Outside My Comfort Zone

Thursday, June 07, 2018

If you read my previous blog, "The Prize", you know about the rec. center holding a contest for membership prizes. You also read about my discomfort about the water requirements for the month of June. You also know that I'm NOT a swimmer.

I didn't realize until this contest that I am after all a pretty competitive person. When I mentioned this to my husband, he without hesitation said "Yeah, I always knew you were competitive". I haven't asked him to elaborate, but I'm curious as to what his reasoning would be behind that statement. Hmmmmmm...................must ask him.

I donned a swimsuit (yikes!) went out to the pool, twice so far, and joined two different water aerobics classes this week. And I didn't drown. As I'm sure you can tell from my writing this blog.

While I didn't particularly enjoy the classes, I found that I can step outside my comfort zone and try something new. I also discovered that trying something new doesn't bother me the way it once did. I don't have the fear of being judged or not measuring up like I have in the past. I've come to realize that most people, especially at the gym/rec. center, really aren't concerned with anything more than doing their own thing and how THEY appear. This realization has been freeing for me. Yes, I admit there are those people who are judging others but that's their problem, not mine.

Drum roll please, for the month of May for most visits/classes attended, I won a months free membership. Yipee skippie hooray! My husband knows me better than I know myself, I am competitive after all! Lets see how I do the rest of the contest! Pool time and all! Bring it on! Oh yeah, there are a couple of people trying to get me to do the climbing wall, I'll let you know if I'm THAT brave!

How awesome is THAT?!?!? Good for you for taking that first step (the hardest!) out of your comfort zone. So often we stay stuck in our comfortable spots with excuses, while YOU gave it an honest shot. And it REALLY paid off - congratulations!!!

How inspiring! It's easy for us to say, "just TRY it!" However, overcoming that fear and self doubt isn't as easy as just "doing it." Your courage and overcoming these obstacles is wonderful evidence of your transformation...the inner journey is harder than the outer journey in my opinion.

Sounds like fun. To win is fun. I can't picture me doing a climbing wall but won't be surprised when you blog about it.
