Free Guided Walking Tours of Historical Old Escondido, Ca. & Possible other meet-ups and walks arou

Wednesday, June 07, 2017

I just found out today that they are still having Free Guided Walking Tours of Historical Old Escondido, California. They are still having them every 2nd Saturday at 10 AM each month.

So this Saturday, June 10th will be the next one. I know it is short notice, but I will be attending this one. And maybe others during the upcoming months, especially if anyone else is interested in joining me on the tours. They have a few different tours that they alternate with throughout Escondido. They are a docent-led walking tour that takes you on a journey through Old Historic Escondido. The walking tours can last anywhere from 60 minutes to 90 minutes. So remember to wear your walking shoes. The Tours begin promptly at 10 am, so try to arrive at least 15 minutes early. You will need to sign a list of walkers on the tour, which is also a waver form I believe. All tours start on the SE corner of Broadway and Grand Ave (In front of the Draper's & Damon's store).

June 10th tour will be "The Downtown Escondido" tour. Which will take you along Grand Ave, where you will see commercial buildings dating back to Escondido's earliest days. You will learn about the people and businesses that helped the growth of Escondido. (I did this tour before about two years ago, it was really interesting. I also did a few of their other tours. The tours move along at a good pace, not too slow or too fast. No one had any troubles keeping up on any of the tours I went on no matter their age. The tours were fun and interesting.)

The Tours are Co-sponsored by the Escondido History Center and Old Escondido.

They also have a Free Mobile App for self-guided tours available on all Apple & Android devices. Just visit the App Store, and search for "Explore Escondido" to download it. Or for more information on the walks you can call the Escondido History Center at 760-743-8207.

I don't have a smart phone to down load this app on, so I won't be doing that. I will just go on the guided tours at 10 am on the 2nd Saturday of the month. I will give more notice in upcoming months if I am planning on going to them or not. I will probably make all the months this year though. So if anyone would like to join me let me know, or just show up at the corner of Broadway & Grand Ave in front of Draper's & Damon's around 9:45 AM.

Looking forward to possibly meeting some of my Spark People Team mates. I am also talking with some other Spark People team members about possibly having other meet-ups around San Diego and North County areas. Like maybe a meet up and walk around Mission Bay’s side walk area at a later date if anyone is interested in something like that. So if you might be interested let me know. Janette

Thanks, Saturday I did my third walking tour of Escondido. There was 4 ladies counting the guide for this walking tour. I think when I did it the two times in 2015 that there was probably about a dozen or so of us. They were all a lot of fun. If I don't have to work Saturday, July 8th, I will do the next one, it is going to be on some old homes to the west of where I live.

I posted about the walks in here, and also in my profile in My Fitness Pal, and also in Facebook on a group page I belong to for ladies in Escondido that are 50 +. One of the ladies that showed up Saturday saw my posting on Facebook and decided to join me at the last minute. We had never met before or even chatted on Facebook before. She is kind of new to the group, and I haven't been able to attend any of their events for a long time since I have been working and busy. I didn't even see her response to my post because she responded after I had already left for the walk. The other lady has been in Escondido for about 12 yrs. I think she might have actually been on at least one of the walks I did in 2015? At least she looked familiar, and looked like someone in some of the photographs I had just looked at recently from then. She said she lives several blocks to my south and walks all over Escondido all the time. So I will have to keep my eyes out for her when I am out and about. And check those old photos again. The lady from FB is going to try to met up with me again and some ladies from the Escondido group for some events that some of the ladies from that group have already scheduled. They have a breakfast gathering this Thursday close to my house that I will go to if I don't have to work then. It will be at a French Bakery Restaurant on Grand Ave. It was on the Walking Tour Saturday. I had actually been to that restaurant once before with the ladies from Facebook, probably a couple of years ago.

I only took a couple of pictures before the walk of a few of the commercial buildings since I knew that was what the tour was going to be on this time. But didn't take any pictures on the actual tour. As we were such a small group we were doing a lot of personal chatting and discussing the commercial buildings and the history of our City. The guide had several really neat old pictures of what the commercial buildings on that street looked like at the start of our City in the late 1800's. They were really neat, and I hadn't seen them before. I thought they looked so much better than any pictures I could take now, especially with my cheap old flip phone. I am going to look online and try to find some of them to post for you all. I did take a picture of what use to be the first bank, but it has really changed and is no longer a bank. I also took a picture of the AT&T building. I remember hearing something about it in one of my previous tours. I need to do some research on it, I think it was an old Pacbell building, and not sure what they said before that. There is a boarded up furniture store that use to where a hospital was. We have several buildings that are empty downtown right now, and a Church and some schools are taking over some of them, but some of them we don't have any idea what is going to happen to them yet. Even Draper's and Damon's fashion store that we meet in front of has just closed down. It is sad to see so many stores closed. A lot of them moved to our local malls, but some just went out of business.

I think next months tour will gather more people from Escondido because it is going to be about our old historic homes that are still here and are in pretty much their same state as original. Where as the commercial buildings have changed a lot over time, and had lots of different types of businesses taking them over and making changes.

It would be heavenly to live in a place with year round summer, safe walking weather, lucky you to also enjoy such a historical town. My city is so new, the oldest buildings really aren't all that much to see, just some turn of the century, but not that many.
    Look forward to your photos!

CGEM61, I sometimes have Thursday off too, but not always. But I don't usually know for sure until Wednesday afternoon if I have to work that Thursday or Friday. But yes, we can try to schedule something in July for a Thursday. Maybe walking down at Mission Bay side walk area or something like that?
