Girl, I see you.

Thursday, August 03, 2017

I had just started out on a popular nature trail for my run when I saw her... I was coming down a steep hill and there she was at the bottom, sweaty, with her phone in the air trying to get a selfie of the hard work she put in. And then it happened... she noticed me coming in her direction, seemingly embarrassed she dropped her arm, started walking away while putting her phone back in its carrier. I immediately felt bad, that she didn't feel confident enough to finish her photo. So if you're "that girl", here is my message to you: Girl, take the selfie. You are out here to better your health, it's hot but you're out here anyway putting the work in. Just because I'm not in the same phase of my journey as you are, doesn't mean I haven't been there. It doesn't mean your work is less impressive. Just because I have some gear you might not have, doesn't mean I wasn't once where you are... after all, I have been at this for almost 8 years now. There will be people who poke fun, just turn the music up and keep going... there's more than double the amount of people who will be encouraging towards you, I promise. Girl, I see you... and I'm not rolling my eyes or shaking my head. Do you think because we are in different stages of our journey that you aren't good enough to take that selfie? That you somehow didn't "earn" it? Selfies are all over social media, but yours... yours is the one I WANT to see. The girl not afraid of how she looks after a hard workout, the girl working on her health, the girl who is confident in her ability. You may have felt embarrassed that I saw you, you may have felt like a fool for trying to take a photo of yourself... but I hope not. Don't stop what you're doing, and someday, hopefully soon, you'll see what I see. A girl not afraid to give up, a girl not embarrassed to go out and get it done, a girl brave enough to finish that selfie because she knows she earned the right to show she worked hard. A girl no longer the girl that I too once was. "It's supposed to be hard, if it wasn't hard everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great" Much love, Em
