Hi, I'm Violet and I have done low carb before and had success but couldn't stick with too low a carb count so I have been experimenting. Right now I am trying to stay mostly gluten free but eating between paleo and low carb. So basically I try to stay away from Dairy but am not too strict about it. I am trying to keep my carbs between 50-100 a day as that is easier than 20-30 and seems to work. A little slower but that's ok as I am not trying to lose weight quickly as it won't stay off that way.

I try to keep my net carbs at 100 or below. Anything up to 150 net carbs is considered lower carb by most experts. My doctor says that 150 is too much for me.

Just work on changing a few things at a time, and don't expect perfection. Learning how to count carb exchanges and tracking them helped me in the long run. You don't have to worry about that right away but in time it might be a helpful strategy for you.

I usually eat a moderate amount of carbs....35 to 40 percentage of total diet on most days with a few no carb meals mixed in. The spark people tracker will tell you the percentages of what you eat.

It is amazing for me to realize how many carbs I was probably eating before I started to count carbs. I am still working on going lower carb.

Anyway emoticon

We can all relate as this diet is a huge change from the low fat, low cholesterol diets we were all encouraged to follow for years. I'm a nurse and it was even difficult for me. I had no idea how carb addicted I was until that time. You have received good advice already. My advice is to not expect perfection. The closer you follow the diet the better it will work and the more benefits you will gain but not all of us can jump right into this with both feet without some adjustment period. It helps to learn to rename things. We used to consider starches as veggies and they actually should be in their own class. You can eat a lot of low calorie/low sugar/low glycemic veggies compared to starches. Meat, fish, seafood, eggs, nuts, seeds, and healthy fats are satisfying and help you stay on plan.

Starting on low carb (high fat?) is a little scary, especially when carbs have been your main source of sustenance. The first time I tried low carb I really was not ready mentally, and I found myself slipping in a carb or two here and there, then here, here, here and there (I'm talking not about veggies, but potatoes, rice, all the stuff one craves before it is out of the system).

Needless to say, my efforts did not work. I could go several days low carb, then eat a "carby" meal (is that a word?) and gain all the weight lost back in one day, despite consuming the same or even fewer calories. I also suffered from cravings, headaches, body pain, etc., etc., but was too stubborn to LEARN. I just wanted to eat the breads, pastas, etc.

Now I am slowly finding out what does and does not work for me (I need to stay below 30 carbs). It is easy to maintain (for me) on low carb, but actually losing the weight takes a bit more finesse. I am HIGHLY sensitive to carbs, however, and so must watch every bite. Most people are not so sensitive and can include some carbs, so long as they have protein and fat with it. Not me, drat!

I wish you lots of luck on this new endeavor. There are many knowledgeable people here to help on this journey to health!
