From Running to Biking and Back Again

I love running. I love what it does for my weight; I love how it makes me feel; I love the increased endurance for everyday stress. But the roads have been icy or slushy here since late September, and with dark falling and temperatures dropping before my husband gets off work, running in the dark has become a more dangerous proposition than I’m prepared to deal with. The obvious solution would be to run indoors on a treadmill. And we have one, purchased when we moved from the local ReStore for $50. I got a good four months worth of use out of it before it started skipping. So, two months back, I googled how to fix the problem, and started fixing the most likely issues. As the fall wore on, I took my workouts indoors with Jillian Michaels bootcamps, HIIT, and cardio dance. But the treadmill has stayed resolutely broken. And the videos, while great for building muscle and toning, are not the stress-relieving cardio I want. So, last night, I admitted defeat for the season (unless a treadmill repair person can be found) and bought a exercise bike today. Frankly, it was less expensive than the next needed treadmill part. I put it together, and tried it out tonight. 22 kilometers, which is 13.67 miles of use in a half hour, and I finally feel like I got in a challenging workout for the first time in ages. I would love to run the Pisgah Mountain race this next Fall, and hopefully this will keep my endurance up for that challenge until I can start hitting the trails again.
