Note: I used this as the starting point for a blog I posted today.

This speaks to my mental status. Be all in or all out. This is about commitment.
For me, it's more than that. When my mind relaxes and allows off-plan behavior, it can be very hard to get back to a strong place.

Life happens. It's important to be able to flex.
But 99.9% of the time, I am stronger when I don't deviate. I can do a lot of damage in a short amount of time. Twice last month I gained 10+ pounds in less than 3 days.
My loss is steady if I stay vigilant.

We know it's not an all or nothing journey. If we "screw up," the journey doesn't end there. Doing something off-plan is not a license to throw our plan overboard the rest of the day or week. It's not about perfection.

This is a lifestyle, not a diet. It has no end. I will have to be mindful of what I eat the rest of my life.
That's why I love my plan. IF and OMAD tell me WHEN to eat, not WHAT to eat. I can embrace this for the rest of my life.

Maybe when I get to a reasonable, healthy weight, I will be able to do meals twice a day. For now, it's more important to get this unhealthy excess weight off.

I will never be able to go back to eating willy-nilly. I won't be able to snack all day. For me, IF is a wonderful tool to cut out snacking. I may have to do that the rest of my life.
Occasionally it makes me sad that I will not be able to indulge, eat what I want when I want, eat when others are eating. When I hear a pop can opening in the middle of the night or someone raiding the fridge, I can't do that...and it makes me momentarily sad. I can't stop at fast food places whenever I want. I can't overeat at holidays. I will never be able to go back to that lifestyle.
Choices have consequences. I want to play without the consequences. That's not how it works.

My body is very happy that I am doing IF and OMAD. It is trying to reverse damage done over the years. My mental process must accept and work with my body to become healthy.

Broke the water-fast yesterday. Down 1 pound this morning.

I do just as well losing weight when I do an IF and OMAD day. There is no huge difference when I water-fast.

The hardest part is that OMAD days require planning and mindfulness, maybe even a bit of will-power. Once I eat, my mind goes to food again that day. Should I have this? Should I have that? No, I already had my one meal for the day. It's not a struggle but it requires mindfulness. It's surpising how easy it used to be to pop in a bite of this or that in passing. That's extra calories. It has nothing to do with hunger.

When I fast, that doesn't happen. No limit on water, black coffee or tea without additives...though my usual amount is 1 cup a day, occasionally more. When I fast, my mind doesn't think about whether I can have something to eat. I already know the answer. I do occasionally think about WHEN I will break the fast, especially if it was not pre-planned for a specific number of days. I consider what I should eat when I break the fast. That's called planning ahead.

2.2 pounds to go to break that major milestone goal.

Grands aren't coming. Trouble with heater in their car. Shall I make it Day 4 of water fasting? Fasting does marvelous things for the body. It allows the body to repair itself. By Day 3, the body is getting into the best stuff with autophagy.
However, as to weight loss, I have just as good results when I faithfully do intermittent fasting and one-meal-a-day.

Down 0.8 this morning. It's natural to feel disappointed.I shouldn't feel that way. It's a loss. Celebrate it. The body works on it's own schedule. Sometimes it loses pounds. Sometimes it loses inches. The body knows what it is doing.

Day 3 of water fast almost complete. Sis made chunky applesauce earlier today. RJ cooked a scrumptious smelling rice and meat dish tonight. I took a nap while she was cooking so I would finish the day strong.
Tonight she made cookie dough to bake later. There are no calories from smelling. The grands will be here for a few days so she is preparing food now. That makes serving meals simpler when the kids are here and requiring so much attention.

Day 2 of water fast completed. Down 4 pounds from yesterday morning.

None of this was planned. I've been losing daily and steadily since the advent of the mouth pain, Nov 21-22. Only 15 more days till the root canal appt. Eating IF and OMAD, eating non-fibrous and softer foods, taking the antibiotic since Nov 25, is all helping ease the pain.

Faithfully doing IF and OMAD last week, no wavering, gave weight loss a boost.

Sunday. I wasn't hungry, so why should I eat? It became Day 1 of water fast. Only 1 cup of black coffee.
Monday, still not hungry. Day 2 of water fast. A few more cups of black coffee throughout the day.
Tuesday. Weight loss has been spectacular. I planned a light meal for today to break the fast. Still not hungry. Should I make it Day 3 of the water fast?

Grands will probably be here the rest of the week. Fasting is hard when they eat all their meals here. Even then, I will faithfully stick to IF and OMAD.

Only 4 pounds to go to reach that major milestone goal! I have not seen that number on the scale since Dec 2010. I am so excited. This time I am not going to ever see these higher numbers on the scale again. No more yo-yo.

Last week: successfully did 6 days of IF and OMAD. Good loss last week.
This week: completing 2nd day of unplanned water fasting. (It's Monday.) Still not hungry. We'll see how it goes this week.
I am getting so close to that next huge milestone goal. Only 8 pounds to go.

Snowed today. It's supposed to stop tomorrow AM. Most of what we had in the morning melted. There's a little accumulation now.

The salads look so good. 17 more days till the root canal appt. Then I can eat regular food! Salad is in the plan.

Three things I'm thankful for today (besides the usual, like family, friends, home, and faith):

1 I've been having my OMAD meal between 4-5 PM. I was not hungry today. What a lovely gift. Count it as an unplanned water-fast day.

2. Christmas shopping is nearly done, and packages have arrived.

3. Christmas decorating is done. Thank you, Jessi. She did more than we usually do.

Feeling very happy today. Sun has been shining through the windows like it does on the brightest Summer day. We are due for snow the next couple of days.

I am working on changing my Spark page from Autumn to Christmas. Haven't found exactly the right pictures yet. They have to talk to me.

Down 2.2 pounds from yesterday's weight. Exciting!

5.8 pounds to go to meet the IF team 25 pound challenge.
11 pounds to go to meet that personal major milestone goal. I am going to stay the course this time. I have not weighed that since Dec 2010. Wow!

Roasted Veggie Salad

Salad
2 cups (~1 large sweet potato) peeled and diced sweet potato
2 cups (~1/2 of 1 squash) peeled and diced butternut squash
2 cups (~1 large) thinly sliced red onion
fine sea salt and freshly cracked pepper
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 tablespoon olive oil
4-6 ounces baby spinach

Croutons
1/2 loaf day-old French bread
3 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2 teaspoons mined garlic
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Dressing (this lemon one or see the notes for a balsamic dressing)
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon olive oil
1 and 1/2 tablespoons honey
1/2 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon EACH: Italian seasoning, minced garlic

Good way to use leftover roasted vegetables.

I think I would omit the homemade croutons.

Without the croutons, it is probably healthier than the Autumn Crunch Salad recipe that I posted yesterday.

Autumn Crunch Pasta Salad

5 ounces fresh spinach half a 10 ounce bag (6 cups; 140g)
1 and 1/2 cups (150g) dry small pasta
3/4 cup (87g) chopped celery
1 large Granny Smith Apple, thinly sliced or chopped
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 can (15 oz; 425g) drained mandarin oranges (or 2 mandarin oranges)
3/4 cup (91g) dried cranberries
1/3 cup (41g) pecans, coarsely chopped (See Note 1)
Optional: Feta cheese

Dressing
2 tablespoons EACH: apple cider vinegar, white wine vinegar
2-4 tablespoons white sugar
1/8 teaspoon each: paprika & onion powder
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 tablespoon poppyseeds
Fine sea salt and freshly cracked pepper

Swap out dried tart cherries for the dried cranberries
Use goat cheese instead of feta cheese
Swap out candied pecans for the toasted pecans

Unfortunately this Autumn Crunch Pasta Salad doesn’t sit or store well once dressed. The dressing will wilt the spinach, the apples begin to brown, and the pecans get soggy once dressed.
The salad can be made in advance as long as everything is stored separately and the apple is cut right before enjoying. Assemble and add the dressing right before eating.

Serves 6-8, so what size did she use to figure the nutrients?

It has pasta and fruit. It's higher in calories, sugar, and carbs.

Dried fruit contains more sugar than raw fruit. Sweet cherries or grapes are better for us than dried cherries.
I would dice the apple to make it easier to eat.

It appeals to me. Crunchy. Fresh and colorful. It could be scaled back to make one serving.

Comfort food!

Thanksgiving yesterday. One meal, 1155 calories.
Down 2 pounds since yesterday morning. I am happy about that.

Official Spark weigh-in today. Down 12.6 from last Friday.

3.6 pounds to go to get back to my lowest weight this year (October 30, 2020).

7.8 pounds to go to reach the IF team goal, to lose 25 pounds between June 28 and December 13, 2020.

13 pounds to go to reach a major personal goal and start on a new set of numbers on the scale. Every time I get close, my weight bounces back up. I really thought I would reach it in 2019. I was 16.8 pounds away from it Nov 20, 2019. I was 15 pounds away from it Dec 31, 2019. I was 9.2 pounds away from it Oct 30, 2020. As of today, it is 13 pounds away. I WILL make this goal this year!

Three Blessings to be thankful for today.
1. Weight is down 6.4 pounds in 3 days. Carefully eating one meal a day, trying not to waken the mouth pain, as little as possible. 21 days to go until the root canal.

2. Kids will be here tonight for Thanksgiving.

3. I don't have to do the cooking for the holiday.

I am feeling happy and blessed today.

Three things I am happy for today, beside the usual thankfulness for family and those dear to me.
1. My weight is dropping. *Big smile* An inner happy dance because I know this time when I can't eat much (until the root canal) is a blessing in disguise. It should give me a BIG boost towards that huge milestone goal that I've been flirting with over a year. I am going to make it before the end of the year!

2. Love the grands dearly but they are home today! It's a day to get caught up on many things, including sleep!
A different set of grands dropped by this morning. They love Sis' waffles. I did not have any. I loved on the newborn (10 days old now). Below is a picture of her when she was 3 days old.

3. Cold and gloomy outside. Warm and lovely inside. The snow is melting.

I plan to do desk work today, make business calls.

Life is good.

Root canal appt with a specialist on Dec 16. The denist prescribed an antibiotic to take now.

It is too painful to eat real food. It may be a liquid diet until then. It wasn't too painful to have cream soup today. Not a lot of chewing.
It will force me to cut calories and lose weight!

Physical pain today because of dental problem. I broke a tooth in March but couldn't see the dentist because our state is on Covid lockdown. No pain during that time. Finally got to see him in October.
After the local anesthesia wore off, I had pressure pain. Gave it a few days to see if the pain would wear off. The tooth broke again, taking with it the work he did in October. Wednesday he prepped it and put on a temporary crown. I floss every time I eat so the gum is very tender.
A crown in another part of my mouth came off the next day. The broken tooth is so short that I am having trouble keeping the crown on and have been back to the office several times to have it put back on. Wednesday he did a root canal and put in an anchor pin, building the tooth up and putting on a temporary crown.
I go back in December to have both crowns put in...if our governor doesn't lock us down as threatened.

Pain after I ate and flossed today. Flossing creates gum pain, trying to clean "food trap" areas around the base of the tooth. Sensodyne toothpaste helps a little.

My program is intermittent fasting and OMAD. Maybe this pain will motivate me to go for an extended fast to avoid pain.

A little tongue in cheek humor, posted by a friend on Facebook. I think I may have seen some of this before.

Holiday Eating Tips
1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Holiday spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they’re serving rum balls.
2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It’s rare… You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It’s not as if you’re going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It’s a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It’s later than you think. It’s Christmas!
3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That’s the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.
4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they’re made with skim milk or whole milk. If it’s skim, pass. Why bother? It’s like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.
5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Holiday party is to eat other people’s food for free. Lots of it. Hello?
6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year’s. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you’ll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.
7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don’t budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They’re like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you’re never going to see them again.
8. Same for pies. Apple , Pumpkin , Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don’t like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day ?
9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it’s loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.
10. One final tip: If you don’t feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven’t been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner. Remember this motto to live by:
“Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand and any indulgence in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming “WOO HOO what a ride!!!!"

Note: posted part of this as a blog 11/24/20.

I recently discover the British show, Secret Eaters. Secret eaters seem to like Salad Cream.

What is salad cream?
"Salad cream is a creamy, pale yellow condiment based on an emulsion of about 25–50 percent oil in water, emulsified by egg yolk and acidulated by spirit vinegar. It may include other ingredients such as sugar, mustard, salt, thickener, spices, flavouring and colouring. The first ready-made commercial product was introduced in the United Kingdom in 1914, where it is used as a salad dressing and a sandwich spread.
Historically, salad cream, often mentioned in Victorian sources, consisted of "hard-boiled eggs puréed with cream, mustard, salt and vinegar" - per Wikipedia

How is salad cream different than mayonnaise?
"Salad Cream uses more vinegar than oil whilst mayonnaise is the other way round. For example, in Heinz Salad Cream is just 22% Rapeseed Oil whilst Heinz mayonnaise is 68%. ... The minor difference in the amount of egg yolk also makes a big difference, with mayo using more than Salad Cream."

It is not just for salads. A more common usage is a spread on sandwiches. It can be used on beans on toast. On Secret Eaters, some people squeezed it on French fries.

Beans on toast is common in the UK.

The UK uses salad cream like the USA uses Ranch dressing. They do not taste the same.

One of the Secret Eaters used salad cream on a chip butty.

What is a chip butty?
"A chip butty is a sandwich made with chips (i.e. French fried potatoes) on buttered white bread or a bread roll, often with an added condiment such as brown sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise, or malt vinegar. The chip butty can be found in fish and chip shops and other casual dining establishments in the United Kingdom." -per Wikipedia
A chip shop said the chip butty is about 700 calories.

by Greg's Kitchen 2/17/20

He says, "Today I recreate the Hungry Jacks Bacon Cheese Chip Butty, using only 4 ingredients, this tastes better than the real one, I hope you enjoy it "

He cooked frozen french fries (chips) in an air fryer. Browned up diced pieces of bacon. He put melted cheese spread on the inside of top and bottom bun, laid the cooked fries on the bun, then bacon crumbles, more cheese spread, more fries and bacon. It must have been good because he made caveman noises when he ate it.

It did not look appetizing to my untrained palate. Starch on starch. Carb overload. I have seen some burgers in the States that have a few fries/chips, shoestring potatoes or french fried onions sandwiched in the bun.

Chip Butty Burger King
by Legion of Weirdos - Christopher Mast 2/20.20

Burger King in New Zealand claims to have invented a new sandwich, England says, "Cheeky buggers, that's our chip butty, dodgy wankers!" It's basically a French fry sandwich."
He bought the ingredients from Burger King and assembled it himself.

On a side note, mayonnaise and Miracle Whip are common in the USA. There is a big difference between them. People become adamant about the one they prefer.

"Miracle Whip is made by Kraft Foods. ... She says Miracle Whip has half the fat of mayonnaise, which is made from egg yolks, lemon juice or vinegar and vegetable oil. Another difference is that Miracle Whip has more sugar added; it contains both high-fructose corn syrup and sugar. Mayo contains little if any sugar." ...www.duluthnewstribune.com

Which is healthier?
"Miracle Whip contains less fat and fewer calories than mayonnaise. Because Miracle Whip contains about half the calories of mayo, it's a good alternative for those who are counting calories." -www.healthline.com

"Salad cream has around half the calories, and a third of the fat compared to mayonnaise. The sugar and salt are increased because of this, but not to the level of some other dressings we looked at. So, using a small amount of salad cream instead of mayonnaise could make quite a significant difference." - www.diabetes.org.uk

That seems confusing. Is this what it is saying?
Miracle Whip has sugar that mayonnaise doesn't have, but Miracle Whip has fewer calories than mayonnaise. The salad cream has fewer calories than mayonnaise, so that would be the best choice for someone watching calories.

Pure, White, and Deadly is a book that started Harry [ @I_ROBOT ] off on his current journey. There are several books that tell us the same thing - it's not so easy to take the necessary action - good luck!

Here's a nice one for you!

Sugar: The Bitter Truth.
University of California Television (UCTV)
Recorded on 05/26/2009.

Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin.

He recommends the book, PURE, WHITE, AND DEADLY by John Yudkin, Viking Press

1. Get rid of all sugared liquids. Only water and milk.
2. Eat your carbohydrates with fiber.
3. Wait 20 minutes for second portions.
4. Buy your screen time minutes. Spend one minute in physical activity for every minute of screen time.

Why is exercise important in obesity?
It is NOT to burn calories. 20 minutes of jogging burns off 1 chocolate chip cookie.
1. It improves skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity.
2. It reduces stress, and resultant cortisol release.
3. It makes the TCA cycle run faster, and detoxifies fructose, improving hepatic insulin sensitivity.

Fructose is a posion. When God made poison, He furnished the antidote. Sugar cane has fiber. You don't eat the stick. You suck the sweetness out.

Reduce stress to reduce hunger.

Why is fiber important in obesity?
1. Reduces the rate of intestinal carbohydrate absorption. reducing insulin response.
2. Increases speed of transit of intestinal contents to ileum, to raise PYY, and induce satiety.
3. Inhibits absorption of some free fatty acis to the colon, whjich are metabolized by colonic bacteria to short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) which supress insulin.

Fructose is a carbohydrate.
Fructose is metabolize as fat.
Fructose is a toxin.

Why are 6 month olds fatter today? Sugar in formula
Why are children fatter today? Sugar in juices
If mom consumes fructose when pregnant, baby is set up for being fat.

FDA regulates acute toxins, not chronic toxins like fructose.

There is good protein and bad protein, good carbs and bad carbs.

Summary:
A calorie is not a calorie, and fructose is not glucose.

You are not what you eat. You are what you do with what you eat.

Hepatic fructose metabolism leads to:
-hypertension
-de novolepogeneses, dyslipidemia, and hepatic steatosis inflammation
-hepatic insulin resistance
-obesity
-CNS leptin resistance, promoting continuous consumption

Fructose ingestion interferes with obesity intervention.

Fructose is a chronic hepatotoxin. It is alcohol without the buzz. Alcohol is metabolized by the brain; fructose is not.

FDA can't and won't regulate it. FDA wants to sell food we produce to other countries. The fox is in charge of the hen house.

by OMAD Revolution/Joe Holman. License to Binge: Why You Always Come Back to OMAD.

People forget they came from eating little meals throughout the day. You get an insulin reaction when you eat and it stalls your progress and takes years. It is harder eating more frequently, not easier. Discipline is involved. It is more logical to eat once than to try to eat throughout the day with moderation.
Apply this to scenarios where you binge. If you are out of control, remember your motives. Eating more often allows you license to binge. A small portion leads to dissatisfaction and bingeing. Bingeing is not metabolic. It's mental. You think bingeing will get it out of your system. It doesn't stop there. It's never as good when you get it as when you wanted it. It's better to want food than to have it. That's the contradiction. You really don't want moderation. Be honest. You take a small portion, you will need more self control to stop there. It's a game.
With OMAD you are not preoccupied with food. The less you think about food, the better it is. Talking is not doing. It is easy to talk. It is not easy to do. It's hard when you have to keep making a decision whether to give in and eat as opposed to having one meal, decision already made. When you want something, you can have it tomorrow when you eat. You like the thought of quitting but do not like quitting or you would have already done it.
Every time you binge, you are playing a game with yourself and not being real. You set up a pattern in your mind so your mind gets a reward when you do that.
You haven't accepted empty is the new full. You have it all when you are empty. You are a self-sustaining being. You are human so you will get to eat again.
Be honest. Bingeing is always a bad deal. You are not being honest about why you want to do it.
There is no easy way. The harder you struggle on OMAD, the better the results because it's transactional. The more you put into it, the more you get out of it.
The goal of our body is overeating. People overeat on healthy food, junk food, mock food. The brain is trying to work around your dishonesty and keep you eating. Stop playing games.

Rant:How You Don't Respect Yourself
by OMAD Revolution/Joe Holman

Simulation hypothesis. Some people think we are players on some vast computer. Life is like a video game, without consequences.
People have a lot of intelligence but lack wisdom. We're not in touch with our world..No real connections. Reliance on distortion of reality. We spend all of his time looking for meaning when we could be just living life and finding fulfillment in relationships that are there. Neurosis and obsessions develop, all of these illnesses including overeating, bingeing, purging, alcoholism and drugs.

A satiated mind creates satiation for all of the human appetites. If your mind is poisoned, everything else is poisoned. The fact that we live in a world where people question whether or not we are real is so sad because you disrespect yourself when you say stupid things like that. You disrespect yourself and your abilities that you know you have, your ability to do good at whatever you are good at. All of the things you've grown to know and love you distrust all because of a whimsical theory. You disrespect your mind, therefore you disrespect your body.
The intellectuals of our time are destroying society because they themselves are subject to a mind virus. It makes them question their very existence. And when you question your very existence, you don't know right from wrong. As a result you give yourself to addictions. Eating when you are not hungry because you are bored is a sign of an unsatiated mind. Not only do you disrespect your mind and your sense of self, your talents, and your innate abilities, but you disrespect your body. You suffer from the results of overeating. You also disrespect your finances because you have to support your habit.
Everything is connected. It's all about self mastery. A satiated mind is the key to everything else. Once you have your priorities in the right place, all of these crazy notions will go away.

A winter's day
In a deep and dark December
I am alone
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow

I am a rock
I am an island

I've built walls
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate
I have no need of friendship, friendship causes pain
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain

I am a rock
I am an island

And a rock feels no pain
And an island never cries

The future looks bleak. We did what we could.
Our responsibility now is to take care of ourselves. Do the things that bring us peace. How a person votes says a lot about their character and values. Minimize contact when necessary. Limit time spent with the media and unsocial media.

I feel good about the proactive steps I've taken to create a peaceful haven.
