Ran My First 5K!

Sunday, December 07, 2014

A very good much younger friend of mine posted on FB back in August that St. Augustine was having a 5K race in December. It is called the Run Like A Diva Half Marathon and 5K race. She wanted to know who would sign up with her. Well, several of our mutual friends were all excited and said they would do it and we could all walk/jog together.

I thought that was pretty good and it would motivate me to start walking and jogging to get ready for the race. As time went by, I noticed that nobody had registered accept me and my friend. I didn't think that was working too well but I had already paid so I decided that the two of us can surely walk/jog for three miles. I was already walking at a pretty good pace with her for three miles. I wanted to try and run some too, so I did that for a few days and it like to killed me!!! I just wasn't consistent with it.... emoticon

Well, today was race day and I got up and picked her up at 5:30am! The race started at 7:00am for the half marathon runners and our 5K started at 7:30am... Well, we started out pretty well; I was jogging and motivated by the other runners. We walked/jogged two miles in 28 minutes and I was really happy about that! But, that last mile was still ahead of me and my thighs were aching and I had shin splints developing and my feet felt like lead..... emoticon Everyone around kept urging me on and we could see the finish line; so I plodded along and was disappointed with myself because I was running out of steam so I quit jogging and just walked as fast as I could. I pushed and pushed and finally crossed the finish line in 49 minutes and 52 seconds! Not bad for a first-time 5K racer and at age 67 no less!

I had a lot of fun and we got a tiara and a pink boa and a very pretty medal for completing the race and we also got a rose and a glass of champagne at the finish line! I probably won't be able to walk tomorrow but I am thinking of getting into better shape so I can do this again next year and beat my record!
