As a teenager. It was linked to my first bout with severe depression. I think finally getting my depression under control has been key to finally losing and keeping the weight off. (So far, so good anyway - hope to keep it up!)

Starting Weight: 268 lbs. (November 2010)
Quasi-Maintenance: 165 lbs. (June 2011)
Goal Weight: 150 lbs. (reached December 8, 2011)

Size 22W to Size 4

Currently maintaining within 5 lbs. (+ or -) of goal. I weigh daily, but also use a tape measure and the fit of my clothes to guage how well I'm doing.

it slowly started when I turned 40, then in April I broke my ankle, I was pretty much riding the sofa for over 100 days and finding comfort in food. The weight really started to pile on :(

I was never overweight when I was a child. I had depression and 2 back-to-back pregnancies and I gained like crazy. This was 43 years ago and the "baby fat" is still hanging on, lol.

When I started drinking a 44 oz Big Gulp of soda every day. Gained 60 lbs.
Stopped drinking soda entirely and only water and 35 lbs have left.

I was always bigger than the other girls but I gained most of my weight following the birth of my son. I went from 186 to my high weight of 332 by the time my son was about 10 years old. It was gradual over time it felt like I just woke up one day and couldn't fit through turnstiles or buckle seat belts.

Fith grade- I ballooned up, looking back that was the year I became a latchkey kid. On my own before and after school, woke myself up, dressed for school and met the bus. My mother was working out of town and my Dad did too. So there were lots of hours I was on my own. But I always saw myself as overweight even when I wasn't. And kids were cruel sometimes, "Fatty fatty two by four...." Crazy how that never leaves your memory.

When I got blood clots in both lungs 2 years ago.Recently had hip bone removal, 2 sinus bone removal, 3 gum operations, 6 operations total in 2.5 hours in hospital. The bone removal was used in gums , regarding weight, for the first time in 35 years of being the same size clothes I went from size 12 - size 18 clothes in 8 months as I gained 10" on my waist,20% body fat with not being able to cook properly or exercise at the time. I gained 30 pounds and have lost it all including the fat% and my waist has gone back to normal. Now I want to lose a little more weight to reach my final goal. So a health problem and not a weight problem. I am 55 years old. I have had 6 operations lately, 3 in my gums, so on liquid diet for now & have started losing weight because of it. What a way to lose weight because of digestive issues from operation that takes time to heal from steroids, gas and Tylenol. I am off of steroids now but have nausea at all times.

When my medications were changed, a few years ago. My appetite was out of control, I was hungry constantly no matter what I ate. My medications have been changed again and I feel finally like I have a chance to lose the weight I gained.

For me it was in my 20s, during the 6 months or so after the sudden death of a close friend. This was also when I really began to struggle with depression. Fortunately, I was able to catch both problems before they became very major (the depression was still very mild and I'd only just ticked up to an "overweight" BMI by a pound or two), and was able to take effective steps to deal with them within the next 6 months.

2nd grade..........started dieting age 13, lost and gained many times. After having kids, gained and lost, still working on it as a senior. There is no long lasting cure, fads be damned, “experts”, no help, but they make money. There is way more to this than the eating and exercise routine........even when you think you are satisfied, it can hit you again.......

Had 4 kids. No weight issues.
Quit smoking. Gained a few pounds. Started smoking again. Repeated 3 times.
Haven’t started smoking since the last time I quit in 2015. Kept the weight though.
Diagnosed with cancer 8 months after I quit. Meds and steroids caused weight gain. Chemo started menopause and the medication I have to take also causes weight gain.
Was just diagnosed with lupus and I have no energy to do much of anything, let alone exercise.
Between quitting smoking, medication, menopause and lupus I have put on about 60 pounds.
But, I have really started watching what I eat and decided that if I only have energy to do one thing in a day, that one thing is going to be exercise so I have been walking my dog about 5km or more, every day and I am managing to hold my weight steady which is better than gaining more.

I wouldn't have thought puberty would cause weight gain, but rather the opposite. Interesting.

My wife was on the chubby side when we married. She gave birth to our first boy and her metabolism went nuts. We have eight kids and it never slowed. You'd never know she had even ONE child. Something to say about being blessed with kind genes!

First time with puberty. Lot of soda, fast food, bad snack food. Didn't lose that until early 20s. Then in late 40s we quit smoking and menopause hit. That prompted life style changes we have today.

Puberty -- the hormones kicked in and within a few weeks, my body totally changed. I've been fighting my weight and hating my body since then.

My earliest memories are as a 5 year old and I was already overweight and ashamed to take my shirt off. The only time I was ever at a "normal weight" was when I was in the Army. Even when I did triathlons and refereed soccer games I did it at a heavier weight than my counterparts.

In early childhood my diet was primarily processed foods loaded with sugar when they first became popular.
By junior year high school, I went into fad diets and got rid of the weight. In college I often walked from home to school (5 miles one way) rather than take the bus.
Got pneumonia and was very ill for 6 months and which drastically reduced my activity level. I gained. Once I recovered, most of my jobs were primarily desk jobs. I gained some more. It did not help that I had a poor idea of good nutrition or proper portions. Unfortunately, my addiction to processed foods continued. The smallest portion on my plate was always the veggie. And the scale kept going up.
I decided to join a weight control center at a hospital which advocated a 1000 calorie diet. I am 5’11”. They didn’t account for a difference in calories based on height…only sex. I was very into exercise. I would walk before going to work. I would walk during lunch. I would go to the gym after work. I took the weight off quickly but didn’t really learn anything about healthy eating. A few negative life events happened...death of a loved one, job layoff, stress…. I went back to my normal bad eating habits, and the numbers on the scale crept up once again. Another attempt at taking it off quickly…. Another series of life events…another cycle of going back to old habits…. repeat, repeat, repeat.

Then a friend at work introduced me to spark. I got into using all the tools. I got support from the community. I got educated on how to live a healthy lifestyle. I may regress to old habits from time to time…but awareness and quick recovery always at hand.

And, was there a trigger event that started the weight gain? (i.e. Age 23 after having a child or after receiving an injury.)
