Scary momets as we age

Sunday, October 06, 2019

We take for granted that our mate will be with us forever. But one never knows from one moment to the next what can happen.I talk to my girlfriend who is 86 and her husband 89. There is never a dull moment in that house. One minute they can be fine and the next she is rushing with him to the hospital for a problem he has. Scary moments as we age. Never knowing if we are going to be alone for the rest of our lives.

I often wonder how women or men survive after a mate is gone. What it is like to be alone in the house by yourself. My neighbor keeps her bathroom light on and she has a little dog to keep her company. Her nights are lonely. She is fortunate to have children who come to visit but they are not constantly there like a husband was.

We argue and fight for stupid reasons and go to bed angry never knowing if when we awake we will see each other anymore. Why do we do this? We have no answers. We need to curb these angry moments to the side.

Maybe it is time for us to change our ways. Try to respect each other more, less arguments or none at all if possible. Turn your eyes away when he or she does nothing to upset you. If a light is left on, or a cabinet door not closed, or stuff around the house, just take care of it yourself. Don't mentione it to him or her. They are not going to change and no sense your blood pressure going up over something not worth it.

Try to smile more often. Do something nice for each other. Bring the love back and throw out the angry moments.

Don't wait too long to change, time is getting short as each year passes. We will never know how long we have together. I even worry if I will make my 60th. With each day a new ailment seems to cause a call to the doctor, sometimes the ailment is cause for worry. I don't know if I can go it alone. I want to be the first to go but I am not in command.

My mom was devastated when my dad died but she rose above and became a remarkable independent woman. She learned to do the things he had done for 60 years and was proud of her accomplishments. She lived 6 years without him, continued to go out with friends to plays and various activities, participated in a full life.

Totally right. My parents have been married 64 years and Dad is currently experiencing some health issues. All of which upsets Mom terribly. She's afraid of losing him. But we're not in control. God is. He is good!!
