Today's Coach's Challenge: Do Something That Scares You

Ok, I didn't do it today, I did it yesterday. And yes, I didn't plan to do something that woudl scare me, but nonetheless, that's exactly what happenend. My husband has a small boat and loves to go out fishing. He usually goes out alone, which makes me nervous so I try to join him once in a while.(sorry, fishing is not my cup of tea)

Yesterday at 5 AM we headed out. It was a little foggy, but he assured me that he has a GPS wonder tool that leaves breadcrumbs so he can retrace his steps and it does all kind of other wonderful things so we will be safe. We head out and he explains to me about the shallow channels and using the red and green buoys for direction. Everything is going pretty well, and the fog is already lifting. We are headed to the small opening from the harbor to the big wide ocean. I think he calls it the rips.Well here's where I find myself in the movie, Adrift. Suddenly there are big waves and the boat is being tossed up and down, I'm holding on for dear life, and my glasses and sweatshirt are getting soaked by the splashes from the waves. I look at my husband and say, "I think we should turn around!" He calmly assures me that it will only take a few minutes to get through. He is right, before too long we are out on the sea and we can begin "trolling" for fish. I need to catch my breath, zip up my wet sweatshirt and try to calm down. I'm trying not to think about having to get back through the rips. Fortunately our trip back in was much less eventful. I survived.

I don't think I'll be in a big rush to go out with him again, but I will be even more worried than I used to be.

I understand the fear. Glad you trusted your DH and it turned out to be another experience for remembering always. emoticon

Sorry you had a scary spell in the trip... and to make matters worse.. got soaking wet to boot..

Next time.. have hubby check the weather & boating news... and choose a day when the rip area is calmer... and wear a rain slicker !!

When visiting my niece in S..Cal.. we took their boat out to Catalina Is. I would have been quite nervous.. if I had allowed myself to think about how far from land we were, should anything unwelcome have happened...
It was a great trip !! So glad I didn't let fear spoil my chance to make some great memories.

I am sure your husband checks the weather before he goes out to sea. The rips can be scary when you go from the calm waters of a harbor to the open sea, but it is perfectly normal. A channel is narrow, the open sea is wide, and the sudden unbalance causes these swirls. Don't be more worried than before - your hubby knows what he is doing!

I was scared just reading this. And, yeah, I'd be even more worried now every time he went out.

emoticon I got caught in the Atlantic once as a storm moved in, we hightailed it back with the storm chasing and overcoming us....scared to the core! I lived!

I'm already scared to death just by reading. You were brave! I'd never go or went with my DH when he used to go in a boat. I'm happy he quit that hobby.

I can just feel the terror. I am not big on water things either.

Oh Cathy, I would have been so scared too. You husband sounds just like mine when he had his boat. He had so much faith in the boat being able to ha dale the rough waters. Definitely not my cup of tea for sure. I like my feet firmly planted on the ground.
You didn’t tell us if you caught any fish though.
