It really depends. If your counting just to count then it's up to you. Juice, iced tea, seltzer, milk etc. are all fluids and could count towards your intake just as much as plain water. If you insist on tracking your intake I'd choose a method and stay consistent.

Technically speaking, though (and this is really important IF your doctor has put you on a fluid restriction for any reason)...Ensure is about 76% water (may vary depending on the specific variety), so one 8 oz bottle would be about 180 mL water.

I guess, in part, the answer would depend on the reason why you are using it. IF your Dr or Registered Dietitian suggested it, then I would ask them. If you aren't on any medically restricted fluid intake, then I would be guided by thirst and the colour of your urine combined. Generally the rule of thumb IS pale straw/lemon colour is excellent and if it is clear you can afford to cut back a little, but some medications and food can alter the colour of your urine.

Remember, unless there is a health issue, there is no proof that a person MUST drink 8 glasses of water/fluid a day, because everyone's needs differ depending on
size
climate
exercise/activities
sweating
medical issues

Even the amount of sodium you eat will change the amount of fluid needed.

Why are you counting your water intake? That is going to be your guide on whether or not you count it. If your doctor is telling you to limit your intake, ask your doctor whether or not Ensure would count towards your totals. If you are counting because you feel like it, why are you counting and does Ensure contribute to that goal or not?

-google first. ask questions later.

A caution on the urine color approach. Alcohol, tea, coffee, etc. can lead to a false flag.

That would be up to you, but I would not count it.

Rule of thumb... if your urine is a light straw color, you are taking in enough fluids (Ensure being counted or not).

It's a drink, but I wouldn't consider it as part of your water intake. If it has calories, you can log it with your food, but I wouldn't count it towards water.
