800 calorie blood sugar diet - Week 6 weigh in

Can I be clear here, I am not recommending this diet I am just trying it and reporting on how I get on. I have seen my doctor and will be seeing him again in 6 weeks (now tomorrow). I will monitor myself regularly. If you want to follow such a strict diet you should talk to your doctor. Also my husband is going to keep a close eye on me for any signs of hypo. If you want to know more detail please read my blog '800 calorie blood sugar diet - Day 1' where I go into a bit of detail about it. The diet plan is for 8 weeks.

Start blood glucose - 190 (10.5) Start weight - 12 st 6.5 lbs or 79.2 kg Insulin 37 units


Today is the end of week 6 of the diet.

Today I weigh 11 st 11 lbs - 75.2 kg - a loss of 2 lbs this week with a total loss of 8.5 lbs.

I originally set myself a goal of 3kg loss in 8 weeks. I met that goal in week 5 and set it to lose a further 1kg by the end of 8 weeks (again) and have already reached that by week 6. I am not setting any further loss goals as I have family arriving for a 3 week stay and have so many planned outings I am going to find it difficult to keep to the calories, but I have every intention on keeping to the principal of low carb eating.

I am not going to publish my daily blood glucose readings as I had my HBA1c, Cholesterol and Triglycerides done at the laboratory yesterday. My results were:-

HBA1c 6.6 (down from 8.1)
Cholesterol 3.7 (down from 4.1)
Triglycerides 1.21 and 1.38 (down from 1.50 and 1.71)

Insulin reduced from 37 units to 26. Glicazide reduced from 30mg to 20mg.

It is interesting that my cholesterol and triglycerides have come down as I am now eating more 'fat'. However, this is not like the low carb high fat diets of the past where you can have fried foods, fatty meats and cut out all simple carbs without replacing them with complex carbs. This diet allows complex carbs and good fats like olive oil, avocados and nuts, vegetables, pulses, beans etc. It is basically the Mediterannean diet but low calorie.

I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow afternoon and will be getting my blood pressure done by him. I have a machine at home which has been showing reading between 116/70 and 105/65 with a constant resting pulse rate of 60 'ish but I am not fully trusting the machine as that seems a bit low.

I have just been googling my medications to find out what I am on and why. If you are diabetic you will know what it is like to be on so many drugs that you forget what is for what. I am on 2 blood pressure tablets (Atenonol and Zesteril). And I must apologise to someone who commented on an earlier blog that BP medication can protect your kidneys. It turns out the Zestril can be prescribed for this.

I am not confident my doctor will appreciate the fact I am on only 800 calories but will go armed with a list of what I eat in a day so he can see I have lots of good, nutritious foods, plenty of good oils, a variety of complex carbs and a delicious and varied diet.

I just hope that the evidence speaks for itself and he can see that this diet is working for me.

Wish me luck for tomorrow and the next 3 weeks of chaos in my house.

    ELLMAL, thank you for your concern. Far from starving I am eating much more than I did before but the right things. For your info my meals today consist of:
    Breakfast, melon shake(quarter melon, 50gms blueberries, handful of spinach, 200mls almond milk and tablespoon of chai seeds) - 130 Calories
    Lunch, 3oz roast chicken, 1 roasted red pepper, 6 roasted asparagus spears, handful of green salad leaves, 6 cherry tomatoes with a dressing of greek yogurt, garlic and lemon juice. - 270 calories
    Dinner, vegetarian curry with cauliflower rice (onion, zucchini, red pepper, butternut squash, mushrooms, canned tomatoes, spices and quarter of a cauliflower minced to resemble rice grains) - 300 Calories
    Evening snack, tuna and cream cheese dip on a rye cracker - 100 Calories
    Total 800
    Does that sound like starvation. If I have half the evening snack I can also have a piece of dark chocolate as a treat.

    Good luck with the Family chaos. But this is the best kind so enjoy t to the fullest. Relax and have fun. Feed your soul like a glutenous pig on all the love and companionship there is. Don't worry there are no calories in love and you can always give more away.

    My 2 cents is that you will be starving yourself and your body will rebel! Most Drs say "do NOT go under 1200 cals. Best of luck
