Hi. Welcome to the team. You are so right about sodium. There is a lot of sodium in cottage cheese. That is a real big diet food yet it is loaded with sodium. Milk has a lot of sodium. I was the type of person that salter her food before even tasting it, and then decided it wasn't salty enough. I use to eat nothing but frozen foods. Nuke it was my motto. I would salt the frozen dinners, I mean a lot. I still eat quite a few frozen dinners but don't salt them, and can taste the salt. I am under 2300mg 97% of the time. I see my sister and BIL on Christmas Eve and Day only. They were shocked when I didn't salt my food. They place a salt shaker by my place setting and noticed I didn't use it. They also noticed I took the vegetables before the butter was added. The Dr. told me if you go over 2300mg to drink an extra 10 ounces of water for ever 1000mg.

I went to leave you a spark goodie and you don't have a spark page. To get all you can out of the SP experience may I suggest you make a spark page and keep it public. Please feel free to browse my page and see all that you can do with them. Virtual goodies, blogs and members can leave you supportive comments. I love getting up and seeing I have a comment from a friend or a goodie. You don't and shouldn't put anything real personal. Best feature, you can add friends. If you want you can add me as a spark friend and I will add you when you create a page.

Welcome. Spark People teaches a lot through its tools and articles. There isn't a day I am on this site I don't learn something. You will be both learning and achieving so much here. I agree with the others about the sodium - processed food is usually loaded with salt. If you are eating processed food with each meal, cutting that back to two meals alone will really help. Over time, you won't miss the salt. In fact, now I react to many processed foods, e.g., canned soup, as "too salty".

Welcome. I lowered my sodium for most meals and really enjoy the flavor without the added salt. The lower sodium foods often have rich flavor. I like the seasonings that are low or no sodium as well.

The less processed your foods are, the lower the sodium content in general. Canned foods can often be rinsed to lower the sodium content a little, but I usually count the listed sodium anyway.

Small changes really do add up.

You don't have to be PERFECT to start. Take your time and make SMALL changes and pretty soon you will be seeing results. Sodium is a constant struggle until you wean yourself off of a lot of added salt and processed foods.

Hi, it's my first day tracking and I have learned a lot. Especially sodium contents in food, it's gonna be tough. I need to cut down on sodium and felt helpless, it seems to be everywhere. But since I'm tracking I have such a better idea of how much is in foods, and I'm learning there are sodium low and free foods! I'm looking forward to continuing with SparkPeople and learning so much more. . . . I have to cut my cholesterol, too. lol
