The "What's Up" for my SparkFriends

Thursday, June 18, 2015

The "what's been happening" since April. Trying to keep it short.

April: My daughter's 17th bday. She went to a trampoline park to celebrate with 3 friends only to come back with an ankle sprain (2 of 3 outside ligaments torn), which translated to current physical therapy and trips to the sports med doctors. It also led to interesting prom footwear. See below.

During this month, my sandaled self also zigged when someone else zagged and I caught my toe on the back of his shoe, leading to a big "OUCH" with no second thought until the toe wouldn't move. A trip to two doctors, with two x-rays and a highly stylish orthotic boot was my fashion footwear until mid-May.

Watched the movie on Netflix called "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead." While I'm not sure I'll ever be a 'juicer,' I will say that what struck me is seeing that a man had a heart attack and it cost him $56,000 all said and done. Made me wonder how far away I am from one considering I'm so overweight.

May: Mother's Day, a fantastic breakfast made my my husband. Lots and lots of baseball games for my 9-who-turned-10 year old. My brother's family stayed with us during Memorial Day weekend, where we visited the Air Force Museum (amazing, and free!), and also went to a Cincinnati Reds game.

May: The realization of "HOLY SH... I'M HUGE." Our family got on the gigantic scoreboard. There's nothing quite like being ~70 lbs overweight in a red t-shirt on a screen larger than life to realize "even sucking in my stomach isn't making a difference to my profile." Wow. Started the 30-day squat challenge and finished in June.

June: Started the 30-day push-up challenge with family (today I do 29). Watched a 20-min TED talk about how most of our illnesses in the US are avoidable due to them being caused by the foods we eat. HOLY COW. Also had a weekend in Indianapolis for baseball at a beautiful park complex. Me no longer in my boot. And just this past Monday starting a two-week jumpstart diet from Dr. Oz that my mom recommended. She's lost 20 pounds since starting it (been a few months of following this guideline but not strictly on that particular diet), and said this helped her kick sugar and get on the right track.

On June 1 I kicked most of the sugar out of my life. For two full days I was outright grumpy (withdrawal?). But I focused on getting in a lot of veggies and fruit. So now a bit more "restricted" but still focusing big on lots and lots of low-glycemic veggies. I wanted to binge the other day but decided not to. Not sure when the next "want to binge" will come along, but I give those binges the right to leave me alone for the rest of my life. Tonight we head out to dinner at a favorite Thai restaurant for my husband's 45th bday, which is part realization that I'll be 45 in January, and don't want to be super unhealthy.

I hope all of you are doing well. I have lots of reading to do to catch up with all of you!

Have an active summer!

Matching booties? Hopefully the binges can be veggie binges?

Oh wow, lots happening in your life and glad you are eating well and wanting to be healthy. My husband is super ill with cancer, and we are still trying to wrap our minds around it. His brothers, far away want him to go to Mayo clinic, and we have good doctors here and I looked into it but getting the standard treatments. It doesn't look hopeful for him, and he just wants to stay home with me and be comfortable as long as possible. I hope they back off and let him be as we deal with symptom relief and learning our new normal that we don't want but it is what it is. Only God knows our lifespan.

He did not have symptoms of anything so it is advanced and he didn't even know he was sick. Now he can't eat solid foods so I am not cooking as much and I've lost weight. Caring for him and making time for me is challenging yet important for my health as well.
