When you could actually buy something for a penny -- granted it was only a piece of gum.

Remember those little sweet wax lips? You would wear them and eat them at the same time but the wax tasted sweet but you couldn't swallow it. Also remember the little edible necklaces you could buy for 2 cents?
Driving to town in the station wagon with my family to go to A & W. We'd pull up to an orange speaker in the parking lot. Dad would order for everyone and food would be delivered by a girl on roller skates and the food would all go on an orange tray that clipped on to the car window. How cool was that?! Root beer always came in a heavy glass mug.

PENNY CANDY! That was such a big thrill to be able to run to the little corner store with a pocket of pennies and come out with a tiny brown bag filled with swedish fish, the wax soda bottles filled with juice, sour patch kids, etc. You can't do that anymore.
