Adding Strength Training?

Where do I even begin? I'm looking at the various machines at my gym and I'll be honest, I don't even know what half of them do. I read that after 40 we start to lose muscle mass. I'm 10 years in, and let's face it, I didn't have a lot of muscle mass to begin with. I've never had much upper body strength. So, I know I need to work on my core muscles. I also know my arms need improvement. But where do I start? How much do I need to lift and for how long? Machines or free weights? I'm so lost! HELP?!!!

    I can empathize, although I'm a decade or so older. It's great that you realize it, at a younger age. Hopefully you found something that works for you. I've done strength training on & off over the years, and have not enjoyed it much, I can notice a difference especially in upper body strength. I walk lots & do fair amount of biking and that I feel has helped my lower body. I'm trying to get back into it using Resistance bands, as they're easy to do at home. SP has lots of good ideas, but it is hard to sort it out on our own. Good Luck on your quest.

    Oh and I would recommend getting a personal trainer for 1-2 sessions to teach you how to use the machines and come up with a routine for you. That's what I did a couple of years ago and it was well worth the money.

    I don't have a gym membership anymore, but I liked doing the machines when I did because I found them pretty easy to do once I looked at the pictures and/or asked an associate how to use them. I found them to be a great workout.

    I do hand weights and body weight exercises now. It's not as good, but it's all I can do.

    I have lost a lot of muscle mass sine stopping weights. Going back to it and seeing a difference. Dead weights seem to always work great.
