emoticon emoticon I love this time of year when i can see my tulips and daffodils bloom, Now my hundreds of yellow irises are opening up. I garden at our home here near Boston and then during the summer I have a small yard full of what ever type of plant can survive at our home near the beach in Plymouth.

Cheerfully,

Nancy

Hello. I am recently new to SparkPeople. I am happy to see that there are many forums on different topics. I retired last summer and I am so happy with the amount of yard work and flower gardening I have been able to do this spring so far.

For the past 47 years I have been teaching home economics and English. Those were enjoyable although there were times I would look out the window and wish I had the day off to spend outside.

I am a new member and love to garden. I have both flowers and veggies! I just planted my garlic a few weeks ago and it is sprouting up nicely! Last year my garlic heads were as big as my fist. I hope that was not just a fluke...

Rachel..it is fun hearing about gardening experiences..our way of learning..I like to experiment in gardening which makes everything so much fun.. Keep us posted on those tomatoes. Im working on brandywine this year..the best tomatoes and healthiest plants are the ones that come up on their own in the compost pile.

Hello Everyone! I'm new to the Garden Group!
My name is Rachel and I've been a Spark member since 2006. I've been up to 200 lbs., down to 145 lbs., up to 190 lbs, down to 181 lbs., and now I'm back to 195 lbs. Spark has been the only tracking system I've ever used with success, so I'm back again. Much has changed in my life since 2006, but Spark and my love for gardening has not.

My most recent gardening story/epic failure:
I tried growing my veggie plants from seed this year. Took care of them as if they were my babies. Many of the herbs, peppers, eggplants & squash sprouted then just stayed really small, but the tomatoes went nuts. They grew so fast but I had no place to plant them yet because we were still experiencing frosts at night. They all started looking pretty bad, then I got a fruit fly infestation. So I threw all the plants on the table out back and figured they were goners. I expressed my sadness to my very, very patient husband who encouraged me to go buy new plants at the garden center.

Meanwhile, my husband began caring for my struggling seedlings. He managed to bring a large number of them back to life! Now we've got waaaay too many tomato plants... 19 to be exact (after I gave as many away to friend and family as possible). They are just starting to fruit now and I'm holding my breath, as I don't know what we're going to do with all this fruit! I have a feeling I'll be putting a table out front of our house with a sign that says, "Free Tomatoes to Hungry Homes"!

For those of you interested in the varieties:
San Marzano, Black Krim, Brandywine Yellow, Cherokee Purple, Yellow & Red Pear Tomatos, Sun Gold Cherries, Early Girl, Pineapple and Principe Borghese.

ANYWAY - I'm happy to be here and I hope we can "nerd out" in the garden together!

Has anyone read the book "The $64 Tomato"?

~Rachel

DONNA, I LIKE THE CABBAGE IDEA, AS I MAKE A LOT OF SOUP, AND IT SEEMS WHEN I BUY A HEAD OF CABBAGE I NEVER USE IT ALL AND END UP THROWING SOME OUT. ONCE DRY, DO YOU JUST STORE IT IN ZIPLOC BAGS, JARS, OR WHAT? RIGHT NOW I AM DRYING SOME DILL. I THINNED MINE IN THE GARDEN AND HATED TO THROW OUT THE EXTRA! I TRY TO DRY ENOUGH HERBS IN THE SUMMER TO LAST ME ALL WINTER. MY FRIEND DRIED TOMATOES, THEN GROUND THEM INTO A POWDER, THEN ADDED THAT TO BREAD DOUGH FOR AN INTERESTING FLAVOR.

Im still experimenting. A friend gave me a book MARY BELL'S COMPLETE DEHYDRTOR COOKBOOK It give the how and then recipes to use. I had the best luck so far with peaches, apples, bell peppers and sliced cabbage..I add peppers & cabbage to soups..the rest Im still working on..Also made fruit leather with peaches..Im an experimental sort of person..always have ideas..not always know how to work them out..but it makes life interesting. Storing is so easy compared to freezing and canning..let me know what your working on. Donna

A food dryer dehydrates food=. I have done sweet potatoes

. beets, peaches, cabbage//and beef jerkey. Still in the learning process..oh, did tomatoes, and green peppers also. The food has a long shelf life and easy to store.Finaly getting potatoes planted and green beans to start..between rain and broken down equipment spring has been a challenge

Hi Earhtakitt, I had to laugh at your rhubarb bloom! Mine seems to bloom even as it breaks through the ground! I picked off eight blooms before the leaves were even 8 inches high! I wonder why rhubarb blooms so early?? We love rhubarb. I freeze several big bags full, and we enjoy it all year long In crumbles, muffins, squares and such! I am not at home right now - on a little getaway - but I can't wait to see how much my rhubarb has grown in he four days I will have been away! It is like a triffid!

Hi I am new but gardening if off to a slow start this year..not much sun in May. Good chance to pull weeds since the ground is so wet. We have our rotatiller back in service so we are good to go as soon as the ground dries some..We have red clay so it can be difficult..Hope to downsize since there is only two of us at home. Got a food dryer last year so am experimenting with that. Gardening isn't new to me..it is a way of life..

Hello. I am new to this team. I am looking forward to a bumper crop of raspberries, mint, and rhubarb this year, as usual. I have a larrrge rhubarb too. Any good rhubarb recipes? I hate to waste it. Thanks.

My rhubarb bloom. I was told it is better to cut it, but I think it's pretty.

Hi all! I am Joanne. I live in a small town in Alberta (western Canada). I am not the world's best gardener, but I do love to play in the dirt! Our growing season is very short up here as you can imagine, and there are SO many things we just cannot grow. Still, I love fresh garden veggies, and I love bright baskets and boxes of flowers, so I do what I can! I plant my garden in three places. I have a very small plot in my own yard; my neighbour across the alley is 94 and has handed over her plot to me in exchange for a bit of fresh produce as I harvest; I plant some potatoes and carrots out at a friend's farm. This means lots of weeding! I consider it part of my fitness regimen! I am really looking forward to hearing about everyone's gardening adventures!

I am Nell. I live in Virginia, but also have a pollinator habitat on my family farm in Tennessee. I just visited TN and made 30 types of seed baubles (local clay mixed with compost and native seeds rolled into a ball and tossed.) for the habitat. It snowed the day I left, but many of the seeds need cold stratification anyway.
I garden for butterflies here in Virginia as well. I also grow what herbs and veggies I can on the deck. We have many deer in the neighborhood and they ate absolutely everything in the yard last year. I just potted some potatoes that sprouted in my kitchen. Keeping fingers crossed as I have never grown potatoes before.
Looking for ideas for growing in pots. Flowers, herbs and veggies.

Hi everyone,

My name is Jen. I have been on sparkpeople since 2007. Lost 60 lbs., but recently gained some of that back. So, I am back on the program and recognize I need to stay on the program.

I still consider myself quite the novice when it comes to gardening. I have been planting a vegetable garden every summer for the last couple of years. I typically do a lot of canning with my harvest. Last year was the year of the cucumber. I have so many cans of pickles and relish it's kind of crazy. Anyway, I am looking forward to learning more. I am considering starting my own plants this year from seed, so It will be great to get some advice here.

Before and after of garden from last year (hopefully pics are okay):

Happy New Year: I am Barb and live in Central Illinois where I am an Gardener. We have a large vegetable garden and flower garden. I am a Master Gardener with the University of Illinois Extension and do a lot of volunteering. I have one award winning project I have started and have been working with for 4 years. I organize 5 speeches teaching how to garden in our rural counties ( the two smallest in Illlinois) then we go to all the food pantries in our counties and give away free plants (Veg,) and seeds, soil with pots (for container gardening) to all families at the food pantries then we teach how to take it from the garden to the table. We have a great success. Last year we gave away over a thousand tomato plants.
I am happy to be back on sparkpeople. I will get back to getting healthy and my new computer will make this much easier. Happy Gardening. Barb

A goal is a dream with a dead line.. We can succeed
