Yellowstone

Saturday, January 18, 2020

Yellowstone is a sweeping (new style) cowboy dynasty series that started in 2018 on Paramount Network. It stars Kevin Costner as John Dutton, a 6th generation billionaire, patriarch of a large family, & owner of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. The ranch itself borders on the Yellowstone National Park, a large Native American reservation, and more land in Montana - it is the largest contiguous ranch in the United States. (Quick info: Yellowstone National Park was the first National Park, & is bordered by Montana, Idaho, & Wyoming. Old Faithful is well known, & erupts out approximately 45-120 minutes for about 1.5 - 5 minutes at a time. The Yellowstone Caldero is actually a supervolcano, considered to be dormant. Anybody else remember when Mount St Helens in Washington state. blew in 1980. Yeah, if the Yellowstone supervolcano blows, most of us are dead. I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, & we’re within range.)

Anyhow, the TV show has YSR (Yellowstone Ranch, I decided to abbreviate) under siege by he Native Americans that want land, land developers want to seize some, and apparently YSP wants some. You can buy politicians (really? I’m shocked), men that are recruited to work the ranch are frequently ex-cons, & if they work out OK, they may be branded with the YSR branding iron (Ouch), & those that don’t work out disappear... Lots of miscreants seem to disappear in the wide open spaces on the ranch, the Rez, etc. also.

My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys, Willie Nelson, 1979

I grew up a-dreamin' of bein' a cowboy
And lovin' the cowboy ways
Pursuin' the life of my hard-ridin' heroes
I burned up my childhood days

I learned all the rules of a modern-day drifter
Don't you hold on to nothin' too long
Take what you need from the ladies and then leave them
With the words of a sad country song

My heroes have always been cowboys
And they still are, it seems
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams

Cowboys are special with their own brand of misery
From being alone too long
You can die from the cold in the arms of a nightmare
Knowin' well that your best days are gone

Pickin' up hookers instead of my pen
I let the words of my youth fade away
Old worn-out saddles and old worn-out memories
But no one and no place to stay

(Truly, nature’s most majestic animals
BISON
Now called Walrus). - I think someone failed here ...

My heroes have always been cowboys
And they still are, it seems
Sadly, in search of, and one step in back of
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams
Sadly, in search of, and one step in back of
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams
