Sister's Surgery

Friday, October 11, 2019

I wrote a while ago that my sister found out she has breast cancer. My mom is 87 and this is really too much for her.

We have been waiting to find out when her surgery is and whether she would have chemo first or after. We found out yesterday afternoon that she is scheduled for a lumpectomy on Monday morning at 7:00 am. That means I will have to go to her apartment on Sunday so I can get her where she needs to be on time.

I know this is going to be very difficult. My mom has asked me whether I want her to go with us and I said no. I just can't take the drama between those two. My sister told me earlier in the week that the tests she had showed that it had not spread to her lymph nodes. So we were all really relieved, but when I talked to my mom last night she said that my sister told her it had metastasized, but my mom didn't know what that meant. I always thought that was a bad thing because it meant that it had spread. I didn't say anything to her because I didn't want to her fall apart, and maybe I am wrong, but I did check it out from a medical source.

I am trying to prepare myself for anything, but at the moment I am only planning to stay 2-3 days, since the surgery is out-patient. We'll just have to see.

Eating will be a huge challenge. My sister eats pretty much take-out every day and I am not that familiar with the area any more, so I'm not sure about grocery shopping and where I can get healthier food.

Fingers-crossed and prayers that everything goes OK!

Good luck to you and your sister! I hope they find good margins and that she will just need radiation. My mom had breast cancer surgery this april and we were fortunate that she is still with us.
    Hang in there!

When I was pregnant I had gestational diabetes. The nutritionist was SO much help! I was eating out a lot. I'd been eating cheesebrgr, fries & coke & she said skip the fries & drink diet coke. There were ways to tweak things that helped.
