Hi my name is Leanna , nick name is tink, I just had total right knee replacement and I am now walking a mile 2 days a week . knee is still week but I will do this as need to loose at least 100 lbs.

HMMM...I guess I should have figured out that major from your nom de plume....Art_HIstory. My sister is an artist and my daughter is also talented. She started out thinking of being an art major, fresh out of High School. She was, ahem, "traumatized" when she had to sketch nudes in her first art class at college. We (as parents) were amused and maybe a little relieved that our only daughter was having such a difficult time looking at a nude male. She switched her major to Earth Sciences with a minor in geology. She is now a preschool/toddler teacher, which has nothing to do with her science major.

I like that term "learning curve of frustration". I'm a teacher and I understand that totally, but in the case of my DH and I learning to dance, I think that curve is made of ice. We just keep sliding right off it. We can do that "junior High" slow dance and my feet don't get too bruised. We took lessons for a while. He danced me into a trash barrel...I am not kidding. It was a waltz and I was trusting him to lead me safely. I fell into the trash barrel where he "safely" led me. We do keep trying. I think it's great you plan to continue on to the PhD. It's a lot of work, but you'll be glad you did it.

Why thank you! I am very excited to be realistically working toward a more energetic lifestyle once again. ;) I understand completely about difficulty learning to dance. I am currently trying to teach my parents and my boyfriend and they are experiencing that initial learning curve of frustration. But they will get it! And you can too!

I am studying Art History and am currently in a Master's program and am thinking of continuing on at the PhD level after next year. It's been really exciting and really difficult all at the same time. :)

Welcome back and welcome to Wacky Walkers. Swing dancing is a fantastic form of exercise and one that I wish I was able to pursue. My DIL does ballroom dancing as one of her "hobbies" (passions) and she is an amazing dancer. Of course, she is my DIL so I am a bit biased. She's tried to teach my DH and me to dance and is a really good teacher. Unfortunately, as hard as we try, my DH and I struggle with the dancing. It's more like stomping and tripping each other when we do it but we try. I know what you mean about sedentary in school, especially when you have a desk job, but it helps pay the tuition and beat loans. What are you studying?

Hello! I've used SparkPeople before (2008) to help me get in shape for my Swing Dancing passion! I loved what I saw and felt, but didn't stick with it as much as I should. Now, I am in grad school....and talk about sedentary! I have an assistantship that keeps me working in a library all day where there are no windows and I am staring at a computer screen for endless hours cataloging manuscripts. In other words, I need something fun and happy to keep me in a healthy mood. I am excited about this team!

We (my family) were just driving out of WDW as the marathon started that snowy, icy day. I think it was between 4 and 5am and we saw those hardy souls out there in the snow and sleet. We gave them a thumbs up and sent them warm thoughts. I've never done the marathon since we usually leave just as it starts. This was the first year we were there and it was amazing. My husband and I are thinking we may try one in a few years. We did talk to a couple of people who ran them (friends of ours) and I LOVED the medals you all got. I really, really liked the goofy one but I also know what those runners had to do to get that one. Amazing, inspiring.....

Hey there, I had friends that went down the 2010 WDW Half and told me all about the snow, sleet and cold... the worst I heard was the water thrown at the water stops freezing on the course and forming black ice. I got the lucky weather year!

I'd be glad to share what I can on finding walker-friendly (and not walker "tolerant") races With the right training (and a doctor's blessing) I do believe anyone can walk a half.

Wow! You are a serious walker. I was actually at WDW during the marathons this past January.The weather was a whole lot better than that snow in 2010. Did you try that one as well? Hey all... GO WALKERS!

I am a half and full marathon walker. I have my 4th half marathon of 2011 coming up this weekend in NY, and then my 5th at Virginia Beach next weekend. I am a member of the Half Fanatics (national organization for people who do a LOT of half marathons) and I'm a Team in Training walk coach as well.

I have run in the past but I really prefer walking. It's easier on my joints, it relieves more stress for me, I make more friends, and, well, I take way better race pictures. :o)

Hi everybody!
I was looking for a walking group to join and liked the name of this one. I like the idea of being wacky :)
I'm mostly walking on my treadmill now in the winter. As a matter of fact, I'm going to get on it here in a few minutes. I'm hoping to up the activity into running, too.

"overly happy walking buddies"...yeah, that's a very good description. I know the first time I did the 3 mile's that Leslie had with her Walk Slim program (the one with some jogging) I was talking to Leslie between gasping for air, convinced she was trying to kill me and those "happy walking buddies" were just smiling away. I was grimacing and gritting my teeth but I made it through. Turns out, the 4 mile walk/jog in that program was easier than the 3 mile "fast walk". Who knew?

Hi, I am Ciara, I go by Ci. I just got new shoes and am slowly getting addicted to walking. I love the bounce, when I walk! I try to do a mile 6 days a week, and rest one day a week. I own WATP tape, it is a combo of a 3 and 4 mile walk. I have done it once and thought that I should have made out my will before I started!!! Luckily, I survived! I haven't done it again. However, since I just relocated to CO and am told that it snows like crazy here in Aurora, that I will probably be getting more familiar with Leslie and her overly happy walking buddies again soon. Glad I found the team and I love the team pic!!!

Hi Joyce, Patty here. Welcome to Wacky Walkers. I wish I could give you some winter walking tips, we have the snow, but I tend not to go out and try walking in it. I usually use my Walk Away the Pounds indoor program when the weather/roads are not conducive to outdoor walking. Try posting your question on the "Coffee Chat" thread. Pretty sure someone will have suggestions for you.

Welcome. I found that exercise does help to decrease pain but I'm pretty sure it's because of the endorphins that it releases. If where you work allows it, see if you can get a large stability ball to sit on. It's a good way to get some movement and it does force you to improve your posture while sitting. I have one at home and I sit on it when I am using the computer, watching TV or just for fun. My grandchildren loved it when I bounced on it while holding them. You can also see if you can walk faster and further in the limited amount of time that you have to walk (if that is a problem). Good luck with your program.

Hi, I have been walking almost every day, but it's not enough. I have to start eating right and do more. I sit all day at my job and it's starting to take it's toll. I am getting more and more neck and back pain just from sitting. Dr. says I have to exercise more and I will feel better.

I love to crochet and cross stitch and have a one year old granddaughter who I adore. I want to be able to have fun with her and not be in pain or tired all the time.

Welcome. I am also a December baby but somewhat older than you. Congrats on your first grandchild coming soon! I have 4 children and 2 grandchildren. My youngest child is heading off to his first year of college at the end of this week.
I wish I knew how to crochet. My Mother, mother-in-law and grandmother all tried to teach me but I just never was able to be coordinated enough. It takes a talent I just don't have. My Mother-in-law made afghans, scarf and hat sets and a sweater. They were beautiful!

Hello Hello and Welcome! Glad to see you joined. I loved the "armed with fat and dangerous" analogy. So true. I've read the south beach books and bought the recipe books. I'm a diabetic and the south beach program fits quite well for me. I've never actually used the program in total so I'll be interested to find out how it works.

Woke up one morning and realized what my body was trying to tell me. I'm armed with fat and I'm dangerous to myself. I could literally see my life passing before my very eyes because I didn't have the energy to get up and run with it! So, I did some research, decided to follow the south beach diet and get out of the house by walking in the fresh air! Wow! I feel better all ready and I haven't even finished the first day. And its because Ive already made a positive change. I made a decision for change. That in itself, took a huge load off of me. Now I want to meet some new friends with the same goals. I picked this team because it describes me in the name. lol

Hello Cynthia and Welcome! I love the Leslie Sansone DVD's too! When I started doing them, my family teased me saying they looked pretty easy to do. Well, I challenged them to keep up with me doing them and they didn't last past 2 miles of the 4 fast miles with jogging intervals. Those WATP programs are indeed challenging and they work!
It's wonderful that you have a friend to support you with your goals and rewards. As for the people who are "not that nice" to heavy people...sad to say, they exist everywhere. It's not their place to judge, but they do. Best to just ignore them and be proud of yourself knowing that you are working to get healthy.

Hello everyone,I'm Cynthia.
I love to walk and sadly I have not been doing that enough for a long while.I have decided that I'm going to start walking for exercise and fun agian.I have the goal this week to walk at least 15 minutes a day to build back up to 30 minutes and beyond agian.I walk at home in my living room with Leslie Sansone dvds,I have social phobia and lets just say people in my quiet country neighborhood are not that nice when they see heavy people out for a walk or jog.Since my car is broke down at the moment and I cant get to the local park conservatory on my own as a reward of completing my weekly goals a friend is taking me to the conservatory at the end of the week.The conservatory has many trails to walk and is so beautiful to see.
I need to reweigh myself so I'm probly over 300lbs now since some things began a few months ago I know I have put on the weight I had lost since I started here at spark,and now I have to get back into things and reset all my goals and weight and all that in the next few days.Oh and I love the coffee break board I love to have coffee and read posts in the mornings! emoticon

One day at a time is all anyone can ask for!

Hello I'm Ann and new to wacky walkers. I'm 65 married to a great guy and trying my best to exercise so I can feel less pain. Right now I can
do about 10 minutes each day if I do a half hour I can't move for a day or so. I have been feeling better about myself since I've joined spark people.People here seem to really care about each other and that really helps. I stay home and away from people and I realize I need people in my life but the more I try the less I want to be around anyone. It will be hard but it's my # 1 goal.

Hello..Well. I am a 4 year member of Spark. I've lost, and managed to keep off 30 lbs., give or take a few. just quit smoking a month ago, and have so far not gained any weight. Tracking is what does it for me. emoticon I have always been sorley amiss in the cardio dept. of exercising, and have made a committment to a daily walk. I have my route all mapped out, and so far am on a 3 day streak. (gotta start somewhere!) Thanks for the nice welcome.

Well, I'm not exactly HOW I came across Wacky Walkers - and I definitely do not know what this means -but I can guess.... Anyhow - I'm trying to be a walker, wacky or not...to burn calories. It seems like when Sat. and Sun. roll around I bow out of exercising for some reason. Maybe because it's because I LOVE it so much - lol! So tomorrow is Mon. and I'll be back at again. Somewhere here I read to try to get in 3000 steps/half hour. I'll try this tomorrow and see how it goes. Last Fri. I did 3.5 mi in 58 min - so 17 min. miles. I was OK with this. I'm going faster than the music I walk with. Anyway - happy walking to all you wacky walkers! Keep it going - as I say that to myself the loudest!!
