My name is Judith and I was so thrilled to find this team!

Over the years, I've rescued somewhere around 400 to 500 cats (I lost count at 400 about ten years ago). Most recently I had 22 cats (inside) and 15 outside feral cats, which I've managed to get all but two females spayed/neutered. Found homes for all but nine (some of the kittens died), and I only kept one of the kittens. The rest were already here - like the two that are 17 years old, the Stooges and Yin & Yang (Yin has since run off).

Am down to five feral outdoor cats since the males don't come around anymore with most of the females fixed. Luckily, I found a non-profit organization that pays to have ferals fixed and get rabies shot with tipping their ear for easy identification for animal control. I calculated I've managed to prevent around 2,000 unwanted kittens from being born.

Some of my pets names are:
Yin & Yang - brother & sister, he's black w/white and she's white w/black. Total opposites.
Larry, Curly, Moe, Shemp & Joe - Curly is all white with black only on the tail and one ear; Larry has black ears but white down the middle of his head, thus "hair" only on the sides like the original Larry, Moe has black all the way across his forehead like bangs, Joe was the last one born (like Joe was the last Stooge) and Shemp because that was the only brother left! LOL
Yoda - black w/silver undercoat (long-hair) and when you push down his ears, he literally looks like Yoda.
There's more but you get the idea - I make sure the name fits the personality or physical appearance.

Have also rescued four dogs in the past four years and am looking to adopt maybe three more to prevent from being euthanized - an Eskimo/Husky/Akita, a white pit bull and a terrier.

Currently, I have a Rottweiler/German Shepherd female (Bailey), a German Shepherd (Tico - he's the Alpha dog), a red Siberian Husky (Alaska - she "howls"), and a blue Pit Bull (Max - such a sweetheart! His tail is his most dangerous attribute.) All power breeds and all under control and yes - the cats rule the house! emoticon

I've been unemployed since July, '09 so keeping everyone fed has been a real challenge, but I won't give the pets away to someone just because times are hard. Once they are part of the family, they stay or go to a good home!

My son practices Cesar Millan's methods and has been developing a clientele quite by accident. (He has also been unemployed for only one month less than I.)

My unemployment has all but stopped so I will probably have to look into some local shelters for pet food for a month or two, but hopefully, a job will turn up soon.

Glad to be here and share experiences! I have some photos of some of the pets on my home page but my scanner quit working so haven't been able to download any new ones yet.

Welcome Sandy, we are so glad to have you and you should get Queen for a Day with all your rescues!!! That is amazing. I loved your stories and of course, my favorite is about your spastic yellow lab. I had to put my Honeybear down almost a year ago now and miss her terribly, so I love lab stories!!!

Hi, My name is Sandy
I have 3 (4) furballs living in my house. The (4) is because my husband and I work in 2 different states and have 2 houses. He just "acquired" a little kitten which is named Tribble- like me he is a sucker for animals. It is surprising we don't have more critters around our house. All of my animals are "rescued" so to speak.

Prince- Is the only one I intentionally seeked out. He came from the SPCA and was the one that had been there the longest. He was wild and no one wanted him. He looked so much like my previous dog "Princess" and I knew he would "disappear" soon, I just had to take him. He calmed down almost immediately.

Then came Target. A "Christmas" present. We went to visit some friends who had outside cats and I noticed they had a new kitten. She just made herself home with the others. Again. Soft hearted, my neighbor played on my emotions. In his cat voice said. "Don't you want me....I am here in the cold...Just think about all the snow we will get and I am little and could freeze." So Christmas Eve we were shopping for cat stuff. I was a real Target.

I am the third owner of McKenna. I would dog sit for her when a co-worker went on vacation. She was wild and spastic. She had so much energy (and still does) she Nips at anything. She has to have something in her mouth. My co-worker had younger kids and although McKenna never bit them, they were scared of the nips. So guess what.....yep, I became the proud owner of one spastic American yellow lab. When McKenna is not in her spastic mode, she is the sweetest, most lovable animal, that loves to cuddle and will look so innocent...but you can't let that fool you. The next minutes she is pulling things off my desk and ripping them to shreds. I have had her about 6 years and thank heavens she is spastic only 60% of the time.

So that is my story. I rescue animals. I am also know as the neighbor dog catcher. Seems like my house is the house all the neighborhood "kids" like to play at. So I am always returning runaways back to their owners.

Hi Kathleen, we are so glad you joined this great team and thank you so much for rescuing that beautiful golden. I haven't experienced what you have but hopefully someone else can help. I do feel that with you giving her continued love, hamburger, water from your hand or whatever it takes you will win her trust. Give her lots of love and I pray she will warm up to you soon and begin to eat and drink.
Let us know how she is doing.
Hugs

Hi Kathleen and Welcome to our wonderful team. I'm so glad you decided to join us.

I'm sure your dog will come around in time, patience is what's always needed for animals that have been mistreated. If she eats hamburger, give it too her until she trusts you to take something else.

Hope you like it here!

Welcome Kathleen, sounds like you are doing good now. Even if she eats a little at a time ,she will learn to trust you.I have not gone through this, mine was the opposite my Shar Pei , was rescued from a meth lab, and she still gobbles her food down. Hope some one will have some advice for you. Welcome and best of luck. emoticon

Hello, My name is Kathleen and I am a brand new rescue mom as of yesterday! Thank you Flowerdalejewel for inviting me to join this site. Last week I read about an emergency situation on petfinder about a Golden Retriever who was refusing food for over two weeks and they did not think she would make it much longer. Well it just broke my heart as we had our Golden, Murphy, pass away this yr. at age 12, and we were so missing a dog to love.
I'm a recently retired school teacher with plenty of time and thought I might be able to give this girl, Molly, plenty of love. So went yesterday (7 hour trip) and now the challenges begin. They believe she has been abused. She has refused dog food, dog treats and chicken. Molly did eat a few bites of hamburger and roast beef!! Also will only drink water that is cupped in my hand. She doesn't move or make a sound, but will let me pet her. She seems as sweet as can be. I want to give her a better life and am open to any and all suggestions from those who have gone through this before. Thanks so much! Kathleen

It's easier to say what we believe than be what we believe

Hi - My name is Tom.

A bit about myself:
I'm 45, I live in Saint Paul, Minnesota. I've lived in Minnesota my whole life other than college (University of Notre Dame, Indiana) and my short term military service (army reservist mobilized during the Gulf War - I served at Ft. Dix, New Jersey and Dover Air Force Base, Delaware). Once I was married and my wife and I had our first child, I resigned my commission.

Time for Questions and Answers:

Why do I have a Stormtrooper as my avatar? That is my picture; please don't ask me to sit while wearing armor - it's rather difficult. I am a member of the 501st Legion (www.501st.com), a group of Star Wars costumers that use our love of costuming and Star Wars to bring smiles to people's faces. A main focus of the group is doing things for Children's charities; my favorite tours of duty include Big Brother/Big Sister family picnics and Make-A-Wish events.

Who do I live with: In my house is my wife and two sons, 9 and 14. We also have a black Golden Doodle puppy named Shadow.

What do I do: In the business world, I sit at a desk and stare at a computer screen, most of the time. I am in Business Intelligence, which means I support reporting and statistical analysis. My current location is the system office of the Minnesota State College and University system; I really like my job and my coworkers and have been here 2 years. Previously, I was with an insurance company for over 21 years.

Why am I called the Crazy Vacationer? My family always tells me I vacation like a maniac. On a family vacation to Canada, we tried Geocaching (www.geocaching.com) for the first time and my children lovingly awarded me the "Crazy Man" award. When I created my geocaching name, it seemed a logical fit. As it is memorable, I've started using it other places. (Geocaching is a treasure hunt using GPS technology. If you have a dog - it might be a great way to get some fun walks in.)

What are my other hobbies: I like Star Wars (obviously) and I also have fun creating costumes. I'm also a Boy Scout and Cub Scout leader with my sons and participate in the music program at church. I sing in the Gospel Choir, a small ensemble, and accompany the children's choir. (Our church has about 10 different music groups). I also sang with a local symphonic chorus for many years. Before we were married, my wife and I many dates together apart: she would be in the audience and I would be on stage.

Why did I join Spark People: I want to lose some weight and I need to watch my blood sugars. Having someplace to track my food has been extremely helpful. Of course, being the BI geek I am, I don't like any of the reports, so I'm downloading the information and creating my own reports. So far, it has been successfull; my weight has been dropping (I haven't even started exercising yet) and my blood sugars are mostly within the target range.

Julene saw my avatar and had to share her Star Wars humor with me. When I replied, she invited me to join this group.

My current dog is not a rescue, though the Humane society was the first place we looked - they didn't have anything that would work for us.

We had to put our dog down this past July; he had been with us for almost 12 years and was a big dog: 110 pounds. Chip was a Dalmatian/Lab mix that we found at the Humane society as a puppy. He was a good dog, though he tended to bark a bit too much and shed constantly.

My 9 year old lasted less than a week without a dog and insisted we start looking. We wanted smaller, not as barky, and non-shedding this time. Since the puppy is 5 months old and is about 60 pounds, I guess we got 2 out of three. I think we're starting to see the end of the chewing phase. We took him to puppy kindergarten, and are taking him through obedience level 1 (so I can learn how to train him). He seems to respond quite well. My 9 year old really wanted a dog to play fetch and Shadow seems to do that pretty well. He loves spending time outside (we'll see how that changes once winter arrives) and playing with a ball; he'll take the ball in his mouth and throw it around.

OK - probably enough information for now.

Thanks for reading,

Tom

Welcome, and thank you for the information, on pet insurance. I will check into it. A lot of people i have talked to (now mind you not on here) have said to me oh i would just have them put to sleep i would not spend a lot of money on my dog.Well, i told them my dog is like my child, i do not want her to suffer but i do want her to get the medical treatment she needs,Its like well i ant spend any more money on them just put them to sleep. It seems that most people with rescued animals will do most any thing for their pet. What kind of daughters do you have? Tell us about them.Welcome and thank you again.

Thank you . Since we live close to a field where she goes to potty and behind us are woods. We had her vaccinated for snake bite. It was given in 2 shots cost 50.00 better then if she got bit a vile of snake venom runs 1.200 to 1.500 at UT. Vet. hospital. Our vet said this shot is so good that she might get bit and we might never know it, because she will be ok. Caroline

Hi Texas, so glad to have you join this great team. Yes, I would think rescuing a Great Dane would indeed be an adjustment. Good for you getting a rescue!

Hi , I'm Caroline we rescued our Shar Pei, 1 year ago the 22 of this month. We rescued her from a Meth Lab. She has gained 12 pounds and eats organic because that is what we eat, her coat is soft an silky, since we got her. Shar Peis sometimes have very coarse hair. She is very loving, kind, sweet, loves to play with her 2 friends Samantha, a German Shepard, and Lady, a Jack Russell. She can also be stubborn, which is one of there traits, but it doesnt last long. They had called her Sexy what a name! so we called her Lexy and she knows her name.It was love at first sight. I feel so blessed to have her. Caroline

Hi all, I'm fairly new to the site and just found this team. We adopted a Great Dane rescue last March and he is one of the sweetest dogs we have ever had. He is our first big dog and it's been an adjustment, as well as the fact that he is deaf. He has put on 40 lbs since we got him. He's the only one allowed to gain in our house. :)

Hi Susan and Celeste, welcome to this wonderful team and thank you both so much for having rescues! That is awesome.
I had a golden lab for almost 10 years and she was wonderful. We had a yellow lab (my profile picture) for 14 yr. She went to the Rainbow Bridge in Dec. I miss her so much so I know what you mean.

Looking forward to getting to know you. Join in the threads when you can.

Hi, I'm Celeste. I currently only have one rescue critter, a 7 year old tortoiseshell cat named Punky, whose smug mug graces my profile pic. She came to my family as a kitten from the South Carolina Kitten Action Team. We love her so much! She acts like a dog, meeting us at the door and insisting on being the center of attention at all times. She LOVES visitors of all kinds, and her best friend is a Highland Cow stuffie my family brought back from Scotland.
We also had a rescue dog, a border collie/springer spaniel mix named Oreo. Punky loved her, and spent half her life rubbing on Oreo's face, but Oreo never quite forgave us for ending her status as an only furchild. She died of hemangiosarcoma on March 31, 2008. We still miss her terribly. We hope that we'll be able to add another rescue canine to our gang soon.

Hello! I'm Susan, the proud mother of two rescued furbabies. Maddy is a four year old male Pomeranian and the other is Louisa (Louie) a four year old golden Labrador retriever. Previously, we had Peaches who was also a rescue. We were blessed to have her in our lives for 17 1/2 years! She crossed the Rainbow Bridge in May of this year. We are the third AND final homes for Maddy and Louie. We've had Maddy a couple of years now but Louie has been only with us less than two months. I volunteer with Central Paws Humane society here in Newfoundland. We hear a lot of sad stories and it really hurts to know that we can't help them all!

I joined SparkPeople about a month ago. I have to stay fit to care for my doggies and to give them the exercise they are so deserving of! I made the decision to join when I looked into Maddy's eyes and wondered what he would do if his Mommy suddenly got sick and died. He is my little cling on! I'm obese now but look out....a new me is in the making!

Hello to all. I'm Lori and the proud mom of a rescue Bichon Frise named Tucker. He graced my life 2 years ago after he spent a couple months with a foster mom from a North East Ohio rescue service called Marilyn's Voice. Poor Tuck spent the first 6-8 years of his life in a puppy mill as a breeder male with very little socialization. When his breeding mate died, he was dumped at the pound. He is still very afraid of humans but he's got a safe home and a warm bed to spend his remaining days in. I work with him, but he'll never lose his fear. Lately he does lift his tail when he walks around and doesn't think anyone is watching! He's my good boy! Check out my page to see a pic of him!
www.marilynsvoice.org You can also see him on page 2 of the Testimonials !!

Wanted to say "Hi"

I am an animal lover like you all. My husband and I at one time had 11 cats, 6 dogs and a bird. All rescues.

We fostered some and found them loving homes. Some of them went on to a better place.

We now have 7 cats, 2 dog and same bird. Ha!
If we could afford it we would have many more.

As I live each day,
may I do my part to make a
difference and touch one heart.
Each Day it is my goal,
to bring smiles and
laughter into a soul.

Hi!

My name is Bonnie. I live in Winnipeg, Canada with my husband and our furry family.

We adopted our calicoes (Amber and Alexis) as kittens from D'Arcy's ARC, www.darcysarc.ca/ in 2008 and soon after adopted their mum (Lunar) who had had a bit of a tough time on the street. She'd lost the tips of her ears to frost bite and was very leery of strangers. She's better now and is the most playful of all the cats!

Derek and I married in March of 2009 and soon after, adopted Dillon a tabby who loves to hug! He'd been a stray who had suffered kidney failure after ingesting anti-freeze.

About a month ago, Derek found a runaway yorkie and despite the lack of collar/licence, managed to reunite her with her owner. Ever since, he's had his heart set on having a dog...SO, we went to the animal services (the pound) www.winnipeg.ca/cms/animal/ and rescued a yorkiepoo who we named Robbie!

Robbie's past is a mystery. He's friendly and lovable and seems to react to some simple words (walk, sit, stay) but was very scruffy when he was picked up and had yet to be neutered. He's going in Monday for that!

Speaking of long-winded!

Pat, I welcome you also to this great team and so thankful that you were able to rescue that precious furbaby. I can't tell you how mad I get when I think about how people think it is okay to abuse helpless animals. May they live the rest of their lives in the bad place!

emoticon Pat. It's great that you were able to rescue your pooch. Too bad about the abuse, maybe she'll like men some day?! And yes, it's our pets who seem to be our real strength and true companions-with the excetion of us on the team! emoticon

emoticon Glad you joined. You have quite a collection of fur! It was sweet of you to take in mama and baby. It's funny how pets think their the opposite, dog/cat cat/dog. It's great they all get along.
