Adding Strength Training?

Where do I even begin? I'm looking at the various machines at my gym and I'll be honest, I don't even know what half of them do.
I read that after 40 we start to lose muscle mass. I'm 10 years in, and let's face it, I didn't have a lot of muscle mass to begin with. I've never had much upper body strength.
So, I know I need to work on my core muscles. I also know my arms need improvement. But where do I start? How much do I need to lift and for how long? Machines or free weights? I'm so lost!
HELP?!!!
