Hi. I am new to this challenge. I am having trouble staying asleep so I thought I would try this challenge. My meds help me sleep but they do not keep me asleep and I really want to be free from sleeping aids.

Hello, I decided to give this challenge a try. I have several medical issues and I know that getting better sleeping habits would help some. I really have no sleeping habits right now. I go to bed when I feel like and wake up when I feel like it. I have no routine at all and I know that I need one. I know that this will help me in other areas of my life as well. It is one of those things that you know you should be doing, but don't. I am here to challenge myself to change that. I want to start doing. I took the sleep quiz and got all 10 answers correct. So, I know what I should be doing.

Hi. I decided to try this challenge to see if it can help me to improve my sleep. Between children, dogs, and chronic health conditions sleep seems to always come last.

I joined because I'm retired, and am going to bed at 7 a.m. No, that's not a misprint. 7 o'clock in the morning. I really need to back up my time going to bed. I've tried, but I'm not doing good at it at all. I got 10 out 10 on the sleep quiz so I know what to do.

emoticon I decided to join this team because I have developed an irregular sleeping pattern. I've worn a Fitbit since January which has really made me aware of the irregularity. I average around 5 hours of sleep. For years I worked 2nd and 3rd shifts, but after I retired I got thrown off that cycle and became a "morning person." I think the irregularity began then. Regardless, here I am realizing I have a problem and trying to focus on the solution.

Hi, after years of work induced sleep disruptions (I'm a retired cardiac nurse and had 30 yrs of screwy schedules and call) so I've been retired for years now and still wake up between 4 and 5 every morning no matter when I go to bed. The cycle then becomes that I have trouble staying up at night since I am dead tired by then, will drift off usually about an hour after I crawl into bed and wake during the night at least once or twice. This got worse of course after a "certain age" which I'm sure most women can appreciate. Like other posters, I know what I should do, got 10 out of 10 correct in the sleep quiz but it's the change making that has been elusive.

Like so many other things in the 10 years Ive been on SP, Maybe this will help and it's always good to know we're in good company!

Hello Team!

I joined this challenge because I had a total hip replacement this summer and have been struggling with insomnia ever since. Reading lots of articles on the internet tells me this is common, but it's NO FUN! I am a teacher with 2 side jobs and am a mother of 2 little girls that need a mommy who is not tired all the time, so I'm hoping this challenge can help me sleep better!

Hi everyone, I joined this challenge because I have been diagnosed 4 years ago by a sleep specialist with Moderate to severe sleep apnea. I found out while in the hospital recovering from surgery. Apparently I scared the nurses with how low my oxygen levels would go.

Anyhow, for the first 2 years afterwards I used my CPAP machine regularly and was getting better. Then for some reason (not really sure why) I stopped using it. I know that I need to start again and work on getting better sleep.

Have a great Day

Hi - I'm here to increase the amount of sleep I'm getting per night. I've also seen the studies which say that chronic sleep deprivation is detrimental to weight loss efforts and I know that my sleep hygiene stinks... screens in the bed, tossing and turning for hours, etc. Looking for some good ideas of what to do instead!

Hi! I joined with a goal of sleeping at least 7 hours per night. My problem is not going to bed early enough to accomplish this. During the work week, I usually sleep only around 6 hours per night. I feel tired and not as alert as I would like. After work, I find it difficult to accomplish enough because I feel lethargic, which leads me to watch TV or "play" with my phone too late - I actually feel too lazy to get up and go to bed!

Hi, I'm Antoinette. I'm 54 years old, post menopausal, and wake up multiple times per night. I have had a sleep study and I have very mild sleep apnea, not even enough to use CPAP, but my doctor thought I should give it a try anyway. I used it for 6 months but It didn't help, in fact I had more sleep issues with it than without it. I keep a very regular sleep schedule even on the weekends. I'm going to try this challenge. I hope my sleep improves because I can tell it's affecting my memory and mental capacity now.

My name is Sherri. I am a 46 year old single mother with 1 teenager daughter (13) still living at home, and 2 living on their own (19 and 20). I have had problems sleeping ever since I was a young teenager. Usually, I can get to sleep pretty good, but I just can't stay asleep. It is getting to the point that I am having trouble functioning and even thinking clearly. It got to the point that I asked for help on the message board and Coach Jen suggested this challenge. I need to find a way to get at least 6 hours of sleep a night.

Hi,
This is something I've never really considered before but at the moment I'm tired all the time. I have spent most of this weekend sleeping and even when I am awake I'm exhausted! I need some help I feel so drained!
I'm not depressed or pregnant and my Drs didn't have much advice to give other than go to bed and get up at the same time for at least 2 weeks.
I've never tried this challenge before so hoping to get some tips.

Hi, I had done this challenge a few years ago, but I am re-starting it today. I am a 50 yo wife of 25 years and mother to 3 young adult children. I am about 70 lbs overweight and have Type II diabetes, High blood pressure and high cholesterol. I am using Sparkpeople premium and have re-dedicated myself to improving my health. Over the past four weeks I have been diligently tracking my food intake; blood sugar readings and establishing a regular but gradually increasing exercise schedule. My sleep patterns are not regular - I use a Fitbit Blaze that tracks the quality/quantity of sleep I am getting. I tend to sleep more on the weekends than during the week. Through this challenge I want to establish a regular nighttime routine to improve my time and quality of sleep.

I know the drill but I still have trouble sleeping. I really hope this team will help me. I know that my age can effect staying asleep and that is my main problem. I hope I can get some help.

Hello everyone! My name is Kristen. I have been having issues with a proper sleep schedule for a long time. My hubby is a night owl, and I want to be, so I stay up late but then have a hard time getting up in the morning and getting myself ready for work and my son ready for school. I am tired throughout most of my day and feel like I have little to no energy (I also have type 1 diabetes and celiac which make me feel tired so getting enough sleep at night is very important for me).
Looking to learn some new sleeping habits and get my sleep patterns under control.

Hey,
I am Lapperoo and want to get better sleep on a consistent basis. I'm a night owl and find it really hard to slow down at night. As the day goes on, the more energy I have. I have always been this way. I'm not a morning person, however, for the past year+ I have been doing water aerobics or swimming at 7:30 a.m. five mornings a week. I don't miss these sessions even if I've had only 5 to 6 hours of sleep. It's easier for me to get up each morning having made this a habit but the sleep did not improve with the added exercise nor with the morning regimen. I don't take naps either.

Hope this sleep challenge will guide me to better sleep and sleep habits.

Hello! Pleased to meet everyone! I really, like to wind down for a long time before i go to bed. Unfortunately, on the computer. I also noticed that if I give up my afternoon coffee with the 3 packets of sugar in it I sleep better. I've stopped that for a week already and it's helping. So glad to be here! emoticon

My name is Tammy and ever since I've been very faithful to wear my Fitbit, sometimes I am surprised at how much sleep I actually get. The Fitbit is the best investment I've ever made. It shows how many hours I slept, how many times I was awake and for how long, and how restless I was.

I know sleep is very important for weight loss. Anything to help me is what I need.

Hi!! My name is Julie and I am glad to find this challenge. I have never slept for long periods, averaging 5.5 hours sleep during the past few years while on CPAP. Prior to that, most of my life I slept 4-5 hours with long naps about once every 3-4 weeks. Since joining Spark People in mid February, I have been on a sleep team and have slightly increased amount of sleep by focusing on this as important for me.

One factor interfering with my sleep is restless leg syndrome, which is helped with medication but this is a balancing act, as if I took enough medication to get rid of RLS symptoms, the side effects would be equally intolerable and my weight would also skyrocket. The CPAP helps me get deeper and better quality sleep and to feel more rested, but sometimes I am unable to sleep with it on due to distraction or to allergies.

I think with help and dedication I might be able to get more sleep and will make this a major focus of my spark program for the next four weeks.

Hi I'm Wendy and I'm trying to be consistent with my sleep. I've just returned from a quick visit to my nieces and want to really work on my sleep patterns so that they are more consistent.
I started keeping a diary before I went away and want to start it again tonight.

I have read online in various weight loss articles that getting enough sleep is very important. Those articles stated that getting enough sleep should reduce cravings for sugary or salty foods. Since I am night owl I really need to work on my sleeping habits. It is too easy for me to fight sleep at night only to regret it the next morning. I hope this challenge will help me start a good sleep habit that will also help me on my weight loss journey.

I have trouble staying asleep when stressed. This happens at least one fo the 2-3 nightsa I spend at my parents doing parent care. At home I put the radio on sleep mode so I can listen to calm NPR and helps me fall asleep.

Hi, I'm Lea.
I have troubles falling asleep and then staying asleep once I'm there. I've been working out pretty consistently for the last 14 weeks, and my internal clock is just starting to adjust to not going to bed at 11 and getting up at 7.

I'm hoping this challenge will help me orient myself so that I learn to go to bed on time and stop hitting the snooze button in the mornings.

Hi my name is Melanie. I'm the mother of a 19 year old daughter and a 30 year old stepson. I work in a high school special education classroom where the children have various disabilities. Spark people has taught me that changing your lifestyle helps keep the weight off instead of just dieting. I've been trying by myself for years with no progress to show for it. Started Sparkpeople in 2011 and left for several years as my life was a mess. Now I'm back and ready to do this.

i have done this challenge before. i did it by myself, but not with a lot of focus or consistancy.
my dh saw a sleep speciualist and told us stuff we alread knew, but just were not doing well. he is now more focused about doing it. i know he is not to blame for my bad habits, but if he embraces good habits and he has already asked for my help, then i will be more focused and inspired to make better choices.

I go in cycles of sleeping a lot and insomnia of different sorts. Some of it has to do with anxiety. I also have been staying up very late lately. Some of that has to do with trying to catch up on things on Spark. Another because I try to pack to much into a day. Also, I have inverted my sleep schedule a bit. I sleep later than I should and some of it has to do with illness another because part of me doesn't care. I want to have a better sleep pattern and be able to get up earlier so I can do my devotional time with God first thing in the morning before the day creeps in to steal the morning away. I have problems with sleep all my life. It started with insecurity as a kid and then just got rocked throughout my life. I am trying to settle down in my ways and want to be as healthy as possible and I realize that sleeping regularly is a big part of that. So, I am all in! I started this last week but was overloaded and not on time so I decided to ditch a few other teams I had that I didn't do as much with and begin this on Sunday as I have done. I want a schedule, routine, and more predictability. I think doing this challenge will benefit me a lot. I like the idea of sticking around and restarting it too. I am a slow learner I think in this area because of bad habits and stubborness. LOL. Well, it's off to sleep I go later. Can't wait for the first email!

Hi all. I'm one of those people who get to sleep quickly but then awaken two or three times a night and have trouble getting back to sleep. I have recently started playing music (Tibetan Meditation, even a folk album I'm very familiar with, Julian Bream's lute music, etc.) when I go to sleep. I have found that is making some difference. If nothing else, I'm now sleeping deeply enough to dream, which I haven't done in a long, long time.

I'm looking for other tips to fall back asleep so came here via SparkCoach.

Hi,
My name is Mary Ann. I joined yesterday due to spark coach. For the last 2+ years, I have had more difficulty sleeping but l am doing better now. Things can change quickly for me where sleep is concerned. At this moment, I am very glad that it is not a major problem. emoticon

Hi Everyone! My name is Cat. A friend recommended this to me because it had helped her a whole lot sooo here I am. I haven't had a decent nights sleep in what seems like forever, it's probably been about 10 years since I've slept through the night. I'm on a lot of medications for various medical conditions but not for the insomnia. I just won't take anything.

I'm a Type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump, with bipolar and anxiety disorders, and migraines to name a few issues. And I get about 2 hours of sleep a night. It's very rare that I nap or doze. I go pretty much all day. My friends and family are starting to worry.

I currently started sleeping with the TV off and with a nightlight (because of the anxiety). I awake between the hours of 12 AM and 2 AM every single morning. It's really starting to annoy me. Lol!!

Thank you for letting me chat about this. I'm hoping this helps!!

My sleep patterns go from bad to worse depending on the time of year as well as how other health issues crop up here and there. I also then develop bad patterns of staying up and playing online games on my computer during those awake times. I echo what others here say about how this ruins the following day. I am putting this at the top of my to do list in terms of improving my health and well being.

Ironically, I joined this a month ago and my sleep got worse so I couldn't follow the suggestions so I am restarting over and I am hoping that by the end of this challenge I will be on the cusp of a new beginning in terms of sleeping and waking.

Hi, I joined this challenge because I am trying to get my sleep patterns back to normal. I seem to have had trouble with sleeping since I was pregnant with my first child over 6 years ago. I have had another child since then who is almost 3 and even though she doesn't wake me anymore I still seem to wake in the middle of the night and have trouble falling back asleep and even when I do rarely sleep through the night I am exhausted in the morning. Hoping this challenge will at least help me to get a normal sleep pattern going.

I had done this challenge 4 ish years ago. At that time if I slept for 10 mins It was a SURPRISE !! I went through this with a friend and team mate (Maryanngi) and am encouraging her to also come on back. Perhaps we are keeping each other awake by doubting if we'll sleep that night? I DOES make a difference !

My foot is in a cast,,, which HURTS quite bit !! I'll be in it for about 4 weeks,, perhaps 3 up to 6 weeks,,, hoping I'll go back into the normal cast. This one has 2 support stocking against the leg, foot. Thats making it TIGHT around my ankle !! Or the wound clinic can figure something out so it's NOT as bad.

I NORMALLY exercise 60 to 90 mins over the past 3 days NONE. Grrr cast ! I NEED to burn off the cals,,, oops cast gets changed on Weds. Tomorrow I WILL Force myself to do some yoga. Strangely I can do some on my bed,,, there's NO WAY I can off the floor. I WANT TO SLEEP AGAIN !! I had been til I hit a mania 8 weeks ago. That is much under control (thoughts, spending being impulsive moves) are all back to normal, during that yeah the sleep went OUT OF THE WINDAH !!

Hi...I have trouble falling asleep due to my work schedule and my kids schedule. I have to wake up at 6:30 a to get kids ready for school. Then go back to sleep till 12. I usually fall asleep around 2a. I have so much to do when I get home at 10 or so at night.

Hi, I'm Lynne and I joined this challenge because I have a bit of insomnia that keeps me from getting a good nights sleep almost every night. The problem isn't falling asleep so much as it is staying asleep for me.

Hoping that sleep is the reason for the lag in my weight loss... I am working so hard on it and the scale isn't budging. I sleep like crap and my husband and kids wake me up several times a night.

Joining this challenge today because I am working to regain my weight loss momentum. I know one reason for the slower weight loss is not getting enough sleep. There always seems to be more to do in the evenings than there are evening hours available. My nights seems to rush by and before I know it -- it's 1:00am. I am an early riser. so I am hoping this challenge shows me how to get things done and still get eight hours of sleep each day.

Hello,

I joined this challenge because I can't seem to get more than 6 1/2 hours of sleep. It doesn't help that we have 2 dogs one of them being a 1 year old dog that won't sleep past 6 am usually she is up at 5:15. If I try and put her in her crate before 10pm she is up even earlier. I also lost my mom in April and I haven't slept well through the night consistently in a long time. I am frustrated with my sleeping patterns and hoping to get some things straightened out.

I joined this team because I have my nights and days mixed up and I want to get on a schedule. I want to go to bed at a decent hour and get up early in the morning. I also have sleep apnea with q cpap machine, and it seems like I get no sleep at all and when I do I cat nap. I want to change this around and get good quality sleep and be refreshed throughout the day.

This goal is a big goal for me, I know I can do it though. Consistency is the key here and I really do need to get on a schedule.

Just thinking how would I go about doing this.

Hi - I joined this team because one of my New Years resolutions is to do whatever I have to in order to sleep through the night and wake refreshed (which I don't think I've done for years...) and I am quite sure that this would benefit my weight and vitality levels. I may not do the challenge to schedule - just do bits here and there as I have time.

👋 My name is Edith. I have actively been sparking for 78 days. I sometimes get up in the night to spark. I am an earlier riser inspite of the midnight sparking. But I know I need to do better. I get my ideas and dreams in the night, so I get up and jot them down and back to sleep without a problem. Plan to go to bed at 9:30. emoticon

I've been with SP for a while but have just joined this team. As I get older (67 now) I find that if I don't get enough sleep, I am not much use the next day. I also get up at night several times to use the washroom. I monitor my sleep with my fitbit and strive for 7 hours a night. I need to be in bed for at least 8 hours to get the 7 hour designation, given waking up and restlessness.

I hope this team can help.

Hi, I'm Priscilla, an American expat. I never, ever had sleep problems when I was young, but since entering my 60s it has been a struggle from time to time. I need 7-8 hours a night to function normally. Living in the far north of Europe, I know that the dark season is now making things especially hard. Hypothyroidism also clearly affected my sleep before it was diagnosed and treated. Generally I just feel that my body is becoming increasing sensitive in many ways so I try to stick a regular routine as much as possible. I've just never really appreciated how difficult insomnia can be!

Hello everyone, I just found this Sleep Challenge Forum through SpartCoach. I was thinking today that I really need to begin having a regular bedtime instead of staying up until midnight or later. Now, when I logged into SparkPeople this evening, the challenge for the day was to work on sleeping habits. So here I am. And I am ready for this change in my life.

I've joined this Challenge because I recommended it to someone else this morning, thinking they needed it and I didn't. I sleep OK I think - but I'm chronically tired - so maybe I could sleep better!

I've just been back and checked on my trophies - and I did complete this challenge back in 2013 - but reckon I need to revisit it!

My real name is Amy, and I look forward to being a part of this challenge. I have been a spark member for awhile, but I really want to start completing some of these challenges offered on here. Lately I've really been struggling with sleep issues, I can just not seem to turn my mind off when it comes to falling asleep. I look forward to seeing what tasks need to be completed each week and receiving the little spark trophy! =)

Best of luck to everyone beginning the challenge!

Sleep isn't restful. Average 4 - 5 hrs a night according to my Fitbit. Lots of restlessness/awake time. here's hoping this helps, although I've already tried most of it!

I'm Kristen. I am 27, have two young kids (5.5 years and 10.5 months) and a wonderful husband who happens to be a night owl and he refuses to change! So with my husbands sleeping habits and a baby my sleep is definitely leaving something to be desired most of the time. I am often groggy and exhausted and when morning comes I am horrible for hitting the snooze about four or five times before I actually get out of bed.

I am looking forward to meeting people and finding some tips to getting a good nights sleep!

You must nourish:
-the body with healthy food
-the heart with joy, compassion, and love
-the mind with knowledge
-the spirit with equanimity and self-awareness"

I am Mary Ann and I will be 71 years old next week. I have had sleep problems most of my adult life. About 12 years ago I went to sleep driving and I was lucky I just hit a couple of road side markers in a curve and that woke me up. No traffic on the road I was on and I had slowed for the curve before I nodded off. I wasn't hurt and my car though damaged on passenger side was drive-able. A lot of my sleep problems the last 15--40+ years were related to my work hours or covering call. I am mostly retired now except for covering Diagnostic Ultrasound call some nights and weekends and I rarely have to actually go in. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in December and started on a Cpap the last day of February. My sleep pattern is getting much more normal.

I still have to have a nap at times or just lay down and rest for a little while. To actually sleep I have the TV on. There are shows I record on DVR, certain shows don't interfere with my sleeping at all. I turn the volume down low. I have tinnitus so the background sound sort of blots that out. I had a stretch of 13 days with 6+ hours sleep and now I am on day 10. One night I never went to sleep at all, another 4 hours and then no nap.
