It's Not Supposed to Be Easy!

Friday, November 01, 2019

This hit me today as I was driving and ruminating about some new elderly parent issues and some issues I discovered with a member of my child's special education team. It's the same with weightloss too of course. Life in general is not meant to be easy. We don't learn, strengthen, improve and become more resilient when everything goes our way.

If weightloss had always been easy I'd still be eating sugar and processed foods. The challenge is what forced me to adopt the healthiest lifestyle possible and even then it wasn't easy. If my life had always been easy, I would probably fall apart at the slightest setback. Heck, the things that left me in tears growing up are so minor. Even what knocked me down in young adulthood is barely a blip if I face it these days.

Somehow as these new hurdles rose up, it brought me some peace to just accept it all. I have faced many hurdles before that seemed insurmountable, yet somehow I managed. I should expect difficulties. There are some things I can't fix, so I focus on that which I can change.

You don't build endurance and muscle cruising down the road in the backseat of a limo. You build it walking the walk up and down hills, sometimes jogging, sometimes walking, maybe even dancing, but never giving up.

When life hands me these challenges I need to say..."Oh hello, what are you here to teach me? How will this make me a better person?" rather than "Oh h$ll no, go away!...This is so unfair! Waaah! Must go hide under covers!" OK to be honest these days I say the latter first, but eventually I get the better sounding one. To strength! To resilience!

You, my dear, have nailed the essence of life. Nah, can't say I always am in the camp of "oh joy! another challenge.", but it doesn't take long to get to the attitude of learning what I am supposed to learn and doing it.

    Fantastic blog! YOU are fantastic!

I can really relate to this. I used to be so upset about all the problems my middle child has had--social, emotional, and just everything--and wished they would all go away. I was jealous of the people I knew who seemed to have perfect children with perfect school attendance, children who didn't question what society expected of them. I remember feeling heartbreak when I would hear neighborhood girls on their way home from school talking and laughing and having a good time. It was "poor me, poor me," until I had the kind of epiphany you describe here. First, I found out later that the mothers of those girls had their own different problems, so we can never tell from the outside that others' lives are easier than ours, and second, I understood what you say here about never growing or becoming stronger if you're not faced with problems. It was SO painful (and often still is) having a child who struggled so, but I have to say that I learned so much from it, mostly how to love, and to be grateful for the tasks I've been assigned.

So glad you're feeling strong! Way to go!

I love your perspective on life and you are absolutely true. There have been many things in my life that I thought 'well, this is the absolute end, I will never be able to go on'. Yet I did because it was truly my only choice. To give up, to let the difficult situation win, just wasn't an option. I get that from my mother. She made me crazy most of the time but she had a will that just wouldn't quit!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. Some days I need the reminders! Have a wonderful weekend.

This author must be a personal friend. Many of her points related directly to some of your previous posts. "You have many strengths." That paragraph, IMHO, describes you.
I hope you find the positive take away from the article that I did.

BR>Happy Friday! Happy November! Have a great weekend. emoticon emoticon
