Learning to be flexible

Wednesday, December 10, 2014

I had every intention of going to the gym this evening, but my workout buddies told me this morning that they weren't going. I'm not doing any strength training right this moment (I know, I need to focus on ST more), but I was going to hit the treadmill at the gym to work towards my goal of being able to do a 5K by my birthday in February. Well, Bear and Maggie came up to me SUPER excited JUST before it was time to change for the gym. I can't say I blame him - it's been a while since I got a good wog in with him, and even LONGER since Maggie came along. And I haven't attempted jogging on the treadmill yet - I have this fear that I'm going to trip and hurt myself or the treadmill, so I'm a work in progress.

So I caved! I hooked their leashes on them, and off we went. I'm surprised how quickly Maggie figured out the running bit - of course, I talk to them quite a bit while we're walking (I think people think I'm a little nuts!), so I warn them when we're getting ready to change over from walking to jogging. The 3rd time, Maggie bolted at the word "Go!" LOL She was definitely in her element. Bear has some difficulties, but he's like his momma - the colder days give us ENERGY!

Had the hungries again today (I'm beginning to think it's the cold weather), but did fine calorie-wise. I'm making progress, and that works for me :) Hope everyone had a great day!!!

Cold weather has resparked the idea to leash train the two indoor cats. Big smile! I'm glad you are getting the dogs involved. When I run, the dogs are always barking until I go home and soak em in warm/hot water. But those are a different kind than yours.

I feel you with the treadmill, I feel so uncoordinated and like I'm going to trip and fall. I am getting a little better, but I do prefer the elliptical!

That's great your pups will run with you! I tried to get Olivia's to jog a bit and even run a little with me a few times, but she's not really into it. So I just end up marching in place while I wait for her to sniff around and do her business LOL. I have noticed that she's been pretty good about walking at a faster pace though, so I guess that's something!

And yeah, I'm always talking to the pup while walking. People without dogs probably think we're nuts, but they really do understand and respond!

Keep up the great work. Don't feel too bad about not making it to the gym, at least you're still out there doing something! Remember, even a short work-out is better than no work-out!

Awesome that you did some interval jogging with the dogs!!! I think it's great that you warn them because that's how they learn what's about to happen to go with the flow faster! I talk to mine all the time too HAHA, wish they could understand more! LOL Like "you don't have to bark like a crazy just because Papa gets home" LOL
As for strength training I think having a few bodyweight things to pull out on days you aren't going to the gym might help that way you can feel good knowing you got a bit in to keep you going, like 3 good overall things like pushups, squats, 4 direction planks. The simpler you keep them the more likely you are to just whip them out just like going for the wog was for you! It keeps it easy to just do for default.

That is FANTASTIC! ST is such an asset, but you don't need to feel bad if you don't do it! You should google bodyweight ST exercises that you can print out. I bet Spark even has a quickie routine. Then you can do them in your living room after your wog and kill two birds with one stone!!! Either way, fitness choices like that are important, and you are making them. Good for you.
