G'day Richmond Sparkers! I'm originally from the UK, now living in Glen Allen. I'm trying to be more active, and get my weight down. I'm using a Fitbit to keep track of my activity, and slowly edging upwards in my target steps.

Hello there. I am relatively new to the Spark world. I joined last year but didn't keep up with it. I am 43, married with pets, living in eastern Henrico. I had an injury to my Achilles' tendon back in early December, so all exercise has been slow and deliberate, just trying to keep mobile. I want to start exercising, but I know I have to be patient with myself.

In lieu of exercising, I've taken this time to start eating vegetables and fruits. It's mostly what I eat these days. I am not afraid of potatoes!! I had McDonald's today for the first time in weeks and I did not enjoy it at all.

Just thought I'd introduce myself.

Hello fellow Richmonders!!

I just joined today (I was a member about a dozen years ago, but left because I wasn't using it enough for the fee - nice to see it's free!); I am a Canadian who moved to Richmond in 2011 to marry a local.

My ultimate goal is to get back to running and I want to lose 25lbs before I even take it up again, but I do plan on doing the Monument 10K in 2015! I think it's too soon to aim for this year. I may try the 8K during the Richmond Marathon in the fall -- I fully expect to be logging that distance regularly by then. Looking forward to getting to know more locals!! It's difficult being in a different country and not knowing what's available in the community.

Hope your doctor cam help you with your knee pain. Have you tried water exercise. That is pretty gentle on joints.

I suspect once I get knees checked out Dr will put me on an exercise program. So hard when you have aches, pains but I know there are exercises I can do.

I am back on Spark after a year plus away. I live in North Chesterfield/Belmont exit off of Chippenham. Grandma to 2-ages 3 and 5 who live in Chester and 'step' grandma to 2 ages 12 and 14 up in Luray
Would love to find friend in area while I'm 62/retired always is good to find a workout buddy especially a 'Silver Sneaker' and some one to share visits to local sights with as hubby is not interested in.

Hello SP,

Hello! I'm not new to SP, but this is one of the things that kept me on track the first time around! I live in the downtown Richmond area, I work night shift, long hours (12-16). When I first started SP I was 218, got down to 173, then gained weight after starting the night shift. I got back up to 190, now 180, and trying to get down to around 145 by November. I wouldn't mind a little motivation or inspiration! Message me if you'd like. (I'm not sure how the site runs anymore, I'm trying to figure that out now :) )

hello. I'm Freda, I'm from Highland Springs, but work near VCU. I am 43. My starting weight was 325 in March 2013. I am currently hovering around 300. I have kind of stagnated and want to get motivated to improve my health. I want to be stronger and have a smaller waist, but my biggest goal is to have more stamina and energy. Reasonable goal is 260. Ideal goal is 220 or lower. I refuse to have surgery to get there.
I am on CPAP therapy and have arthritis in my ankles and feet. I have increased my fruits and vegetable consumption. I'm increasing my water. I guess my biggest challenge is getting moving.

Hey everybody! I'm brand new to this site, I decided enough was enough, and I'm going to try and get into shape. I'm currently a tiny bit over 200lbs, my goal is 150 by September, wish me luck! I'm not a member of any of the gyms, (woahs of a poor student) so I run! (I'm an introvert so the alone time is comforting) I'm planning on getting a zombie run app for my phone to motivate me! My short term goal (as of right now) is being able to run a full mile without stopping to walk or rest, however my longer term goal is to run a 5k!

Hi everyone, My name is Brandi and I am trying to complete a weight loss goal with myself to be down to 220 pds by Nov 1st. I started at 292 on June 1st and I am currently down to 256 so /im off to a good start averaging aboiut 10pds a month. Due to my weight loss my arms have started to sag so i am opting to get my arms done in November to remove the excess skin that why November is my deadline. I currently go to Planet Fitness off Midlothian Monday thru Friday if anyone is interested in working out with me.

Hi everyone! I am not new to Sparkpeople but I have just recently started using it more. I need its tools and some extra motivation now that I am down to losing my last 15 pounds. Hello, just joined today. I am a teacher and have gained 20 lbs over the past two school years. I am going to use the summer to get back into my healthy eating and regular exercise. When I signed up it said losing 2 lbs per week, I would reach my goal of 20 lbs by Sept 4th which is great.
My fitness goal is to run a 5k.

Hi All,
I'm 30yo mom to a 3yo boy and 18mo girl. I've been an emotional eater as long as I can remember, i just didn't realize what I was doing until a couple of years ago. I try to resist the urges to binge, but sometimes it's not easy at all. I can't say that I love to work out, but I don't mind it - but I love to eat, anything sweet or salty does the trick. I try to eat a whole foods diet as much as possible, but sometimes cave. I've been yo-yo dieting before I had kids, but with the kids the lbs kept coming on and I no longer want to yo yo diet, I want to lose weight the healthy way. The bad thing is that it takes me much longer to lose weight now b/c of all that yo yo dieting. I just came back from vacation, where there is no limit to how much I ate and gained 10lbs in 10days (it took me a year to lose that 10lbs!) Sorry for a long rant, but I'm looking for a support group and hope that I've come to the right one!

Hello all! I just joined SP a few moments ago and am just feeling my way around. I don't know exactly how much I weigh, the last time I was on a scale was in September of last year and I weighed 219. I know I've lost weight because I was wearing a size 16 and now most of my pants are too big but a 14 is a little too small. The only exercise I do on a consistent basis is line dancing about 4 hours a week. I joined Victory Lady in January but have only been once. I am planning to start going at least twice a week for strength training. My major goals are to tone my arms--I have the dreaded flabby arm syndrome--and I think sleeveless tops are so sexy; and to tone my stomach--tired of having to hold it in constantly and trying to sit so the roll doesn't show. If any of you are in the West End and a member of VL, I'd love a work out partner. Looking forward to a positive association with SP and help with changing my lifestyle.

Gluten free anyone? I have Celiac and must follow a gluten free diet. I typically don't sign up on site because all the choices for food have to be custom setup or just aren't available. Has anyone else setup list of gluten free items for each meal choice and if so, does this site allow you to copy those?

I live in Amelia but drive down Hull Street to 288 everyday. I work in Henrico County off Broad Street - I need a buddy! I don't really have time for exercise with a friend before or after work bc of time constraints but would live to have an online friend who is also going to lost weight by exercising solo at home. I plan to do my kid's PS3 dancing game because I know right now that I do not have the stamina to complete a whole song doing all the movements. I can't wait to announce how I am doing!

Hi there, my name is Lisa and I'm trying to whip my butt in shape for the umteenth time so let's hope this works. Looking for friends and motivation here on the site and am willing to do the same for others out there as well. I think things are a lil different for me this time around because I have changed my eating habits and have realized I am not starting a diet, just a lifestyle change. I have killed the sugar in my life (Cola) and am trying to weed out most of the cheese and bread I Iove to have on a daily basis, lol. Welcome to the team and to Richmond. I live near Chester also. I moved here in 2004. It's just my husband, me and our pets (4 dogs and a cat). Our children are grown and live elsewhere.

The closest gym with a pool is the Y, close the corner of Jeff Davis and Ironbridge. I think membership is based on income. It's cheaper for me as a senior to have a membership at American Family. I have been a member there since we moved here. The new one by Walmart doesn't have a pool. The one at Colonial Heights has a pool. So does the one off Hull Street.

I am very new to Richmond, I live on the south side closer to Chester, I would love friends and someone to be there with me, I have an amazing husband who supports my efforts. He doesnt want a skinny wife, he wants a healthy wife. I have 2 wonderful children who are grown and neither of them live here in Richmond with me. This is not going to be a woe is me, but truth, I have no friends, I only have my children and family. I would love to make friends who will be there for me through this journey and beyond. I would love to find a gym that is not super expensive and doesnt require a long term commitment. I enjoy going to the gym, especially doing the water aerobics.

Is there anyone in the west end of Richmond? I'm looking for a walking/biking buddy for the remainder of the summer, up until the end of August. Preferably someone in my age range (check the page for that stuff) and with similar weight loss goals. I like to exercise in the morning, but depending on my work schedule that can be moved to the afternoon. I don't drive, so it'd have to be in surrounding neighborhoods (mine is sort of short) but I am dedicated!

You only lose if you quit.

Hi Everyone,
I am in Eastern Henrico, and would love to meet up with some walking friends. I joined SP last year but then dropped off the face of the earth. I am rejoining today and want to be active in the group this time around. Laying low only added on more pounds! I have a lot to loose, but am setting 10 pound goals to keep myself motivated. Getting moving and making better menu choices are my goals more than loosing a set amount of weight. Please drop me a line if you are interested in pounding the pavement in Eastern Henrico!

Hey, I'm Erin. I found the spark people app on my ipod while I was looking for a food tracker, and then found the website from that. I'm pretty stoked to see that Richmond has such a big community.

I'm trying to get in shape for my wedding and live a little healthier than I did in my twenties. :)

I usually work out at Gold's gym, but I occasionally take a walk around Belle Isle or the Canal walk.

Good Morning, All.

Right now, I'm trying to get active and lower my blood pressure. Graduate school and studying for the February bar increased my stress level and blood pressure. So, I changed my diet 2 years ago (no beef, pork, salt or canned foods other than no salt canned foods) and now I'm getting serious about living an active lifestyle.

I joined this site on a whim. I figure it will help me track my activity goals and be something else to distract my mind so that I can sleep.

Any lawyers on this site with tips for passing the VA bar, shoot me a message.

Hi Richmond,
I'm looking for some more motivation to get back to my healthy weight again. I am ready to jump in, and motivate others along the way if I can.

If there's anyone out there in the Fan/Museum District who wants a walking/jogging buddy please contact me. I try to be an early riser, but would also love to have a buddy to walk/jog with in the evenings. It's such a drag this time of year when the daylight is so scarce.

Hello...my name is Tina and it has been less than a week since I first started this program. I am in the west end and would love to find someone to walk with or even go to the gym (gold's gym). Hi All,
My name is Julie. I have been using SP since August and have lost 23 pounds. My goal is 130 by Christmas, 125 by our wedding anniversary in February, and 120 by my 33rd birthday in July. My eating habits, meal timing and choices, and regularity of cooking meals have drastically improved. I run now instead of walking, but I am still struggling to keep a regular strength training schedule. I am getting them in, but they are sporadic (2 weeks ago Tuesday/ Wednesday, last week Friday/Saturday, this week Monday/Tuesday/Friday). Everything I do is at home and in the office. I avoid the gym as much as possible but have found that I can push myself hard without having to go anywhere.

My husband and son are picking up on my good habits and are more active and are eating better too.

MOM of 3 teenagers. GOAL-FAT FREE AT 43. Needing to take 35 pounds off. Not interested in joining gym. Hitting the pavement sounds better to me. Hi! I just joined sparkpeople today, and I can already tell that this will be a motivating website! I am 41 and recently moved back to Virginia to attend VCU full time. As you can imagine, the stress of all the changes got to me, and I gained more weight (I've always been a "chunk"... LOL). Anyway, I really, really want to lose weight and keep it off this time, as I have been a life-long yo-yo-dieter. I think I have been in the same 40-pound range since I was a teen. I ultimately would like to lose 80 pounds, but I am gonna steal WW's initial goal of 10% -- 22 pounds, and work from there. I broke my heel and leg a few years ago, so I can't ever again do anything high impact (run, jump, etc.) so sometimes finding a good cardio is hard, though I love to swim! If there are any VCU-ers on here, I would love to have a workout buddy at the Cary Street Gym. Or I would also love some friends who enjoyed going out, but who also encouraged me (as I would you!) to eat/drink healthier. Please feel to send me a message. I wish everyone good thoughts as we travel this journey!

Hi! My name is Krista and I am a recent VCU graduate living in the fan. Weight loss has never been an easy thing for me, I grew up skinny and used to walk everywhere, but went into a more sedative lifestyle since I've moved to Richmond three years ago and gained 40 pounds. Though I have to admit I think gaining some of that weight was good, I want to lose some of it and keep it off so I can be back in a healthy weight range. I am so happy to be a part of sparkpeople and hope to learn more about these message boards!

Milothian has a great YMCA if you are looking for affordable for the whole family or Victory Lady is super affordable for just you. American Family is the huge mega center gym that most people (including myself) belong to and they are building a new one in Midlothian.

Hi my name is Jennifer and I live in Gum Spring. I have 2 children one will be 5 in March and the other turned 2 this past October. I am needing to lose the last 15 to 20 lbs I put on during my 2 pregnancy.I used spark people's babyfit site during mainly my first pregnancy and some during my 2nd and loved it! I was a gym rat before I had kids and during my 1st pregnancy than after that never found a gym to go to until 1.5 years before I moved back here to VA. I loved going to the gym and I miss it so very much. My time now is nil and I have not time what so ever to workout anymore. I would love the opportunity to meet new people and get some ideas on how I can workout at home and find the motivation because honestly I have none when it comes to working out at home.

Hello all! I am originally from Midlothian but a few months ago bought a house in Amelia.. but I still go to Woodlake. My fiance goes to golds on midlothian and raves about it, so I may be switching in the future.. I too work downtown.. anyone doing the half marathon in november?

Before I had my son I was 220 pds and after I had him I dropped down to 190, and it was the best feeling ever, so now I am looking forward to losing more weight, because it feels good
