Defensive Pessimism

Sunday, January 05, 2020

A big thanks to Kelly McGonigal for her work on willpower- I watched her Google talk on the willpower instinct this morning while working out, and it was a great reminder to forgive myself for having failed yet again on my journey to a lower weight and better health. I was cleaning my bedroom and found a stack of journals and the theme in each was how I can't believe I'm at this high weight and I don't believe I can change. Well, it is time for me to change that mindset and identify when I am most likely to fail and why so I can make a plan for managing those issues, and to remember to forgive myself if I do have a setback.

So, my biggest challenges this week:

1. My daughter's 14th birthday is this week and we will have cake in the house. Good cake. Homemade marble cake made with whole wheat flour and dark chocolate, but high calorie cake nonetheless.

2. I'm going back to work after a lovely break, and classes start on the 15th, leaving me days that are less than busy which leads me to boredom snacking.

My plan:

1. Have a small slice of cake while it is in the house, but also have a cup of tea with it and don't eat a second piece. Or a third piece. If I do, forgive myself and move on. this cake is only made for birthdays and is not a regular occurrence.

2. For work, bring planned snacks that take time to eat like carrot sticks, which I love, and sliced apples. Bring almond milk for my tea, which makes it feel like a real treat, and savor some flavorful teas throughout the day instead of snacking. Avoid the break room which will be full of fantastic chocolates like truffles (my co-workers always unload their sweets in the breakroom after the holidays, and some get super good chocolate!).

3. Connect with my family about the willpower talk. 3 important points: sleep, meditation, and forgiveness. If they can help me in these areas I'll be stronger and more able to manage my challenges.
