What to Eat?

Wednesday, May 20, 2015

I don't know about any of you, but I am lost in confusion about all the ways the "experts" say you're supposed to eat. For instance, eat lots of protein, don't eat carbs, eat carbs, don't eat sugar, just watch your fat, only count calories, eat as much as you want of meat, but no carbs, etc. There are a million diets or ways of life to eat like the Paleo, Mediterranean, Atkins, Belly Fat diets, etc. There's tons of books on detoxing, flushing the fat, etc. Also, a lot of "diets" are mostly vegetarian, which is great if you're a vegetarian. But, I still like a little meat.

It was so simple as a kid... you run into the house, grab a half a peanut butter & jelly sandwich and an apple and then you were off again to go outside and play. I was thin up until I had my two children, so I was actually in my late 20's/early 30's when I gained my weight. And not to forget all the bad habits coming from working many hours and eating all the food coworkers would bring in, the office birthdays, special meetings, etc. Also, too tired to go home and cook made it too easy to hit up a drive thru. Oh, and one insanely tough biology class...eating to stay awake to study EVERYTHING!

Now, 100 lbs. heavier, I find that I am having to relearn good habits and make a stronger effort to make positive changes in my life. I am working on clean eating and meal prepping and new recipes. I have had soooooo many failures and excuses, but now I am starting to have some breakthroughs and some small successes. The best thing that has helped me is never giving up and sheer determination. Also, the thought of each day being a new day to start over. Although, after too many days of starting over or starting fresh, I got tired of it. That has pushed me to have more success days in a row. I think I am on the verge of finally "getting it" and finding out what works for me. For instance, eating small meals all day or just three meals and two snacks, etc. I am building routine and structure, but have some flexibility to achieve my goals. I will write about some of the things I have changed in future blogs in case anyone is curious.
