting to bed at a decent time and then cannot fall asleep for sometimes hours. Then I sleep in in the morning, getting a late start to the day.
So I am hoping to learn some new things here that can help.

Hi! I'm so happy to join this team and get wonderful feedback from you precious SparkPeople.

So you teach English as a Second Language. You are to be commended. This is definitely something that requires a lot of patients and dedication.

I retired from a youth corrections facility and occasionally substitute teach these teens. Those without English skills definitely require all the help they can get or they suffer more than just being locked up.

Hi all! Getting a grip on a good night's sleep is my goal. Actually, a lifetime of good night sleeps would be even better. I'm hoping to learn how to go back to sleep if I wake up too early, how to sleep through the night and how to relax before sleeping so that I don't wake myself up thinking about the things I should be doing. Not too much to ask is it? :0)

"Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. God is awake."

I'm sure the jet lag is absolutely miserable, Miryam. I wonder why it's worse one direction than the other. I'm thrilled for you that you have lost so much weight already. Congratulations. I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row, so I can get some decent sleep AND lose weight while taking care of my diabetes. Whew! Wears me out just thinking about all I have to deal with. But I've got the feeling SparkPeople is the answer.

Let's keep working together to meet our common goals.

Hi All - Jen from Phoenix, AZ here.

My sleep issues come from having multiple chronic autoimmune conditions that include a lot of physical pain. I've been Sparkin' for 3.5 months now and have lost 35 lbs and no longer need my C-PAP machine! This is a great victory for me and I'm only too happy to be done with it.

I look forward to interacting with you all and to better night's sleep ahead!

Hi Everyone,

My name is Miryam, and I live in Jerusalem. I've been having sleep trouble for a while, and it's been exacerbated for the past week by severe jet lag. (Jet lag hits me hard when it's from the US to Israel, but not the other way around.) I am looking forward to the getting a handle on my sleep patterns!

Hi! My name is Irene and I've been almost a life-long insomniac. It seems to run in the family and most of us have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. I don't seem to fall into the category of going to bed at the same time each night in order to sleep.

I've had sleep studies on and off for years. They seem to show that I'm not getting enough oxygen, but even that doesn't work because I toss and turn a lot and knock the tube out of my nose. I can either find it on the floor beside my bed, or clear across the room entangled in my bedding. Diabetic neuropathy or restless leg don't help this situation. I'm like Stella in that I always feel tired the next morning.

I need some rules but already know a lot of them:
No TV
Calm colors
Bedroom should be orderly (A problem for this packrat)
I read an article on here about keeping a sleep journal but I haven't tried that.
No eating in bed

I'm excited to get working on this situation and then sharing it with my siblings and cousins.

Thanks,
Irene emoticon

Hi, everyone; I'm Renee. Since I was a kid I have always had trouble sleeping at night but have no trouble sleeping until noon. Because that wouldn't go over too well with my boss I figure I need to make the best of it. I would love to exercise in the mornings but I have enough trouble dragging myself out of bed with a bare minimum amount of time to get ready for work as it is.

Hi, my name is Stella. I joined this team because despite getting more than 8 hours of sleep every night, I still almost always wake up tired. I also have trouble falling asleep and often wake up during the night.

Hi,
I joined this team because I have a lot of trouble sleeping a reasonable amount every night. I can fall asleep but wake up in a few hours. Sometimes I get back to sleep but rarely ever sleep more than 6 hours. I would like to sleep more. I am VERY tired some days and fall asleep in the middle of sitting and doing things. The days I sleep less than 4 or 5 hours are the worst. I seldom have a chance to nap. I hope this team will help me get a better pattern.

emoticon Hi, My name is Dawn and I'm hoping to learn how to reset my sleep cycle. I've fallen into a bad habit of staying up all night, crashing about 4 or 5 in the morning, and then toss and turn until 10 or 11. Sometimes I would take a nap in the afternoon which could be as long as 3 hours. I have been back with SP since 11/1/2010 and have lost 18.8lbs so far. I know I need to sleep better to help with my weight loss and to have the energy to keep motivated. I'm hoping this Challenge will help me with this goal. Looking forward to getting the proper emoticon .

Well hello, I've come to learn all I can about how sleep affects my health. I admit I, at first, thought this was a silly challenge but now believe it is a main reason why I keep getting sick quite often.

Here it goes, I've loved every other challenge and am certain to Spark forward from today...

Welcome James, John, and Kathy! This is a great team to get some tips, suggestions, and positive feedback on getting a good night's sleep. I found just giving myself permission to indulge in 9 hours a night (without feeling guilty!) has helped a lot!

Good Morning, my name is Kathy and I'm new to the blog. After 2 years of waking up at 1:00 a.m. and not being able to get back to sleep (and I have to have a TV on to sleep... not good.) I realized this is a terrible cycle. I'm going to sleep earlier each night to "catch up" and no longer can brag about how little sleep I need. And, I read all the health issues (ah, weight gain...) related to lack of sleep. My career suffers, my home life suffers. Hope sharing can help give me some new approaches rather than drugs.

I started this challenge because I know I need to sleep more than I do. The days I work I get an average of about 5 hours sleep, the days I don't work I try to get more but it doesn't always work out. I want to try and make a regular amount of sleep a habit since it is so important.

Just remember..........one day at a time;-)

My name is Colleen, I have been a night shift worker for years. no longer working now. I find it very easy to stay up all night go to bed at 6 am and get up at noon. I find it hard to get my sleep changed around .That is one thing I want to work on first as I know how important that is to good health and weight loss. So I will be starting the challenge now to help me get better sleep habits.

I've been on here a week and just realized I never did come on and introduce myself. I have never seemed to require much sleep, and yet I have learned that my lack of sleep is part of my weight problem. I'm hoping to learn to sleep 7 to 8 hours a night by going through this 28 day challenge. It's been up and down so far, but I am sleeping 7 to 8 hours at least half the time so I guess little by little I will get there:) Tonight is a not much sleep night (it's 12:45 a.m. and I am blogging):( Oh, well, I WILL get there. Like the little engine that could -I think I can, I think I can. And then there was finally success! emoticon

Hello, fellow sleepies! I'm Meri, a night-shift nurse in New Mexico. On the best of days, I have trouble falling asleep, get 3 or 4 hours of sleep, wake up, more trouble falling back asleep, and wake up before my alarm goes off. I don't use an alarm for most of my days off, unless I need to get up and do something. I flip back and forth from being awake at work at night and sleeping at night so I can get things done on my days off. I use all the typical tricks - thunderstorm CD, clock radio playing surf sounds, dark curtains, etc. It's just really hard to "set a schedule and stick to it" emoticon
