Hi everyone. I am new to this site but here goes - I am 53 (well, almost 54) year old woman with a ton of weight to lose! I have already started this journey and am going to have lap band surgery in November because I am so so tired of going it alone. I have lost 30 lbs on my own and 35 since beginning the lap band procedure (not for sissies - takes 7 months and a slew of doctor's appointments and clearances) so I am now down 65 lbs total. Still, I have to lose around 150-200 more so you see, I am still very heavy. My knees are shot so walking is out but I do chair exercises. I look forward to the day I can walk, go on rides, just do normal things like other people. I have a reunion of friends from High School coming up - have to worry about the seating etc. I can't believe I let this happen to me - but I did and I am fighting it with all I am worth. I am so excited about the changes which have already taken place in my body, can't wait for more. I don't need or expect to be skinny, just someone who passes for normal. Thanks for letting be go on about this!

Incentive? You need incentive? Just walking 30 minutes a day (usually in three 10-minute increments) I lowered my blood pressure from 140/88 to 117/70. It only took a month to kick in. I now try to walk 50 to 60 minutes a day - 10 minutes at a time. So, 10 minutes before work, 10 minutes at break, 20 minutes at lunch (10 at beginning of lunch hour and/or 10 at end of lunch hour), 10 minutes at afternoon break and 10 minutes after work. I then find a trail or go mall walking for two or three hours on the weekend.

Okay - my standard welcome spiel is - welcome. Remember, its not a race. It's about you developing better life-affirming habits to replace the bad habits that piled on the pounds. You can do it - one step, one minute at a time.

I started out riding a bike for 10 minutes and added five minutes a week by adding a single minute each day. And then repeating until the start of the next week. I can now go for 60 minutes. But, I switched to walking because its been so gorgeous out this summer. I'll go back to the bike when the bad/cold winter weather sets in. It's doable. Start small and then add on/level up. It's looking for the extra opportunities to sneak in some additional energy burners. Parking further away. Power lifting those grocery bags as you walk back to your car. Instead of carrying the whole basket of clean clothes back up stairs - make multiple trips only carrying three items at a time. And take the laundry basket back up on the last trip. Small things that start to add up and then start to snowball as you add more small things - one at a time.

Well, here I am. Over 50 and 100+ pounds to lose. Thanks for the welcome messages I received. And while I'm happy to be over 50, I'm not happy that my weight has hit an all time high and it gets worse with each passing year. I have decided that it does not have to continue this way and that I can spent the next 50 years feeling healthy and strong. I lose motivation when I think about all the years I wasted, but I am trying to stick with "the best is yet to come" attitude. I am a wife and mother of 2 who has also just gone back to school to finish my degree. So lots of good things happening - just need to stay focused.

emoticon KDHORSES We're so glad to have you with us. This is a great group of folks. We're active and friendly. If you have any questions, just post them and we'll do our best to answer for you. The site is full of excellent tools and a wealth of information that you can use to help you get healthy. I personally use the food and fitness trackers daily. I find that the accountability helps keep me focused. I also read and respond to the blogs and the posts in the various threads because sharing and reading experience, strength and hope is an excellent way to keep "outside of myself" and to get rid of that feeling of "terminal uniqueness" that sometimes plagues us. I hope you'll like it here. emoticon Dawn

Hi, welcome newcomers.

Well, I got the exercise thing down. Now, I need to get to work on portion control. I am eating (for the most part) the right foods. Just not in the correct portion sizes. And I still need to get that weekend self-sabotage demon under control.

But, I love this site. And I really like the people also. I just need to get more pro-active and post more often. Instead of coasting along - reading novels, playing on facebook games.

Hmmm. I feel another blog coming on titled I need...

Have a great day everyone.

welcome, yolanmama, i am pretty new here, . It is a very nice site, and i hope we can write often, I too gained alot of weight, i am now 285, it took me about 10 years to put it on, I know we can do this, justkeep posting, and sparking, I do it daily, even for a few minutes. I had not been so good at being consistent, but I think it makes a different.

all the graphs and sites, can be intiminating, i used to spend hours, going on many of them, but i find it works for me if i keep it simple. i chart my food on paper in a notebook, and then use spark to count water, fruit and veggies, and exercise.

i wish you alot of luck, Nancy emoticon

Hi everyone! Today is day one of the beginning of a new life for myself, and in searching the internet, I discovered this site, and found a wonderful group of people, ideas, and thoughts. I hope I get a chance to make a difference by learning from others in the group, and improving my life among other thoughts. I'm so excited to find people who truly know what it's like to be stared at, laughed at....and in general ignored. Thank you all for allowing me into your world.

It's possible. The good thing is that you can go in and delete your own posts (I think) if you want to remove them.. OR if they can't be deleted.. you can edit them to say different things if you want. LOL No biggie... we just thought you were excited to be here! In the spirit of that.......... emoticon emoticon emoticon

Welcome to the team Yolanda and Rick! I think that you've made a great choice in teams to join. I have been nothing but happy since joining here.

Yolanda.. the tracker thing on the bottom of folks posts is part of the sparkpage set up. Just follow the instructions when you set up your spark page and it will come together for you. If you have any questions, just ask.. folks are always happy to help you out here.

I hope that you will be post often and know that we are all here to support one another. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't be shy about sharing or venting. Sometimes you just need to have a forum to discuss things.

I personally use the food and fitness trackers daily. However, I do not use the spark people food or fitness "plans". Because of financial reasons I have to make do with the foods that I can so I just do my best to stay within the calorie guidelines that sparkpeople set up based on my weight and fitness level etc. I set up my own fitness plan because of my size and physical limitations that won't allow me to do many of the exercises on their list... so I set aside the 3 days for strength training as suggested and try to get in at least 90 mins of cardio a day as suggested. You can tweek it as you like. There are no hard and fast rules. We just do what fits best and we share those ideas with one another. It's all about teamwork.. inspiration, motivation and support!

Hi, I am really new to this, my name is Yolanda, I like the little graphic that shows ur weight loss, how do I get one of those? I dont have a profile page set up yet, just wanted to say hi. I am scheduled to start the process fo possibly getting a lap band, but my sister talked me out of it...she has been a R.N for over 20 years and I guess she has seen some real problems with it. I went to a OA H.O.A meeting, where all u eat is basically, nothing. I am feeling kinda lost. I really dont know where to begin. I am hoping by writing this, it will be a start to receiving some help that will work for me. I am 51 and i have a weight of 271, I gained over 100 lbs over the last 4 years, I figured out that averaged 2.5 lbs per month, seems kinda remarkable that is all I gained every month and eneded up here 4 years later. I quit smoking and replaced that addiction with food. So I am here asking for some help. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thankyou
Yolanda

Hi Everyone I just rounded the bend into my 50's this past spring and I realized that I was still having the same stupid weight conversations with myself. You know "Im not that bad" "Look at all of the others that are heavy, why am I stressing myself out" It's not how I look or what others are thinking(though it hurts if they tell you right?) It's how I feel and where am I going to be in a year. I have two beautiful grandson's 6yrs and 2yrs that I want to watch grow up. I am 259lbs with a long term goal weight of 140. I am going to strive to lose 2lbs a week. I know that some weeks it will be more and some weeks not so much, and even some weeks (gasp) a gain of .2 or even 1 whole pound. I am so glad that I am on SP and I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Hi! I'm fairly new to SP, having joined about one week ago. So far, I love it and I'm SO glad that I joined! I know that I have a long road ahead of me, considering that I would like to lose about 130 pounds. But all journeys begin with the first step, which I've already taken. One of the major reasons I joined was to hopefully get some support. I'm so blessed to have a VERY supportive husband, but I can't say the same thing about some of my friends, and especially NOT about my extended family. I feel as if my self esteem has been chipped away by negative comments, and I've often been made to feel invisible. So here I am, ready to pull myself out of this rut I've been in, and CHANGE MY LIFE. I will no longer be the invisible woman! I will make myself a priority and focus on my goals. I can do this--I will do this!!!

Wow, all these night owls. I'm usually heading to bed at 8:30 pm. Getting up at 4:30 every morning means I have to head to bed early.

I usually don't have a problem falling asleep either. I have the same routine every night. Get in bed - read for 10 or 15 minutes. Then lights out, roll over and asleep in five minutes or less.

My room is dark, very dark once the light is out. I even have the clock face turned away from me so that if I should wake up I don't see what time it is. I find that not being able to see the clock face makes it much easier for me to fall back asleep because I'm not worrying about how long it has been since I last looked at the clock or even how soon it will be before I have to get up.

And during the day even cloudy days - I try to get outside for at least 10 minutes and look at the sky and (if sunny) feel the sun on my skin and face. I find this helps me with my sleep cycle also.

54BABY & BronxNancy: I am a night owl. I am an insomniac. I am up and down all night. I usually don't go to bed before 2am. Then I am up and down all night going to the bathroom and checking emails. If you ever need to talk.. just post to me and I'll talk or respond as quickly as I can. WE can do this! Love ya, Dawn

KATERYN: Good to see you posting today. I was adopted and feel very blessed so thank you for adopting your daughter. I am sure that she's blessed too! I hope that your day is going well.

Reenka: If I didn't welcome you in this thread.. know that I am very glad to have you on the TEAM. I know that I welcomed you for sure in an other thread. We're happy you've joined us on the path the health and happiness.

Nancy: I am glad that you are having a healthier eating weekend. You'll figure out the tracker soon enough. Believe me. I am about brain dead when it comes to computers and that has finally sunk in pretty good. Keep up the good work my friend.

54BABY: Welcome to the team. If you have any questions, just ask folks.. everyone is so willing to help. We're just glad that you've made the decision to change your life for the better. I have over 200 pounds to lose so I know what you mean about it seeming a bit overwhelming at times.. but WE CAN DO IT!!!!

TEAM: Have a great Sunday. I need to get it in gear and get over to the pool before I run out of time. I'll post more later. Love ya, Dawn emoticon

good morning everyone, i am glad to be here, Sunday am, and just having tea and doing my check in.

i have been having a "party" every friday night until monday. for some reason have it in my mind, that i can eat whatever i want, and not gain wt. what a concept.

Yesterday, i had breakfast, lunch and dinner, and two snacks, i usually skip b and lunch, and then go hog wild,

I feel better this morning, and am off to make a healty b/fast.

i have been recording my food, daily but seems too tricky with all the technology, i will get it soon,

good luck, and have a great sunday, Nancy,

Reenka and others, welcome and welcome back.

I'm happy to see more people posting. I'm going to have to start keeping a pad and pen by my computer so I can take notes while I read your messages and then give you each a tailored shoutout.

Just know - some days are going to be tougher than others. Weekends are still my biggest downfall. They are always so unstructured and that is what does me in. What can I say - I'm a non-comformist from way back.

I too am single. But, I have an adopted 10 year old daughter. So, I have my own family and she keeps me muy busy.

Hi all,

I just joined the site 3 days ago. I agree that it is intimidating learning how to navigate the site and it is intimidating thinking about the weight loss journey. I am 52 and want to lose 128 pounds. I am single and would like to meet a wonderful man and not weigh 307 pounds while doing so. I am concentrating on making very small changes and not projecting into the future. When I start thinking too big or too much into the future I get overwhelmed. My goals for August are to learn the food tracker and just explore the site. I picked a very slow weight loss speed of 3/4 pound a week and that will take 3 years. I know I need to focus on the journey and each day, each small goal. I appreciated all the comments and advise on this forum.

Hi Carol! and welcome.

First off - you know you have a problem after three or four days.

Well, first thing you need to do is to retrain your thinking about this site and its purpose in your life. We're here to help you retrain your self into good food and exercise habits. We're not going to beat you up over breaking training. Cuz you're the one retraining you. Just take it easy. Take on one new thing a week and take the entire week to master it.

I started with my breakfast's. Then I moved on to Lunches. Then I tackled water. Then evening meals. I'm working on my eating out habits now.

It's not as fast of progress as some - but I'm not in a race. I'm must trying to get healthy and find balance in my life to stay healthy.
