Picky Picky Icky

Wednesday, December 27, 2017

So did you know most food aversions are textural? Oh, some are olfactory (spoiled food smells bad, as an evolutionary response to gnawing on last week's lion carcass in the savannas of Africa) but most are textural.

So, are you picky about what you eat? How many of these to you avoid if possible and do you know why? My number is six and its all textural (mushrooms, raisins, olives...). How about you?

Oh, and forgive the spelling - I stole it (as I steal many things) from one of those goes-round-and-round-on Facebook threads. So go ahead - how many of these do you avoid when possible, for reasons other than dieting or medical necessity?

Just so you know, off the list or not, my aversions are mushrooms, raisins, olives, eggplant, sardines, anchovies (score one for aroma there), beets and Brussels sprouts.

Nutella, beets, sweet pickles, dark chocolate, green and red peppers, metallic tasting processed foods, No way Jose, Or is that not politically correct saying any longer. Hard to keep up. Love most fruits and veggies except the ones I mentioned.

Mustard. Celery, olives, coconut. Milk. No fish, fowl, or meat but even before my vegetarian days: no raw fish, canned tuna, oysters, snails, chicken, ham, turkey ... right, that's most meat. I would never eat raw fish or birds. Never liked most meat unless it was cooked well done and preferably grilled and smothered with onions.

There are quite a few on your list, and a number NOT on the list. And I can't stand the actual taste of blue cheese or liver - yuck!!!!! Plus there are countries around the world where fermented noodles or fermented rice are common - I can't even stand being in the caf├ęs that serve that, the smell is overwhelming!

And then there are the texture things............

Vinegar and pickles - can't eat anything sour without getting a little gaggy.

Tofu - just don't see any point to it when other things taste SO much better for the nutritional value.

As for the rest, there are plenty I avoid because they're carby and hence have little nutritional value, but none that I didn't enjoy eating at some point. And I never met a seafood that I didn't love!

7 on that list for me. Mine is definitely textural. Marshmallows....ick!! And slimy things like mayo, okra, oysters. Too chewy like snails...like chewing rubber bands but love the garlic butter they are swimming in. I'll eat everything on your list except for sardines.

I struggled! What do I "usually avoid"? Or actively dislike? I usually avoid vinegar, but I don't mind it, really, it just doesn't send me. I avoid cooked fish, but if I'm at a dinner and the options are "beef or fish," then I'm eating fish, and usually wondering why I don't eat it more. And the real question is, who doesn't like bacon?? How is that even on this list!?

I don't like squishy. Mashed potatoes, gravy, scrambled eggs, even ice cream. I could eat a bucketful and never be satisfied.
