Number 10 of 10 Things to Hate About Sleep Loss:
“Studies show that over time, people who are getting six hours of sleep, instead of seven or eight, begin to feel that they’ve adapted to that sleep deprivation -- they’ve gotten used to it,” Gehrman says. “But if you look at how they actually do on tests of mental alertness and performance, they continue to go downhill. So there’s a point in sleep deprivation when we lose touch with how impaired we are.”

The first and last sentences of the quote really got to me! (Actually, I have to say the entire quote is a wake up moment for me.) I had not thought of getting less than seven hours a night as sleep deprivation. I can totally identify with convincing myself (deceiving myself?) that over time I have adapted to getting by on less. Of course I understand there are health benefits of getting more and better sleep, but I have no idea how to even start!

Check out the entire article if you have a chance; some of the other effects may surprise you also.

Great article on Sleep loss. I enjoy reading many articles from WebMD.....Thanks for sharing. I do not get enough sleep many nights or wake up and cannot fall back to sleep. The best nights of sleeping have been if I have been outdoors walking and getting lots of fresh air. Thanks for sharing.

"...So there’s a point in sleep deprivation when we lose touch with how impaired we are.”

    So TRUE!!!

Thank you for your blog and bringing attention to the importance of sleep. I actually consider adequate sleep and adequate hydration (drink water folks) the secret weight loss and weight maintenance weapons. They are far more powerful than folks realize. Sleep deprivation wreaks havoc on our bodies. Not good. Not good. Not good.
