Exercise=Stiff Neck

A few days ago I hurt myself while exercising!

Has that ever happened to you?

The mere thought of doing yoga excites me! Doing it calms me.

Last Thursday I decided to get adventurous on the mat and curved my body into a more advance yoga move. Something I have never done before. Result: An excruciatingly painful stiff neck for 2 days!

Yesterday I decide to ease myself back into yoga - gently, with focus and more awareness of my body's responses to movement.

To stay safe, I opted for Adriene's "Yoga for Beginners' Mind."

Adriene prodded me: "Remember your first yoga?"

The memory flashed through my mind: I'm standing - a mountain pose - on my blue mat that's spread on a wooden floor. That was 2008. I was married then. (Now I'm "unmarried" but that's for another blog!)

Adriene guided me to a childlike reminiscing of my first yoga. What was it like? The breathing? The sensations in my tummy? My thighs and feet?

Suddenly I saw a little girl in a flowered red top...I was little girl again...

After some 15 minutes, I felt lighter, more tranquil, more focused. Life has become simpler.

Yoga works well for me. It may not fit other people who are more energetic. Maybe they prefer high impact zumba, kickboxing or taebo.

It's been 12 years since my first yoga exercise. Since then I have explored many types of exercise from kickboxing to hip hop. They leave me too breathless and stressed out! I realized that there's no one size fits all in exercise.

To my delight, I discovered that what suits me are yoga, ballet barre, Pilates and the dances of the 70s and 80s!

Along with that discovery came a greater acceptance of who I truly am - slow like a turtle (ha ha); introspective; predisposed to flowing, less abrupt body movements.

What started with exercising for fitness is turning into a continuing journey of self-discovery, self-care and self-love. Because I love myself more now, I am more able to authentically care for others.

We all have our distinct personal stories about our quest for health and total well-being - with its highs and lows. . . Plateaus... Disappointing setbacks... Surprising detours.

And of course, those mind-blowing victories!

    It sounds like you are one of those fortunate few who have a fitness routine that you truly love. So lucky! I took some yoga and Pilates classes with a friend several years ago and I enjoyed them a lot, but I didn’t enjoy the drive to/from the studio and how much time that aspect added to the class. I do much better with at home routines that I can do anytime I can fit it in. I bought a few yoga dvds back then, I should get them out and add them into my plan!

    I hope your neck has completely recovered!!
