You're definitely not too old! There are people in our running group that are 50, 60, 70 and up! And they're amazing runners; so inspiring! The marathon is over, but there will be training groups starting up in Oct. to begin training for next year. There is a full marathon, a half marathon and a 5k, so lots of choices for you! Just start slow and ease your body into it. Most people begin with a walk/run program. There is even a Couch to 5k program available out there for people who have never run before. I am not a "natural" runner nor do I have a "runner's body", but i get out there and do my thing and go my pace and have a great time! I think you should try it; it's surprisingly addictive! Good luck and let us know about your progress! emoticon

Yes, Galloway is known for a run so many minutes, walk 2... It is very good for beginners and continuing runners.
Some people want to run to get in shape. I believe it is wiser to get in shape to run. Stetching, walking, starting with 1 mile adding on philosophy.
I like Hal Higdon. I will include link www.halhigdon.com

That is awesome Wendy!! Good for you! I love that you're doing the Modesto 5k. It's going to be so much fun! I think that most of us here on the Modesto Spark Team can do at least the 5k, and some can probably do the half. It would be so wonderful to see us all out there! How about it, Sparkers? Let's see if we can get as many of us out there as possible!!It's a totally doable goal, most of you are already doing 4 or more miles already. Let's represent! Pretty please :)

I have always been one to dread exercising and now that I made a running goal and started running, I have been looking forward to it. I am amazed that I actually can't wait to get my run in, and I know it's because I feel so great after I've done it. I feel like I've accomplished something, and I have more energy. I can't wait to see how I feel after completing the 5k. emoticon

Your post made me smile. I am so excited to see and hear about people picking the Modesto Run on March 21st, as their goal event. (I am on the committee for the race), so when I see people out walking or running now, I wonder if they are training for it?
Great you have a treadmill to use in this crazy weather. I love the cool air, but this rain is wild.
Doesn't the whole day feel more successful once you get a work out in?

I am new to sparkpeople, only in my third week, but I am planning on running in the Modesto 5k race. I have never ran in anything before, but I figured this would be an attainable goal, and help me keep on track and motivated. I have worked up to running and walking three miles on the treadmill in 48 minutes, but my goal is to run the entire 5k in under 36 minutes.

This just in:

Rumors are swirling that the Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon is sold out. That is NOT true. While we are getting quite a few entries every day, we will not close the full marathon or half marathon until MARCH 15, 2010. The 5K will remain open until race day, although we encourage advance registration to avoid the last minute rush. Entry fees go up on Feb. 28, so sign up early. We are especially encouraging walkers to join in the fun, either in the 5K or half marathon! You don't have to be a speed demon to participate!

The Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon course has received confirmation that the course is now certified by the USATF, certification code CA10002RS. This means the race may be used as a Boston qualifier! Sign up now for this flat, fast course! Certification is pending on the half marathon and 5K courses.

I bought shoes- I went to a shoe store in the Century Center and was fitted for running shoes today- I didn't buy them from there (out of my budget) but I did buy the exact same pair off of Ebay for 1/3 the price-- I decided to check out the store in Century Center because I had found great reviews about this shoe company called New Balance and they made running shoes but I really liked that they even had shoes that were made in the USA.. even better.. comfort and support and from a USA made company :)

Totally agree with Jan. The gift of cross training has been invaluable to helping me run fairly injury free. I love yoga because of the way it strengthens my legs and seems to help take the burden off my knees which is my problem area. I've noticed when i do yoga on a consistent basis, i don't have issues with my hips or knees. Other runners use other methods of strength training and I know it has helped them as well. Also, after long runs, I like to bike the next day. I am not one of those people that can run every day, i have to have a break for my body's sake after 2, possibly 3 days of running. But i prefer the break after 2 days. It keeps me coming back which is the idea. Heard a great quote, " Success is measured by finishing each run in an upright position with a smile on your face, wanting to do it again." That's my philosophy. And yes, smile when you're out there, we really are having fun, aren't we? Good luck with all your goals, I know you'll do great!! emoticon

Shannon,
Shin splints hurt so much. I bet with good shoes and starting out on soft ground you wont have that painful experience again. The canal banks here seem very compacted, but they really are softer than side walk, also the trail part at Dry Creek is soft ground to start on. (either place is best to do with a partner or a good protective dog at your side.) Or any of the School Tracks are softer than sidewalk. In High School we ran on side walk, but my hips start to ache now, if I do side walk for too much. Thats okay, it led me to seek scenic places.
If your shins start to ache, don't get too discouraged, just be flexible about your excercise. Example: I ran long on Sunday, so yesterday I did the rowing machine at the gym, that break, helped me feel recovered enough to go to a track work out this evening.
Also, some ladies wear heels to work. Heels are bad for achiles, calves, sets ya' up for injury while working out.
ps. Be sure to smile when you walk. Tell me tomorrow if you did?

Jan,

Thanks for all the feedback! I really appreciate it. I would love to get running litterally and I have had shin splints in the past (had a cast for about 12 weeks because of how bad they were) so I want to do this right and not get discouraged and I really appreciate all the good information that everyone has to offer here!

I am running in Nike now and I love my shoes. I have no pain and I don't really want to give them up, but I know it's getting to be about time for new ones.
I bought Saucony's online once and they were not good to me, but my daughter says they are the most comfortable shoes she's every run in. Who knew?

Just wanted to hitch hike on the shoe subject. Local sports stores have good shoes, but the staff are not trained well enough to fit you.
Getting fitted at a specialty store like Feet Fleet is the best investment you can make in your running or walking! Once you are in the model that is best for your foot type, and actually train it (sometimes it takes a pair or two before Cinderella gets the right slipper.) For example, if your mileage increases you may later need a shoe designed for distance. Or yoy may need to get into a shoe that has a rommier toe box, which you will discover if you get into more miles.I also like running on trails, so I also have a pair made for trails.
You can do compare shopping and find your replacement pair at a deal from Road Runner or at a sidewalk sale at a local sport store. I have found some at a deal, by Google Shopping for the model I know is good, but make sure it is a reliable site that will handle returns well in case of defects. So otherwords to get concerned that you will have to pay top dollar everytime you need a new pair, which should be every 500 miles or every 6 months if you run consistantly.
Sorry I went on, just don't want anyone to waste their money on the wrong shoes, get achey knees or painful calves, just to get discouraged, thinking its them and not realize it's the shoes.
Sounds like those posting know how it goes, but there may be people viewing that don't have a clue.
ps. another tip for new run/walkers "YOU DON"T PUT RUNNING SHOES IN THE WASHING MACHINE" it breaks them down quicker. Sorry but, your white shoes, are not going to stay white, if you actually use them.
So show off those dirty Nikes,Asics,Brookes...

I just got a new pair at Fleet Feet in Stockton. It's the first time I've been there and I'm glad I went. The guy, David, fitted and measured my feet. Then he watched me run and watched me walk and told me about my gait and stride and what little tendencies I had. Then he brought out 3 pairs of shoes for me to try based on that info and I picked the ones I liked best. I've had them for about a week now and ran my 12 miles with them Sat and am very happy with them. So, there is my 2cents worth of advice :) Hope it was helpful, good luck.

I am so proud of myself!

I have done the running with my Wii several times where you run for 10 minutes and it logs your distance and I was managing right at 1.5 miles in 10 minutes-- so I thought that I would try doing 20 minutes and see how far I got! I am so excited to report that I managed without even feeling fatigued to run the 20 minutes and ended up at 3.24 miles total!!!!

emoticon

I have already put some runs on my calendar and will be joining up next week when I get paid on the running team

I saw the shirts for the 1/2 marathon and marathon. I think they look pretty cool.

Today, we (ShadowChase) did a non-competive run out in Oakdale. There were lots of new people that joined us. The January air felt great.

Hi everyone!
I am looking at joining this too- I would only be at teh 5K level, but I was telling my husband last week that I would love to be able to run a marathon for my 40th birthday (luckily that is still 2 years away LOL). In the meantime I have actually started doing the running with my Wii and I even managed to do a mile and a half in under 10 minutes :)

I'm glad you joined Shadowchase, too, Laura!!! Did you end up going down to the Santa Run? If you did, my husband and I were at the water stop which means I probably saw you, but didn't know it! If not, then maybe another time we'll meet. Ps, I know what you mean about the treadmill, but sometimes you just do what you have to do to get the miles in. I'm a big baby with the cold, so I'm very happy to see the mornings a bit warmer.

I went to the gym at 5:30 am, since I really didn't feel like being cold. Having a goal certainly helps get me out and moving.
Ran in Knights Ferry on Sunday. Took it slow since I missed a few weeks being sick, but it felt so good.
Nothing like breathing deep from a run or brisk walk to feel alive.
I think there are more Want-to-be Marathon walkers and runners out there, that just need a little nudge, or motivation to sign up.
This is an excellent time to gear up, we are ahead of all the New Years resolution people that flood gyms in January. We will actually be ready for the New Year! Ya us!

Crazycowgirl, we're meeting every Sat. at East LaLoma park at 8am. Shadowchase club has a whole bunch of people training for the full and the half out there. They have a schedule for beginners and intermediate and advanced. All walkers and runners are welcome. They are a great group of people, all of different fitness levels. We would love to have you out there with us. It's so much more fun when you're training with a group and not by yourself. Congratulations on setting a great goal of doing your first half marathon! You should be so proud of yourself! Also, Runnersworld.com has a smart coach application that you can use to put in your info and it will print out a training schedule for you. It usually asks for your 5k time or any race you've run. Then it calculates your schedule for you. If you haven't run in any races, just put the amount of time it takes you to run or walk 3 miles. Then it will generate the schedule. Well, good luck with your goals! i think it's great that you want to do the half!

I'm planning to do the 1/2, my first one.
I'm having a hard time getting going with training; does anyone know of other training programs or groups getting together in the Modesto area? Or anyone looking for a training partner?

I am an aspiring runner. Started thinking about it 4 years ago when I cheered my cousin on at the Nike Womans Marathon. It was so inspiring to watch! That was also the first I had heard of the Nike+ system. Bought a nano soon after so I could track my progress. This year I really started loving it though, started with Couch to 5k and now I can even run without the podcast. I'm finally to the point where I run more than I walk, I'm not very fast, but I'm doing it!

That is so cool you signed up!!!
A lot of the usual runners are signed up, but I keep meeting people that plan to do it, that have never done a 1/2 or full marathon before. I find it really exciting to see people getting out there and taking the plunge.
Running has always been such a high for me, I am happy to see others feel the success, of seeing how far they can go.

I got off track for a long while, but I am slowly building a base back. It is not easy, I have gotten so out of condition, but it still feels better than doing nothing, to breathe deep and just go.

Anyone eles out there want to do the 1/2, Marathon or 5k on March 21st? Now is the time to start training.
