WAY TO GO, Redpeppers! That is an awesome loss!

I am doing pretty well today after a mini binge last night. I decided to plan ahead with my snack for tonight. Having that snack already calculated in to my nutritional ranges helps me better plan my choices throughout the day!

I lost 4.5 pound in my first week. I wish it could always be so good but I am going to work for 2 pounds this week and then a pound a week after that. I want to just stick to the tracking!

After only 2 weeks on Glucophase (totally thought I was on for longer, until I looked at the calendar!) I dropped 5kgs and feel so great. I realised today how much energy I feel like I've gained since starting. I began the day like a champion, I even started my period (after several months of not having one). But later in the day, I got stressed and ate way too many carbs in one sitting (like an idiot) and had digestive troubles the remainder of the day. :( Lesson learned: portion control!

Happy day to everyone!

Thanks for the response GreenMama. I can't take metformin because it makes me sick. I was on an alternate drug that I can't think of right now, but went off of it due to risks for cancer that were found out. I know the more weight I lose, the better my symptoms will be, so I push on. Take care and God bless!

ANGELBETH, I can totally relate to everything you were asking if others could relate to! The tiredness, certain times of the month being more difficult with hormones, etc. and definitely kids taking a lot of mental energy, but it's totally worth it!

I had a yearly physical check up this morning (not the dreaded yearly woman exam though, just my regular doctor. I finally asked to start Metformin again after all my symptoms have gotten worse, and yet I've been able to moderately maintain my weight... I say moderately because I maintain between 147-154, but occasionally I'll have bad water retention and get upward of nearly 160 for a day or 2 and then it'll go back down to like 150 the next morning. I luckily haven't had as much of a problem maintaining my weight the last year and a half as I did back in 2008 when I was diagnosed, but its like my body traded that for other symptoms/problems; like hot flashes, night sweats, and my hair falling out and thinning :( I swear some days it feels like we just can't win! But I think it's important to keep fighting :)
Also, I'm hoping the Metformin will relieve all those new symptoms since it makes sleep nearly impossible at night when I get night sweats, but also help get me under 147 finally. I know 147 isn't a horrible weight or anything, but it is at the high end range of where I'd like to be since it seems any time I'm above 154-156 my cycles become more irregular or don't even show and my symptoms get worse. Plus, I'd like to be at a lower weight before we TTC again once I'm on Metformin for 2-3 months, since I know I'll likely gain nearly 50 pounds or more during pregnancy since I gained over 65 pounds last time (thank you PCOS & IR).

Daily check in. I have a hard time running the road for appointments and the past few weeks has been crazy with dad's eye surgery and appts for that and my appts and so much more. I am spent. I get tired so easy. Does anyone else struggle with this? I'm on disability because I could never hold down a job no matter how hard I tried between my Epilepsy medicine and my PCOS. I get sick a lot too. I've been excited to fight through all that, including 3 antibiotics for sinus infections and still lose 20 lbs. I am overly emotional today with my hormones so I'm trying not to think to much. I get in trouble when I start thinking during these times lol. I have a mid month rough time with my hormones and then the obvious week of eve's curse and torture. Basically half the month I'm good and half I'm bad. Can anyone relate? Some months are worse than others and sometimes I can fight through one or both of these weeks and accomplish something. Over all though, I have two weeks per month in which to fight hard for eating right and weight loss. This week I have been sick and tired and haven't been able to fight. I hate to say "Monday" will be better, but I have to get some mental and physical rest and I'm thinking "Monday" applies to this. My kids are home today. It is hard to be on top of myself when they're home. As much as I love them, they take a lot of mental power and that diverts from my me energy supply :-) Well thanks for listening to me. Love to all and God bless!

JULMUT, that's awesome! So happy that you're making that much progress!!!

This morning, in a few hours after I get some sleep, I have a doctor's appointment to discuss starting back on Metformin. I went over 3 years without it & thought I was doing OK because I was losing weight after having my daughter, which I had always struggled with. But the weight loss has hit a plateau for about 1 1/2 years now, and lately I've been experiencing more hair growth the past few months, hot flashes, chills, dizziness, fatigue, etc. and I'm worried my hormones are even more "out of whack" than I initially thought, or possibly my IR has progressed into Type 2 Diabetes?

I'll update if I remember & have any news to share after my appointment.

That's awesome!! I am hoping the next time I see my doctor they tell me "wow" in regards to my wait.

Now you have me thinking..is it weird that I won't see my doctor about PCOS until January 2013?

Good morning to you CRYS630 and the rest of the team!

I go see my Dr. this afternoon to have a CT scan to see if the tumor I have attached to my ovary is for sure attaching to my fallopian tube or what the status is. On Jan. 16th, I had unbelievable pain, bleeding and I was honestly "leaking" fluid of some sort. (Sorry that was so graphic!) I mananged to get in to see my Dr. that day letting them know it was an emergency and they landed up doing a procedure that was painful but it removed 2 full vials of infection. emoticon I thought I was going to be sick when I saw it...or maybe it was the pain. Regardless, they put me on some antibiotics and gave me some strong pain pills to help with the pain. The tumor was blocking my ovary from releasing my egg and that's why the infection happend. Around Jan. 21st, I woke up again to a LOT of blood. We're not sure if that was a result of eliminating the infection or if it was me trying to have my period.

ANYWAY....today is the day to find out if we're doing surgery soon, or what the next step is. Wish me luck!

Baldwin and Ellemimi I was on metformin for a while to see if it helped, but all it did was make me nauseous, so I didn't ever feel like eating right. Also there is the stress involved with feeling sick all the time. Him and I agreed to take me off of it. I'm losing weight without it because I feel like thinking about food and eating it. Metformin makes my mom sick as well. I was told by the doctor and pharmacy that it has that effect on some people. I would never be so bold as to tell you to stay on it or quit it. That isn't my place, but I knew I could share with you how it effected me.

Hello all! I started on Metformin last March and have not lost any weight at all. I was very sick in the beginning...meaning I would throw up every time I took the medicine. The Dr. said that by getting on the Metformin that I should easily start seeing the results of losing weight...and here we are almost a year later and nothing. I've lost off and on due to other things but I'm ready to be done with Metformin. When I've told my Dr at my follow-up appts. he just acts like I'm eating too much or not working out enough. One of my friends who was just diagnosed with PCOS and Metformin dropped 7 lbs in 10 DAYS with NO other changes to her diet or exercise!!!

It makes me wonder if Metformin is really what I needed. Should I keep taking it??

totally can understand where you are coming from. I have a nasty case of the blahs for a while now and even Christmas didn't help and it's my favorite time of the year!

I decided this am that if I was going to have the blahs, then I was going to try and do something about it. I ended up here and decided that I'm going to start my year off right and get my lifestyle healthy again. I figured out that I ate way too much sugar over the holidays and I know that contributed to the blahs.

I hope that you can find some way to motivate yourself out of your blahs. *hugs*

my dad is a pastor and he does alot of wedding that aren't his religion. He's even married someone in their town at the Star Trek station after their preacher didn't show up. I wouldn't suggest lying to the preacher either. I would call one and ask if they do weddings outside their religion, if they don't, say thank you and keep looking. There is bound to be one out there. Depending on where you live, there are also justice of the peace, commisioners, etc that can do it.

You could always get married by a Justice of the Peace (they should come to your wedding site - you wouldn't have to go to the courthouse). My father married my husband and I after he became ordained online. There are ways to get it done. I would not suggest lying to a preacher about it though.

I started a whole foods diet, which basically cuts out all processed foods and, I gotta tell you guys, I feel great. The energy is magnificent, the way I feel about eating is guilt free and (drum roll please) I am finally losing a substantial amount of weight. Of course, it is all too easy to regain weight if I overcome to binging, but it allows me to realize the affects my eating habits have on my health. I do welcome myself to the occasional processed treat, but I tend to enjoy it less because I know that it's doing my health no good. I highly recommend trying this diet! But, I warn you it is a life-long diet, it's not something for quick weight loss so you can eat whatever you want later in life. It's a big step, but I promise, you'll feel better from it!
So far, I have really started enjoying the addition of vegetables to my meals. The flavors are complex and the meals satisfying!

Well, I'm off to Chicago on business. Here's to finding out if I can sustain my eating habits I have been building over the month and my exercise I have been working to build while in another city. I did bring my Zumba DVDs, which I have yet to try and my hand weights. I also have my workout clothes. There is a workout area in my hotel, so wish me luck!

Birthday today so I treated myself to a Cold Stone ice cream treat at the mall. What did I do to help counter those 1000 cals? Well besides giving half to the hubby to share and chasing a 4YO around the mall, I kicked but with Jillian's new Ripped in 30 DVD! Yeah!

Of course, sweets are my worst enemy when I'm conscious about it, and my best friend when I am lost in a party, etc. Instead of completely avoiding it, ask for a smaller portion and tell yourself enough is enough once you've had that slice of cake and a scoop of ice cream. You'll feel better about it, and still get to enjoy the celebrations, too!

So, I did not wake up at 5 today, but I did go for my 30 min walk! I strength trained too; however, I only completed one set of each exercise instead of two because of my late start.
Tomorrow should be better!

Hello everyone! I hope everyone is having a great Sunday!

I did not do so well yesterday so I've been rather down. My son had a birthday party yesterday and I had some chocolate cake along with some home-made ice cream that my MIL made. I've paid the price for it already, but today is another day and this is another week.

I find it so hard to avoid sweets and I lack self discipline if I'm somewhere other than home. Does anyone else have that problem?

Just joined the forum today because I really felt like sharing my exciting news. I have never had a regular period. I usually have 1-3 periods in a year. Today, I just started... this makes 2 months in a row now! I never thought I'd be so excited about having a period, but I am just really happy because I feel life my body is reacting positively to all of my hard work. I would love for this whole period thing to become part of my monthly routine! ;)

So glad to hear it, ERICACEAE! Congrats on the weight loss too!

I haven't had my period in over a year now. I think it may be "normal" because of my pregnancy and now my breastfeeding, but I'm not sure. It could be due to my PCOS instead. All I know is I'd better not be pregnant again right now (I sincerely doubt it... all but impossible)!

Hey, just wanted to share some good news that my cycle is starting to regulate! I started off skipping months since I was a teenager, which I didn't mind at all! But in the past 2-3 years since I'd gotten bigger than around 180-190lbs, they started coming more often and lasting longer, until I was bleeding more often than not. Finally from July (at my peak weight of ~195lbs) to December 2010 I was bleeding nonstop (but lightly) every day, which is how I was finally diagnosed!

I started eating low-GI (following the "GI Diet" book), taking Metformin and spironolactone, and following 14-day on/off cyclic progesterone treatments (intended to help kick-start your natural hormone rhythms) in December 2010. The progesterone treatment triggered some horrific bleeding episodes the first few times (which led to me passing out on Christmas morning and spending some time in ER). Nobody warned me about it ahead of time, although afterwards they were all "Yes of course, you had a lining backlog, that's what would happen silly". But the treatment also started giving me some "breaks". At first just a few days, then 10 and 14 days. This month I had a full 18 days off - almost "normal"! I've also lost over 30 pounds since December and over 40 pounds total. I'm 10 pounds away from a "normal" BMI now. And hopefully a few months away from a predictable and truly ovulatory cycle!

Here's where I got the information on cyclic progesterone (my doctor was not a great source of treatment ideas but was willing to agree with my references):

Hey everyone,
This is my first check-in since I joined the group earlier this week. It's also my first week trying SparkPeople diet and exercise guidelines. My friend told me about SparkPeople so I thought it was worth a shot. I've never seriously tried to lose weight, besides on short-term fad diets, so this will be an interesting experience. Hasn't been difficult so far, besides the fact that I'm on vacation and constantly bombarded with junk food! But I've been good. I also feel like I'm getting sick, sinus problems, oh no!! I'll check in again after Mondays weigh-in, and I'll decide then if I'm a believer emoticon .

Hey girls, this is my first check in! I've been feeling really frustrated and angry lately about PCOS and what it is doing to my body and emotions. I'm a generally happy and positive person, but for some reason I'm just getting fed up with lack of results.

I'm on BC but that is the only medicine I'm currently on. I'm trying to change my diet, but not exactly sure how I should be eating with PCOS, anyone have a good book or website to recommend? My dr. has told me that bc is enough to "control" the pcos, i've thought about asking for metaformin or the spiro....whatever....lol...but I'm so afraid ...anyways, I"m excited for the support and encouragement in this community! Thanks!

Just thought I'd swing by and check in. It's been a while, as I had various family members in town to meet the baby all throughout the month of April. And on top of that, it was my birthday, and I celebrated it with various friends and family members at different times, admittedly over-indulging. So far May is off to a good start. I joined the bootcamp challenge and have gotten cardio in both days. I feel good when I get that cardio in, even if doing it is low on my priority list. I have to remember that when part of me says to just stay on the couch!

Checking in today. I'm experiencing some frustrations about stress eating especially at and just prior to work. I have developed a bad habit of wanting to get fast food for the meal I eat at work, and I think it's really holding me back. So next week I am going to work on figuring out what foods I can make at home to bring with me that I will enjoy.

I am also preparing to get in gear for my white belt test on May 21! In preparation for this I am focusing on making sure I stay hydrated with just water, eat plenty of good veggies and healthy protein, limit intake of sweets, and workout everyday. I've been working out 3-4 days a week recently, and I can already tell a difference! I seem to have more energy, and I think my muscles are getting more toned - even my husband has said he sees a difference! Victory!

Not sure about going gluten-free, necessarily, but gluten-free recipes might be lower in carbs and starches, which could help with glycemic index and insulin spikes. Of course, acne can be worstened by reactions to grains and dairy, *if* you have an intolerance! Especially if you're from an ethnic background that didn't traditionally consume wheat and/or dairy. It's all very personal. You can try cutting out one thing for a few weeks and seeing how you feel, or you could get tested for intolerance. I think acne is definitely something that a personalized eating plan can help with.

Of course you definitely want to stay away from sugar and simple, processed carbs. :P For the facial hair you could look into spironolactone; lots of people here are on it, including me. It blocks male hormones.

Metformin does not help with Hair. It helps with all the other systems but you need to be on spirolacton 50 mg a day to control hair and acne. This combats the male hormone in the body that causes the hair issues and acne. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I am really tired of all the acne and dark facial hair... I spend hours plucking it and end up scarring the skin by mistake when I'm not precise enough with the tweezers. The metformin doesn't seem to help at all with facial hair issues. Anyone heard that going gluten free was a "cure' for PCOS?

Hope everyone is having a great day!

I found this forum last Friday and am thrilled to have an outlet to deal with PCOS and learn new tips on how to deal with it. I was diagnosed 3 years ago after being off bc for one year. I was previously on it for 10 years or so. When I was diagnosed, I went from having 24 cysts to 3 in a course of 3 months- due to a new bc. Since then, I've dealt with the horrifying hair growth and weight gain. I too crave carbs like crazy and experience gains and losses in weight. I just started Metformin last week and seem to be doing well on it. I've read a lot of horror stories about its side effects, but I seem to be doing fine. I hope to to get pregnant in the next few months. We won't be actively trying for another few months due to my hubby wanting to have a job lined up straight out of college. I am 29 and hope to have a baby more than anything in the world. I want to get healthy first so that I can have a healthy pregnancy. Thanks for welcoming me!
