National Love Your Pet Day - February A/I BSG Week 3 Blog

Wednesday, February 17, 2021

On February 20th, pet lovers everywhere observe National Love Your Pet Day. This holiday focuses on giving extra attention to our pets. The day encourages pampering our pets and focusing on the special relationship pets hold in our lives.

Bring your pet a special treat, take an extra-long walk or give them more attention. Other ideas include: check that their vaccines are up to date, watch a pet video with them full of cats, dogs and other critters, give them a few extra strokes with the brush while grooming, practice their favorite commands – sit, shake, rollover, play their favorite game or bring out their best toy, inspect their toys to make sure they’re in good shape. Throw out any broken toys, wash their bedding, even if it’s not their laundry day. let them fluff it up just the way they like it. If you don’t have a pet to pamper, you could always do something special for a friend’s pet or go to a pet shelter and take the doggies for a walk or read a book to them or bring a special inexpensive treat for the dogs and cats.

As a kid, we always had a cat. I didn’t think I actually liked dogs. The first dog I ever met jumped on me and tore my dress. I was probably 10 years old. The 2nd dog, I encountered, tried to bite me. With these 2 bad interactions, I was not found of dogs.

When I married my hubby, he had always had dogs growing up. We did have a cat for many years but when the cat passed, we decided to get a dog. The boys were about 10 and 13 and just starting to get involved with hunting. We decided on a Brittney Spaniel so the boys could go pheasant hunting. The dogs name was Dutchman Master Jazz (Dutch for short). He was a pure breed and an excellent hunter. Dutch was definitely my hubby’s dog.

Here's a picture of Dutch and my youngest son after a pheasant hunt back in 2007 (I think)

When Dutch passed. We waited about 5 years and got a Brittney mix; we named her SAM (short for Samantha). She is part Brittney, Corgi and Jack Russel. She is such a sweet dog and wonderful company. SAM is definitely my pup.

Here's a picture of SAM.
