Greetings
I have been on and off the Spark for almost 10 years (mostly off the past 4 years or so) but with the late 40s came vision changes, hot flashes, new but not improved metabolism and depression - which I had never experienced before. That combination + a cross country move, new partner and new job led to a lot of weight gain (after keep 100 lbs off for 5 years previously) so now here I am doing it again. I thought this might be a page that I could benefit from knowledge about menopause, metabolism and doing this a little older than I was last time. I have a positive attitude I think and I just need encouragement to get me through this beginning phase when things can be hard. I am also used to see consistent loss and I don't know how it will be this time but I suspect harder. Any encouragement would be great

Hi My name is Paula I am 53 years old and I say old because I feel due to some pain from severe arthritis ...

I live in Utah with my hubby Duane and 3 kids well 2 are adults now but have physical disabilities and then one teenager that might make it to 15 next month.. I have had weight issues all my life. I was just told I am in menopause by my GYN doc. She is really nice and caring. I wouldn't be able to tell for sure my self as I had an endometrial ablation in 2003 so I have not had a cycle since then. Yay! So my cycles didn't just stop on me to give me any indication that I was in menopause but the hot flashes or power surges have not let me forget it. I am so excited to be in a group about menopause and over 50. I have no one that can explain or share with me because all my friends are older than me and tell me that can't remember what it was like when they went through it like 3-5 years ago .. how can you forget something like this I don't think I will .. my kids are independent to the best that they can be the teenager might be one day but for now he is learning where he is at in space like the kitchen space or living room space.. I have never gone through these "normal" teenage things and to do it now is loads of fun.. NOT.. Thank you for having me I look forward to learning how to deal with all of these symptoms of menopause through all you lovely ladies..

Hi everyone. I'm 52 years old and while I don't have quite 100 pounds to lose now, I started out at my highest weight recently, 230 (before rejoining SP) and my goal is 130, so I did start out with 100 to lose. Once this is gone, I will never regain it again.

Hi, I'm female 57, mom and grandma, and I have been morbidly obese since early childhood. I had 120 pounds to lose and I just reached the halfway point this weekend. I still have 60 to go, but after losing the first 60 I know what I have to do to get there. I'm reaching out for diet buddies, I'm pretty much doing this alone and I need to be around others who are experiencing the same thing as I am. I stopped making excuses for myself 5 months ago and came to terms with what I have to do. I'm serious, and if you want to go along with me I'm ready.

He longed to become Real, to know what it felt like; and yet the idea of growing shabby and losing his eyes and whiskers was rather sad. He wished that he could become it without these.

I am 54 years old, menopausal for several years (surgery induced) and on a mission to lose weight. I am happily married, 28 years, no kids but 2 rescue, fur babies. Working out is a passion and since having a knee replacement last September, I am finally reaping the benefits and can workout on an elliptical, Cybex and bike. I have to keep reminding myself that I am worth it and I am loved. It helps me to stay focused and consistent. It would be great to meet new friends and supporters.

Hello everyone,
I am 53 years old. Mom of 11. Married 31 years. Sick of being overweight and living in the shadows and caring for everyone but myself. Lately I realized that at my age I have earned the right to say no. I am ready to take control, treat myself right, and stick to it. My son and his wife, who live in California recently had a set of twins. It is going to be so hard living so far away from them. If I want to see them, I will have to get on a plane to visit. I hate flying because of my size. So this is one of the huge motivators for me right now. I am glad that you are all here and know what it is like being over 50, going through menopause and have a 100 pounds to lose.

Hello everyone. My name is Pat. I am 50 years old and in menopause. I also have over 100 pounds to lose. I had tried out this site back in 2008 but never stuck with it. Now I am older, heavier and have just been put on insulin for Type 2 diabetes. I have a great desire to get healthy but know I can't do it without help and accountability. So glad to find this group.

Hello all! emoticon

I came across this team when I SparkFriended Jenshaines! (Hi Jen!) And when I read the name of the team, I thought to myself, "Self. This describes YOU!" emoticon

I'm 54, working on what I intend to be a 120 pound weight loss. But I'm still counting the months until I'm "officially" in menopause. Over the past 2+ years, my body has fooled me a couple of times into thinking it had really, finally entered menopause, only to find that it still had one more egg to expel. [insert rolling eyes emoticon here!].

Even though I'm not "officially" there yet, I'm still experiencing the MUCH slower metabolism. Sigh.

I look forward to getting to know you all better!

Hello, I'm Paula. I've been here for about a week, but I keep forgetting to write my intro post. I've tried sparkpeople several times, w/ several names and every time was successful until I stopped using sparkpeople. *G* I just need to remember that I need to make a life long commitment to healthy living.

I'm a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother and a grandmother. I work as a register jockey at a large box hardware store. I'm into reading, writing, crocheting, and photography. I'm rather busy with my hobbies this month, as it's Camp NaNoWriMo, April session (writing) and Vlog Every Day in April on youtube. I'd blame that on why I forgot this intro, but I'm afraid my forgetfulness is all on little ole me.

So, that's me. Looking forward to learning about y'all on this journey.

I was a member of sparkpeople a number of times under different user names but since menopause, my thinking gets all screwed up and I let emotions get the best of me. So I end up dropping teams or leaving sparkpeople completely. But I'm back to stay this time, no matter what til I lose this weight.
I've set my goal to lose 100 lbs over the next 22 months. That might be wishful thinking but I feel if I can get my butt in gear, I CAN DO IT!
All encouragement and added support is appreciated.

Hi I am Cookie (Julie) ... just turned 52, just joined SP May 1st but spent most of the month lurking around and got started on June 1st. I thought this would be a perfect group since I fall under all three categories :)

I am having some menopausal issues ... some kind of scary but I am hopeful all will be fine. I am waiting on some test results (hopefully it will be within the week) which are weighing heavy on my mind. I haven't let it stop me though!

I am trying to learn where to post here ... you look like a very supportive group :) ~ Cookie

After reading your post I was thinking… I know dangerous. *LOL*

You mentioned 100’s of pound you lost over the last 20 years and how a lifestyle was not part of the process. I wonder if yo-yo dieting can be construed as a lifestyle, albeit an unhealthy one. I remember starvation and excessive [obsessive] exercising was a way of life for me since my mid teen years, proven by my 3 months with Weight Watchers that could not deter me from that hellish standard. Today, the dedication I gave starvation dieting and over exercising, I now give to healthy eating and healthy activity. And it just seemed so easy, to me, the expectation and commitment and adapting it into a way of life. But don’t let the positive words full you. I fought it tooth and nail because I loathed striving for that Hollywood body. Admittedly, a large amount of my battle stemmed from body image issues too.

As you mentioned too, today hypothyroidism (inherited too) and menopause thwarts much of my efforts in weight loss success. I am forced to accept that continuing to workout and eat right must endure this dry-spell. And I am told that it may last as long as I do, given that much of my weight issues and lifelong hormone imbalances are genetic. However, I did live a very stressful life; always working for start-up companies, long hours, juggling a zillion things at once, no vacations and an obsessive worry-wart. Over the last 8 years I’ve eliminated many of my stressors, including family, friends and associates who thrive on over-the-top drama. *S*

As for prediabetes diagnosis, mine dates back to 1989, but went unrecognized thus untreated until last year. Sadly, I didn’t even KNOW a diagnosis of prediabetes accompanied any PCOS finding. Shows how far medicine has come in women’s health, since today the two go hand-in-hand. *S* Still this combination contributes to insulin resistance and not weight loss friendly at all.

My wake up call came in 2008, after almost 18 months of being bed-ridden; destroying my carefully honed endurance, range of motion and ambulatory steadiness. Getting back on my feet was the greatest struggle of my life; and without medical or family/friend support. Except for hubby and youngest daughter, of course. This included my four year struggle in locating a doctor who would: 1) Listen; 2) Take my entire family history into account; 3) Hear my complaints; 4) Acknowledge my knowledge base, whether in support or beneficially disavowing. I knew early on I need a team effort not a one sided “Doctor-Knows-It-All” relationship. It was important that I too understand what’s going on in my body, so as to maintain good health for the rest of my years. This includes my success in maintaining proper nutrition and activity without the rewards of weight loss. After all, I have to do ALL the “heavy lifting”. *LOL*

I too take a multivitamin for 50 Plus Women, a B Complex, then extra B6 and B12, a liquid Magnesium/D3/Calcium combination, Flaxseed Oil (Omega3), Inositol/Choline, and Selenium. Been on Armour since 2006 for my hypothyroid, and Metformin, since Sep last year, for my prediabetes state. Due to my mom’s uterine/cervical/breast cancer, and diligent research on my part, I will never be able to avail HRT in my life. At least not as of this writing. So aging gracefully, naturally is also part of my lifestyle.

Overall, I am finally feeling a bit more “whole” then I have in a very long time, even before my health crisis in 2006. I’ve also slowed down considerably: 1) no more getting everything done in one day, I spread it out over the week, month, year; 2) No more everyone first and me last – it’s a compromise; 3) I do enjoyable things along side the life necessity things; 4) I stop and smell the flowers now; and most importantly, 5) I cry freely.

Also, as you have mentioned… yes, we are in this to win. Wooo-Hooo!

Hi Kitty :) You and I are at the same starting gate, and I'm cheering you on! Your weight loss success back in 2007 is proof positive that you can do it, but like many of us the maintenance and commitment to a permanent lifestyle change is the banana peel we tend to slip on. I'm a Black Belt dieter, proving time and time again that I CAN LOSE WEIGHT. Problem is I'm either on the bus or off the bus - dieting or not dieting - and the 100's of pounds I've gained and lost over 20 years without follow through on life style change has been counter-productive. Menopause for most of us makes our body go haywire. I could power a small village with hot flashes. Hair changed texture, skin became funky, body parts no longer defied gravity. Sleep became illusive, fat moved around to places that upped the odds for stroke and heart attack. Fat cells turned to cement and it was hard to budge them. I began to lose muscle tone, osteoarthritis began to take its toll on knee and hip joints and the weight jut piled on. Color me depressed, oh yeah. When the pre-diabetic diagnosis hit a while back I had my wake-up call and made the connection that while my health right now is not a life sentence it could be if I don't choose to get my body moving and stick with a plan to slowly lose weight and make lifestyle/diet changes that are permanent. Guess you could say I've been scared straight and I'm embracing Spark like a life line but also kinda jazzed about it! While I don't endorse my regimen for everybody, I began with a good multi-vitamin, a Calcium supplement and vitamin C. I take Biotin for hair and nails, Omega 3 for heart health and skin, and I do believe it is having positive effect. As for Thyroid don't under-estimate its impact on weight. I had a benign tumor on my thyroid gland at 25 and 95% of was removed (the surgical norm back then). That 5% has continued to sputter out bits of hormone which fluctuates, and a single dose of Synthroid may or may not have the efficacy required on any given day. The same is conceivable for hypo-thyroidism. Make sure your CBC tests for T-3 (triiodothyronine) as well as T-4, many don't. Stay on your doctor about this so the Rx is adjusted if it needs to be. Sending you good diet juju and adding you as a friend. Pen-pal me if you'd like. We're in it to win it! emoticon

Hi everyone,

I justed joined this team, looking for some goo ideas about tackling all these life changes. I will be turning 50 in November, and have already had a few hot flashes. Have some of the other symptoms, including not sleeping well, skin changes, wonky body thermostat.

I joined Spark 5 years ago, lost 60 pounds, halfway to my goal. Then I put it back on. Luckily I stopped before I gained anymore. My body was really sending me signals saying "this is just too much".

So I've been starting over the last few weeks. I have low thyroid, but use meds for it, so I hate to use it for an excuse for the weight. But I do think it affects my metabolism, even with the meds.

Anyway, my primary goal is to eat healthier, simpler, saner meals. Less processed food is a main focus. If the weight loss follows, great. I want to be able to walk more and not feel like my legs want to fall off. There's much more of course, but these are some of the main ideas I have.

Look forward to reading the messages and getting to know everyone!

Hi Everyone,
My name is Gerri and I live in Oklahoma where the sun is about to burn everything up. I am 56 and I go through the most worrisome symptoms with menopause. I am miserable for 2 weeks out of every month..I have been overweight all my life. I did lose a bunch of eight when I was in my 20's but trying to live the so called "Good Life", it took 5 years to put it all back on and more. I have osteo-arthritis, toxic neuropathy, & COPD, My Doctor told me 2 weeks ago that if I didn't change my lifestyle ...loose weight and quit smoking I would not live to see 65. And that's why I'm here. I want to live a few years past believe 65. I want to attend many more birthday's I want to become a great grandmother... and I want to be able to enjoy life without. I am not strong enough to do both things at one time but with the help of the electronic cigarette and spark people I have a good start.

Hi! I'm Emily. I joined Spark People in December and am having difficulty keeping off any weight I lose. I am also having difficulty staying asleep at night.

One of the ladies I work with asked me quietly on Friday if I had gone through menopause already and I said no....still regular as clockwork with some subtle differences.

She said insomnia and an inability to get good sleep was her first symptom along with weight gain, even though she didn't increase her eating. And that might account for the subtle differences to.

So here I am.

Hi everyone. I'm Chai from Ohio/Florida. I am so sick and tired of being sick and tired. Six years ago I was thin - 140-145 lbs in a size 6/8. It took me 2 years and 150 lbs to get there to get there and I kept it off for 5 years. Then I had an accident and I used the pain meds and depression as my excuse to eat my way back to being fat. I kept telling myeself, "It is OK. I did it before, I'll do it again." But when I finally stopped my regin of terror on my body (I made sure I didn't gain as much as I started - by only 10 lbs mind you) I found it wasn't easy to lose the weight this time. I'm finding that menopause and pain meds cause weight gain AND impede weight loss. Double whammy! Now I'm just struggling to lose the 110 lbs I still have left to lose.

Can I ask for your help and support now?!? Thanks team!

Let me explain the name. Other than the fact that Winnie the Pooh was the first cartoon character I fell in love with and saw on the big drive-in screen,
it's also a nickname from my mom.
In our household when you were tired, you were pooped. I was always tired and so Mom would call me Poopy. Nothing to do with #2 emoticon
