Hi everyone, I'm Valerie. I started SP in May, I've been doing lots of cardio and little strength training. I'm wanting to change that to lots of strength training and little cardio. I want to feel stronger and be stronger. emoticon

Hello everyone. Im new to SP and this team. Id love to keep my current size (about 10 I guess) but Id want to fill it up with more muscle tone than fat. Im weak all over. Typical pear shape. Trying to do stuff at home mostly as Im way too shy to go to the gym. I try to find my way around, but have motivation and consistency issues :) Would love to have someone to kick my butt. I guess I also have food problem- dairy is as close to animal products as I can get, adicted to sugar... oh and I just cant stand more than 5mins cardio. Greets and cheers to everyone.

Hello! My main way of exercise so far has been running and while I still enjoy doing that I wanted to add in some strength training so I can gain some muscle. I'm happy with the size I am but I have more fat than muscle so I want to change that around. I plan on using this team to teach me some things that can help me with that.

Hey guys,
My name is Melinda, I'll be 25 in less then a month. I got 40 lbs to lose to be at a healthy weight according to my doctor.I use to stay underweight, but as I started talking daily medications for some illnesses, I started to pack on the pounds. I was use to a high metabolism but never stopped eating my portions when it started to slow down. In a period of 4 years I gained 65 pounds. I use to eat all kinds of sweets and outragous portion sizes for everything. But as of May I became vegan and have changed my diet drastically. I haven't lost weight yet, but I stopped gaining so for me thats progress. Caffeine is like a drug for me, its a daily battle because I can easily go through a 24 pack in 1 day. I've cut back to (on average) 4, 12oz cans a day.
At one point a couple of years ago, I was going to the gym and was weight training for the possibility of attending the police academy. I absolutely loved going to the gym and lifting weights, I pushed myself everyday to do alittle better then I did before.. and I really wish I could feel that way again. Even though I passed my exams I was never called to go. So that ship has sailed and passed. But I kept training afterward until I pinched my sciatic nerve, my muscle was so tight that it took 8 months for it to finally relax enough to let go (stop pinching). So I just ended up never going back to the gym and now that I want too, I cant afford it. The only "weights" I have is a 5 lb medicine ball and 3 lb dumbells.

When I think of how I want to look, when my ideal weight is lost .. you know when this isnt much of a struggle anymore its a lifestyle.. I want to look like (as the group name says) Iron Maiden. lol I want the definition in my arms, and legs. I've never been one for thinking women look good with defined abs, but as long as its slim/smooth instead of a bulge I'll be happy lol.
I wanna look like a trainer, or amateur body builder (but nothing as seriously defined as them). I want people to think "Wow she's strong, she can do anything" when they look at me. That says a lot to me with my illnesses. I want people to see I'm a fighter, that I dont let things run me over.
I'd like to get from this group, is advice on how to achieve that goal with what I have, some motivation and ppl who push me. And eventually when I'm stronger, I'd like advice on fully weight training (to get that body builder look - cause I know I gotta take it slow at first), and just support in general.
If people would like to be friends, or email pals, whatever, please feel free to add/email me.

Hi!! So strength training is what I hate most about exercising. Cardio, I love and can do all day every day. But the moment someone mentions, weights, push-ups, squats, etc, I cringe! Because of this I can not (and never could) do a normal push-up or pull-up and squats and lunges are extremely challenging.

I'm hoping to get tips, information and motivation from this group. Right now I am doing the Brazil Butt Lift workout which seems like a mix of cardio and strength. I have about 2 weeks left of this and hope that by the time I'm done with that, I have gathered enough information here to start a muscle-building program!

Height: 5'7"

I share my food tracker for those interested (any feedback appreciated!)

Hi, my name is Rachel. I guess you can say that I am a little new to strength training. I have done strength training years ago, so I guess you can say I am starting over. What I have been doing for strength training so far is bodyweight training and some kettlebells. I really can't afford to go to a gym at this point. I look forward to learning from everyone on this team and I get some motivation while I am at it!
Talk to you all later!

Hi There -

I am coming back to strength training after a couple of years absence. I quit when I decided that being over 50 meant that I had to settle for frumpy. I am tired of frumpy. I want to build my body strong once more. I want to push myself and get into the greatest shape I have every been. I am tired of thinking that this is as good as I can get. I want to still turn heads, including my own.

I joined this team for suggestions, friendship and motivation and I hope I can do the same for anyone to wishes it too.

Hi I'm Pam and I live in Cedar Rapids Iowa. I'm a member of the local YMCA and have been strength training there for about 4 years now and it's my favorite part of my program. I am a frequent participant in Les Miles BodyPump going there at least 2x per week. I also do a number of low impact cardio including walking swimming elliptical and cycling. I have a goal to complete a sprint triathlon in the next year or so. The main delay is in getting a decent bike to complete it on. I'm unemployed so money is an issue. I am highly motivated and if you want to ask me something feel free.

Hi all, I'm Liz. I live in New York and just graduated from college.

I'm relatively new to strength training. I mainly use dumbbells, and I'm only at 5lbs right now, but I'm looking to increase the weight and build some muscle!

Hello everyone!
I went to the gym yesterday...the first time in years! I mainly did cardio...looked around the weight machines, to see what was there. I did 3 sets of 10 on the chest press machines..and man, are my delts sore today!! Guess I should use the vertical handles, so my shoulders don't do most of the work.
Anyhoo! Nice to meet y'all!! emoticon

Hi, new person here! I just started going to the gym in March and already I'm doing cardio daily and weight lifting 6 days a week. I work with a trainer on one of those days, so I'm learning a lot of new ideas. This is actually my second gym and second trainer as the first set didn't want to work with me for muscle hypertrophy, but only for toning. My new trainer is awesome, though.

HI all,

I'm brand new to both SP and to strength training. I actually have no idea what I'm doing. :) I need to lose fifty pounds, but I like to lift (okay, "lift" is probably a stretch for what I can do!)... and I would love to live in a body that looked like Ilaria Montagnani's! ( blog.powerstrike.tv/wp-content/uploa
ds
/2011/06/20080313_ilaria_0118-2.jpeg
)

I'm naturally pretty strong and I pack muscle on easily when I workout, so I thought I might just go all in. I'm a little fuzzy about how to design a program for me, but I'm only just beginning the research. In the meantime, I'm strength training to my 10-rep max 3 times a week, doing cardio as much as I can, and trying to eat high- protein but low-calorie.

Nice to "meet" everyone!

Hi all! I"m not exactly "new to strength" - I was seriously into body building about a quarter of a century ago - but that all went south so long ago I barely remember it (except for the week's routine...chest, back and biceps, other days were legs, shoulders (?) and triceps, abs every day.) Anyway, here we are at today - a Spark Buddy suggested this might be a good place for me to hang out and stay out of trouble.

Seriously, I hadn't given much thought to strength training for a long time. Until a couple years ago, I worked as a landscaper full time, and I was as muscled up as I'd ever been. Recently, though I've noticed that things I used to do easily are a lot more difficult than I remember them being - I did a couple flexes in the mirror, and not much moved. :(

My biggest challenges, I think, are going to be working out at home (I live far from anything resembling a weight room) and not going too heavy too fast. All those little connectors are fast asleep.

I look forward to virtually working out with the team, and getting to know you all.

Karen

Pray to God, but row for shore.

I took about 1/2 a year off of most strength training due to a labrum injury in my right shoulder from softball. I just started back adding heavier weights to my circuits - I'm not looking to bulk up just add the definition back to my arms and legs.

I'm new to this team and to weight lifting, so just checking threads out. I'm in a learning phase so I have been doing research to get to the truth about weight lifting. I have learned some things I didn't know and still looking for more answers.

I have been doing Callanetics and walking 5 to 6 days a week. I eat as clean as I can but, I do eat eggs, fish and chicken. I have lost almost 40 lbs over the past 4 1/2 years and have 35 more to lose, but I want that 35 to be FAT. I want to build and repair my muscles. I have a Bowflex so I have to that for my weight lifting.

I'm looking forward to learning and sharing with y'all.

Hugs,
Charlie

Hello. I became interested in strength training after a few months of physical therapy for my neck. I was prescribed a number of resistance band and weight machine exercises to strengthen my shoulder and upper back muscles and I found I enjoyed the burn and the challenge. Since I began physical therapy, my neck has greatly improved so I am anxious to keep going and to try more.
I, like most people, am short on time and money, so if anyone wants to recommend a simple strength routine at home with free weights, I'd be much obliged. So far I've been searching for videos on YouTube. :)

I want shape in my arms! Been hitting the cardio hard and am ready to combine strength training to get the shape I want. It's been a while since my involvement in CrossFit, which really helped with the toning, but I can't get to CrossFit for now. In the meantime, I'm going to try using weights at home and in the gym.

Hi - My name is Loretta. I live is S. Portland, Me with my 2 cats . Although I am not new to strength training, I find it difficult because of my age(66yrs) and weight(252 lbs). I did manage to lose weight over the holidays between Thanksgiving and New Years. Only 3 lbs but still an accomplishment for me.

Hey all!
Just joined this group, good to meet everyone.
I've always been sort of 'skinny fat' my whole life, and I'm hoping that talking with you guys will help me get motivated to finally add in some weight training to my workouts and finally get stronger.
I'm always a bit self conscious when I go to the gym because of all the intimidating looking weight machines, so I just end up on the treadmill. But that stops now, wish me luck! :D

Hey everyone!
My name is Maggie and I am a newbie to both SP and to strength training. I have done, in the past, just cardio. Actually, I think I should be dubbed cardio queen for the amount of cardio I do each week. But, I noticed that it wasn't giving me the results I wanted. So, after getting The New Rules of Weightlifting for Women', I decided that I should begin strength training in order to become strenger and gain some muscle and lose that stubborn belly fat that seems to be clinging to my abs! I only have four lbs to lose but I want to really gain some muscles before I finally go away to college next year (I was at a two year institution in order to save some $$...). Any advice? I have a routine mapped out here:
Seated Rows 3 sets of 10
Chest Press 3 sets of 10
Reverse Ab Curl 3 sets of 10
Squat 2 sets of 15 (or 2 sets of 10 w/ barbell)
Incline Push up 2 sets of 10
Pull down 2 sets of 15
Lunges 2 sets of 15
Crunches w/ weight 3 sets of 15
Bicep Curl 3 sets of 10
Lateral Raises 2 sets of 15
Assisted Pull Ups 2 sets of 10
Tricep Extention 2 sets of 15
Plank 2 sets of 30 seconds
Calf raises 2 sets of 15

What do you think? I will be doing this three times a week on non consecutive days...

I just joined Iron Maidens. I have been a SP member for a while and am really getting serious now on my fitness and health. I just need to lose about 15 pounds or so but I really need to get in shape. I started lifting weights and am trying to lead a clean eating life. I don't eat totally clean but I am trying to do the best I can with it. I joined a gym and have been going about 5 days a week. I joined this team for support. Most of my friends are overweight and aren't health conscience so I sometimes find it hard to stay motivated. That's why I am here and hopefully I can help motivate someone else in return.

Whereever you are, Be there!

Good Evening Everyone!

My name is Melissa. I'm a former member of SparkPeople and I've decided that it's time to come back. I've tried other sites and methods of tracking my progress but nothing compares to Spark. I wanted to stay honest, so I deleted my previous account and started over this morning.

I've got about 25-30 pounds that I would like to lose. My program will consist of cardio and strength training combined with working toward a more healthy diet. I have some goals to work toward to help me stay on track. I've got the Aloha Run (8miles) & Warrior Dash (3 mile obstacle course) coming up in March.

I love working out with free weights and I am looking forward to getting to know you guys and working toward our goals together.

Hi everyone! Just joined Iron Maidens and I am looking forward to chating with everyone. I'm not new to weight training, but I'm getting serious about weight training again. I brought a weight vest and not sure how to use it properly, i.e, do I wear it while working out, do I wear it while doing housework? If anyone have experience with a weight vest, please give me some pointers.

Thanks,

Slim

Hi everyone..thanks for your comments Gail! Toby..nice to meet you! I haven't been around this team much since I joined a couple of weeks ago. Last Friday I had an open surgical biopsy on one of my breasts. Everything came out fine but I have been a little pre-occupied with it! I also couldn't lift weights for a week... per Dr's orders. But I am back now, feel stronger than ever, and ready to get back on my regular strength training regimine!! I hope to be stopping in here and posting on a regular basis!!

Thanks Gail!
I plan to do lots of shovel work this fall. That involves a lot of twisting and core work as well as upper body work. Any suggestions for warm ups or preps I can do before getting started this season?

Dear Awesome Carol: You are inspiring, what a tremendous hurdle you accomplished, to lose such an impressive amount of weight. When I am in my low teen mode of weight, I too feel more comfortable in the weight area of the gym. The gravatron seems easier at 112! And for Toby: just do it, stay with it, you need no one's approval to stay on a healthy goal oriented path.

Hi! Call me TOBY. RedShoes just friended me, I saw this team on her page and liked the image. I want to have arms like that. Iran Maidens is a cute play on words too. I intend to start weight training, but have idea how to progress. My Life Long Companion and I are building a house and airfield together out in the wilderness of West Texas. But I have noticed that if I were stronger, I could be more effective with construction tasks.
Actually, I would feel more comfortable if my body looked more androgenous (my other half is transgendered) I am not doing testosterone therapy, nor do I anticipate changing my anatomy.
I am putting this OUT THERE so that I cannot be accused of being secretive. I have had a recent experience on spark teams with someone being exclusionary and hurtful. Sorry if I seem defensive. I AM! If you can bide with me, I will stay. Otherwise, I will disappear, BUT I WOULD APPRECIATE HONESTY! TOBY

Hi..My name is Carol & I am new to this team but not to sparks. Many years ago I was into strength training! I had several setbacks due to injury and gained a bunch of weight. I have since lost it, and have taken up strength training again for about a year! I was thrilled to stumble on to this team. I love strength training, and feel totally comfortable & confident in the gym when I lift! Please feel free to stop by my page!

Hello everyone...My name is Tess

I am new to this team but not to weight training. I've been lifting since 2008 w/my hubby. I'm so excited to find this team because most women I speak to look at weight training as a Male sport.

I really want to move to the next leave...cutting body fat. But it's hard I'm really not into supplements, detoxing or enhancements. So I have no clue how I will accomplish this goal.

I love the group name! I've never really worked with weights before, and have mostly focused on cardio in the small amount of time I get at the gym. I found some old free weights in the garage, and I'm interested in learning how to use them, because I can do it at home (e.g. I do not need to drag my kids to a 2nd location) but I couldn't find any basic guide on Spark People. I'm trying to get more exercise in my week, using little to no fitness equipment.

I have been active on Spark people since the last week of July, and I haven't really seen the scale dropping too much, but my clothes do fit differently and I feel great, so I'm trying not to be entirely focused on numbers.

Hi, just hoping to learn lots and share the journey. Am an absolute beginner, even though I have seen the inside of a gym once or twice. Will gain a fitness membership at a local gym once the real cold weather starts. Looking forward to a few months of 'something different' and hope I 'll get hooked.

Like most of the posts here I am new as well...as in I've never did weight training so I will most def need your superior guidance :) There is a gym at my apt and I do believe they have weights...if not there are weights at my university gym. So any tips or guidelines for a beginner would be most appreciated ^_^

I'm silent because I don't have a lot to say, but when I do speak, it's because what I have to say is important!

Hi, I'm Jacqueline. I did weight training in college and loved how firm and fit my body was back then. Health issues (most resolved now) and accidents wrecked me physically, but I'm going to look good once my weight comes off! Hoping a lot of you ladies can tell me how, cos college lifting was on Universals which are dinosaurs of the ST world LOL! I have a Tuff Stuff home gym, but my knowledgeable wrestling son is back at college now and I don't know what I'm doing but eager to learn.

I teased my Mommy to Wowwy pal Jessica when she started ST a few weeks ago saying as much as she claimed to hate ST her first few times doing it, I bet she'd grow to love it and join the Iron Maidens! I heard about this forum reading one of those "inspirational" blogs featured, although I can't remember the lady's name who posted the blog.

Looking forward to learning a lot!
