Automats in NYC

Only three channels on TV and I was my dad's remote control.

Scrounging the neighborhood for bottles to return to the store for 2 cents each. Six of them got me a comic book -- mostly Archies.

Sleds with runners, wool snow suits, 10 cent comic books, test pattern on the TV at night, short hand, wooden skate boards, oil checks at the gas station, smelling our test papers for the smell of the mimeograph fluid (sp?) , diners with jukeboxes at the tables, English 3 speed bikes, My Friend Flicka and Fury, Red Skelton (Freddie the Freeloader), Jack Parr, Don Ho, Twilight Zone, Chiller, Lost in Space, Bean Bag Chairs, Frances the Talking Mule, Barrettes for hair. Much more....

When Kennedy was president, no remotes, dial telephones

when radio was the medium of communication by all prior to television way back in the1940's.

In the early 50's with black white tv rabbit ears and you had to get up and turn the channel or bang on the side of the tv when it went haywire and you walked home in the rain snow or whatever from a country school house because your parents were working or farming and could not pick you up, no one was a sissy then.

Animals were first sent into space, and you got up early to see the liftoffs of humans going up in space, you got up early!

Rubiks Cube

Fallout shelters, and you hid under your desk at school for air raid sirens test, or if there was a test for tornaodes you got under your desk and hoped it was not real.

The inside sandbox as it was either snowing or rainy or both outside, so they made a table and put sand in it and you played indoors with the sand.

No indoor restrooms, you had to use the outhouse at school and boy is that cold in the winter, and at home you used a pot indoors as you had no indoor toilet and you had to dump the contents in all weather down the hill in the outhouse.

Or in some places all you had was an outhouse. no running water, it was a pump and you took baths in a big tin tub you had to share water with your brother, so you hoped you got in first, and mom and dad had to use a bigger tub and do the same.

In California, when I was a kid, we had to wait in line for gas (and the lines went on for blocks). You could only get gas on the corresponding day of the last number in your license plate, odd or even.

Five cent Hershey bars. Wonderama with Sonny Fox. No-Cal brand Sodas. Ice Cream trucks withour bullet-proof windows (I live in the Bronx). Fountain pens for everyday use. The soda counter at Woolworth's with balloons you broke to tell you how much you had to pay for an ice cream soda (there was a little piece of paper with a price inside each balloon).

Well I was there. It's where I met my college lover. Soon after we had our first daughter. Which I wanted to name "Faithful," since MaryAnn Faithful was a no show. My love said, "No way!"

I lived in So CA so weather wasn't an issue.Pants were not allowed until I was in the 4th grade-or we went on a field trip they would let it pass.
