Hi, I'm KayBee from the Chicago area. This is definitely the team/challenge for me. I always feel the need to stay up late. I get my second wind around 9-10 and don't feel sleepy until midnight or one or later. But then in the morning it's impossible for me to get up. And during the day I always feel sleepy.

I've made a big effort to get more sleep this summer and I have seen some improvements. But now I'm going to try to do even better, and I luckily, I have an extra advantage to help me do better this time (I hope!) I just got back from a trip to Europe, so while trying to re-adjust to the seven hour time difference, I'm trying very hard to reset my sleeping patterns to more of a "morning lark" schedule. So far it's working because I've needed a lot of sleep since getting back. But this weekend will be a big test. I hope I don't stay up too late tonight and Sunday night.

Good luck to everyone on this challenge!

Hi!!! My name is Lottie and I live in Kinston, NC. I have had trouble sleeping for a long time now. I get up at least twice during the night and find it hard to go back to sleep but when I do, I sleep hard. I find it hard to get to sleep the start with. I hope this challenge will help me to get better quality sleep so I can have energy the next day and not from a bottle of Diet Mountain Dew.

Hey sparkers -

I'm Allison, I'm 23 and a grad student. It probably goes without saying that I don't sleep on a regular schedule and I only get my 8 hours a night about 50% of the time. I know I need more sleep than this so I'm determined to see this challenge through!!

Hello!

My name is Kathleen and I'm from Ottawa, Canada. Over the last few years I have struggled with periodic severe bouts of insomnia. Right now I am struggling to maintain a schedule of sorts...I'm currently not working and that has led to really late nights and sleeping in till noon. I am going to try to get myself into bed by 11pm and up by 7:30am.

I am looking forward to this challenge and I hope to gain some valuable habits over the next four weeks. :D

Hi, I'm Kathryn from Central Florida. I am part of the "I Need Sleep" Team and I'm glad I found this challenge. I've always been a night owl and have paid a heavy price for shortchanging myself on sleep.

I have several procedures that work for me but I don't use them consistently but I'm hoping to develop more discipline by participating in this challenge.

I introduced myself in the wrong section.... still figuring out the logistics of SparkPeople. I need this sleep challenge because I've developed bad habits of late nights and late wakeup times. I'm more productive in the mornings, and getting up and after it helps me feel more empowered.

I suspect high caffeine consumption is complicating this goal. I'm now tracking caffeine via Spark People, and am so blown away by the flexibility on this site.

Hi, My name is Melissa and I am new to the challenge. I have always had difficulty sleeping because my thoughts run over the days actions and worry about what is going to happen tomorrow. Wondering why someone said something or did something and what it had to do with me. I was challenged to keep a gratitude journal for 6 weeks which ended yesterday. The journal has helped me sleep better but not where I would like to be at yet. It has also helped me see things in a more positive view through out the day. I really just want to get some sound sleep and feel refreshed in the morning and awake during the day.

My problem is that I usually watch TV to make myself fall asleep. I wake up frequently in the middle of the night and find it hard to go back to sleep again so that definitely cuts my rest time short. For a while, I used to do bedtime motivations but I got tired of it and stopped. Now I want to challenge myself to turn of the TV 15 mins before bed time, meditate before I sleep and get at least 8 hours a night.

Hi, I don't sleep very soundly and my husband often turns on his bedside lamp to read himself back to sleep when he wakes up. This often wakes me and makes it hard to go back to sleep. My part of the problem is I have trouble going to bed at the same time every day, and as a result I have days when I sleep 10 hours and others when I only get 6. I know that this leads to a very irregular schedule and not having energy when I need it. I'm hoping that this challenge will give me the structure to get a proper routine for sleep.

Hi Everyone,

I joined this team because I saw the award on someone else's page and I wanted to earn one myself. I usually sleep well, but my challenge is going to bed at a regular time. I'm looking forward to learning about and experiencing many health benefits. Good luck to all of you, as well!!

Hi, I'm Jenn. I recently bought a Bodymedia Fit that tracks my sleep time and quality and found that I do not sleep long enough. I get 6-7 hours on average (I lay there 9-10 hours) and wake up exhausted most days. Looking forward sleeping better.

Hi, I have sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome, both of these keep me from getting a deep sleep. I have no difficulty falling asleep. I look forward to learning anything I can to help me get a good nights sleep. I like the idea of the challenge. I work full time and my job is challenging and stressful, but I love it because each day is different and I feel that I make a difference. I enjoy gardening, reading and singing. I have 14 grandchildren that are amazing. My husband is very supportive of me, but he too wishes I could sleep better.

Hi Everyone. This is my first Challenge ever. Went to bed earlier than usual. Trying to change my sleep schedule so that I am up earlier in the morning and can accomplish something with my day. Being unemployed has caused me to become lazy with staying up late and sleeping late. A bad habit to get into.

First let me say I AM NOT A NIGHTOWL! When my kids were young, they were in bed by 9 and I was in bed by 10:30 (gotta watch the news and weather).

My routine hasn't changed since my kids are all gone. However, my sleeping has. I have some carpal tunnel issues so I turn over a million times at night when my arms or shoulders hurting wakes me. I've tried pain relievers and some sleep aids, but I have VIVID NIGHTMARES when I use them. VIVID!

My newest venture has been relaxing tea. I hope this helps along with this challenge.

I have recently changed work schedule,

I sleep about 4 to 5 hours a night...even with RX meds. I wake up in the middle of the night and it's all over. I am feel really tired most of the time. Insomnia is ruling my life right now.

I don't drink caffeine, smoke or take naps (except on Saturdays). I'm not on any meds that should keep me awake...

I hope this challenge helps.

Hi -- I learned about this team/challenge from WalkingAnnie and just want to see what it's all about. I am generally asleep between 9:45-10:30 PM; up between 6:30-7 AM. Some nights I waken with the mind going full blast - those are troublesome. I guess what I'd say is my reason for being here is I still feel like I could sleep longer - would love an afternoon nap ... and it doesn't seem like I should need MORE than what I'm getting. I do remember dreams often - maybe not sleeping deep enough? Have to explore the team and see what's what.

Hi! I'm just back from a 5 day vacation ... had to come back ... needed the sleep! Put 2000+ miles on the car. Anyway, I'm a night owl, which explains why I'm NOT a morning person. I TRY to drag into work by 9am, but I'm normally up 'til AFTER midnight, so when the alarm goes off at 7, I have a BAD tendency to keep hitting the snooze! I toss and turn all night, and get up to pee regularly and I get back to sleep quickly, but I'm still not well rested. I NEED to get on a regular schedule!

Hi everyone emoticon

This is my first week of using this site. I stumbled upon it and was amazed at how user friendly and thorough it is. I joined the sleep challenge because I am a night owl and by some cruel twist of fate work as a baker at 4am!

I do not get enough sleep. After the kids are in bed, the house is quiet, which my wife and I like to use as our time. My challenge is enjoying time with my family in the evenings and still getting to bed early enough to get adequate sleep for a 4AM wake up.

I am hoping this challenge will help get me to bed earlier on a regular basis.

Hi everyone - I've just discovered these Challenges on the site - great idea! It would have been nice to start with September 1st, but I'm starting today, Sept 7.

I have always struggled with sleep. I am a night owl so getting myself to go to bed is the hardest part. I stay up for all sorts of reasons but I guess it boils down to stress and distractions. 5 years ago I was going to bed between 1-3 am and getting up at 7:30. Now I'm going to bed between 12-1:30 am and getting up between 7 and 8am.

I also have TMJ and grind my teeth so hard that I break them. I now have a TMJ guard which helps, but I can still wake up with headaches.

I also have a cat who likes to wake me up at 4am sometimes. I live in a small apartment, so closing him out is not an option.

I'd like to have time in the morning to actually get ready, not just rush around, and my goal is also to get up and do some yoga in the morning.

So, my goal is to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night.

I haven't read all the materials yet but I hope to post again once I've got some data.

Hi all,
My name is Rebecca and I live in Massachusetts, obviously. :-)

Sometimes I get to bed on time and sometimes I don't. Either way I usually wake up DURING the night so I'm not really sure how to be counting my sleep. Last night I fell asleep a little after 10pm but I woke up several times, and then I got up around 3:30am for a little while. I was up again around 5am, 6am, and finally got up a little before 7am when my daughter got up for the day.

I'm a very light sleeper, except for the first 2 hours when I fall asleep I guess.

Not sure how I'll do on the challenges and goals for this team, but I'm trying.

Hi Fellow Sleep Seekers,
I do not go to bed early enough. I need to be in bed by 10 pm b/c I'm up between 5 & 5:30 AM in order to exercise before work. My evenings are busy with family activities and the basics like cooking & laundry.

I am doing this challenge to be accountable to go to bed on time!

Hi everyone,
I, generally, go to bed a little before 10:00 and wake up between 3:30 and 4:00. I also wake up a couple of times a night. I seem to wake up out of a deep sleep pretty quickly and tend to remember a lot of my dreams.
I am able to function during the day. But, I know that I should be getting more sleep and hope that this SparkTeam can help me. Thanks for setting it up.
Your Fellow Sparker,
Bob

Hi Everyone! I have a slightly different problem. Most nights, I do get 7-8 hours of sleep--really sound sleep! HOWEVER, I may not go to bed until 2 or 3 a.m. which means I get up.... well, do the math! I don't work and most mornings I don't have to go anywhere. On mornings that I have meetings (on a couple of boards in our town), I am a wreck. I don't like living this way; it really cuts into productivity. But here it is after midnight.....

Hello all! I am Becky, and this is actually the beginning of Week 2 in the challenge for me. I didn't introduce myself in Week 1 because I wanted to do the steps for Week 1 and really examine what I need from this challenge before I said hello.

So, hello! Here's my goal in this challenge. I have the most difficult time getting to bed early enough to get at least 7 hours (preferably 8!) of sleep. The trouble for me is that I like to exercise in the morning before my children are up for school and I am ready for work. I need to get up at 5am to accomplish this...which means I need to be in bed by 10pm.

That seems completely reasonable when I write it here! Getting myself to bed by 10, however, is very difficult. Keeping the journal last week was helpful in recognizing just how far off I am each night, but I'm still struggling with getting to bed.

Sorry for the novel!

My name is Deborah and I have had trouble sleeping off and on for many years. Right now I have spine problems that wake me in pain nightly, so I don't always get a good solid night's sleep, and frequently awaken exhausted, and in pain.
I aim to get to bed at a reasonable hour (for me) by midnight and follow relaxation techniques to get myself some decent sleep.

Hi

I am looking forward to focusing on getting more sleep. I have no problems going to sleep once I hit the pillow. I have problems 'stopping' the day - I just keep trying to get 'one more' item done from my list. My goal is to use the time of 7:30 to be my cut-off time for starting new things, getting the kids ready for bed and starting to wind down. Look forward to 'meeting' all of you.

Keep Smiling

I'm Marsha. I followed Val and Annie here. It is 12:39am and I have listened to my Sleeping Soundly self hypnosis DVD by Dr. Michael Yapko twice and it didn't work tonight. I just can't get comfortable. My stomache feels rumbly and empty. My shoulders and neck won't relax. I have some trouble with my jaw (the TMJoint) and my ears always feel stuffy. Most of the stuff that bothers me I can ignore during the day, but I lay down and become too aware of discomforts. So, that's why I'm here and going to do my best to try to learn to sleep better.

Hi everyone, I am Val and I followed Annie on to this site (thanks Annie!) I have been having sleep issues. Staying up too late because I don't "feel like" going to be or else going to bed and tossing and turning until I can fall asleep, only to wake up half an hour later and so on.
I am going to follow this challenge as faithfully as possible. I have also just started on some adrenal support supplements that a naturopath recommended. So this will be a good way to see how they all work.

Daily affirmation:
* I am a good person, and I deserve respect.
* I choose to respect myself today by refusing to engage in verbal or emotional self-abuse.
* I have been successful at many things I have set out to do, and I can learn to do better at the things that give me problems.

Hi and thanks for the warm welcome that I've had already. I'm Annie and, like most others here, I'm hoping to improve my sleep patterns. I was very ill last year with septicaemia and multiple organ failure. I spent weeks in hospital in intensive care with some time on a ventilator and life support.

SP has been a massive part of my recovery. I'm almost back to normal now but have problems in sleeping through the night. For a long time I had nightmares and flashbacks and I found it difficult to get comfortable in bed. This is improving now but I think that this challenge could really help.

Thanks and good luck to others who are starting out here.

Hi, everyone. My goals are to get to bed earlier! I always seem to be up watching TV or on the computer!! Like now! LOL!! I am usually up untill at least 12m and up by 7am, and off to work at 8. With school and my son's football practice and games I am finding it hard to work out in the evenings. So I want to go to bed early and get up early to work out!!

Hi Guys i'm new to this team and joined because, as like many of you, i have huge trouble sleeping through the night- which leaves me exhausted for the day! the crazy thing is i seem to have no trouble sleeping for three hours on the trot when i nap during the day (which i pretty much have to do everyday to make it through!) I started the sleep challenge last night but i did also take a sleeping pill.. i think that might be cheating....

anyway i look forward to this challenge and meeting some of you on our journey! xx

Hi, I'm Jan and I occasionally wake up around 2 and lay there for 2-3 hours trying to get back to sleep. I'm hoping to learn some helpful tips to overcome that.

My name is Marilyn and I am the proverbial night owl - awake until 2 AM and still can't get to sleep! Then I spend the rest of the day trying to stay awake.

I've been trying to get back on a "normal" schedule for the last few months but haven't been able to figure out how to do that. I hope this challenge can help.

My name is Sue, I joined this Challenge 3 or 4 days ago. I think I am a typical insomniac! I have trouble going to sleep, then I wake up often and many times am not able to go back to sleep. Even when I think I sleep all night and well, I am still worn out the next day. As my grandma use to say, "I am to pooped to pop."
I really hope I can get some help here.

Hello everyone. My name is Diane and I am 32 years old. I joined sparkpeople several weeks ago and this is my first challange. I have a bad habit of not going to bed early enough and then my dog wakes me up at 6AM to go for her walk. This leaves me feeling sluggish all day at work. Hope this helps me to get to bed at a decent time!

I'm Patty. I'm going to be 37 next month. I'm overweight & do not take care of myself. I worked with a trainer 2 years ago & lost 30lbs & over 10% body fat. 20 of those lbs are back & I don't want to know how much of the body fat! After loosing weight I went & got a social life, but that had me drinking more & staying out waaaay too late. This has wrecked my sleep which I think has impacted my ability to exercise & my attitude. I'm starting new again & need all the support I can get.
Thanks for reading!
Patty

Hi! My name is Jessica. I am a 35 yr old Mom of 2 boys ages 15 and 9. I am also engaged to be married on 10-10-10 to my fiance Mark.

I am a HORRIBLE sleeper. I always have been. It's actually 1:30 AM as I am writing this. I've been an insomniac since I was little. I also suffer from debilitating migraines and any change in my sleep causes me to get one. I usually have to take 2 Bendryl to fall asleep or else I'm up the entire night.

One thing that I know of that keeps me wide awake is that I have tinnitus which is a constant ringing and buzzing in my ears. I have to sleep with some type of noise on whether it is the TV or the air conditioner or some other type of noise. It's very disruptive to my sleep but I have to have it to get any type of sleep at all! I need help!

Hello, I am Carol...and I do not get enough sleep. I really need to curtail my nighttime activities and hit the hay earlier. I am a stay at home mom with my own business...so all my work gets done after they go to bed plus I am totally addicted to trashy TV....I can't seem to turn off an episode in the middle even if it is TiVo'd!! This year my youngest starts school so I am hopeful I will get my work done during that time and be able to watch all my garbage TV earlier in the night :)...yawn

Hello,
Unlike others on this team, I do not have any trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. It sounds crazy, but I won't, don't go to bed even though I may be exhausted. I'm on SparkPeople, playing computer games, doing "one more thing" which is never important and any number of other things that seem like they should be done before I go to bed.

I at one time believed I could "get away with" 4 or 5 hours of sleep but as I've gotten older I am completely aware of how lack of sleep has such negative effects on my mood, my eating, and my exercise. And yet I don't do what I know is the right thing to do to meet my goals.

Last week I had only one day of exercise and really felt unwell all week. My average night's sleep was a little over six hours a night, but I also had three consecutive days with 4 hours, 6 hours and 5 hours.

This week I've had four nights in a row where I had at least 8 hours and oh my, do I feel good. My workouts have been great and guess what...my eating has been on target.

My goal this week is to be in bed by 11:00 PM Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday which are the three nights that I have to get up the next morning for work.

I know the answers and I'm hoping participation in this team will help me use and do what I need to do to get adequate sleep.

Hi there - I'm really bad at sticking to a bedtime routine, have trouble falling asleep and I also tend to obsess over stuff in bed, especially work problems. And for a while now I've been waking up about an hour after I fall asleep, heart pounding in panic as if I've forgotten to do something. Last night it happened twice. Kind of scary. So I've decided to take a look at my habits and see if I can get more and better sleep!
