Hi everyone! I'm Erin and I'm going for my first marathon again! I was training for one in May 2009, but got a stress fracture on the inside of my upper femur and had to quit. I'm aiming for one in October 2011, and plan to start training in May. Hopefully I'll be able to do it this time!

Hi everyone! My name is Jordan, I'm 30 years old, and live in WI. I've been running for a year now and have made it through my first running winter. I've completed some 5k's, a 10k, and a half marathon and also two sprint triathlons. I will be starting my official marathon training at the end of May for an October marathon. I'm excited, but still a little unsure of myself for my first full marathon. I just keep telling myself I can do this and through my training I can accomplish what I set out to achieve. I am looking forward to the support and advice of this group.

Hey all! My name is Carie, and I completed my first marathon in November with a friend. My husband has always been quite the runner, but I am new to all this having started to run a year ago. My goal is to now complete a second marathon in 18 weeks, but this time I am doing the training on my own. I wish I could train with my husband, but you see, I am a plodder. Yes, even us slow ones have hopes and dreams of doing the marathons! I am looking forward to learning from you all and doing some of my own encouraging along the way! My biggest struggle as a runner; getting the runs in during the day!

Hi everyone... I'm just taking a quick minute to introduce myself to everyone. I hope to have some time this evening to go through the whole team and get to know more people here. My name's Maricela, I'm 27 yrs old, 278 lbs and I'm a beginner runner... actually pre-beginner if that's possible. I think last time I ran was sophomore year of high school when they made us do the mile and even then I dont remember a single time in my entire life when I've done a mile without walking. I'm excited about becoming a runner. I'm doing my first 5K on April 2nd, plan on doing other 5Ks, 10Ks, hopefully a half marathon sometime in the late fall and my ultimate goal is do to the L.A. Marathon in March 2012. Big goal, I know. Big dreams, big rewards! =) I'm gonna work hard at it. Losing weight is definitely a big factor in this, I know, but my focus is on becoming healthy to then become a marathoner... the weight loss will be a very positive side effect of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Hi there, my name is Caryn, and I just signed up today for the Marine Corps Marathon! I've been running off and on for years, and have decided that this the year for a big run! I completed my first 10K in November, am planning my first half marathon in April (up to 8 miles now, feeling really good about it!), and now I am signed up for my first full marathon in the fall. I'm very excited and nervous all at once! Glad to find some company!

My name is Michelle and I am 31 years old. I have run two half marathons and hope to run my first full marathon on April 30th of this year at the Country Music Marathon in Nashville, TN! I'm nervous and excited all at the same time!!! I officially signed up for it last week so I am completely committed now! I just wanna be able to train without too many injuries setting me back (which happens to me a lot....I have a foot injury right now that is buggin me) and just "finishing" the marathon. I'm not too worried about time at this point. I just want the experience of being able to say that "I did it!"

Just finished my first marathon a few weeks back... 3:42:14... was kicking myself about being 1:15 off from a qualifying time (3seconds a mile)... :( but just found out Boston has reset their times anyways... So now I just have a good starting point. Hope to know off 12 minutes by the next race! GO TRAINING GO!

My name is Anita. My goal is to run my first Marathon some time before this year ends but I haven't decided when or where yet. I have two Half's that I have to focus on first. For my first Marathon, I would like to have my latest PT Julie Ellis to run at least two of the legs with me. Basically, the middle part and then the last leg. I am hoping to find people to train with so I'm not training alone.

Hello Marathoners! I have been recreational running (well running and walking) since 2005. I completed my first marathon in 2006 and now have completed 5 marathons and 5 half marathon races (and many more miles in between). In January 2010, I did the Goofy Challenge at Disney.

I usually run solo, but I got a couple people in the office hooked, and now we run 1-3 times per week at lunch.

My favorite marathon so far has been at Disney. It is certainly a crowded course, but the cheering is wonderful, and I am a Disney fan so running through the parks is great.

My goal is to drop some weight and decrease my running time this year.

I just joined SparkPeople as a way to track my exercise - and so far it seems pretty good.

I'm sitting at my computer trying to motivate myself and I just read all of your posts and I now feel like going out and jogging a couple of miles! Thanks so much. You are so motivating!
If you google marathon training plans I'm certain you will find several free ones out there. I really liked the Dick Beardsly (spell?) training plan from Grandma's Marathon and I just googled it and now it looks like you've got to register to have access now. If you can't find one online I'd be happy to locate a copy I printed out and fax or mail it to you. I like having training plans too, but I rarely follow them 100% but they help guide me to when I should put in some long runs and taper and then run long again...and then taper. This site is awesome too. There are some amazing runners in the running groups. I'm sure they can help answer your questions as you train.
Thanks again for the motivation. I try and run at least 1 marathon and 1 half every year and I haven't even signed up for either....I need to get going on this.

Hi, I'm Rachel and I love running. This is a new development since I hated running 10 months ago, and would only do it because I have to pass an annual fitness test for my job, but then I got pregnant and my doctor told me I couldn't run through my pregnancy. 9 months of not running made me realize how much I missed it, so two weeks after I had my beautiful baby girl I started running again (very slowly, but still running) and I now love it. So, I'm running my first half marathon next weekend, and I'm already signed up for two full marathons this year. And, my running has improved from before my pregnancy. I guess absence makes the heart grow fonder. My first marathon was the Bataan Memorial Death March in White Sands, New Mexico. I did the military heavy division there with no training (dumb idea!), but I finished and even though I didn't run that race, I was bitten by the marathon bug. I'm looking forward to be marathon-ready and racing later this year. Right now, I'm just looking for a good plan to train with.

I'm new too. I've been running for almost a year now and didn't enter any races as I don't want to go by myself. My sister called me up and said we NEED to run a marathon. So we're in training. We've entered the Seattle Rock and Roll marathon, and we're just determined to FINISH it, not break any records. Besides it is being held on my 45 birthday and what better way to turn 45?

I never would have thought I could run farther than a mile when I was in high school AND running track. (I ran the hurdles) But I LOVE running, I find I want to run even if I already ran that day. I'm glad to find a team where I can ask all my silly questions and learn learn learn.

HI all
I am a newbie to this group, I am going to be running my first marathon at the end of May. I started running about 20 months ago by joining a Learn to Run 5k group at work. I joined so I could lose some weight...now I am hooked. I most run 5-10km road and trail races but I did run a half marathon last year. This year I am turning 40 so I decided I would get the marathon in before the big 4-0h.

I am glad to be here.

On May 29th I will participate in my first Full Marathon!

Great to be here!!!

In case you want a story, this is how I got to this page...

This is spooky.... two and a half years ago, I remember looking up information on sparkers doing couch to 5k. now... i'm seven weeks away from my first full-length marathon!! I am at a loss for words... I never saw myself being a runner. I had to do it when I started going to fitness bootcamp because it was a matter of run, or get yelled at and left behind! I took up couch to 5k because I wanted to be able to run for 30 minutes without stopping. Then, I go to this little itty bitty southern town for a 5k and end up placing 2nd in my age group (it was a tiny race, but I have the dog tags as proof!). Six months go by and I run my second 5k. Then, I want to do a 10k, but its almost summer and they don't have any until the fall. So...I decide that by then I could be a half-marathoner. So, I run the Disneyland Half! My first half-marathon, and it had a time limit, with sweeps and all! So, I had to train seriously! I finished half an hour faster than I'd trained for. A few months later, I got badly injured on a hike. I couldn't run more than once or twice without pain for the next nine months. I took up cardio and weights, alternating 6 days per week, so I wouldn't gain serious weight. Then, one day, my Dad suggests I come out to a local marathon training program. I showed up to do 2 miles.. about 4 weeks later, I joined the club. Now, 24 weeks later, the rest is history. I've run 22 miles! I did 20 miles in the pouring rain! And just last Saturday, I did another 20 mile run, much of which is hilly! I'm a slow runner, I have my days where I'm not sure I can do it. But, I've done it. I can't wait til the big day.

March 20... here I come!!

p.s. I keep saying this may be my only marathon... that I might go to triathlons after this. But after reading how far I've come, I'm not so sure....

I'm part of a universe of possibilities, I'm capable of more than I know. The power of God, the power of love, the power of doing my best until it is something greater than I have ever imagined... this is what keeps me focused on my goals!

What I've done since 2007 on SP:
Couch 2 5k
Two 5ks
One half-marathon
One full marathon

Hi ... my name is Kara. I joined this group a few weeks ago but have not been active on any of my teams lately.
I am currently in training for my first half marathon in March. So far the furthest I've ran was 8 miles. Took me 2 hours (yes, I'm a slow runner). I've been in a rut the past week, mainly cause I'm sick of the cold weather. Taking a few days off due to the rut and work deadlines. So hopefully next week I'll be back to schedule. After this half marathon I will do a few weeks of recovery then back to training for my first full marathon in October. Can't wait cause I'll be flying home for it and will have all my family & friends there to support me for my first marathon. It's been almost a year since I've seen them and what better way than such an event.

New to the team, but not to the marathon. Ran my first last May in Eugene, OR. Ran most of it with my dad, who is my inspiration. It was his 7th! Planning on doing the St Louis Rock n Roll marathon this fall with him as well. Planning on really spending the year training so I can get a great PR, as my first one my goal was to just finish! Doing the St Louis GO Half Marathon in April, up to an 8 mile long run. Here's to a great year of running!

Thanks SwimStar! Not keeping busy is part if the problem! I get back home from my long runs by 9:00a and so I eat breakfast with the fam, then sit on the couch with my tea & go into to a "lazy day" mode!! LOL...I'll plan better and try a protein recovery drink/bar this week!

Hi Runner Jenn,

I hear you about being hungry after long runs. I've been trying to get rid of weight too. What helps me is hanging out with my running friend who doesn't over eat and is at a great weight, I tend to follow her lead as to what is a normal meal after a long run and then we are so busy after the race it takes my mind off of eating. My problem is often the fact I feel like since I ran so far I'm entitled to eat as much as I want...that thinking hasn't gotten me anywhere as far as weight loss goes. But staying busy and following my friends lead does seem to help.

Hi RunnerJenn!
Thanks so much! It's pretty hilly where I live so I'm really looking forward to flat! I am worried about weather, but since I've been training in cold, I'm actually nervous it might end up being hot there!

I loved Shamrock, VA Beach!! I did the half in 07'. It was my first so I have fond memories. It was very cold that year but it varies. Great flat, fast course. excellent choice for your 1st full. Good luck!!

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the team!

I've been running (seriously) since 2006. Started back up with 5K's and 10K's but am doing 2-3 1/2 Marathon's a year at this point. My goal for 2011 is to run my first FULL since highschool! Yikes.... I'm working on first loosing 20 more pounds and I'm trying to PR my half time! My biggest problem with losing weight and running is that I am STARVING after my long-runs. Anyone out there have any suggestions on how to curb the hunger?

Hi! New to this team, and registered for my first marathon, May 1st, Eugene OR. I planned to run it last year, but I chickened out and trained for a half instead. I am nervous, but determined this time around!

Hi there! I am a new runner (running since November 2010) and I am currently working towards the goal of running a half marathon on March 2010. I have completed two 5K races and just did a 10K race last weekend. My ultimate goal is to do the Walt Disneyworld Marathon in January 2013.

Hello everyone! I'm new to SparkPeople and new to the group. I started running on Jan 17 last year and ran my first marathon on Jul 10. I somehow gained 20 lbs in marathon training (how does that happen???) and have only managed to lose about 10 of them since. Plus, I still have the 20 I needed to lose in the first place. I'm back in training now - first for a 1/2 marathon on Feb 26, then for the marathon in Jul again - and this time around, I'm working on watching my nutrition as well!

I'm new to this website and this team. I'm training for my first marathon on 3/20 - Shamrock in Virginia Beach. I came to this site looking my ways to help with nutrition and weight loss. While I run a lot, I really am too chubby for my height :)

Hello - Dave here. I'm new to this team but have been running marathons for a decade. Last year I decided to add triathlons and this year I want to try an ironman. My goal is to run a marathon in every state - I'm at 20 states so far!

Hi! I am new to SparkPeople and I'm just trying to figure it all out. I sought out a tool to start tracking my nutrition. Before now, I just focused on healthy eating and exercise but I'm to the point I need to start seeing what I'm eating because I can't seem be consistent. I read an article at Runners World called The Runners Diet and I was determined to balance out my nutrition. I am running my first marathon in June as well as my first triathlon. I could really use some support in my weight loss. Running alone is not working for me, I need to stick to a nutrition plan along with my training plan. I think SparkPeople is my key to success.

Hi all. I'm Stephanie and live in Texas. This year I plan on running my first full marathon! I've completed 4 half-marathons, several 5Ks and 10Ks. I feel ready to take on this challenge and would like any advice and support this group can offer.

Hey everyone! I'm Wendy, or Freddie. I live in Florida, work 2 jobs, so literally 7 days a week. I have decided to run a marathon this Ocotber, and another early 2012 in Disney. The furthest I have ever run is 4 miles, and that has been some time.

I discovered last year that I do infact actually LIKE running, and did my first 5K. I then had major surgery, and was unable to run for more than 3 months. I have been mostly inactive since, but am looking forward to getting back into it. A lofty but amazing goal.

Hi everyone! Am back on SparkPeople after another long break, new years resolution is to be more consistent with my use of it!!! Have been running for about 6 years now, although my first years of running were a little faster than I am now. I have done a few marathons over the last 4 years and have 2 planned for this year - the first is Brighton (UK) which is in April and I still need to pick one for the end of the year (around October time). Training is not going too well so far, all the snow and ice has really held me back but am trying to gradually build it back up. Hope to see you guys in the other forums in this Team.

I'm newly returning to SparkPeople and also have a new goal for 2011--to run my first marathon! I've never considered myself a runner, but over the last few summers have progressed from a few 5K, to 10Ks and a half marathon last summer. It is truly addicting!

Hi new here... I've never really been a runner, but I trained and ran a couple 5K's over the summer (never thought I would even get that far). This year, I'm going in with confidence and dedication... I've decided to make running a marathon my ultimate goal in 2011! I tried to line up a few races in between to reach mini goals along the way... 8K in March, 12 miles in May, marathon in September... Any help would be appreciated and feel free to post on my page! Do you think it's a realistic goal or am I kidding myself?

For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Hello,
I have tried to run a marathon in 2009 but I sprained my ankle 6 weeks before the marathon. I was unable to run, and was on crutches for 2 months and 3 months of physical therapy.
In 2010 I tried to run a half marathon, but fell ill the week of it and was unable to complete it. Also in 2010 I started to train for another one but lost all motivation.
I plan on running one in 2011 or beginning of 2012 but not sure of which one I would like to do. If any body has suggestions I would appreciate it.

Hello All:

I have been on this team for a while but have not done an introduction. I ran my first marathon in 2000 (Chicago) and did not run another one until Kansas City in 2009. I decided I wanted to qualify for Boston before I am 50 (currently 45) and ran Chicago this year. I trained VERY hard and had a terrible race due to heat over 80 and blisters that nearly took me out of the race completely. I ran slower that 09 marathon which I did not train nearly as hard for. It has taken me a while to mentally recover from my Chicago experience. I am not giving up on my goal to BQ. I plan to run the Illinois Marathon 4-30-10. I just want to complete it running strong and regain my confidence. I will probably shoot for a BQ again in a fall 2011 Marathon.

-Would love if you would visit my spark page and say hello. Good Luck with winter training everyone. It takes a special kind of discipline and commitment...

Hi, I'm planning on running the Chicago marathon this year, so I've got 10 months to get ready, but I'm finding a bunch of different advice everywhere on the best training plan.

I've read some Galloway books and some Higdon books, and I'm not sure which to follow.

Looking forward to getting some good advice from people who have done this before!

Hello,

I was glad to find this team. I want to become a runner this year. I ran my first HM last Year in San Francisco. The Nike's Women s Marathon. I had a wonderful time with my friends. I finished the race in 3:30 because I walked and jogged. This year I am doing it again, but I want to be able to run the whole thing. But I Need help in how to train.

Hi - I'm new here... need/want advice on how many HM's I should or should not run before my first full marathon? I got all excited and started planning out races and scheduled myself for 3 halves before a full, all within a 6 month time frame, something tells me that's a bit insane....

At some point you have to own up to how great you are, how beautiful you are, to how much inner dignity and potential you have. Take repossession of your Self and you will rise to a level of greatness that has been yours all along.

Hello, I'm Lola. Been a runner for a few years now. Been talking about running a marathon for the past couple of years, but life kept happening. I just finished an intense nursing program, and now I'm focusing on losing the pounds I gained while in school, and decided 2011 will be the year I will run my first marathon. I'm excited and looking for any tips that will get me through while I begin my training. thank you

Hello all! I'm Heidi from PA. Been running consistently for about 4 years now. I ran my first full marathon this past October (Steamtown, it was awesome!) and am now looking to do one or two more in 2011.

Glad to be here!

Welcome AMJ! This is the right place. It's overwhelming when you read the resumes of some of the people on this team. There is a lot of experience here, and a lot of guidance to be given!

Hi all. I'm new to the forum, and new to using SparkPeople on a consistent basis as well.

I haven't run a marathon yet, but it is one of my goals for 2011. I finished my first half marathon this past September, which was very fun. I swore I'd never do a full marathon as I was crossing the finish line, then about 24 hours later it was all I could think about, lol!

I started running in January of 2010, mostly concentrating on 5k runs. Since I started, I've managed to lose 55 lbs. and taken my 5k time from 31:30 to 22:21! I'm really hoping that this next year will see that same kind of success in my distance running :)
