hi, i'm susan - i see several spark friends here already! i've been a walker since 1987 (well, longer, really, but in 1987 a neighbor and i started getting up in the dark while everyone else slept and putting in 3 miles a day - i've always wondered how many times we crossed the country over the years). anyway, i have started virtual walks before but not followed through and this feels like a good way to shake things up! and, with this world walk app, i found a walk in sweden, no less! and it is a side of sweden where i have never been (our home is on the west coast), so i am excited to see what is ahead. looking forward to participating here!

emoticon everyone,

I'm very happy to have stumbled upon this team. I have been searching for fun ways to form goals around Nordic walking - an activity that I use to supplement my other exercise pursuits and one that I thoroughly enjoy due to my strong roots as a competitive Nordic skier. I come from a very competitive multi-sport endurance athletic background and due to some unfortunate life events I can no longer partake in competitive athletic events even though I'm still quite young. When I reviewed this page and found the link to www.worldwalking.org I became so excited because this is just what I have been looking for in terms of having a goal to shoot for but not having it be tied to competition, a rigid training schedule, or excessive amounts of time or distance. My life now is one of moderation and balance due to a significant health challenge that I face each day. In spite of this daily health hurdle I'm determined to find ways to stay active and ward off chronic diseases through a well-balanced diet and exercise plan. Some daily Nordic walking in addition to being able to see some COOL places in the world through the www.worldwalking.org site not only will help me achieve this goal but will be loads of FUN!

emoticon for creating this team and I look forward to emoticon along with you all.

How exciting to have found this team on Spark People! I love how the cornucopia of delights just never end here!
emoticon
I was browsing on the Maintenance team, read a blog about handstands, clicked through to the page of someone who had commented (got re-sparked to keep going with yoga, and dust off my walking DVDs for indoor walking on days when it's not OK to go out for some reason). Checked through what teams they belonged to, and found this one! Yay!

I don't have any fitness gadgets to track my walking exactly, but I can track my walking roughly. I have been a regular runner for a couple of years' now, but am never been much interested in having monthly goals for distance etc. But, this has piqued my curiosity!

Welcome! I find it so motivating to watch those steps turn into miles (or kilometers) and virtually visit places around the world. I even save the photos of the milestones on the journey and post them too. It's my own virtual scrapbook.
Enjoy the journey!

Hi, So glad to have found this team. I have been trying to keep track of my steps with walking indoors and out . So far I have averaged 8--10k steps a day but my goal is to average 10-20k a day. Love walking. It is my favorite exercise especially outdoors in nature when the weather permits otherwise I do my walking dvd's. Anything I can do I will do to get my steps in. I also love doing the virtual walks because I am a stay at home mom and barely get out of the house let alone the state. Keeps me motivated .

Hi, I'm Lynne and I love the idea of virtual walks. I only get to walk indoors or at the park across the street which is nice but it goes in a loop so can get pretty boring. I think if I can imagine myself walking somewhere nice it would make my walks more interesting.

Hello team! I'm Emily. I've been on and off again with SP since 2009. I've recently rededicated myself to losing this weight once and for all. I don't really remember a time when I wasn't trying to lose weight. I love the idea of virtual walks. It makes me feel like I'm going somewhere (I know that's crazy but just walking my road or treadmill gets boring so seeing some sites along the way will hopefully motivate me.) I've checked out the website and I started my journey in Australia this morning.

Hope ya'll are having a great day!

Could you just use mapquest or Google maps? Put in a beginning and end address to get a route and the miles on each segment of the journey. Of course your route may be on an interstate, but no matter it's virtual after all.

I was wanting to create my own virtual walk, say for instance to start at my house and walk to my sister's house in Illinois, but on the website all you can do is choose a virtual walk they create. I want to be able to say if I had actually left my house and started walking, I'd be at destination X by today. I don't need to see pictures of what it looks like where I'm supposed to be or anything. I wonder if there's an app for that?

Hi Amy and welcome. I also find it so motivating to see where all my steps would take me if placed end to end. We began as a team trekking across the USA, but that site has been retired (lack of funding). Fortunately, worldwalking.org is a great alternative. I’m 79% of the way to Budapest right now. A few of us post our current location on the “where are you today thread”
Where in the world to go next? Decisions, decisions. There are plenty of options both short and long distances.

Hi All! I joined this team yesterday, but just now taking time to really check it out and thought I'd come introduce myself.

I'm 48, live in Arkansas with 2 dogs, been on Sparks off and on since 2008, more off than on, but have been back DAILY since Sept 9th and plan to STAY this time! When I do, only good things happen, so no idea why I ever leave. In the 2 months since I've been back I've lost 23 pounds and have an ultimate goal of losing another 89.8 to reach 150. I've never been that weight as an adult, so I'll have to see how I feel about it once I get there, and decide if I want to go further.

I am also on the "Fit By 50 Challenge" team, and while that team isn't very active, I intend to stay there because I really do plan to be FIT BY 50. I have 15 months, so that is definitely possible.

My main form of exercise is walking, and I've often thought that I'd like to not just track my steps/mileage, but do a virtual walk TO somewhere, so when I saw this team I knew I needed to join! Oddly enough though, I'm not sure where I want to "go". lol I plan to set my first virtual walk goal today and get started on it. I think I will start by seeing what destinations I can reach by Christmas and pick one to start with. I think this will be fun and motivate me to walk just a little further when I work out.

Hoodiecat, The worldwalking site has an option for groups, but then the miles are posted cumulatively. You don't have an online record of what YOU have done. I think going solo is best. I'm on the Danube right now about 70% of the way to Budapest.

I'm new :D I saw that Joyce is virtually walking the Pacific Coast Trail, we have a fabulous bit of that trail here in Oregon that I hope to visit in person this next summer! :D

I live on the Oregon Coast, am 40, paint pictures, do some photography and run. I've had loads of health issues that have sucked. I have filed for disability in the past and never thought I would have a normal life again, but lately I've felt better and have been working slowly toward health.

I like to run and do Yoga. Well, if I don't do Yoga I usually am too sore to run, lol. I'm new and this is my first post, sorry if it's in the wrong place. If it is in the wrong place, please just delete it. Cheers!

Welcome Rebecca!! You can also check out the following site. worldwalking.org/ A few of us are using that one also. I just started with that site not too long ago, and am enjoying it so far. They're going to be making some additions and changes to it (integrating FitBit is a big one), so I'm sticking with it.

I saw the sticky note regarding "Miles to Each State Border";
this is what I will use to see if I'm able to get through, at least, one state ...

Hi I am Ann. I love walking; its the exercise that I started out with when I weighed 400+#. My favorite time to walk is at sunrise. It's my favorite time of the day, so peaceful. Have a great day!

Hi my name is Joyce, I am 72 almost 73 and walking is one of the exercises I do best and stick with the most. I am already doing two virtual walks, one is walking for fun and I am walking the Pacific Crest trail and the other is World walking and I am walking across America. Challenges keep me motivated. Glad to be a part of the team.

Hi I am new here, and relatively new to SP, I am still trying to figure out the SP page. Terrie and I go way back, she was the first person I met on line, the fist day I got on the internet, that was 20 years ago. Time flies. She stumbled on me on SP by sheer accident and I had been trying to find her for many years after losing touch. So glad she found me.

You can call me Carmy. I am 61 years old and was born with CP. It slowed me down, and after our 8 year old grand daughter died I got a sort of "I don't care attitude. I gained weight. Then when my Dr. told me two years ago to lose weight or have a heart attack. it was discovered I was pre diabetes. No one in my family has it, so I was surprised.

I did a complete 180, I changed my diet, my attitude, and my life. I started out walking with a walker, which I now use full time to prevent falls. At first 500 steps was hard. I slowly worked up to my level today which is anywhere where from 1000 to 4000 depending on many factors.

Amazingly to me I slowly lost 40 pounds just by walking, cutting out all junk food, bagged food, boxed food and already prepared food like deli stuff, cut out sugar, fat, salt and cholesterol.

I am mainlining my weight, and have a goal to keep losing, just mot go back wards. I am no longer considered pre diabetic, however the condition that caused it is still there, that will never change. So I control my number solely by walking and diet.

I know nothing about a virtual walk, ad I am sorry I missed such an awesome site, that had to be fun.

I hope another one is found, I think it would be a great motivator for me. My husband, Jim, bough me a Fit Bit for our anniversary over a year ago, and I have put 200 miles on it. Hiking, and walking around the Pacific Northwest.

I have a dream of walking just a small piece of the Pacific Crest Trail, after reading the Book "Wild", and seeing the movie. I can only do a few miles and I am currently looking for a place that I can use my walker. So, hopefully this summer I can make that dream come true. We live about 50 miles from The Bridge Of The Gods featured in the movie, and each year they close it to traffic and allow people to walk across it. You have a half hour to do it. I think That is a feasible goal and I do hope to try it this year.

I have been married 32 years. Have two kids and 8 grand kids, that includes little Alley, who was 8 when she died. She didn't stop being a grand daughter because she has passed. I am also am advocate to stop drugs and driving. Her own aunt killed her while driving on meth. So I can get vociferous when it comes to drugs, drinking and driving.

I enjoy being out doors, fishing, the beach, beading, hanging with my husband, our 2 cats, driving, and of course walking.

Thanks, I hope to learn from you as I go, I have much to learn.

Carmy emoticon

We Can do this together!

Hello! I'm new to the team. I just signed up on the Walk America site as well. My goal is to get active and I'm targeting walking 10 miles per week. It is a stretch, but I think I can do it!

Hello! I am new to this team but have been on SP for a while. I need to get walking and am hoping this will help keep me interested. I am from Michigan. My main reason for walking is I take a group of 60 Girl Scouts to Mackinac Island for a week in August. If you don't know much about Mackinac island there are no cars allowed so it is all walking and lots of hills. The last few years have really been hard, and I want this year to be easy!

Hi! I'm an old SP member, but a new loser. ;) I'm finally doing the things I need to do to get healthier, rather than just talking about doing them. I walk at home currently, 6 days a week. I alternate mileage, depending on time and energy, but I haven't missed in almost two weeks now, other than my scheduled Sunday off. But hubby and I are talking about taking a leisurely walk Sunday evenings for a change of pace and scenery (and hills!) lol

I'm not sure how this team works, but it did strike my interest. I look forward to getting to meet new friends and to figuring out the basics for this group.

Love in Christ,
Carla

Hello!

I have been walking, either land or pool, everyday for quite some time. At 66 I am in better fitness than I have ever been and I am looking for more ways to do exercise. It does occasionally rain here, Florida, as anywhere else and I would love to figure out a way of "walking" for 10 minutes inside my house without really going anywhere but feeling like I have.

I have recently discovered on the Smithsonian Channel a series called, "Aerial America" and each episode is about 1 state. I am considering playing those episodes to walk to. I may actually walk for 30 minutes instead of 10.

My ultimate goal is to up my current exercise and, of course, to have no excuses allowed for any reason. If I can breathe, I'm going to be moving. Now if I could just figure out how to get this computer moving with me, I'd really be into fitness.

Have a great one, all.

emoticon Sashay 40! This is the place for walkers and runners. It has lots of options to help you stay on track. A couple of suggestions are to visit the team daily and to read at least one of the blogs. Eventually you will find some people who are talking about things that interest you. Then you can subscribe to their blogs. A great way to get your points for messages is to post on the team message boards. I hope to see you there.

Terrie has an email that she will send you. It explains all of the options available. Be sure to look into the Walk Across America at exercise.lbl.gov. It allows you to track your cumulative miles and to view the scenery as you walk across the USA. Also be sure to tell us where you are on your trek on the Where Are You Today message board.

If you need help or advice be sure to contact either me aka Virginia or MysteryRose aka Terrie or Yellow09Red aka Debbie. We're delighted to have you join us on our journey.
